Just asking the questions if anyone has had any experience with the following VW parts supplies?

Bernie Bergman engines/parts

FAT Performance engines/parts

DRD Racing Heads engines/parts

Rancho transaxles

Sort of just sifting through a whole heap of new info!

It feels like starting all over again coming from a life of watercoolers!

Thanks for this.

It make a huge difference when you don't know who does what or can build something good.

If its watercooled, no worries at all.

Any other recommendations for engine packages, suppliers etc etc?

Just sort of going on a guide really.

Shooting for a strong ultra reliable daily driver setup. 120-140hp? or this out of the question? I do 600-1000km a week for the work/weekend travel.

Or is 100-120hp more reasonable?

It may seem crazy to some but....

Eventually, the ideal plan is also to retrofit K-jet (CIS)

To free up the intake, make it fuel injected, smoother & more fuel efficient.

This was my original idea to a stock 1600 twin port to see how it responds. (before & after dyno readings etc.)

But also eventually just looking torwards more power.

I'd raid all the K-jet gear & MSD ignition off my turbo'd mk1, once that setup is removed for a big engine upgrade. Which will be happening not too far off.

But as all things go, I'd say that I'd end up fitting a turbo if I have a spare T3 50/60trim, .48 A/R laying around.

I already have the fueling & ignition which supports approx 240-260hp.

With it setup as NA, the K-jet gear will still easily support 170-180hp.

Just ideas at the moment.

Rod imports a lot of stuff. Be worth talking to him first. You may well get a whole engine for a killer deal.

cnfabo ·

thats a lot of km's per week out of a performance vw engine...if its going to be a daily and no weekend drag strip fun then id go for a mild set up......no point having a high strung 120hp+ engine just to drive to work....thats my 2 cents.....stan does a nice base 1916cc that will serve for a daily and go for years and years....

hellbugged ·

this is the very ultimate of everything.......and good value too!.....complety what you need with gearbox and engine in one go

good news is i have bought parts from Victor and they arrived safe and sound!

Be prepared to spend at much as your engine on getting your trans to hold together once you drop the turbo on and brakes to stop the thing.
Jump onto shop talk forums and read, read, read. I found the forced induction section there really helpful when selecting the bits for my motor.

Yeah 120plus is probally a bit much for most as a daily. I've just put my 2332 back in, other than being "very loud" inside, and very short geared it's perfect for a crazy person like myself. It made 140@w with an fk87 and was fun I've changed the cam and it probally has less peak power but it is so smooth and has heaps of bottom end and doesn't seem to come onto the "cam".it's a big outlay for something like you mentioned plus the Dave buttler gearbox will be expensive so make you decision carefully.don't get caught up in the how cool does my parts list sound!

matberry ·

Where are you? SA?
Pref get an engine builder close to you.

As for your list of suppliers

BB...dont
Fat..... excellent
DRD.....mmm not for me
Rancho......don't go there either

Good suppliers for engine parts that I use
Scat, CB, JPM, even these suppliers, every part needs careful consideration and thourough checking. My 2c

EDIT: oops, forgot Berg, as naturally everybody knows them to be up there with the best as far as quality and fit is concerned.

120 fwhp is easy to get achieve, and no probs being a streetable engine that can be extremely reliable if built right and kept in tune, even on carbs.

Forget the K-Jet IMO. Had a modified set-up on a turbo Golf in the 90's 12 sec car once I went Haltech, piece of crap comparibly on K-Jet.

motha ·

Thanks for all the replys & advice!

Right now the deal fell through on the car I was looking at

(don't ask & I'm not all that happy about it. First to inquire about the car, was told I had first option on the car, was putting down a deposit the same night when I got home from work, was going to make the 1500km round trip to go there on Sat/tomorrow with cash & then it was sold underneath me the same night I was putting a deposit on it!!!)

Also had another one lined up, but the price isn't realistic enough for what it is & a bit run down.

Anyway.

don't knock the K-jet. If its setup right, its just as good as EFI.

Its also the most responsive Fuel injection ever made too believe it or not.

My mk1 is a virtually stock engine 1.8L with a mild as cam, stock pistons, rods, small valves with knackered guides, bores (you can push the piston to the side & clearly see the piston rings!!!) T3/4 turbo & with full K-jet, 3 additional cold start injectors power by a boost pressure switch (so without any additional computer controlled injection), it ran 12.99@106.7mph in full street trim/weight, tyres etc & was still 2 tenths off its best 60ft. Indicating a 12.5-12.6@106-108mph.

& its gets consistent 38mph for the daily drive.

I've been playing with K-jet for over 15 years now & the only failure that has ever left me stranded, has been "one" fuel pump due to someone running the tank dry on me previously.

So I wouldn't disregard it.

Spoke to a few people already about engines before this thread but......

had a good chat with Rod Penrose today about some engine packages. Best bloke to speak too! Also the only bloke who seemed to give me the time of day & was great at talking me through the kits & what goes into them.

Just have to keep my eye open for the right car to come along now.

Sounds like your golf is the one you should be concentrating on you are aware that air cooled performance engines are not the best value for mony around.a 12 sec golf That gets 38 mpg put some guides in the head a little bit of tlc that's a hellfast streeter that you all ready have my car I'm always working on it so if I was paying some one to build my motors and work on it it wouldn't be happening, you have to be very passionate and hands on or have a lot of cash, these bastard arnt cheap!carn go the golf!!!!!!!!

SuperOwen ·

Only 38mph every day for your daily commute?? No wonder your considering changing to aircooled power 😀

hahaha!

Yeah 38mpg with 220+hp is pretty crap I reckon. After all, the golf is shaped like a biscuit tin!!!!!!!!

But better than my 530hp VZ ute too!!!! 430km out of $80!!!!

Golf is all sorted.

Just waiting on some more engine parts to arrive before the "serious" power upgrade.

220+hp & a 12.99 just isn't enough anymore.

Looking at a baseline of 420hp on 19-21psi. Upto 550 on C16 if I decide to run it on C16.

If I decide to upgrade the turbo sometime next year, it should make near on 500hp on 24psi on PULP!

All this will be put through a fully manualized Mk1 auto with a 4500 convertor.

Should be interesting. Especially as it will still be 100% street driven & running 165/75R13 tyres to keep it all "stock" looking.

No fancy gauges, steering wheel, wheels, shifter, ride height etc. All 100% stock.

But do have some stock 13" rims widened to 6" & M&H street/drag DOT tyres fitted for the strip.

Not too many good reports about bergmann, a few forums have said his engines detonate, stick with aussie builders and support the local industry, at least you have a local point of contact if questions arise.
