reub ·

wasn't that on ebay a while back

NTsuperbug ·

Not sure where it was back then, only brought to my attention last week....... How you going up there any way Reub

hellbugged ·

Looks like a goer .....so tell us more.....what engine, gearbox?

your intentions on what you'll do with it

BrisDubba ·

Yep I was kicking myself didnt buy it, 2.5K with buy it now of 3 from memory. Subie engine etc.. Looks like it is heading a long way off where I wont be tempted.

matberry ·

Looks interesting.

Where you going to play with it, Bris or Darwin?

What's with the corner of the drivers door?

NTsuperbug ·

Hey all was more then that to buy haha, EJ20 engine, unknown box (Need to figure out), rack and pinion steering, ford wheels brakes front and rear, wishbone suspension.

Plan on circuit, hill climb and occasionally the strip for a laugh. I just need to find out what class I need to be in here in QLD.

Will take more photos tomorrow of the rest of the car.

NTsuperbug ·

I am not sure why they have done that to the drivers door the corner is solid with body. All panels are fiberglass

Sides ·

Yeah, I remember a mate of mine telling me about this one up for sal... somewhere out near Ipswich from memory ??? Definitely looked the goods in the pics, and a few "thinking outside the box' things too

Fiberglass panels and different manufacturer engine means Sports Sedan - easy peasy. Good class to run as far as Hillclimb's - you're allowed to run slicks if you want !!!

👍

Driver's door corner... perhaps a way of the letting the door open by clearing the trailer mudgaurd ???

Also, got an idea the box in it might have been 1600 Kombi ???

JVLRacing ·

very interesting......😎

fullnoise ·

I agree with JVL.

Good score. It looks like a serious racer.

Let us know how much it weighs.

JVLRacing ·

theres some work that has gone into this!......

NTsuperbug ·

I am new to this and would really appreciate any help about getting into racing etc..... I live in Brisbane so if any one knows what I should be doing or who to contact etc that would really be of help I am looking at the following....

Circuit Racing, Sprints etc
Hill Climbs

vassy66T1 ·

The MG car club at Mt Cotton are a great bunch of guys and they own and run the hillclimb track in Brisbane.
Dave Sidery (sides) can give some more insight as he has been at it for a few years.

TheMiniMan ·

Ifg you want to run on some bitumen circuits to start with then you can run with AASA group,,, that way You can virtually set it up how you want for now,

Get onto the people from Queensland Raceway & ask when you can get it out to lakeside raceway & QR on their practice meetings & see how it goes

You can also get into the IWMAC (ipswich West Moreton Auto Club) & play on the dirt autocross tracks to start , if you like

or maybe MG car club (as suggested earlier) for the MT Cotton Hillclimb track, or even the Historic racing car club,,,
they run both Mt Cootha Hillclimb & Nossa Hillclimb
there are plenty of avenues but basically it`s a "Safety first" thing & best to get it looked at by a CAMS scrutineer (maybe) & see what they say first
then go from there,
if you need/want some help my ph number is 0407 135 656
cheers
Matt

Sides ·

Yeah, totally agree with Marcus - altho I'm not a member of MG, they're a great bunch and I've always had good experiences with them.

Have sent you a PM with my phone number and whatnot - happy to talk whenever and help you get the hang of the ropes !!!

👍

JVLRacing ·

some good advice above....if it has cams book/labels anywhere should be ok.....just join a good club....bascially u will be ready togo with club advice

bigrudi ·

Class will be under 2ltr sport sedan 4b looks like a weapon cheers Rudi

lou0060 ·

Great another Brissy track vw. I just finished mine and have done a bit more work on it since its debut at Warwrick drags. I am going down the AASA route as suggested by Matt and have also just joined the HRCC and VWDCQ so I can also get my S2 license .

This sunday the watercooled guys are having a breakfast and 1/2 test at Lakeside and I am actually taking my car to run on the track for the first time. Also plan to let the scrutineers go over it as well as they are having their sprint series as well on Sunday. 7.30 start.

I think they still have one or two spots left but even if you don't run it it is probably worth going for a look and having a talk to the guys at the track.

Maybe we should try and get all the Brisbane vw racers together to share ideas and info??

NTsuperbug ·

Just need to get it on the track lou0060 ha. I have never had anything to do with Subaru engines before so all is new to me. I have done a bit of engine mapping before and now have the stinger EMS 4424 program for the beetle.... Just need to get cable and track time....

