My '60 Bug - SOLD

zoofish ·

SO nearly 2 years into my very first restoration, so it is about time that I uploaded some pics....Some photo's below.

Hoping to get her finished very soon :)

Great stuff zoofish and looks like you are doing a great job. I see you cut and fitted a rag top section, something I would have loved to have done.

Even though its good watching a car over time as it slowly builds, I always like it when you can see all the work that has been done in a short time as you have posted (hope that makes sense).

Well done and please keep us updated, Kev

P.S. Where are you located.

vwrallycar ·

excellent work, i love the colour

Thanks Kev. I'm in Sydney and yes seeing the car 'fast forwarded' in pics is much more rewarding to see/follow 🙂

Thanks Andrew. Thrilled with the colour after thinking about 20 other 'possible' colours 🙂. Hoping to drive it to the Nationals in May.

Craig S ·

Fantastic work. It looks great 👍 It's clear that you've not spent the past two years doing nothing!!!

Normally I'm not a fan of the later Porsche wheels on early Beetles, but they suit the colour really well.

I take it those are indicators that you've put on the side just forward of the doors? And is that a hole for the mirror mounting just above it?

zoofish ·

Thanks for that. Yes, I'm still eager to see what the wheels look like on the car once it is finished and then I'll make the call on whether to keep them or source another set of Porsche wheels.

Yes that is the indicator on the side, as we took the 'peanut' indicators off the top of the fender. The holes above are for the chrome molding and the two holes diagonally in front and below the indicator are for the 2 post aerial (The car previously had one fitted, so we thought we'd keep it). The mirrors will mount on the door hinge.

Cheers,
Trevor🙂.

Dasdubber ·

Nice work Trevor - the car is sitting nicely with the stance and offset of the wheels working well. Brings back a lot of memories of my ragtop. You've done a great job so far, hopefully will see it if I can get down for the nationals.
Cheers
Al

Its the Dasdubber Ragtop's brother !

Craig Torrens wrote:Its the Dasdubber Ragtop's brother !
Thanks Al,

YES, I still LOVE your old Ragtop and odd that they ended up looking so similair 🙂. Still thinking about a set of Airkewld BAD Series discs to bring the wheels in a tad more...But first things first, get it on the road and then we can go from there 🙂.

Cheers,
Trevor🙂.

zoofish ·

OOPS!

Handy ·

Wow, this looks fantastic, very impressive.

captainvw ·

Cool i like the floor in your shed too

zoofish ·

It's been a while since my last update, but work has been progressing slowly whilst we wait for parts to arrive, painting to be completed, seats to be returned and carpet kit to arrive, BUT the hoodliner, ragtop, pop-out windows, 911-style lenses, U.S.-Spec taillights, petrol tank and german running boards are on....Boot, doors and engine lid go back on over the weekend, so more pics soon. Hoodliner still needs some minor adjustment in the ragtop section 🙂

tar76 ·

Nice!!

toey1984 ·

nice , neat, smooth finish!
i like it. shout be proud of that one
Keep up the good work

sikras ·

whos rx3 i saw in the background ? for sale by any chance

zoofish ·

Slow progress this week, as we wait for parts to finally arive. In the mean time the bonnet is back on - a few more tweaks until I'm completely happy with it.

zoofish ·

Seats go in - Bad light in the garage, as the leather isn't THAT red to the naked eye. Seats nearly completed...

Craig S ·

Looking fantastic, can't wait to see this one on the road in the flesh. All done for the Nationals?

psimitar ·

She looks lovely dude 🙂

Few q's tho.
1st, where did you get the headliner from? Mines a 59 without sunroof and the centre piece is missing so I have no reference.
2nd, I thought upto 1960 had semaphores? My 59 has but thought 60's did too?

Good luck with finishing her off.

grimbear64 ·

What great car love the colour but I have to ask where did you get the headlight's from with the indicator in them love them

zoofish ·

Thanks for your comments mate. I ordered the shooed liner from cip1.com, as they were out of stock at Wolfsburg West. The colour is 'off white' but the vinyl is much more beige than their colour sample, but works perfectly with the car's colour.

As for the semaphores, mine was a late '60 and doesn't have semaphores. I've seen other '60's with semaphores and others without them. So I can only put it down to a change somewhere during 1960 🙂.

Thanks again mate

zoofish ·

grimbear64 wrote:What great car love the colour but I have to ask where did you get the headlight's from with the indicator in them love them
Thanks - the colour is much better than I could ever have imagined 🙂. I pulled it out into the sun today, so I'll pop a pic or two up shortly.

With the headlights, they are US-style headlights, with H4 sealed headlights and we just replaced the lower bulb to an indicator bulb and rewired it. You can buy the US-style headlights from anyone with the VW Part shops.

zoofish ·

FINALLY the car is out in the sun just before it goes for German Square Weave carpets tomorrow...

