Thought I would post up the start of the build....
what a mess it was when it arrived......
lots of work to be done in the treasure area and new ribs to be welded in, I'm toying with the idea of having the rear half of the tray fixed but then then front half towards the cab on gas lift struts and flush mount locks so you can open up to get inside the treasure chest from above., maybe skin where the treasure chest door is located, any thoughts?
matberry ·
Jeez Ian, a bit of work ahead. How's the rest, cab floor, doors, screen, roof etc.?
The top hatch idea could work IMO, if a proper seal, gutter and drain arrangement is made. Water in there is just another rust trap. Maybe graft in a T3 hatch. I'd definately keep the side door though, even put one in the RH side too. 🙂
binner ·
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^yeah but a challenge is good right?... 😁
I'm kinda diggin the gas strut thang at the moment, spent a lot of time sitting in the chair looking at the ute today and I think it is worth a try. You are right about the weatherproofing, siill trying to work that out.
Rust is ok, major areas are where I already cut out the ribs n such, floor pan will be all new. The main frame and rest is all good shape.Doors and panels are smooth and ready for paint. All parts are arriving soon, so my 2 months off work will be doing guess what? 😵💫
Plenty of documentation pics also for future sale, really want a dual cab. 👍
>EDIT< Mr Berry, do you know the best place to find a windscreen and anyone that has put a sliding rear window in a cab before?.. I would love to have a slider window but just depends on coin. Do need a windscreen though..
zap zap
blink ·
Loooking good
binner ·
ohh it keeps going......
cut up the floor pan and found a key wired to the chassis up and under the pan, ohh and some rust 😂
h ·
👍 cool! keep up the good work 🙂
BrisDubba ·
Looks like a good project, I have a spare 79 dualcab if you are interested.
Peter
binner ·
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ arghhh don't tell me that !!! .. that's wha tI have been looking for but grabbed this as a substitute. Send some pics and more info to ihatestarbuckscofe@hotmail.com
cheers Ian
BrisDubba ·
Ian,
Photos sent to your email as requested.
Cheers

after a long crap day at work I come home to 4 boxes of joy!!
whooo hoooo..... it's like xmas and made me get my ass into gear and get going on this project....
enjoy
matberry ·
Good stuff Ian, got some more goodies for you too. We'll dropoff friday 👍
binner ·
^^^^ohhh really!!. I'll give you a call today if I get a chance.
You da man!!
binner ·
Ohhh my ...ohh my ... just got home and opened up the Vintage speed gear. I think I may of trickled, this stuff is even better in real life!!!! The exhaust system is pure fuggin art and the gear shifter is off tap!!....
Thanks Matt for the drop off and thanks for swingin me towards vintage speed... I'm sure the $$$$$$ are worth it.
40 IDF's are enroute as well
grinderman ·
I'm doing up my dual cab bay over christmas and a full length lift up aluminium floor is part of the plans. It will give me access to a custom 120lt fuel tank and the top of the engine which could be handy. Do what you feel like doing even if its not liked by purists
binner ·

gave the strut lift the flick..... but something I have always wanted ... I got a power window set up for the rear window
shazammm
matberry ·
Glad you like the Vintage Speed gear Ian. Definately nice stuff.
Power rear screen....cool
binner ·
matberry wrote:Glad you like the Vintage Speed gear Ian. Definately nice stuff.
Power rear screen....cool
not the whole rear window, both sides are fixed glass and the centre (500mm wide) is a power window.... but come to think of it .. I like that idea, a full rear window power winder...
really wanted to do the strut but this is a daily driver and proll will sell to find a dual cab as a real keeper.
Col was trying to sell my missus a water pumper while he was here today!!! pfffffft water 😂
matberry ·
Ha ha. He'll try and sell ice to the Eskimo's.
Window sounds cool. Dual cab and single cab are the same.
binner ·
^^^not when you got kids......
matberry ·
😁 I meant the size of the rear window.
binner ·
bahhh hahhhh....still got the wit after 15 years..... 😀
shit bloke I can't stop looking at the shifter.....
binner ·
worked on the power winder a bit today ...... I think it's going to work and now thanks to Mr Berry I am going to try to lift the whole window and not just a section.