Sides ·

lou0060 wrote:Also plan to let the scrutineers go over it as well as they are having their sprint series as well on Sunday. 7.30 start.
They're doing scruit now before you can run at Lakeside ??? If so that's new, but definitely a good thing - all they used to do was check for noise levels.

AASA is used by most permanent tracks, while most club events run under CAMS. Generally CAMS requirements are more detailed and strict, both for safety and for keeping it sporting fair... AASA is bit more about getting out and having a go without taking crazy risks.

If your car passes CAMS will be fine for AASA too, but not necessarily true the other way around...

NTsuperbug ·

Went to plug in the laptop to the EMS module to see what mapping had been done for it........... then did I realise I had a Male to Male PCI cable..... will have to wait till tomorrow to see!

lou0060 ·

Lakeside yesterday was fun. Unfortunately one of my turbo hoses had come off and so I was only getting 4100 rpm before it was missing. By the time we worked it out the 1/2 session was over. Still it was a good first run for the car.

I had the head scrutineer Trevor check the car and he said it was okay for the TOP GEar series so I was happy with that.

NT, is your EJ20 NA? Also I gather it is running aftermarket ECU, hence the Stinger box. Also running a rear mount raditor, jeez I copped some slack about that on the non-vw engine forum but it seemed to run okay yesterday albeit at lower revs than I would have hoped. It will be good to comapre notes with you once you get it on track.

NTsuperbug ·

Hey mate I went down to Lakeside as well (Didnt take the car with me didnt know who to talk to down there) Only got there round 1230 so just watched some sprints.

Mine is a EJ20 N/A... not what sure what has been done to it. I need to find somewhere with a dyno and can tune EMS.... For now a change of Plugs, Leads, Fuel and Oil Filters, and some new oil should have her running a little better (been sitting for a while before I bought it.

I am unsure of how Lakeside works with racing or what I can compete in. I was able to have a play with it (Uncle has long, wide bitumen driveway haha) went hard but was breaking down a little in the high rev range under load. I later found a fuel leak in one of the regulators which would starve it.... plus I am sure the stale fuel wouldn't of helped.

NTsuperbug ·

Has any one have any info on this car????? Any pics etc previous owners the person who built it? Would be good to learn more about it.

lou0060 ·

hi NT, pity we didn't hook up on Sunday. I stayed to watch the sprints as well and took the opportunity to move my car to the outside of the track at around 12.30 as you are not allowed to run trailers thru the tunnel.

I'll pm you my phone number and we'll see if we can get together sometime. I have most of the info needed to get started with the sprints and also Top Gear and am plannin gto go to Morgan Park in Feb with the HRCC.

Jak Rizzo ·

This car is just begging for a WRX engine. I'd reccomend getting that pod filter out of the engine bay away from the hot air coming off the radiator.

Jak

NTsuperbug ·

Thanks for the tip I might fabricate a box and have a intake all to itself..... After buying the car I now have to get it on the track before I can spend lump sump money on it but I agree.

Jak Rizzo ·

I boxed mine in on the right hand side with an air intake in the guard, this way it doesn't get any but from outside the engine bay.
Made quite a difference in my intake temps too.

Jak

NTsuperbug ·

Thanks Jak for the Idea looks like a very tidy engine bay..... I have the long task of starting the collection of Subaru parts ahead of me. I have no experience with them which is testing me in identifying my engine.... engine number didn't come up on Google..... I think from memory all that was there is the number 823382... no prefix I will double check those numbers.

NTsuperbug ·

Does anyone know how to tell the difference between BL-BP and GC-GF?

EJ204 DOHC naturally aspirated AVCS
Legacy JDM BL - BP series
2003-2009 190 hp (140 kW)
Impreza JDM GC - GF series
1993-1999 155 hp (116 kW)

1916baja ·

I nearly bought this car when it was on ebay ages ago, it looked like a damn good option as i was about to start a build of my own! It looked like it had alot of work done to it... good luck 👍

lou0060 ·

hi Bud, any more progress on the car?

NTsuperbug ·

Hey Lou,

Dropped the engine out two days ago to really get to know this thing, Pressure plate had more hot spots than Hawaii and it just needed a general tidy up. Dropped all the oil, fuel and water all to be replaced. Picked up the new oil filter oil and coolant today so just need to come see you so I can get a tool that puts it all together ha.

