Hate to to be down, but afer 18 years with the same company i am now redundant..good news is the chinese or some other country will get to make what we used to,and the australian public will get to pay the same price....
At least i did get a bag of cash,so that helped ease the pain.
Qantas is also getting rid of a thousand or so and there must be a bunch more companys as well.
Makes you wonder where this will all end up????

the company im working for is in administration if that counts.just waiting on someone to buy the place and take over atm.

My Misses just got told that her contract is being terminated in two weeks and she will be rehired as a casual at a new company owned by the same guy as the place she is at now is tanking. Similar position to your Misses - she has spent the last 5 years working for crap wages "While the company gets on it's feet" and now it is circling the drain.
That's what happens when a tiny company refuses to take small jobs, just chases the big clients and is poorly managed I guess.
vlad01 ·
Thats sad to hear guys 👎 Hope it all goes well in the near future, hang in there.
Makes me fell really lucky that the company of 3 people I work for gave me a chance and now we are having the busiest year ever. And I love my job 🙂
Man! I must be lucky❓

Doing business in Australia is getting harder by the day. But do you think Julia and her chronies care? They just want to squander more of our money and introduce new taxes to help drive more business offshore. Go figure!
vlad01 ·
Some real f**ked up people seem to get into our government.
Its no wonder our Australian people are such a miserable bunch, what are we suppose to be happy with this system looking after us?
vwjon ·
doing ANYTHING in Aus is VERY difficult, i was a successful buisness man in the UK, my own towing company, rolls royce hire, vw parts buisness. i figured i was at the top of my tree, i needed a challenge (lower taxes and sun also tempted me).
has anyone seen the hoops and costs involved with starting a towing company here? 2 different licences, extra drivers licences, police clearance, ABN, insurances, council approval etc etc, its very expensive and almost impossible to do the paperwork. so im not bothering, then people wonder why Oz is struggling? all i can say is you brought it on yourselves. making life easier for 1 makes life easier for all. cut the red tape, cut the crap, and lets start using common sense. you know it MAKES sense!!

I could go on for ever about whats going on this country but i wont.
My father had to escape his communist country, when he was 16 years old.
He now says the commo's have followed him here!

i got retrenched after 27 years and 6 months later they had people doing the same job as i was doing
I must have been costing them too much in super

Unfortunately we have one of the best systems that make this place what it is? go figure
this country has been going great guns while the rest of the world is up the shite financially
many here have jobs compared to the rest of the world and although money is tight it still goes around
it doesn't really matter who is in government as like they care care about you n your fam, all they need is ur vote every four or so years n then they do what the big end of town requires
time is short here so make the best of what you have and it can't be that bad as we all enjoy the humble VW
I know I do
I too am currently without a 'proper' job what ever that means.. but I'm also looking..
quit the 'WHINGING' ffs 😬

Yeah, the local farmers in this area would be screwed if there werent backpackers doing all the picking. Are aussies going to get out of bed at 5 in the morning during winter and pick vege's out of the ground for 15 bucks an hour? I dont think so, unless they get to drive the tractor!!! And the gatton locals wonder why it looks like little asia down the main street

Been on a road trip since Saturday morning, have spoken to heaps of people about lots of things but the comon thing is that there is work out there if you want it, spoke to a fella in Broken Hill who came out of retirement because they begged him to come and help fill vacant spots that they could't fill, he'll be earning around $150k driving trains, sure you can't just step into that sort of job without training but they can't get anyone to train! go figure. Fella in Burke reckons that if you apply for the dole there they just tell you to take one of the heaps of jobs available. Not suggesting things aren't tough but if you are willing to travell, change, try I think you will find you camn get ahead.

id say your pretty lucky to live in a country where after working for 20 years and the company goes bad you get a massive payout for pretty much nothing. wouldnt get that in 95% of the countries on earth. australia is turning into a country of whingers for no other reason than the right wing media.

