Australian Hillclimb Championships 2011 - Victoria

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/93385/australian-hillclimb-championships-2011-victoria

bat69 ·

Well the Australian Hillclimb Championship is being run over this weekend from Fri to Sun (28th - 30th Oct) at Victoria's Haunted Hills Hillclimb Circuit.

I know the VW Beetles are going to be represented by Heath Campbell and Glen Torrens in the Imp Pro Class and Greg Ward in the Sport Sedan class. Do doubt there will be others running in Fvee and possibly other classes.

Good luck boys and bring home some trophies.

colin ·

To my mates running at the Aussie titles,

Best of luck guys, have fun, tell us how you all went.

Cheers Col

colin ·

Just spoke to Heath and he has reported that at the end of racing today he held a 4 second advantage over his nearest competitor.
He is hopefull that tomorrow he can win his second and back to back aussie title, best of luck Heath.
Greg Ward is having a great battle in his class against some wickedly fast Datto,s, and Glen, well, he,s just doing what he does best, and thats have fun.
Good luck guys.

Cheers Col

Craig Torrens ·

Best of luck to Heath👍

Brian ·

On the last run Greg was getting close to Heaths time but with a much more Expensive engine combination, we'll see what unfolds Tommorrow.

Craig Torrens ·

I doubt Greg will get Heaths time.............Heath has a better engine, better car, and can drive !!!

Craig Torrens wrote:I doubt Greg will get Heaths time.............Heath has a better engine, better car, and can drive !!!
WTF? are you tripping craig....gregs new engine combo is a animal..im sure he is still sorting it out along with how to drive the thing.....and paul z has developed the suspension over a long time to get it where it is.....

any ways, congrats heath, job well done...good to see you bringing the trophy home under the vw banner....love your car and love your driving....keep up the fantastic work....

fabo.....

Craig Torrens ·

haha...but its not getting the results, so its not that much of an animal.......it will probably crap itself like his last motor !!!

colin ·

Okay!

Lets all take a chill pill.

Firstly, racing continues today and Heath allthough holding a commanding 4 plus second gap over his nearest rival has not yet won his class.
I think Heath will agree that announcing that he has allready won shows a lake of respect for his fellow competitors in his class.
Greg is racing hard as ever, and we all should get behind him, and all our mates, in racing and flying the VW flag.
It is a massive personal and financial commitment to compete in this years event.
Best of luck guys, and a safe trip home.

Cheers Col

colin ·

i have received more info about the racing in Victoria from Greg Ward

Not sure how, but a Honda Civic has changed classes, and now is leading the Improved Production class

Honda time,65.14 sec
Heath Campbell 65.38 sec

Greg is running his Yokohama Advan tyres in the Sports sedan class, he is able to run slicks but as yet he is still running the yoko,s.
He is currently 3rd in class time 65.78 sec behind two slick shode cars.

It has been raining this afternoon so times may not get any faster. More updates to come.

Cheers Col

Crikey Craig did you get out of bed on the wrong side the day of your bitter posts? We at one time were all "mates". We travelled and raced together for a few years and now your becoming bitter and twisted. Gregs current engine as you know, is completely unlike his previous engines and has now been raced for 12 months at several meetings, revving past 9 and still seems to be going strong. Who cares if Greg beats Heath (although they are in different classes) just so long as they are having fun and waving the flag for VW beetles, good driver or not.

By the way the comradery amongst the VW racers since you stopped racing is tremendous.

fastnuf wrote:By the way the comradery amongst the VW racers since you stopped racing is tremendous.
I know when I have dropped in to see them racing in recent times, this is certainly very true.

I don't know if this has anything to do with Craig T being there or not though (tend to doubt it).

fullnoise ·

It doesn't matter who wins, as long as it's a VW. It's so cool that VW's have been so tough to beat in hillclimbs for decades.

Go you good things!

Hey Col, are you finished with your cam yet? My car's going so well that it must be time to pull apart again.

bat69 ·

Enough about the negative and more about the +ative.

First of all congratulations to everyone who took the time to travel many hours to VIC and fly the VW flag. Especially for those other racers, like me who could not get their for what ever reason, I would like to thank you for your efforts.

With the $hit house whether, the boys never managed to improve on their positions from the previous day. Heath claimed 2nd in Imp Pro 1601-2000cc. Only missing out by the slightest of margins and, Greg claimed 3rd for sport sedans 1601-2000cc. I am not to sure where GT ended up, apart from him having a heap of fun and mowing some of the mexicans infield.

A big thumbs up to Glen, Greg and Heath for racing the bugs (These are on the only VW racers I know there. Sorry if there are others) and congrates to Heath and Greg for gaining podium finishes in the AUSTRALIAN HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP. Considering the competition, and the fact there was only a couple of tenths of seconds between the positions, this in its self is a dame fine effort. After all this was an Australian Championship. Congratulations.

Greg finally now has the new on board camera working, so you can now hear proper engine noise.. The only down side is there is only one pratice run in the dry. The rest are in the wet which is a real bummer. Either way you still get to see his monster rev off its t1ts.

Which brings us to the subject of weather. Rain... Rain........RAIN!!!!!!It is just un fortunate that the boys did not get the chance to have a crack at their competion in the dry on Sunday. I think positions could have been improved on and different, given that chance.

Everyone is in transit returning home, so have a safe trip home. When Greg has is 'race cam' down loaded it will be added to this post.

cnfabo ·

thanks for the report nathan....safe trip home boys......