THAT exhaust catches EVERYWHERE! May have to rethink...mmm...

hellbugged ·

Thats beautiful!.......well done!

Vinatge speed exhaust would be good for clearance.

Craig Torrens ·

yep vintage speed or a sidewinder will certainly help.

zoofish ·

hellbugged wrote:Thats beautiful!.......well done!

Cheers...YES a Vintage Speed exhaust is the option I've been contemplating for a few months now. The Chico Performance engine from Cali arrived with these exhausts on, but we've started ordering them for customers with Vintage Speed gear and they look and sound GREAT!

I've got a goal of 4 weeks and it'll be on the road (Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself)..

dubstar ·

Beautiful

dubstar ·

What's the colour?

zoofish ·

dubstar wrote:What's the colour?
Cheers mate. The colour is a Volkswagen colour called 'TAXI'. This beige is lighter than the New Beetle 'Harvest Moon' Beige.

zoofish ·

Tan GSW Carpet is in... The race to finish is on.

zoofish ·

Work continues...whilst we wait for the last piece of GSW Carpet to arrive...

snitz ·

Nice build...Love it!!😎😎.We are running the same seats in my wifes '70 Beetle..Did you cut down the mounting frame provided by Scat? as our seats sit quite high and need to have the frame cut down. Also who supplied your carpets?..they look very nice..regards Jason.

JohnnyMac ·

Love it 👍👍👍

Hi Jason,

Thanks for your post - Yes they are SCAT seats. We tried cutting down the frames, but the seats were still a tad high, so we cut them to their bare minimum in order for us to fit (6'4" Drivers) with a large rim steering wheel, just doesn't work, hence the cut.

As for the GSW, I bought the carpet in a roll and then had them custom made to fit the car by a company here in Sydney (Name escapes me, but I'll email you later this week with their name/number, if you'd like).

Cheers,
Trevor🙂.

zoofish ·

Ignore the dumb exhaust...It came with the engine and is heading to eBay

matberry ·

Top class. 👍👍

AUSSIE_MICK ·

zoofish ·

Thanks Mick - She'll be making her debut at The Nationals next week in Fairfield

AUSSIE_MICK ·

See you there

Weeds ·

Beautiful!

TOPCAT69 ·

Very nice ride.great choice on colour and carpet.love it, welldone zoofish🤪

psimitar ·

That looks great 😀

Couple of questions tho. Where did you buy the carpet and where did you buy the mexican style decklid seal?

Cheers,
Mike

zoofish ·

Thanks Mike.

I bought the Mexican seals online from vwparts.net, (which has just changed its' name to piersideparts.net) - as nobody seemed to sell them in Sydney.

The carpet I bought from Classic British & German, (which has also just changed its' name to Prostitch), here in Sydney and then had the carpet custom made from the 5m roll at a great little auto interior shop in Camden - who believe it or not has also just changed its' name 🙂.

Cheers,
Trevor🙂.

Hi Hus - I'll send you the painters details tomorrow.

zoofish ·

The car was painted by Lee at Lee's Paint and Panel in a narellan (02) 46470611 and the carpet was done by XTRIM in Smeaton Grange (next to Narellan) (02) 46482156

I hope that helps guys 🙂

looked damn good in the flesh. you must be happy with the result.

Paulc1964au ·

saw the car today it is brilliant shame it didnt win a trophy but it was up against stiff competition. Zoofish you must be out near me i'm out Campbelltown way as well.

The exhaust you had on today is that the final? Love the fact you have a 1776 thats what i'm getting, I actually spoke to you about it today, we good to meet you

zoofish ·

whatnow wrote:looked damn good in the flesh. you must be happy with the result.
Thanks - Yes I am thrilled with the result, almost as thrilled as i was to get it out of the garage and into the light today. A lot of people had some really nice things to say about the car, which stunned me. A great day out 🙂.

Thanks again and chat soon,
Trevor🙂.

Olive1975 ·

Absolutely gorgeous car Zoofish. Saw it today at the Nationals and my fiancee loved the colour - we have this in mind when we spray Olive in future years. Awesome in photos - more awesome in real life - great car!!

Thanks Paul - yes the car lives very near you, at my folks, where it has been going through its' metamorphosis.

The exhaust is definitely going to make an exit, as it is just impractical and that way I can lower the rear of the car, back to where it was.

I'll let you know when the car is on the road in the next few days/weeks and we can catch up.

Great to chat today.

Cheers,
Trevor🙂.

Paulc1964au ·

yes was great to meet you, mick with the 56 and Camo and I regularly get together so your welcome to join us. what exhaust r u getting the vintage exhaust would suit it

Thanks - you're too kind. Too funny that your car's name is 'Olive' - when we bought the car/shell, it had one sun visor still in the car, when we took it off it had the word 'Olive' stamped into the sun visor - a weird coincidence or perhaps an optional extra - who knows.

