The motor still runs sorta fine, just rough on startup with a bit of coolant smell out the exhaust. Then when it gets hotter, it runs better still, then starts overheating after 20 mins.
If I am to do the head gaskets, I would be wise to linish the surface of the heads also.
What success rate has anyone else seen from this procedure? I suppose just pop the heads off and check them with the side of a stainless steel ruler.

The heads will be fine done many

Too much boost Pete? hehe 😁

Trust it to go from bad to worse. I started it up today, and it ran rough for a minute, then started coughing and revving it was making it stall. I would say the plugs and maybe the oxygen sensor are fouled now.
Do they have to fully dissassemble the heads to face them?
vlad01 ·
yeah coolant destroys o2 sensors almost instantly.
What is the recommendation for top end VRS gasket set in Melbourne? We have an account with Bursons at work, so I will give them a call in the morning
I dunno if I should change the head bolts too?
If it was a turbo I would for sure. The workshop manual does not say you have to. Pretty cool tightening sequence.
rocknrob ·
yeah the tightening is a little weird...don't lose track!😏

I got the heads. Bargain. They really are fully factory reco. 100% cleaned, machined, valves done. Look like new, oiled and plastic sealed with labels.
ElusiveStranger ·
You done it yet Peter?
If not, as Rob says - don't lose track when doing the bolts. Hang up the phone before proceeding.

I can honestly say I've never encountered a more spastic head tensioning sequence than Subaru EJs have 🤪

I haven't got a gasket kit yet. I have spoken to Clive cams, and they can regrind the cams to increase midrange torque. With stock ECU.

On Ebay there are head gasket and bolt kits from the US.

i've been looking at them too, bloody cheap, but are they...cheap