I get my other new clutch back on Tuesday and will get it all back together by Wednesday........ Thursday morning I fly out to Hawaii for 10 days so no racing till I get back on the 26th...

As soon as I get back I am back into it. On another note I have to sell my other 72 superbug when I get back as well. How did you go with your engine drop?

NTsuperbug ·

I decided today whilst I wait for the clutch and Thursday to come around that I would rub back both beetles and paint them bright white....... I can't shift the car as I don't have a car trailer so I did the next best thing..... got out the paint, I have only done the wings for the beetle I am selling and then it was getting around dinner time and I didn't want to be spraying at that time just in case any of the neighbors could smell it. So the moral of the story is it is going to be white............

NTsuperbug wrote:Has any one have any info on this car????? Any pics etc previous owners the person who built it? Would be good to learn more about it.
Hi the car came from out near Ipswich and it was on ebay as someone has already said it was buy it now for $3000 and there was no bids I had arranged to do a swap for the car even to the piont of arranging to met half way between Sydney and Qld to do the swap but the day before he pulled out as he got a better cash offer. Not sure who you brought it off but the guy I was dealing with said he built the car and they had been trying to sort out issues they were having with the suspenion as it had been modified a fair bit. I had never seen the car in person but was going to do the swap anyway.
Any shots of the suspenion mods would be appreciated. Lots of luck with it.

NTsuperbug ·

Thanks vdubrod, sorry it took so long to post I just got back from Hawaii last night.... gee there are some nice vw's over there.. I will take some photos pm me your email to send them to you.

Really Appreciate the info.

Bud

vdubrod ·

I Had a look and I found the phone number of the guy that I was going to do the swap with it may help you to get some history on the car.

Jeff

NTsuperbug ·

Mate that would be great! If you could PM me that number would be appreciated a lot..... hopefully they still have it connected. I am about to upload some pics of how she is looking now.

Bud

NTsuperbug ·

[/img][/img][/img][/img]

NTsuperbug ·

It is nearly ready for sunday..... Just hosed it off before the photos.

Just small things left to do ie: Tyre Pressure, checking hose clamps, putting the rest of the fender bolts in (As per pics they were just sitting on there with a couple bolts for paint)

NTsuperbug ·

Can anyone tell me where I can get more plastics for the windscreen windows etc, mine are getting a little old and worn out. Thanks

Jak Rizzo ·

Are u coming down to Wakefield Park for the vw nationals supersprint on the 26th of May.

Would be great if u could make it. I think Louie is coming too.

Jak

hypo-vw ·

well done so far NTsuperbug , looks to me like you should have heaps of fun in this car . Looks the goods and cant wait to hear how it runs 😎

NTsuperbug ·

Thank you a lot of 0430 starts in the morning with midnight bedtimes..... Still a long way to considering I havent been able to get it out on the track which makes me nervous of any mechanical problems/setup etc will take time to rid of the bugs.

I think my wife has put wakefield on the calendar (Hopefully that means she has approved of it ha) will be fun fingers crossed nothing too major has happened between now and then. Getting hold of car trailer is the hardest thing at the moment and I need to find a new clutch and pressure plate this one will last only a few meets.

Cheers

Bud

RRR very nice bud....goodluck at lakeside...great little track and its been re surfaced as well....
Wat plastics ur looking for mate?

NTsuperbug ·

Hey mate got your text before sorry for not getting back to you..... I am unsure of the rules I dont think you are allowed Perspex but I am unfamiliar with materials used in general so any advice or suggestions?

Cheers Bud

Sides ·

Looks good in the all white I reckon Bud !!!

👍

For windows the stuff you want is Lexan (aka polycarbonate) and altho there's a place in Morningside that can supply am stuffed if can remember their name.

They're in an industrial complex that fronts onto both Lytton and Junction Rd - should be able to google using that (which doesn't work here in China)

😉

Sides ·

Heh - also just twigged... not turned a wheel yet, and already got sponsorship stickers !!!

😀

Also chuck a blue rectangle sticker on bonnet marking where the battery is... CAMS scruit's bound to ping you on that one, even tho have a clearly marked kill switch...

matberry ·

Lexan is polycarbonate, Perspex is acrylic.....just to clear that up Sides.......use Lexan not Perspex for windows

Car is looking great. 👍 👍

Sides ·

Doh ! Thanks for picking me up on that Matt - have now edited by original post.

