I just finished narrowing and lifting the centre pin on my bus beam. Also bought some adjustable spring plates.
binner ·
nice work their chief, good to see people still doing their own work.
how many hours was spent on that?......
zapzap
rossdanialnaumov ·
Thanks. It took me a weekend. I had to fabricate a jig as i didnt have my bus with me. The next one will be a lot quicker I'm sure plus I'm going to use all new tubes and lazercut side plates. I loved doing it!
Klaus ·
i can see a chassis notch and tubbing coming on 🙂
dragsters for life ·
bitchin ross looks way better in big pics than on the phone
good work mate and cant wait to see it mounted up
Vw nutter ·
Very nice, where did you buy the adjustable spring plates from?how much?
Kombirod ·
what does raising the centre pin do??
rossdanialnaumov ·
Sorry for the late response guys. I didn't realise I had reply's!
Klaus - Yep chassis notch and tubs are next! 🙂
Hey Eccles! Yeah mate! I'm hanging to get this thing parked out front! Before xmas is looking really good!
Kombirod - Raising the centre pin gives you more ground clearance from the lower beam to the ground. If somethings going to hit it'll hit the lower beam opposed to the centre pin, not that you want it to hit but getting things out the way as much as possible makes for a safer mod. The centre pin sits about half inch lower than the lower beam. A must for slamming a bus.
Klaus ·
youll be scraping the drag link first ha ha ...geez never done that 🙂...
I'll be interested to see how you go with these, thinking of getting some for my bay. Are these the 0 offset ones?
rossdanialnaumov ·
Yup. No welding, flip them so the ball joint fits from underneath. Neet idea and it gives you an extra inch.
Split Rat ·
Spindles look good.
How much did they set you back and did they require a core set for exchange?
Also noticed that Transporterhaus will post worldwide free in the month of December.
Could be a good deal.:😎
Definitely take advantage of free shipping worldwide! Great deal!
rossdanialnaumov ·
Here's some progress shots of the beam getting installed. Apart from a few minor mods it bolted straight up and everything clears good and well.
rossdanialnaumov ·
1/ First coat of paint
2/ A quick mock up

rossdanialnaumov ·
On the ground!

a few more
77dual ·
Looks very cool 😎 How much did you narrow it by? Looks like more than 4 inches!
Want to build me one for my late bay DC?
captainvw ·
Thats cool as shit hows it ride ?
rossdanialnaumov ·
Thanks guys!
77dual - it's just shy of 5 inches. You can't really go any more unless you start doing body modifications. I'm in the process of building brand new narrowed beams so yeah I'd love to build you one. You can call me on 0412 441 831 or PM me. Do you live in Melbourne? I think I've seen your work ute in Albert Park.
captainvw - Still got to bleed the brakes and put in rear adjusters. It should ride really nice with all brand new front end components and 3.5 flipped spindles. I'll let you know when I take it for spin!
surfpig ·
Fark yeah it looks so good!
I would love to see a rollin' pic
77dual ·
No not from Melbourne mate.
A brand new one would be awesome, I've been hoping someone would start building them for bays 😎
I'll give you a call soon.
cheers, Scotty
dragsters for life ·
looks good ross
rossdanialnaumov ·
Thanks Eccles! 🙂
Hi Scotty, you can easily find beetle and split beams but yeah, bays not so much. Give me a call anytime and we can chat about what you want and budget. There's a few different way of going about it.
Cheers,
Ross
Klaus ·
how far is the beam off the ground ? looks sweet
rossdanialnaumov ·
Hi Klaus, The lowest point is 90mm off the ground. It looks lower than it really is although 90mm isn't much I thought there'd be less. I think 110mm is the minimal legal height in Vic.. does anyone know?
starkz ·
Hey Ross, how did you mount your front shocks. When I built my beam I had trouble because the shock bolts on the arms were going to come up and hit the end plates. Your beam looks the same. Hope this makes sense. Also what shocks to you plan to run in yours.
Rory
surfpig ·
its 100mm in nsw, probably around the same for vic i would imagine.
i would worry about it anyway, not until you get pulled over at least
Klaus ·
thats a good height , my dc was 80mm for a while now back up to 100 , just run bug shocks empi 9650 or 9652
rossdanialnaumov ·
Hey starkz: you need to make sure you have end plates that extend towards the back of the car. This allows the shock to clear the side plate bolts. Does this make sense? Shocks.. mmm.. still working that out. Thanks for your suggestion on beetle shocks Klaus!
surfpig: 100mm - perfect... I'm not far away then.
nbturbo ·
Do you need to have these front end mods inspected? Will they allow ball joints to used upside down?
matberry ·
nbturbo wrote:Do you need to have these front end mods inspected? Will they allow ball joints to used upside down?
Who's 'they' ?
I agree NB, upside down ball joints look questionable.
In a beetle the ball joints are one each way, but in the offroad Thing, VW needed a tougher suspension setup and turned both ball joints to face downward. They are this way in a bus normally, and are much stronger orientated that way.
Looks way cool tho 🙂😘
nbturbo ·
In SA the Road Transport Authority do all the vehicle testing-and that wouldn't get the OK.
rossdanialnaumov ·
Yep you're right. Not legal.
Klaus ·
the ball joints have a circlip that clip into a machined groove in the arm so not going anywhere and they are not stock bus balljoints all the info is out there on this setup check T2Detectives and transporterhaus
rossdanialnaumov ·
Thanks Klaus.
Hawaiin Stan ·
Ross this is a work of art, you have clearly been chosen as the one to do gods work. Blessed be the lowered and all those that drive them, thank you .
rossdanialnaumov ·
Thanks Hawaiin Stan! I'm chuffed at your comment, thank you 🙂 Glad to hear from a fellow slammer 🙂
Hawaiin Stan ·
I WISH, in my dreams my bus looks like yours but in reality its suffering from altitude sickness. I will live through your efforts until mid year until i can afford to get mine done. My only problem will be front beam can u recommend anyone near sydney who could do the business, again great job.
my 76 bay ·
WOW!!! That looks sweet.
rossdanialnaumov ·
Hi Hawaiin Stan - Love to see some pics of your. Post em up! I can do you a narrowed beam no probs. Shoot me a PM or you can call on 0412 441 831
Thanks my 76 bay!
Hawaiin Stan ·
Thanks for your offer rossdanialnaumov, will give you a ring soon to talk about it. Sorry it,s taken so long to get back to you but i,m semi retarded and couldn,t work out how to post photo,s. Also how much round figures to slam it like yours?
rossdanialnaumov ·
Nice bus Hawaiin Stan. Dig that colour and the contrast of the white rims! Call me on 0412441831 so we can discuss what you need.
Cheers!

