Not quite, in fact I just bought another VP in near perfect factory condition for 1100 buks! 馃槀
But I am seriously have enough driving one around the city for work, Just can't keep up with the maintenance anymore and its starting to really show with poor performance and fuel economy.
So I figured I buy this VP and use my current work car as a spare parts bin for the manual conversion, brake upgrade etc.... Seriously awesome cars to drive!
Plus I need something in the mean time to do as I collect NOS type 3 stuff.
Yeah I been told to stay away from golf for that ^ reason.
So I am like "ok! lets look at other 4 cyl cars"
too expensive!
too unreliable!
crap economy
crap economy
crap enonomy
good economy but never heard of it?
too new, can't fix it
too new, can't fix it.
auto
auto.
FFFFUUUUUUU!!!!!! 馃槵
hard to find a car that will do 40mpg+ like mine did on the highway?? Most of the 4 cyl struggle to get 28mpg let alone 40mpg
I think I am just going to fix it up, replace the injectors, new rotors and QFM pads and maybe if I can find another T5 just so I don't have to combat the enormous backlash in 1st, 2nd and R. and maybe also a new clutch and machined flywheel which are pretty sad from < previous problem that caused the clutch to take a beating.
This other VP I am buying has a fantastic engine somehow doesn't have the characteristic buick rattle and its at 255K !!!馃お
I'll keep that as a spare engine 馃憤 the new VP is planned for an ecotec anyways.
I am wondering why even bother if I can't even find a 4 cyl that beats mine that is in the same price range and is still 90s and I can fix myself?
the other option is buy a brand new gearbox and engine for about new 800 for the box and 2400 for new very mildly worked engine.
Car will be like brand new again as everything else like suspension steering is spot on as I rebuild everything periodically anyway.
I hav't made a decision yet, will keep plotting along and see how it goes.
BRUTUS 路
Why not get the/a type 3 going? A Manual type 3 should give 30-35mpg in country, in solid type-3 style. And no nasty electronics (unless you want the EFI type, and you can even get that if you must). Why would you want a Holden or Golf?!
vlad01 路
well I need reliability.
I would drive a type 3 only if I had ample money for a type 4 engine to put in it.
1000-1500ks a week is not uncommon for me so I don't thing a type 1 engine can do that.
How many times have you guys fixed something up on the type 1 engine? how many times have you guys broken down?
How many time have I had the v6 break down? I can't say it ever has in the 5 years I have owned it. sure I have fixed things like changing the manifold gasket and thermostat once. due for injectors as the last reco ones I installed last year have crapped out due to poor fuel at Calderpark station, also took out everything else in the fuel system. Not the cars fault.
Something like a Honda accord 93-96 would be great but it will use a bit more fuel. not much point at this stage but still its one of my top choices if I want to retire the commy.
Yogie 路
Our beetle has done 165,000 reliable kms since we built a new 1641cc engine for it with only routine maintenance. I am not sure it could match the fuel economy of the dunnydore but as long as you look after it, I can't see why it shouldn't be reliable.

Looked into a GL or CL MK3 Golf?
Simple, reliable, modern cars that are much easier to get parts for than say a MK2 or Aircooler.

Bit unfair comparing a 40 year old car to a 20 year old but even so when they both break down I know which is gonna be simpler to fix on the side of the road.
Bit hard to go all Macgyver with cable ties and duct tape on modern fuel injected cars.

yeah grab a mk3 golf.. 2.5-3.5k cheap reliable. go for 400,000kms if serviced.
ive had heaps of them.
electric windows fail
aircon needs rego around 180k
about your only problems that can come about
vlad01 路
ok thanks for the input peps
so mk3 is around late 90s yeah?
Joel. I don't know my way around a carby car as much as simple EFI that is on mine.
As long as the CAS doesn't fail the car will continue to runs with several or its sensors/components failed, Limp home mode ftw! and at least it tells me straight out whats wrong with the use of a paper clip. 馃憤
Done the paper clip diagnostic many times! full proof!
Yes I have fixed things to get me out of trouble with zip ties so you lie! 馃榾