The winder came out of a falcon and was way too long so had to cut and shorten and reweld the pulley, changed the length of the cables to suit, reshape the guide flat because falcon windows are curved.
mikew ·
Interested in the window rubber? Will you get one made? Simply cutting a slot to allow the window to go through won't work I would of thought judging by with wiggling required to fit the rubber over the glass in a normal install..
Love the idea!
Mike
binner ·
^^^^^^^ yup , will make my own felt/rubber waterproof seals and rehash the entire widow sill to suit.... it all takes time and beer and sitting thinking .....
binner ·
only an hr or so today, most of the day was spendt collecting parts/things/steel blarghh blarghhhh...
reinforced the lower section with some 50X50x3 angle and more vertical reinforcing to be added, welding in anchor points for child seats also for future buyers.
The cardboard mockup is for my cab extension or if you want to call it my tray reduction. Added an extra 200mm which will be a lockable space for tool box n shite.
Tomorrow will be an all out welding day so hope to have some good progress shots tomorrow nite.
Today is my first day of holidays, so it's all out for four weeks....
stay tuned!!!!! 😂
matberry ·
Good stuff Ian, holidays workin on the bus 👍👍👍
binner ·
how crazy are CV joints to take apart?... I got new boots but shit scared about losing ball bearing everywhere. I guess I just gotta bite the bullet and go in deep.....🤪
binner ·
did a lil more today.........
put some sound deadener on roof, doors and front. Welded in new treasure chest ribs.Welded in drivers side floor section.
And had to see what the green dash will look like.....😂
The cut out in the door is for my SPAL power window winder kit and central locking. I was going to put door poppers in but thats just too much electronica 😂
binner ·
ahhhhh holidays.....
cut more out yesterday, and welded in more new steel. Painted it all in gal prime then hit it with tar mix paint.
Punched in new brake lines, had a bitch of a time getting off the drums, and don't mention the fuggin axle nuts...... the bastards were seized up so there was a lil bit of screaming and yelling at inanimate objects around the garage for a bit. I should of put it on video and uploaded to metoobe 😂
The brakes were houses to wasp nests and spider webs and looked like they had never been removed in its life....
So it's off to blow more cash today on cylinders and pads. Do people still machine drums or is that too old skool these days?
binner ·
just a few others, and that spray adhesive is the shit!!... EAL 790, 22 quid a can but it sticks like shit to a blanket and the best thing is it is aussie made 😁
donn ·
ha ha, 22 QUID, I've got 20 years on you and I stopped saying that years ago, I'll have to start again, it sounds more Ausie. 👍 looking good by the way and yes machining drums is still good.
binner ·
finished the cab floor today and underneath, going to go with 3mm sheet steel for the tray as in picture and played around with the instrument panel for gauges.....
more work tomorrow 🙂
binner ·
mr fabricator today, and finally tore down the CV joints and marked as good as I could. Are they difficult to put back together? ..do I need peace and tranquility when doing it
Just wish he told me about the rust when i asked before buying , this is the first n last time I will by sight unseen. If he told me the truth then I wouldnt be so pissed but meh, at least after I'm done I know it will last 🙂
hope to have the batt tray and opposite in tomorrow and then it is on to last part of sanding and priming for top coat.
binner ·
repacked CV's,new boots and a tinge of green....
welded in the battery tray and opposite
had a lunch curry
remade the rubber lip sills for engine lid and treasure chest
took a leak had a coffee
made some phone calls
installed CV's
installed GR 2 shocks on the rear ass
drank beer......
took off workboots
matberry ·
Good stuff Ian, mmmm green. Is that left over from the wagon? 😂
binner ·
^^^^^^ you guessed it, such a good shade of green I had to use it somewhere.
vwsteve ·
you are definitely a man on a mission, good work mate😎
binner ·
been doing a lot of panel work lately and now finally getting closer to putting on the color.
