Thought I would share my latest addition to my VW family. It's on a boat on it's way over here now from the USA.
A '69 Squareback Panel Van originally from Norway then bought to the UK then taken to the USA & now will soon call Australia it's final home.
Plans are to drive it as a semi daily driver for a few years, while tinkering around with a few taste fully done custom mods. Long term plans are a possible body off resto, see what happens. Either way it is going to be highly cherished.
If all goes to plan it will be on the road here in Brisbane mid February, 2012.

Thanks, yeah I had been watching it myself for about 18 months. Procrastinating about it for so long & finally was over there in September this year & went to take a look. Once I saw it I knew I had to have it. Gonna be stoked to have it here soon.

OHH Man that is awesome!! I have a real soft spot for type 3 as i learnt to drive in one back in the early 90's and my DAD had 3 back in his home town of Barbados. Mate if you see a guy at Dubs with his jaw dragging on the ground looking at your square it's just me admiring!!

Yeah I know... this one will not be getting windows while I own it that's for sure. If only I could track down some original panels to one day re-do the '62 back into a panel van again. Don't like my chances of that though.

You'd more the likely have to get the panels made up. Shouldn't be too hard to done by a sheet metal worker

Nah, wouldn't do it unless I found originals. Just wouldn't be right otherwise I feel.

Nice one Clint - your toughest decision will soon be which one to actually drive!! 🙂

Picked up the Panel Van today, very stoked. Took it straight in to get compliant seat belts fitted. Next is RWC & go cruising. This is gonna be fun. Got a few things I wanna do to it over the months ahead. Updates when they happen.
One thing I was really stoked on was that I got the Californian plates as well, will make for a nice souvenir.
tar76 ·
F@%k that is just awesome!! Good to see it made it down here with no worries and does this mean it could be at dubs??

Hey Extremely nice car. Can you please tell me what the deal was with importing a modified car? I was under the impression from a few magazine articles that you couldn't import early cars that have been modified anymore. There are a few stories around of American muscle with mag wheels and big motors even new paint jobs that are sitting on the docks because they wont pass them for rego. If is as easy as you have made it look I might go shopping.
Best of luck with you panel, I am very jealous.

Thanks !! I have had no issues what so ever. Maybe VW's slide under the radar? Not sure? My freight forwarder has never mentioned anything about that stuff. It says on the import permit that having an import permit is no guarantee that the car will get passed for rego though. But again from my experience VW's seem to slip through. Fingers crossed anyway. Hope that helps.

Further more to this.... If the car is pre '89 it's very relaxed with no restrictions on importation. Just always get the import permit before its even booked on a boat. Very important. Without that the car can on worst cases be crushed before entry. So I have been told. It's all easy, just have the import permit and all will be ok.

Thanks... yeah gotta work out that driving roster !!

Gave the panel it's first wash today which gave me the perfect chance to go over the entire car in detail. I am very pleased with my purchase. Really looking forward to getting it on the road & to start adding my own touches.
Got the '62 out as well for a wash & some photos.

Looking good mate! 😎

cant wait to see all three lined up with some bmx in the shots

The panel van is now 100% road registered as of yesterday. It was awesome going for that first drive even though if it was stuck in peak hour traffic going to the Dept of Transport. After a nervous wait there the car was registered without a hitch. You just never know how that stuff will go sometimes. But no issues what so ever.
Had the Black Mumba shifter fitted as well as a full service today. I am very impressed with the shifter. It's so solid & the feel is great. I would recommend one of these to anyone. I am stoked I went for the shifter with the serial number of 1969 as well, makes for a nice touch I say.
Looking forward to the cruise up to Dubs this Sunday. Will be cruising everywhere the next few days (well to the office & back at least) I am happy camper. See some of you Sunday perhaps, come up & say hi as I don't know many faces around here yet.
Burrelli ·
I like that panel van😎

Gotta love my panel van. Had to do some deliveries of bikes today to various shops around Brisbane so thought why not take the panel van for a cruise. Had to be one of the coolest delivery vans on Brisbane roads today, haha. Love this car, so practical & styles for miles.