You know, when my boss eventually gets a company car none of this would even matter as I would be driving 20% less in my car which would equate to 50 % less fuel and I would say 100% less wear and tear. 馃お
Simply because from home to work is pretty much 110km/s all the way with maybe a hand full of gear changes getting from my house to the highway which is few ks and about 4 turns then 3 turn 1km from the high way to the car park at work.
As soon as I go around melbourne to see customers and do services and repairs all the way around the city I would do I recon at least 50-100 clutch cycles.
on those traffic jam days my leg will be killing and I would of pressed my truck like clutch a gazillion times!
( the car doesn't go any slower than about 10-15kmh, 500rpm in 1st)
I have to get my clutch pedal bushes and pin replaced as the have worn right out. so much play and squeaks like a bastard.
I will ask my boss about the company car he promises, that would be problem solved I recon馃憤

what would it cost, how hard would it be to buy rear ended or t boned later model v6 commodore and move stuff over?
Joel 路
Mk3s in Aus started around 94, lot later than other countries and finished about 98 or 99.
There's a few different engines in them, Pov paks only had a 1.8 TBI and the 2L had multipoint, much better engines.
There is also the turbo diesel and VR6s too, those things hammer.
vlad01 路
amazeer wrote:what would it cost, how hard would it be to buy rear ended or t boned later model v6 commodore and move stuff over?
about 500 bucks and a day.
I wouldn't buy t boned car. I learned my lesson last time I bought a diff from a 140k VS that was smashed in the front, nothing major but still enough to send a shock down the drivetrain and completely stuff the pinion bearings in the diff.
Like I said I will have a spare engine from this VP I am picking up Friday and I know a young guy, maybe 22? has a yard full of VP and holden stuff. I am going to raid the VP berlina for some interior bits( its 100% factory perfect interior 馃お)
Its the same VP I used the fuel tank and 2nd good diff from. 馃憤

i have been using my type 3 as a daily for nearly a year, only a couple little problems but not as many as my wifes vs
the late type 3s are pretty damn tuff and i find mine does daily pretty darn well and hey you wont look as stupid driving a type 3 as you would driving a crappydore
vlad01 路
I bought myself that bombadore and its fantastic! great car in fantastic condition!
anyways I talked to my boss about this company car, ain't going to happen for some time. So I am going to decommission my current crap box in the new year sometime and get myself something small, reliable, auto and fuel economical for the rat race.
My mate Troy recons 2000 lancer. he drive one of them for a company car and it just keep going he recons and fuel economical too?
I will have to look into it.
I won't be doing anything just yet.
I was going to buy a VS but the one I looked at blew the engine when I revved it. Was on its last legs for sure!
too late now! the VP I got is frigin awesome! I love these cars, so simple even a monkey can fix it not that much serious goes wrong with them anyway.
amazeer 路
I bought my third lancer at easter this year. My second which I still have is a 97 1500 model with just under 300,00km. The ONLY maintenance it has had is 2 timing belts, 1 fuel filter, 2 batteries, 2 sets of front pads (discs still original, rear brake shoes/drums still original) and a few oil filters. Its probably had only 4 or 5 oil filters in all these years! The front brakes are just about due for another round which is disappointing since the first 2 sets got 120K each. Unfortunately it has had a few door/ignition locks, windows, 3 steering columns and 1 wheel because arseholes try and steal it occasionally. There is a noisy bearing in the air con compressor since the missus drove it into flood waters earlier this year. I've neglected it for 12 years and still runs very well, zero smoke, although it does consume a little oil.
vlad01 路
So they are good car? looking on ebay most of them have around 300k and claim to run well?
I have always had the impression Mitsubishi are terrible cars, but that might be from all the magna problems.
hmmm? I might consider one.
amazeer 路
yeah, the astron engine was a piece of shit. stigmas, L300 vans, magnas. Wouldnt go anywhere near them. I traded my first lancer on the bigger magna. The thing handled like it was on rails. Only the rails were those straight ones the Ghan uses across the nullabor. It just would not turn at all!. I owned it for 3 months but only because it took me a month to sell it.
Lancer is a different animal.
dragsters for life 路
we had a magna wagon for years, cost me 2000 and i espent nothing on it in the couple years we ran it, one of the best cars we have owned imo
wew just buy 2000 shitters for the wife to use as work cars but next april she will be in her type 3 lets see how that pans out
vlad01 路
Yep thats the way to go!
car "A" reliable shit box for work
car "B" good nice car for every other non work day, pride and joy!
car "C" super duper mint showroom /performance car (aka awesome vw or Porsche) for the Sunday driver.
those lancers are in the top performers list for fuel consumption. wow 5.2l/100 on highway 馃お and 7.6 in city!
ryana89 路
A Lancer around the 2000 era would make a great work car.
Reliable, easy on fuel, and if the interior gets dirty, you could wash it out with a hose, as virtually everything inside the car, is plastic.
amazeer 路
They were the only car I know of that was lean/clean burning enough to stay carb fed into the 90s. I think the change over to efi was 93, the year I bought my first one.
amazeer 路
not sure that they are any more plastic than any other car. Seats and carpet are cloth, everything else is plastic. But which car isnt?
and how did I stumble upon this holden/mitsubishi forum?
vlad01 路
true!
I might buy one of these latter on next year.
Trust me! if you want general car info a VW forum is the way to go. Go to an actual holden or ford or what ever forum, you will get no answers.
Bloody bunch of bogans! on the holden forums, know nothing, don't respect their own cars and just talk about stupid pipe dream bunning style mods to make their cars do bigger burnouts馃槀馃槵
No wonder these cars have such a bad name.
those guys grind my gears! 馃槵
amazeer 路
world has changed in the last 10 years. Looking at that fuel guide pdf, there are only a couple of diesel cars on the list, and the fuel cost estimates use examples of 80c to $1 per litre. In 10 years time we might see more diesel than petrol. Especially if they make some car only bowsers to keep filthy tradie/truckie hands off the nozzles.
I use the vw forum the same. Computer problems, musical instruments, everything. The other forums are full of people who think they know everything. The VW forum has people that do know stuff on all sorts of topics.
vlad01 路
Yep I agree about the forum thing.
yeah diesel is the way to go in the future but I don't have the expertise and tools to be able to repair a modern turbo common rail diesel.
Simply can't afford to own one, would cost more than what I would make from it. My boss has a jetta 2008 or 09? and they car is great, no problems
but the services cost a fortune! over a 1000 bucks for the timing belt! and thats not even through the dealership, just small mechanic shop.
don't know how k has been spent on his car for services, but its a lot. I can service mine in 20 min and for about 60-70 bucks for oil, oil filter and air filter every now and then.
then there is the major repairs like rebuilding the front end which I can do for under 100 bucks and a sunday.
Its just not worth owning anything new I recon especially for work lol.

