VW Sydney Showdown 2012

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/94860/vw-sydney-showdown-2012

VWMA Editor ·

Hi All,

The online registration for the VW Sydney Showdown 2012 on February 25th is now open at www.vwma.net.au

The 'honour'(?) of first entry is shared between Rose Merrett and Steve Craven. They can fight over the title....

Ian&Rose Automotive have also thrown $300 into the race kitty for the first competitor to cut a perfect light. Failing that the prize pool will be divided into 3 x$100 and awarded to the 3 best lights of the day. Thanks Rose and Ian.

On the website you will have also noticed the $5000 cash incentive from Vintage VeeDub Supplies. The ET is quick, but they are recording those times in the US and Europe.

More soon.

Cheers
Craig

Just registered... man its easy to register for it. I like the system craig! I set up a rear apron and engine lid for the event as i thought i'd have to run one! turns out i dont... at least it will protect my engine on the trip down 😂 nothing has really changed since warwick except the engine lid, removable drivers door and i might put a couple more stickers on it! 😂 after this event we'll stick it on the dyno then pull the engine down, bigger cam, port heads and replace the cracked case.

typethreeking ·

Why not dyno before the event would be better, then after Sydney pull the engine down and rebuild it...lol , but we knew what you meant😂😘😂😁

Car looks good Barry. Hope you get it running soon

Any of the Mexican's making the trip?... I know a few good ol boys from Radilaide are talking about it.... Think I'll be the only WA visitor 👍 .... Sure wish I could bring the car..... 🙁

Hey CT is that a Jensen Interceptor beside the Oval?

It's not a Jensen, though my Uncle used to have one, it's a Lancia Fulvia Zagato 1.3 Sport. It has a wonderful sounding V4 with twin side-draft solex carbies. It looks amazing. But the oval runs rings around it!

By chance is that the old 'barn find/little old lady' car you messed with back in the early 90's?.... Spindle mount front wheels and massive 52mm (?) IDA's?.... Got some pics from the Nationals 1/8th mile at Oran Park somewhere.

Hi Humpty,
You mean this old car?

This car is long gone, the only parts I have off the car are the rear wheels.and the cylinder heads. These are the only photos I have of it, these were taken at the 1993 nationals.

VWMA Editor ·

Hi All,

Entries close this Friday 17th February 2012. If only for my sanity, don't leave it to the last minute if you intend competing. I encourage anyone considering racing to do so, as the VW scene has been given an excellent opportunity to have their own day on the quarter and it should be grasped with both hands. Track days at Sydney are a precious commodity so please make the most of it in 2012 - don't wait for next year.

The format for racing will be the same as in 2011, with the four classes - Aircooled, Watercooled, VW Bodied and VW Special - competing in a round robin dial your own competition. The Top VW Shootout is open to all vehicles from the four classes who run an 11.85 or better for the quarter. The 11.85 cut-off is quick, but fair given some of the times being run by the VW regulars on the quarter. It's also not too far away from those who are aiming to go even faster at Sydney.

A reminder to check the website for racing requirements and driver apparel, and please be mindful of the ET brackets - I would not like to see anyone go home early because they did not take note of the information.

There will be one more update next week, and as I mentioned before, a notice to cancel should the weather forecast look grim, will be made by text and email on Wednesday 22nd February at 5pm.

See you on the track

Cheers
Craig Hughes

Since scrutineering finishes before 1.30pm,
you may want to try and make an arrangement with Craig Hughes,
or get someone to put your car through for you before you get there.
Only Craig H or the track officials could confirm this.

dangerous ·

vw54 wrote:I just looked up to see if the SS C Class records still stands with the VWs

Dave, that class is for "Super Sedan" and is for normally aspirated cars, no boost nor n2o.
Michael Nash is the only Australian car that has been faster than this,
and he was not able to "back up" the record within the 1% required.
It can only be set at national level events, like Nitro Champs, Nationals and Winternationals,
and when that actual 'eliminator',(Super Sedan) is run.

Cool 👍 👍 👍 Bens shout !!!!

davidoconnor ·

Humpty, man you've got a good memory, I bought those heads over 15 years ago and had all sorts of trouble lugging them half way aroung the world on a backpacker trip. In an x-ray machine I'm sure those valve springs must look like some kind of timing device!!

Since then Dave Butler and Craig Brown have seen these heads on a coule of occasions as the engine saw more and more development. Very efficient heads in terms of broad power delivery. The Comp Eliminators while flowing a stack more, haven't resulted in the track gains we expected. So some 1/4 mile time at Sydney will be an interesting experiment.