Got all the panels to my liking and hit some this arvo with a final putty/primer coat, tomorrow is 400 dry sanding and then its on to the color
StenGuns ·
Nice
binner ·
^^^^^ cheers bloke, put some more primer on today but still not happy with one panel so spent way too long trying to get it spot on I didn't get a chance to put color on today.
tomorrow is a goer though, so I hope to have some pics up by tomorrow nite with color.
got my webers and balanced fan delivered today too!!!!
vassy66T1 ·
Good on you Ian
Great progress on your short break from the work day drag 🙂
binner ·
finally got color on today, only had one hiccup with paint, got one run right in the bloody front nose!!! couldn't believe it but ohhh well.....
and my new favourite tool is those hole drills, those things rock!! I usually use a die grinder but not anymore.
Drilled out all my holes for 25 mm grommets to allow all the power from doors to cab and later tonite the dash n all bits are going in
binner ·
more pics
matberry ·
Wow Ian, your fly'n, what, just one run ? 😂
Those drills sure do the job for large holes in panel steel. 👍
I have to ask tho, new paint, but is the welding of the tray and rear window finished?? You going to glue them on?😂
binner ·
hey bloke, I'm rethinking the sheet steel now hence not putting it on. I'm now leaning towards treated marine ply with rubber matting over it and some nice rows of aluminium runners that meet up to a gullwing toolbox. Cheaper and faster to just weld in a tradie box where I was going to extend the cab and make it look as if it is part of the cab. Just sux ass if whoever buys the ute as they can't take off the gullwing....
And now I'm trying to hunt down a complete Triton GLX-R rear power window unit, I am hoping a wrecker will have one and I want to actually cut out the complete window and some of the frame and graft it into the bus so it's just one complete package... one of a kind 😁
anyone know of a new wrecked triton waiting to be hacked up?
Just finished running all the new wiring for power windows/central locking/ sub and amp/set of tweeters and 6 inch speakers....
and BTW,, just kampers and The bus stop are fuggin awesome!!! the despatch is super fast and had no dramas at all with order. Just kampers are doing free freight so I rang them for some help and just to make sure that it was free freight but the dude wasn't available so I left my number and FMD he actually rang me back to help out, you don't get that kinda service much these days...............
matberry ·
Cool mate. People always seem to be happy with Just Kampers, price and service, I'd avoid the other shop tho. 😉
TheMiniMan ·
hey Ian, lookin good mate, & nice to have some personalized custom designs goin into it bro
are you riding still/much???

TheMiniMan wrote:hey Ian, lookin good mate, & nice to have some personalized custom designs goin into it bro

Matt
Hey bloke, cheers for that. Yeah the rear window is going to be sweet as long as it all works out.
I haven't ridden DH for a while now man.. the scene is pretty fucked now and I can't justify paying close to 100 bucks a race + travel. It's a fuggin joke!!.....
Turner and DHD parted ways so that dried up and now I mainly commute to work on my tricked out Jamis Parker or do a lil bit of XC riding. I still have a Turner DHR though and still think they are one of the best race bikes out there.
Did Whistler twice in the last 3 years and going back again next July for a month to ride with some of the boys. We normally hook up with Kram when we go over there which is pretty sweet.
How bout yourself, I bet you are doing more surfing and relaxing than riding these days too!!!!! 😂
Hey, you wouldn't have a moustache bar in all your parts laying around would you?. I need one to finish off my engine build and get that damn upright engine bolted up. I posted up here and thought someone would have one laying around but no luck just yet.........
cheers Ian
binner ·
had one of those "feeling like I'm getting nowhere" days today
Redid my dash cluster panel because when I went to put it in this morning it looked like SHIT so I redid it and this one looks way cleaner and fits all the gauges well.