Well for future reference the colour is from the current Volkswagen paint catalogue and it is called 'TAXI' - there was no number, just the name, so jot that down so that you it for when you're ready to paint.

Thanks again,
Trevor🙂.

Olive1975 ·

Thanks Trevor - have noted the colour for future use.

zoofish ·

Some last pre-show pics

zoofish ·

Post all the VW Nationals excitement, the work continues, with the Airkewld Air Beam, (that is on the car), about to be hooked up to its' air compressor and tank etc.

The works never ends, but at least it's fun 🙂

After much debate, the Twists are heading to our new T25/T3 project and some interim wheels will go on over the weekend...

Dasdubber ·

G'day Trevor, I have one of the 'discussed' wheels at my workshop if you wanted to loan it to work out your offsets etc (it's 17 x 7 with a 205 (from memory) tyre on it). Happy to send it down to you if you're cool to cover courier cost (have TNT account).
Cheers
Al

zoofish ·

Temporary set of 17" Airevo's went on today so the saving for a set of Iozzio's can begin. Nice to see the wheel tuck under the front guard for once 🙂 Will pull the car outside tomorrow for better pics...

👍

Those Fuch replicas are quite angular compared to the originals. Quite liked the porsche twists meself 🙂

zoofish ·

psimitar wrote:Those Fuch replicas are quite angular compared to the originals. Quite liked the porsche twists meself 🙂
Agree, but they're only temporary. I popped these wheels on as they freebies. The Twists are one of my favorite wheels of all time. Watch this space.

tar76 ·

Mate your shed floor is that lino or sprayed?

They're individual black and white lino tiles/squares that we layed row by row...mmm... Not at all time consuming 🙂

Hold the phone!!!! They were freebie's? Man, thats some expensive alloys to give away. Can I have them when you're done with them? 🙂

I'm also a big fan of the Porsche twists. One of the best alloys Porsche has ever made bar the original Fuch 🙂

zoofish ·

OK so a change of plan after the Twists went to the T3, we found out that they were too wide. SO the Airevo's are now on the T3 and the Twists have had a lick of paint applied. I think the darker wheel looks tough, well until I've saved up for a set of Iozzio's.

Pumba wrote:Are your pop outs repro, how much dramas did you have fitting them ???

Yes, they are repro. Had to drill in the holes to mount the hinge, but they went in super easy, considering that we had never attempted anything like that before. Very happy with the outcome on our very first restoration.

PS: Bought the kit from Mike and Boris at Vintage VW in Sydney.

Cheers.

Pumba ·

I just picked up a set for my oval,i noticed you cut the peice out of the pinch weld near the hinges, does your pinch weld have the rubber on it and is it the larger profile pinch weld or small ???
cheers shane.

zoofish ·

This weekend, the bumpers went on, we got the horn to work and readjusted the suspension and brakes - think we have a faulty new dual master cylinder as the brakes work for a bit and then start fading fast...mmm...Make that a next weekend repair and the last piece of carpet goes in this week...And then the car is COMPLETED!

baghall ·

Only just saw this thread the bug is looking awesome.👍

psimitar ·

SWEET 😀

zoofish ·

OK, the car is done and these are the last pics of her in the sun today. Thanks for following the build and all the comments. Finally we have completed our very first restoration. See you on the road.

Many thanks to my Dad, Cameron, Mike and Adam for all their sweat and hard work and the countless  people who have all helped with their guidance and know-how.

zoofish wrote:FINALLY, the only thing that I skimped on when building this car was the brake kit - I was obviously far more naive at the beginning of the build. SO FINALLY the order goes in this week for a set of BAD Series brakes from Pete @ Airkewld.
Make sure you show these to a vehicle engineer so that you KNOW they'll be signed off as ADR compliant. If you bolt them on and have an accident then the insurance won't pay out if the accident adjuster spots them 🙂

zoofish ·

3 weeks to go before the Nationals, so got to get to sorting out a few things before then. Managed to get it out in the sun on the weekend.

A little bit different from a year ago:

benny_acko ·

Did you have any issues with rego/engineer with all your modifications?
Especially the BAD brakes?

zoofish ·

Hi,

Haven't ordered the brakes yet as I am thinking of CSP Brakes.
benny_acko wrote:Did you have any issues with rego/engineer with all your modifications?

psimitar ·

Before you even buy the brake kit go and see the engineer who will sign off on it. If he don't like the look of the wheel mounting plate then you'll have just wasted the money.

This I have learnt from wide 5 kits as they view the plate as an adapter and as per ADR these are not allowed.

Just giving you a heads up b4 you order them.

Love the Twisties in silver instead of black tho reckon I'd go a bigger profile to fill the rear a bit more 🙂

zoofish ·

Have already done just that. Thanks.