mmmm.................. I see both sides
My son didnt finish a uni course and is now having a HEAP of trouble trying to get into a decent job.
He is picky - reckon I could get him an apprenticeship.
He is chasing more the IT or something else.
That said - I put him in contact with a colleague and he is cutting duct out a lousy wages. But he gets up each day and goes to work.
Hopefully he will work long enough to get youth start and go back to Uni
On the otherside I have been advertising for Project Managers.
Most of the relpies are from over seas.
Cant believe how many people watch the internt and try and get out of Poland or Afghanastan or...............
Not many Sydney siders have applied. Those that have do not have the skills I am after

A few interesting and different perspectives here. A few of my thoughts are:
* We do a have a two speed economy. Some sectors (predominantly mining) are going gang busters, whilst others are really struggling, and are putting people off. I know the company I work for has.
* If you lose your job it is hard and unpleasant. Of course it is hard to take when you’ve worked your tail off and then feel that you’ve been discarded. We shouldn’t lose sight of the very real problems that do happen when people lose their job, and we want our governments to create an environment where jobs are created, not lost.
* Despite this, relatively speaking we are still the envy of the world. We still have high employment, we still have conditions and opportunities that 99% of the rest of the world can only dream about.
* Yes there are jobs out there, often if you are prepared to move or travel, but often it’s not that easy, and family considerations come into play, or frankly you just don’t want to have a ‘fly in, fly out’ existence. You have to remember that the mining companies don’t hand out big pay packets because they are generous. They hand them out because the work is hard and unpleasant, and it’s the only way they can convince a lot of people to do it.
* Yes, our government is not perfect, no system put in place by human beings will ever be perfect. Yes, we should always seek to improve our government and how our country is run. But we are still very much the lucky country. The things that our government pays for, and the free market with boundaries has served as well as a nation, and it will do so for the foreseeable future. If we are complacent, then yes it can all go wrong, but no we shouldn’t be whingeing constantly.
* Perhaps instead of ‘Love it or leave’ stickers on the back of cars (which I dislike), we should have ‘Stop whingeing or leave’ stickers. 😉

I am extremely lucky as I had no job experience prior to my lucky break. But someone (my boss) said hey you want to try this kind of work?

I own my own business. Two employees, me and my wife. My wife does the bookeeping and I do the hands on and travel southern NSW and northern Victoria. I work in the insurance game.
I have a few gripes and I think they are fair ones.
1/ Some prick many years ago came up with outsoucing. Paying sub contractors like me a higher hourly rate to do the same job. Sounds great- not so. I've got a broken leg- did it 3 weeks ago and 4 more weeks before I can walk (limp). My wife has to drive me around whereever I work. In fact I was working two days after I broke it!! I did it in the driveway so no workers comp, no sick leave.....no income if I dont sit in the car!!
Travel is partially paid. When I get home I'm on the computer for between 1-3 hours. not paid. when I do things like renewing licenses for business reasons- not paid. and on and on it goes.
2/ When travel allowance is paid it is paid on a rate of VIC RACV medium petrol car rate say $0.80 cents a km. it is actually 85 cents but lately the middle man, the large companies that provide me work want more profit...so they cut our travel rate. You complain they pick some other guy to do the work. So best thing to do is buy a new diesel car as I did 3 years ago a Hyundai i30. great car. at 5.5 ltrs/100kms. its the cream of my business. but is it? After 3 years its done 200,000kms and is to any potential buyer- worthless. being a diesel it has many a km left in it though and was a good move.
3/ If my workload falls I'm in trouble. In 2004 I returned to a previous workplace at Puckapunyal to work security. I pushed myself to do static guard work at 6 degrees below zero or 50 degrees off the bitumen in summer. No union would get my membership when they allow that to happen. The Army wouldnt allow shelter as they had their budjets. the company contracted didnt want to sped money on buildings it didnt own. I lasted 8 months and got work again for my business. My gripe here is (and apologies to any farmers it isnt personal) in the shepparton area a few years ago they had a late frost. Bracks (premier) attended throwing interest free laons at the orchardists. Recently those receipients "got it" when they announced maybe it wasnt a good idea growing vulnerable crops in such an areas. I am a businessman- I do get these offers to help me out when times are tough. Its too selective.
4/ I was unemployed for 3 years once. 1992-1995. Retrenched by telecom. I was there only 3 years. I lived then at Yea Vic...too far to travel to the city and no real large city nearby for work (except Puckapunyal in 1995 where I got work) While I was on the dole I had 2 small kids and my wife to fooed and a old run down house and mortgage...and an old Zephyr car.
But I improvised. Used my skills to build cubby houses for xmas deliveries.
Sold them for $600 each with $450 profit each. about 12-16 every xmas and say 4 during the year. I mowed lawns.
I utilised my old ride on mower to build a train
I even tried clowning YOBBO
materials cost me $800 mainly pine lining boards and wheels and paint. I earned $400 a day when it was in shows in country towns. Of course I lost the dole as I struggled to make my businesses profitable but it worked.
There were times when I nearly chucked life in. Like when mowing lawns and I had a roughly made sign on the rear of my trailer "lawns mowed ph" and a copper booked me for not having the trailer registered as you should when running a business. It was 3 weeks before xmas and that fine meant a lot of work to make up for it.
I feel sorry for those that have lost their job. I sound engative but that was then. I realise now that it was having the right "never say die" attitude that got me through. and thats my only advice. When you get rejected- double your effort and never never never ....give up!
vlad01 ·
That last statement is a powerful one and it applies to everything.
Its what I have to do to keep me strong for what I am about to do. I may explain latter, it depends if it turns out good or I take another blow.
L469 ·