Put in most of the carpet and threw in the gear shift, you can't really tell but I sanded back the handbrake and hit it will a bajillion coats of clean, yes I said a bajillion and it looks sweeeeeet with the gearshifter.
beers tonite and no work on it, need some time out 😂
TheMiniMan ·
Nah, i havn`t ridden for a couple of years, i got my hillclimb car running & went racing again
sold my Da-bomb a few weeks ago (sad day) but it was just sitting there doin nothin
I had a heart attack 4 weeks ago, died a couple of times just to see what was on the other side
it`s over rated really, breathing is far far better, so i came back :-)
now i`m doing diddly squat waiting for the damn heart to heal so i can go racing again :-)
in this thing-->
& my tow car--> Quad-cam 32v injected alloy V8 power :-)
& sorry, i have sold all my old Vee-dub sh!t/bits (except the duel-cab Zombi of course)
cheers man & good to see you are still doin it, say hi to Mark & all the boys for me whenever you see them next K???
binner ·
^^^^^^^ is that a screwdriver near the steering wheel?
Heart attack,,,,FARK man!!!!... glad you are still around, yeah I'm sure the other side is real shit!. I hope I don't visit it anytime soon 😁
check ya laters
TheMiniMan ·
hee hee,,, yeah it`s my sequential gear-shifter,,, no expense spared hey>??? :-)
& """the other side""" is quite peacefull really, very pleasant & relaxing, no more chest pain you see :-)
after i died in the Byron hospital i saw the white light with a pinky swirl above me & started heading that way
actually hovered above & watched while they were pounding my chest doin the CPR thing,
broke all my ribs & seperated heaps of the cartilage, & dislocated all the rib joints, pretty painful & still is.
i watched the docs from above Zap me with the jumper leads a few times before i figured enough was enough & came back
I died again in the ambo on the way to the next hospital (John Flynn at the Gold Coast)
& then was on the way out again as they put the first stent into my heart
My Left main Artery was 100% blocked & the right main is still 90% blocked & lookin like another stent going into that one soon
Apparently this left blockage at %100 is commonly called "The Widow Maker" because very few have actually survived it 100% blocked,
& extreamly rare to be resussed after cardiac arrest
& they say that any surfers copping this out in the water don`t make it back to the beach, i`m a lucky little prick :-)
Now i`m the talk of 4 cardiology depts :-)
My recent research suggests staying away from eating animal products
the last nurse that took my last set of blood tests said that i have "Pushed the Devil off the shovel 3 times"
apparantly means i`ll be living a happy healthy long life from hear on in :-) i can only hope so, i have more buggy racing to do :-)
cheers mate & get that kombi ute running so we can go play Kombi ute racing :-)
like this--->
had a mate come round today and help with the hoodlining, came up a damn treat...really happy with it. Almost finished with interior, windscreen in tomorrow then off to trimmers for new seat upholstery and taking those awesome jellybean rims for a polish and new 205 rubber to be slapped on.
binner ·
shit day today........
took my seats to upholsterer... baaaaa bown $800 later , I couldn't part with that kinda coin
fitted my windscreen ... baaaaa bown cracked it $170 later
started to drink beer
matberry ·
And things were going sooooo well.
vassy66T1 ·
Try Carmans auto trimming in Slacks Creek.
Tell him I sent ya (and that my last name is Vass): he is a mate of my big brothers.
How did the 2/3 seat clean up??
binner ·
thanks Marcus, seat was in pretty bad shape when I stripped it, about 6 springs were shot.. as in rusted away, the top main horizontal bar was rusted and gone... thats when the upholsterer laughed and said $600 for the 2/3rd seat. It was at that point I walked away. The drivers I picked up isn't that bad but it was going to be $800 all up..........
Marcus, I'm not having a whinge about the seat it just killed me when I heard the cost, I knew it was not in best shape but maybe I'll take a class in industrial sewing. I mean shit, at work I got an industrial sewing machine and I supervise fashion techs,I may just hit them up to do it...😁
ahhh the joys......
matberry ·
Ian, Marcus' dude did his whole camper for less, if I remember correctly.....
binner ·
yeah , I'm going to give him a call tomorrow and see what we can sort out ......
today I polished up all the rims and got new rubber on, went with narrow and I'm happy with the look.