How about this; here's a 1:28 lap of Eastern Creek on R-spec tyres Go on, click me NOW

In other news I was at the Skylines Nationals on the weekend and a tortoise crawled across turn 2. Unfortunately it wasn't as fast as a Nissan GTR and unfortunately didn't make the crossing : (

How much mumbo did that thing have??? 🙅

PAZZAN ·

more money more GO

danny m ·

Was there any word which track next years titles will be at

bat69 ·

They will be in NSW and the talk is Mountain View - Grafton, Wakefield park or Fairburn Park. With any luck they will be here.

Gracey ·

Where's the vids?????

bat69 ·

danny m ·

What about Mountain Straight at Bathurst

bat69 ·

There has been talk for the last few years about Mountain Straight, ever since they first ran it as a hillclimb in 2005. The simple answer is it wont happen. It is to expensive to run it over a 3/4 day event as fees, safety personal, road blocks for residents etc are greater in comparison to the Esses, hence the Esses is a chance. Given the fact the last 4 Australians have been held there, it is prob time another venue is considered as there are numerous other top class hillclimlb circuits in NSW.

Bugger!
My crap box would be fun up that side, whats fairburn or wakefield like as Grafton's not really exciting enough on my bucket

Greg wards car certainly has some mumbo, JPM Motorsport must be happy to have one of their 1916 combos running in Australia now.

JPM???? This car has a Stan Pobjoy engine!

Aussie built.

I doubt JPM would bother with Aus but their MS230 heads are nice!

JPM parts Sander

Greg's engine uses JPM engine components including, heads, valves, cam, rockers, pushrods, pistons etc. It uses a Stan crank. It is the first and only one of its type in Australia (at the moment). Engine was machined and assembled in Oz by Stan

Wow, what a beast sorry 76bug, I stand corrected! 😀

Also includes the twin plugging of the JPM heads. A most difficult job.

cool combo

has any info been going back and forth with JPM about the twin plugs......?

Why doesn't anyone go bigger than 1916cc? Does that put you in a different class or something?

vassy66T1 ·

The class that quite a few of the beetles run in is Improved Production under 2 litre.
So yes, capacity/class related.

bat69 ·

danny m wrote:Pushrods engines don't have pushrods suspensions do tho
I'm sorry Danny, but I dont know what you mean.

BTW the Australian Hillclimb Championship is on at Bathurst 'The Esses' the 1st weekend in November. See you there.

bat69 ·

hellbugged wrote:cool combo

Absolutely. Johannes has been following Greg's progress intently as he too has also wanted to twin plug his own heads.

bat69 ·

64vwmark wrote:Why doesn't anyone go bigger than 1916cc? Does that put you in a different class or something?
There are a number of other Beetles which run engines larger (and smaller) then 1916. In NSW the late Ben Durie ran a 1998 (U2L) stroker as too did Paul Zenello. There is also Rene's O2L in S.A too. All have raced with great success on the tar/circuit. There are other U2L strokers in the making also that I know of. The 1916 is just a good and simple engine combo that works (there are others that work well to.. So no B/S about engines sizes please), thats why there are a few running in the hillclimbs.

64vwmark ·

I was just curious that's all. They look like they go well.

It's just me being a dork as I don't remember te last time I had something with pushrods
Yeah I'll be there and should have the strain gauge on the gearshift by then so I'll have to get some practice doing starts

Hey guys what sort of top speed do you guys see on the the Mountain Straight hillclimb at Bathurst as I thinking about doing the state round

bat69 ·

danny m wrote:Hey guys what sort of top speed do you guys see on the the Mountain Straight hillclimb at Bathurst as I thinking about doing the state round

Danny I don't want to know. Plus I dont have a speedo. Anything over 100mph in a Beetle is scarey as they really werent designed to go that fast. If really wont to know you could figure it out if you had a ratio calculator. have a 1.14 top gear, 4.1 diff and last time I was there I was well past the shift light which is set at 7400rpm when coming into McPhillamy. I think Heath would have data from his ECU he could tell you.

BTW. Its official. The Australian Hillclimb Championship is at Bathurst. Mountain Straight. Perfect for a big reving donk like yours. Hope to see you there and at the State round in March.

Woohoo I'll have to get the strain gauge on the gear lever done now! now just have to find some tyres
Hey whats the record for that one

fastnuf ·

Mountain Straight Bathurst

3J Improved Production 1601cc - 2000cc is 53.20 - Held by Heath Campbell in his VW Beetle.

danny m ·

Who do I talk to about an entry and is the record attainable or will Heath disown me if I beat it

Bathurst Light Car Club 02 6332 4662

Danny all records are there to be broken so good luck. However about Heath disowning you I think he secretly has because you drive a bloody Ford. 😂

Craig Torrens ·

danny m wrote:Who do I talk to about an entry and is the record attainable or will Heath disown me if I beat it
You should be able to smash the record Danny......you need to have a gearbox that will let you get to about 180kph.

Gearbox no problems and have a diff ratio's from 3.7 tp 5.3 so I'm thinking 5.1 and 10,000rpm

Hi Danny
I have received a full list of entrants for the weekend via email.
If BLCC have your email address from your entry form, you should also have a list by now.
If not i can email you a list.
Glen and myself are looking forward to a big weekend of racing and catching up over a camp fire.
See you there.

Cheers Col

danny m ·

Hi Col
They've sent me the entry list and I was surprised Heath's not on the list, are the Datsun 1200 guys quick as I don't think I've seen them before and what happened to Craig Torren's

Unfortunately Heath won,t be competing at the first few rounds this year.
He is currently working on a new engine combo and is hoping to attend a few rounds later in the year, from what he has told me the new combo will be deadly. As if he needs to go faster, he,s to quick as it is.
The Datto guys have some real potential and lots of hp, on there day they can nail some quick times.
Craig Torrens raced in his Evo last year but hasn,t raced his Beetle for a while now.
Glen and i will be arriving Friday afternoon to set up camp and relax into a beer or two, come on over.

Cheers Col