Helmet rules ? On vwma web site , Snell m2000 is fine .
But

I know they dont allow you to race on a Wednesday night with the AS1698, it has to be the AS/NZ one..................but if you look at the ANDRA rules they say the AS is allowed until 2013, so its anyones guess !!!

Dak-A-Tak wrote:six up , ( look up)mr Berry from your last post .
Yes Pete, it was your post that prompted me to double check. As in Humpty's post above, the ANDRA site says

"NOTE: From August 2013 only AS/NZS1698:2006 helmets will be acceptable. AS1698 and BS6658 will not be allowed in competition after this date regardless of date of manufacture."

So it looks to me like the AS1698 is ok.

I was hoping Craig was going to confirm this.

CRAIG, WHAT HELMETS ARE ALLOWED AT YOUR SYDNEY EVENT?

matberry ·

Thanks Ian, I just checked your link and IMO it remains ambiguous, The ANDRA link I posted a quote from as above, says it's ok to use a AS 1698 untill 2013 yet Ian's link says it must have a sticker like in the examples at the bottom.....my AS 1698 sticker is Silver, not like any of the examples.

I hope Craig can clear this up.

sander288 ·

Just put my entry in now.

Looking forward to the event if I don't bend the car tomorrow at Huntley

dangerous ·

This is from the 2011/2012 rule book.

dangerous ·

So on the top right hand side, you will see:
"note: all vehicles slower than 10.99 " etc

So unless you are faster than 10.99, you can use:
AS/NZS: 1968:2006
All helmets should have a date of manufacure on them some where.
If yours is manufactured on or after 2006, and has an AS1968 standard, you are good to go.

...and until 2013, you can still use Snell as old as M2005 as quick as 9.00 seconds
or SA2005 for any speed.

Naturally any of the newer M2005 or SA2005 snell helmets are fine up to 9.00 seconds..
M are good to 9.00 and SA 2005 or newer as fast as you want.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Dave , Thats how I see it .
All helmrts older (2000) then 2005 are out for tech race cars .
Depends on what insurance cover the vw drag day is run under (wsid or andra )for the slower cars come under .

Wsid web is for non Andra enents .

Rod is buying a new helmet .

vw54 ·

Come on Pete
Bring yr car down to Sunny Sydney
for a quick run

westi ·

Yeh Pete .
You might actual get a chance to beat me in the junka.it's only a baby engine.go the 1916 wooohooo.
Get on down here and have a crack while you get the chance.
Finally all my new bits have arrived. you may never get the chance again.hahahahaha

1303Steve ·

Hi

I've entered. What are the entry numbers up to now? Will they take late entries?

Steve

1916baja ·

Sorry to go back to the helmet topic, but if my helmet has the as1968 tag but was manufactured in 2002 its no good??

dangerous ·

correct

1916baja ·

Dang..... Thanks Dave.

vw54 ·

Spoke with Craig today still need MORE entries

Dak-A-Tak ·

HA , HA , vw54 & Westi , My Boys in the Hood From Dak-A-Tak shed are coming down to race for me ( Tom , Rod )

Is there a real entry list yet ? from Craig H, I think it helps for people to see who is coming .Not everyone get on here .

Are all the big names from Sydney racing ? Trent , Mike K , Freestone , P Keagan , Rod Penrose ,others .
How many cars from other Sydney vw business are supporting this event ?
How many vws from Vintage Vee Dub Supplies are racing ?
How many water cooled cars are entered ?

1303Steve ·

Hi

I guess Craig would be pretty busy at the moment so maybe someone else can answer a question.

The BYO drinks and food after racing, do we have to leave the track after racing and buy alcohol or can we keep it in our Esky in the pits until after racing?

I'm not planning on having a bender but few brews after a long day would go down well.

Steve

1303Steve ·

Hi

I found these people were good to deal with for helmets if you need one to comply www.thehelmetwarehouse.com.au

Steve

VWMA Editor ·

Sorry Steve - bit swamped. I did get your message. Alcohol may be kept at the track, but not to be opened or consumed until after the final race of the day.