Hows that steering wheel eh, bet you want one don't you.... it's going to have to stay till I get more cash to splash, more important things to buy first.
vassy66T1 ·
Ian, I heard some guy had that seat outside for a couple of months ... 😊
binner ·
^^^^^^^ a couple of months!!!! looks like years!!! yeah, a great place to leave a seat ... outside on the grass letting ants build nests in it, letting it rust away, letting a wasp nest in there...... 😁 ...it's all good bloke, nothing throws me anymore, not even smashing a brand new laminated front windscreen. I just go silent for 5 mins walk to my bar fridge and drink heavily. Then I move on 👍
went and saw David the trimmer today, much better answer and more positive... $550 total but proll not before xmas... damn
its raining......
EDITAMONDO- where is the best place to pick up a linkage kit for my webers?......and no, I don't have the coin to buy gene berg linkage kit. I'm thinkin more like CB performance or bugpac...
>looks at the guy in the akubra hat
vassy66T1 ·
Glad to hear of a better result with Dave.
Only months from me ... maybe years before I got it 🙂
^^^ thanks for the link mate but I need the seats restuffed and resprung too, not just covers.
ummmmm tidied up all the wiring in the engine bay and starting to put on the chrome, indicators, rear lights.....
rip it yup and let it roll.........
anyone got a gennie/alt stand, decent gennie/altenator or passenger side door"DUO" latch, they don't want or want to sell.....
binner ·
ohh yeah, layed the marine carpet down and got the edging on, looks a treat. Got some nice marine grade eyelets to tap into the long edges to use as tie down points.........
vassy66T1 ·
Why do I suddenly feel like going water-skiing???
Neat job
binner ·
wait till I get the wading pool and sunlounge on the back, sipping white russians while tanning it up.... 😁
TheMiniMan ·
Hey Ian,,, mate,,, bro,,, fellow Yup-ster,,, how`s about you come around to my place & do the same thing to the back of my ute yeah???
Please?
i`ll supply the drinkies :-)
Nice looking, great job man
binner ·
^^^^^ if you want mate, its hard to lay the stuff when you use contact glue, 2 people is the best to not get bubbles.
I drilled and tapped this arvo and the tie downs look shit hot!!
can you pick the odd one out in the pic? 😂
ohh and I would buy shares in cyberbond..... excellent product, been using it for years, loctite aint got shit on this stuff 🙅
binner ·
had a good day today, got my seats.... got the headlights all sorted out. I love steel wool!!
went low end with a empi hex bar linkage kit (I can see Matt rolling his eyes now) and had to ditch the power winder window (wreckers want around $700 for a complete cut) so its just not going to happen, I'm seriously running out of cash, still need a few things done, blasting and p/coating bumpers, small parts, insurance, rego arghhhhhhhhh
where is santa when you need him
matberry ·
binner wrote:went low end with a empi hex bar linkage kit (I can see Matt rolling his eyes now)
😂😂😂
we's gots to do what we's gots to do.....
really flying along mate, good on ya!!!!
vassy66T1 ·
Cool Seats 👍
binner ·
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ yeah the day after I spoke to david these seats came up so i felt bad but rang David and was happy thet he didn't buy the fabric for my seats... he was all cool about it so I'm just waiting on the vinyl for the door cards from him.
binner ·
waiting on heads to arrive, it's now been 8 weeks to the day waiting for my heads to arrive. Not really happy with their turn around times.
Started the build on the donk, can't really go any further without heads so I'm sitting here waiting.... the ute is pretty much finished, just got the windscreen going on on Monday and i'll smash in the rear window Monday, treasure chest door goes on tomorrow, door cards go on Monday, dash is finally finished and all installed.
Mr Berry, do you think the gear stick is about 80mm too short?... I feel like I'm reaching down to shift.....
binner ·
Since it's been close to 12 years of not working around a bus I need some help with a few things....
> what does the vacuum hose connect to from the brake booster, do I need a valve connected to the hose?