77dual ·
Looks awesome Ross, well done mate 😎
rossdanialnaumov ·
Thanks Scott!
I found some needle bearings too. Did you order some flipped spindles?
77dual ·
Flipped spindles have arrived! Sweet that you found needle bearings, now I just need some time to get the cash together for a beam. I'll be in touch once I do Ross.
Again, your bus looks so fucking cool 😎
How's the ride?
rossdanialnaumov ·
Nice! They took a while for mine to get here so good going.
The front rides beautifully, especially considering how low it is. Doesn't bottom out, soaks up big bumps and pot holes very well. I'm so happy and surprised at how well it's turned out. I still want to get koni ajustables for the front to see what difference it makes. The back Is a differnt story. I need to notch the chassis as it's bottoming out. The car has a slight rake which I want to level but I can't do it until I notch. Hopefully I'll get this done in Feb.
Are you fitting your spindles? I look forward to hearing how yours rides Scott!
77dual ·
Sounds good, you must be really happy with it.
I think I'll wait to fit mine until I can get a new beam from you, seems silly to fit them to this beam only to pull them off again once the new one's in.
rossdanialnaumov ·
Yes that makes sense. I did the similar thing by getting all the parts together then assembling them in one go. Are you doing the work yourself?
77dual ·
Yep I'm going to give it a go, once we move house and I have a decent garage.
I've never worked on the front end before so it should be interesting!
rossdanialnaumov ·
You'll be fine Scott. They're very simple. Talk soon mate!
77dual ·
I hope so!
Check out melburgluft.com lots of cool vw's and some nice blokes too. It'd be a good way to advertise too, they love their narrowed beams 😎
rossdanialnaumov ·
Apparently you need an invite to join.
77dual ·
You can just go to the site and put in a request to join, I'll vouch for you. I don't think there'll be a problem, especially since your bus is just the style they like 🙂
They have monthly meets too that you can just go along to and have a chat.
rossdanialnaumov ·
Ok cool! I'll do that now.
rossdanialnaumov ·
Hi Scott.
I just tried to contact administrator on admin@melburgluft.com but it seems the email bounced back. Any idea who to email?
77dual ·
My mistake Ross, sorry, things have changed a little since I have been on there. The fellas prefer it if you go along to their monthly meet first and just have a chat. There's one on this Saturday if you can make it. Wish I was down there and able to get along to these myself 🙂