I've dealt with a lot of bitsamissing cars over the years,
This wasn't a bad little car and was probably one of the better ones
But it was a very unexciting drive, my Laser is much more pleasant and fun to drive.
But I would not touch anymore bitsamissing with a barge poles, they seem to have some real quality control issues.
New ones seem to have so many problems, have a look at the recall list on the website, nearly every model has a fault.
Mates 09 TD triton dual cab is well over $10k in warranty repairs already and all the fleet cars I had over the years gave problems.
vlad01 路
that^ or honda accord like million mile Joe!
what is civic like? they do 50 mpg apparently?
I am not looking at a fun car. Just has to be small so I can actually park in in melbourne. economical for those 300 km days and for traffic jams.
Hate to admit it but I need an auto as those slow traffic days have nearly destroyed my commy clutch within 20,000km of installing a new one.
It does not go any slower than about 15km/h at idle in 1st. 馃お馃槵So leap frogging it was the only way to move through traffic without people stealing the gap in front of you that you normally use to get the car going properly.
And probably most important is reliability. I take the lancer with a grain of salt as I know how bad all other bitsaremissings are.
I remember when I was doing a work placement through school at the local auto elect we used to see a few magnas come through every month that didn't run. 100% of the times was ECUs that caught fire internally 馃槀
My friend Darcy and his bro got one for their Ps as a first car. Within a year or two they got sick of it breaking down all the time and when it died again they sent it to the wreckers and they only were willing to give 50 buck or something along those lines coz it was so shit 馃憥馃檮

Buy a little 5 door Hyundai Gets auto about 6 litres per 100
DONT buy a diesel car they never took off in the 80s and the market is falling already , Holden and Mazda are already pushing their petrol cars sales again .

amazeer wrote:not sure that they are any more plastic than any other car.
I was actually surprised at the amount of bare plastic in the interior of said friends car.
And the area's that weren't plastic had a really 'hard' feel to them.
I thinks its a base model, 2 door CE(?) Lancer.
Is a good car though, he gets phenominal fuel economy and mod/aftermarket scene for those things is MASSIVE.

I have driven one of those getz before. pretty expensive for just a get around car. The max I would spend is about 3-4k for a work car.
anyway I was getting to the point of the getz. Slow as absolute f**k
and dangerously poor handling even worse than a 85 laser.
and the gearbox goes crunch at my normal rate that I shift 馃お So you have to granny shift them. It had 1037km on the clock so this was factory normals?
though you are right about the good economy they have.
No I wouldn't buy a hyundai, too many problems. I remember my mate Heath and his shit box accent. He paid a very good rate of 6k for a 2001 accent in mint condition and at the same time I got my 92 VP from my uncle. I lol'd at the problems he had, sure I had them too but not as serious as his with an engine failure 馃槀
and electrical problems coz the dumb asses at hyundai forgot to remove the paint before bolting on the ground cables to the various chassis and body points. Can't have a good electrical connection through paint!馃槀
He still has it and still goes but its looking worse for wear, much more than mine and its starting to rust! lol rust! not cancer just surface here and there but still its rust. I don't have any on mine and my paint is completely rooted. One thing holden did good with those cars is make em rust proof.