> I got a 40 IDF weber setup so is it best to run a 009 dizzy with vacuum or not?
> What the hell is this set up? (see attachment)... and what does it do?..... the hoses were attached to the valve covers. Should I keep this setup or just plug the holes in the valve covers.
thanks in advance ..... Binner
whathaveidone ·
Its a breather. 2 hoses go to your valve cocers and the other one goes to your oil filler neck!!!! or maybe into another hole in your valve cover, so any oil blown up there can drain back into the motor.
Bizarre ·
The brake booster normally connect to the manifold on a type 4 motor - but you are running a type1?? So - dont know
Is it dual or single Weber??
Cheap answer is yes - a 009
Reckon that is part of a breather set up for crank case pressure
matberry ·
Booster needs a check valve and is run to the inlet manifold. With your duals, I normally plumb to ALL manifold runners.
The breather should be used seeing you have it and are building a performance engine ie. better than stock, as said, 1 hose to oil filler/breather, the other 2 to valve covers, the most important rule during instal is not to have ANY dips in the pipes for oil to gather, all hoses must have fall back to engine.
009 will be fine with your dual carbs, good heads and exhaust.
binner ·
^^^^ thanks for the fast response guys, appreciate it a lot. So am I now going to drill and tap into either manifold for the brake vacuum?... does it matter where the location is on the manifold? does it matter where the check valve is located?.. should it be up nearer the booster unit and not near the engine?
Matthew, can you explain more about "plumbing to all manifold runners" please?
thanks again in advance .....😵💫
edit.... just fitted up the webers with a CB performance update kit and jet doctors....
matberry ·
Ian, all runners means each cylinders manifold, so you need min. two but pref 4, manifold runners drilled and tapped, using a tee piece or 3, you can plumb from the check valve to all 4 inlet manifolds. No real special location, normally towards the top, just make sure all the pipe work fits where you plan to drill for the fittings. Preferebly the check valve goes near the engine, on the tranny side of the tinware.
oldturtle22 ·
nice
binner ·
drilled and tapped manifolds today, did the usual lil stress about drilling into my manifolds and having it all go pear shaped. Turned out pretty damn good I think.........
getting closer every day
matberry ·
Too easy mate.👍👍
Hope you have some velocity stacks to clamp those flimsy air filter bases down properly.
binner ·
^^^^^yeah Mr Berry , I got stacks.. just a mock up there. I was getting a little excited and started to assemble then realised I still got to match port the heads when they arrive... 🤓
tinted the windows and put in the quarter windows today. Next is trying to sort out the hinge holes in the treasure chest, just noticed the fool before just sheared off the screws in the thread..... FAAAARK!!!!
anybody ever used those tap out tools or screw out tools ,,, whatever they are called......
vwsteve ·
excuse my dumbness but ive been running my booster without a checkvalve, do i really need 1?
binner ·
^^^^ errrr yeah ... massive blowback!!!!!
matberry ·
Yes, a valve is necessary, it's to always pull vac only so essentially a better vacuum is produced and also to protect the booster diaphram incase of engine backfire.
binner ·
ahhh putting in windows that are tinted...isn't that just a ball of fun!!!! f$#k me, what a shitfight.
vwsteve ·
anyone know where i can get a check valve from?,cheers
steve
matberry ·
Mick will have them as do I, I can send you one if you wish, $21+gst and postage.
binner ·
Didn't like the idea of crappy T pieces for the booster plumbing so I did a bit of drilling and tapping today and ended up with this.....
Bling a bling
matberry ·
Woo hoo, now you got the idea Ian. 🙂👍
binner ·
Thought you would like that...........
another windscreen goes in tomorrow, this one won't get smashed (i hope)
rear window and door windows go in on sat dee (wasn't working for me the other night)
door cards and speakers go in on sat dee
brake bleeding and adjusting on sun dee
still waiting on my heads....... humfffff
binner ·
ok ,so now I'm calling out......
can anyone help with a rear window, a gennie and a treasure chest lock for my build.....
cheers Binner
vwsteve ·
Thanks matt for the offer, i will check micks as its easier and local
does anyone have a pic of the treasure chest lock or what its supposed to look like as i may have something like it?
binner ·
looks like this .......
binner ·
did the cards last nite..... clean and neat and I'm actually surprised the power winders work...
vwsteve ·
nah i dont have 1 of those locks mate, cant you fix that 1?
binner ·
^^^^^^^^ nahh Steve, It is fooked!. seized up and been mangled inside lock.