urh?..... ok then?

Once a Vietnaese boat refugee visited the factory I was working asking for work. Every Thursday on the knocker 10am. After 4 months still out of work he was rejected again. On the way out he asked my boss if he could wash his car. He gave the refugee $10 to do it. An hour went by and the boss went to look and saw the fellow had washed every car in the car park about 14 of them....even a visiting salesman's car was shiny. He was immediately employed and got my position when I left.
Sometimes you have to make your own opportunities.
I am going on a bit but as a final example I mentioned I mowed lawns in Yea. Prior to embarking on that business I surveyed half of the towns residents...to see if they would contract me to cut their grass. I returned home to my then wife to tell her that not one resident wanted my services. Her reply "well that's the end of that idea". "Not so" was my asnwer "I'm going to start the business up anyway. Such was my positivity. I dropped flyer in every letterbox. Within 4 weeks I had 12 clients mostly shop owners, real estate agents with rental properties and the like.
Being positive is an art. It requires a different mindset. It means a mindset so strong you wont ALLOW negative thoughts/attitudes/events to enter.
Consolidate yourself (pull back, regroup) and good luck.

My wife has owned her own business for about 5 years and 9 out of 10 weeks she's lucky to bring home $100. I told her to never buy it but she really wanted to. She's put so much money into it and never sees a return.
My crappy wage of $18 an hour (gross) has to try and pay for rent ($375 a week), fuel ($100 a week), bills, food, clothing, school needs for our 2 daughters, and baby needs for our 8 week old boy. We've been struggling for years but i'll take any job that will help make life a bit more comfortable for my family.
My wife had planned on taking 3 months off maternity leave but had to go back to work 2 weeks later becuase the business wasn losing money and her workers were calling in sick. She whinges that we have no money, so i tell her to sell her business and get a regular job so she actually gets paid to work.
Sometimes you have to cut your losses and move on.

Great post Tweety, both stories are perfect examples of getting off your ass and doing what it takes to get the job done, be that getting a job somewhere that you can see youself working or generating a clientelle/business in a field that your capable of, whatever it is, it will generally lead to where you want it to take you.
Since my trade apprenticeship that I started after graduating high school, I have been self employed, thats now 30 years, and it's alot of hard work. But it's been my choice. It occasionally provides flexibility when you need it, but really just means you have many different bosses, your customers. Treat them how you want to be treated and usually things go well.

I mowed so many laws at only $5 an hour. It was a constant source of income, as lawns always grow.

You got it Greg "The harder you work the luckier you get" is how a lot of people look at you when you work for yourself, not allowing for the toll on the body and when you do finish they reckon you made a fortune. Unfortuntely a lot of the time we just can't do some of the things we should have done whilst we were able bodied due to work injuries..