1303Steve ·

hi Craig

No worries another question, will there be any entries allowed on the day, still trying to get the water cooled guys enthused.

do all new helmets bought from respectable shops automatically have the m2005, as1968 or better approval stickers/stampings.

hypo-vw ·

who is camping at WSID on friday night ?
TEAM WPVW will be there with a bbq and light refreshments

vw54 ·

YEP VVDS will be ther around 6 or so with BBQ steaks n drinks for the night

NO pizza 4 us

Dak-A-Tak ·

If gate is lock at 8.00 and pizza starts at 7.00 , 1hour to eat and talk and drive back isn't very long .
Craig what is the plan ?
I have had people ask me this , Told them to ring you .

hypo-vw ·

with most of the WPVW cars nearly ready for saturday , it is all hands on deck with my son Deans 69' beetle . Just a few days ago it developed a noise in the transmission that resembled a chocolate wheel at a chook raffle ......
We pulled the engine and tranny from his bug , stripped the tranny to find nearly every tooth on the pinion cracked and several chipped .
The crownwheel & pinion have been replaced and the tranny reassembled yesterday / last night . Today Dean assembled the axle assemblies , brakes etc and the tranny has been reinstalled tonight .
With the addition to the tranny , Deans bug also received new insulated tranny strap kit to hold everything in place , a new 4-spider gear supa-diff , a new 4-puk iron disc , removal of both front & rear swaybars (which saved 9.2 kilos) and as I write this Ben Ford is assisting Dean in disassembly of the left front suspension assembly to locate a problem that is causing excessive movement in the LH lower trailing arm .

VWMA Editor ·

Sorry, no control over the gates at Sydney - they're locked at 8pm. This does exclude those staying at the track from the Pizza night, but the gate times and conditions were outlined early in the piece.

hypo-vw ·

Deans beetle on the hoist tonight getting the rebuilt tranny installed

hypo-vw ·

well I didn't have time to take any pics over the last hour while Ben , Dean & me stripped his front beam , replaced both lower outer front beam bearings with new genuine VW Germany ones , replaced both lower trailing arms & fitted 2 new lower balljoints .
Deans front end is now all back together and he will have to do a wheel alignment tomorrow as I am buggered and about to head home for the night .

Dak-A-Tak ·

Graig H , So what happen about Helmet codes ?
I know Andra tech cars should have but slower entrys are in what code area ?
Andra or WSiD

Gate will probably be open a fair bit later. The Board is having a meeting regarding the costs of the track and what it will take to survive on Friday night, starting at 7:30pm.

Hi All,

An incredible day of VW drag racing - that pretty much says it all. Congratulations to drivers, crew and spectators for putting on a great show and confirming that VW drag racing is a vibrant part of the Australian drag racing scene.

My thanks to goes to Mick Motors for their ongoing backing of the series, Rod Penrose Performance, Volkswagen Genuine Parts, Westside Mufflers, Yokohama, Wayne Penrose Volkswagen, EuroAutomotive, Harding Performance, and Das Resto Parts for their support, Ray Treasure, Joseph Rodriquez, Matthew Sherwood and the Sydney Dragway for their efforts and encouragement, and to my VWMA crew over the four days of traveling and running the show - Grahame Rumballe, Aaron Roberts, Ian & Christine Dalgliesh, Jessica Miller and Christopher McGaughey. Also to Andrew Parish for the trophy design, Darren and Shane Hobson for the unique Top VW Shootout commemorative number plates (if you left before getting yours please email me) and Ian and Rose Merrett for the RT prize money.

The programme for the day ran well, and now that I have a better understanding of the facility and the procedures, I can modify any future events at Sydney to streamline scutineering, introduce a bit more qualifying time, and sort a few minor competition glitches. There was also a lack of time to run the RC racing, but that will be addressed and definitely included next year, as well as greater promotion of the evening entertainment. Overall, though, I couldn't have hoped for a better racing outcome.

Personally, I did get to play, which gave me a chance to put the helmet on and drown out the routine of running the event, if only for a short time. The Fvee with a Weber DCNF 40 ran a best of 13.7@106mph over one run, and then I jumped into the buggy for two rounds of competition. Aaron Roberts and I spent the better part of a month sorting what will become a nice little drag car. Handling issues aside (wheelstanding 1st and 2nd with attitude!) Aaron managed a flat 12 second pass in the last round. Once we get on top of the suspension and steering, the normally aspirated 2332cc in a 580 kg with driver frame should post high 11s!

A full report with results, images, pizza night coverage, show'n'shine, etc will be in the May issue of VWMA, the magazine that makes this all possible.

VW Warwick is on the weekend of September 29-30th. As Sydney now leads the way with entrants (94), Warwick will be pulling out all stops to take back the crown.

See you on the track!

Cheers
Craig Hughes