Think I found one though, still no heads. I'm almost ready to think they are "lost" in transport. Not happy but what can you do. 🤪
binner ·
hope you all had a good xmas day.... I did. 🙂
finally my heads have been located after leaving Chicago on the 10th Dec, they are now in Australia and in transit to me. How does it take 16 days to get to Syd ?... I know it's xmas and such but 16 days..... pffft .
anyone want to buy it once its on the road? 🙂
binner ·
wow , I woke up this morning and my ute got replaced with this
matberry ·
Oh My God.....you poor bugger🙁
TheMiniMan ·
damn good shuttle pig :-)
chuck a rack for the DH bikes on the back & let 6 smelly sweaty grotty filthy DH riders cram into the thing
fark yeah, lets go :-)
binner ·
so my heads finally arrived by pac mule this arvo....
ripped open the box and started on things, first of all those Cro Mo pushrods are beautiful. Secondly .... those valves look BIG (yippie)
So I started on polishing them up and got to a finish I think is good enough for me, tonite will be match porting and fitting nipping them up ......
enjoy the pics....
these are the before shots........
binner ·
.........and here is after the magic
matberry ·
They don't look like Los Panchito's ???
binner ·
^^nope ...failed on those... went with mufu. I ordered so long ago (about 12 weeks) I forgot what I decided on, it was either CB or mofoco and I can't even remember why I chose Mofoco.
Muffler doesn't fit with moustache bar, modifying of the bar today.
binner ·
so after a day at my workshop (AKA work) I cut up the stash bar and did some modifying to suit.....
enjoy
ps ... If you have a good eye can you spot the art work in the background of the first picture ... it will startle some of you ...... 😂
binner ·
and here is finished....
Pumba ·
So now your engine is going to sit higher,or you extended the mounts to the body so the cradle sits lower ???
binner ·
^^^ roger that , got 2 packers to take up the gap.
matberry ·
You mean you had to mod the bar to have the exhaust?
binner ·
yes, Mr Berry I did. The pipes were dead inline/same height with the horizontals of the stach bar. I had to drop the bar down about 45mm to allow the pipes to attach to the muffler. And now I will either fab up some longer mounts or ad packers/ spacer (40mm SHS) to take up the gap.
Pumba ·
If you add spacers,do you think it will give you a lot of excess movement???
matberry ·
👎 bummer, I thought the Vintage Speed stuff all fitted!
binner ·
here is what I call spacers.....
Matt, you can see in the long shot where I had the issue with heights....
Pumba ·
Matt i think the vintage speed mufflers like ians only fit up to 71 models.
Ian it would have been less trouble for you if we just swapped mufflers😂
matberry ·
Looks like you got it sorted Ian, well done.
binner ·
^^^^ cheers bloke... still need to pick your brain though.
I went to bolt up the webers with those manifolds and F$%k me if the are too short!!! I'm about 40mm to low. If I try to mount the hex bar it fuggin hits the gennie!!....
Guess I'm milling up some spacers for the manifolds, glad I got a milling machine at work ;-) or if you got any easier/better ideas? 😁
binner ·
Pumba wrote:Matt i think the vintage speed mufflers like ians only fit up to 71 models.

ahh but if we swapped I wouldn't of had soo much fun today 😂

I went to bolt up the webers with those manifolds and F$%k me if the are too short!!! I'm about 40mm to low. If I try to mount the hex bar it fuggin hits the gennie!!....
Guess I'm milling up some spacers for the manifolds, glad I got a milling machine at work ;-) or if you got any easier/better ideas? 😁
What carb kit did you buy?
Maybe take a pic of manifolds, linkages and filters.

Mr Berry, here are some pics, the high side of the man is about 155mm and lowside is about 130mm....
I tried to show the difference in height on the linkage but its not too good, I'm about 40mm short...
am I missing something here?
matberry ·
Turn your linkage mounting plates up the right way and all will be good 🙂
The l on the r and visa versa too 🙂

^^^^^^^.....arghhhh hahhhhhhhh I'm laughing out aloud. What a douch !!!! I swear after tomorrow no more sailor jerry and engine work.
Hope we all learnt a valuable lesson here. 😂
cheers mate.

Too much fabbing and Tasmanian giggle juice🙅
Absolute bummer about the Vintage Speed. It was the one for the early bays Matt??
The part of the rear engine mount/bar that has the bends in it going to either side, is that part of the original bar that you bought?
If it is, it is certainly different to both the bars on our busses. Reason for the ?s is that we are saving up for a Vintage speed for the wife's Dormobile.
Here is a pic
Cheers

HAPPY NEW YEAR punks see you at the top !!!!

wow lots of pipework , I've only ever tapped into one port and boosted brakes have always worked fine, big n small cammed engines , nice progress on the ute 🙂
binner ·
^^^^^^^smoke the peace pipe, I love hoses all over the engine bay. I read about 1 port 2 port all ports and so many different conclusions so in the end I took Mr Berry's advice and went with all.
forgot about relocating the accelerator tube thru the fan housing and proceeded to drill thru the edge of my oil cooler. I think this thing is never going to get on the road 🙁 ..... ordered a new cooler and I can't even sit back and have a beer to calm me because I made a heavy bet with my mate. No booze for 3 months as of Jan 1st. guddamit!!!
anyone know of a cheap type 3 wagon for sale......I'm not urgent on buying but just starting to look around.
finally got the donk in this weekend, had some dramas with accelerator tube posi and pipes... ohhhh all those pipes 😂
After fabbing up some parts thru the build I have decided to make my own tinware. Can't seem to find the stuff that fits anywhere.
matberry ·
Look'n good Ian. 👍👍

yee haaa,,, chuck the boards in lets go to Byron :-)
Oh,,, maybe wait till after my cardio rehab then :-(
looking good bro :-)
binner ·
cheers fellas.....
Does anyone know where you can purchase thick rubber sheets from? I'm talking about 6-8mm thick, thinking about making a tinware blanket instead of all tin. I want it in one piece so I need a sheet size about 500mm X 600mm.i was thinking about industrial conveyer belt suppliers but it isn't that wide ....(i think)
cheers 😀
EDIT- found some good stuff, I'm going against the grain and going to try 20mm *aerospace tile sheet, I just gotta hope I can mould it to shape.
* may not be actual aerospace tile 😂

so Matt, what should I have the valves adjusted at for a new engine?. 6 thou or 4 thou, what kind of driving do I do to ease the engine. Loving that V Speed short shifter but my hand seems to hit the handbrake going into first gear. Maybe it needs some adjusting.
I think it will be on the road by Friday if all goes to plan. Had to put on the original paint bumpers for now and wait till I get a cash injection to have them blasted and Pcoated.

Valve clearances depend on what cam is installed. Did you build from scratch? If so cam card will tell you. If unknown, the next question is, how often do you intend to adj valves during the initial start up. My recommended sequence goes like this
Engine build-set valves .004"
Cam break in, 25 min engine time at 2000 to 2500 rpm (NO idling)-cooldown, change oil, adj valves .004"
Engine tune and test drive, full throttle max load asap(3rd gear on a steep hill for a few times is good to bed rings)-adj valves .004"
Drive.....for run in, DO NOT be a pussy- spin to redline occasionally but most important load it up and vary rpm and throttle position during cruise periods....adj valves at 500-1000km depending on how previous checks went .004", oil change and now should be cool for regular service interval.
If you want to be risky/lazy, open clearances and mileages to your descression.
My 2c