👍

NTsuperbug ·

Thanks a lot guys... yeah the sponsorship really came in handy with the coin side of things........ sales pitch went something like this....... people and cameras only watch 3 people, the person in front.... the person at the rear and the person that crashes and I think that I have two out of three covered!

I wasn't sure about the battery sticker as the battery is directly under the isolation switch where the triangle is, so wasn't sure weather I needed to put another one?

I will try and google that business hope all is well in china

Bud

NTsuperbug ·

Started the engine tear down and will upload photos as I go....

NTsuperbug ·

[/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img][/img]

lou0060 ·

Bud, you are a machine......

not sure where you get the time. (mine still on blocks and engine not out yet!!)

Is that a crack in the case in the third photo?

I'll give you a call on Saturday and see how you are progressing. Also, I think one of my customers has just done a Forester motor. I'll ring him and see what bits he has....

matberry ·

Not the first time it's had oiling issues by the look of that sump

TheMiniMan ·

there`s a couple of good places around here for Polycarbonate, "Industrial plastics" & "Foremost Plastics"

both of them used to be quite close to me, one was on the corner of Lytton Rd & Taylor St
& the other is in the in the industrial area on the cnr of Lytton & Junction
But i can`t remember which one is which, even tho i drive past both of them probably 3 or 4 times per day, every day
:-)

Joel ·

Funny, my Subi guy who has been racing and building them for decades wants me to do the exact same thing with my sump.

Internal baffles with inward opening hinges to stop oil surge under hard cornering.

NTsuperbug ·

Thanks for the replies... coming alonng heading out this arve to do more work (splitting the case for a bit of a rebuild....) Lou, sounds good about your mate hopefully you get your engine out soon! Where do I find the time? late nights early mornings ha. I am lucky a good mate who does most of the mechanics used to work Mercedes in Germany and is one switched on guy!

It is just excess squeezed sealant in the case join which makes it look like a crack

The baffles are a good idea from research I have done in regards to cornering etc Joel.

Thank you for the info on the Polycarbonate I will do some googling of those places and call them!

Oil Issues...... I am going to put a large external oil cooler with extra long lines for more capacity as this thing only holds about 4 litres which isn't enough when driving hard.....

Will update some more pics of this arves progress soon.

Thanks again for all the good advice

NTsuperbug ·

In the not too far future I will be switching to full slicks for the track and keeping the semi slicks for hill climb, targa etc............

BrisDubba ·

Targa ?? I would have thought that car was too heavily modified to get registered, not so much the subie engine but the front end and other mods, but is that what you are intending ?

NTsuperbug ·

[/img][/img][/img][/img]

NTsuperbug ·

Hi Brisdubba, that car will not make targa car they will get put onto another one..... sooo many projects they never end ha

Jak Rizzo ·

NTsuperbug wrote:Oil Issues...... I am going to put a large external oil cooler with extra long lines for more capacity as this thing only holds about 4 litres which isn't enough when driving hard.....
In my experience that is totally unnecessary. On a 35d day after 15 minutes around Eastern creek flat chat I can only get my oil temp to 90d max. i made my own shortened sump that holds 6 litres of oil rather than the factory 4.5litres. External coolers only leads to more things that can go wrong on the track, also, don't use super thin oil I use 15/60 Penrite.
Hope this helps
jak

Jak Rizzo ·

.

NTsuperbug ·

Thanks mate for the pics...... we figured out that the sump I have can and will hold around the 7 litre mark just the dipstick wasn't modified to suit the sump....

The new ACL bearings ordered and will be here on Friday along with the Gaskets so will be putting back together on the weekend....

NTsuperbug ·

[/img][/img][/img]

NTsuperbug ·

Was putting back the rotating assembly together when a Rod bolt stretched and snapped........ Picking up new ones tomorrow morning. Case back together oil pump on pistons in (Except number three as I need access through the bore to put the rod bolts in.... ) Should have it back together over the next couple nights.

lou0060 ·

good work Bud. Lakeside sprints approaching fast!!

I've got my motor back in now and just working on the air intake. will post some pics on my thread soon.

I've got your hose clamps as well. Have you moved yet? might try and call in over Easter and check progress...

NTsuperbug ·

At last found the problem of part numbers not matching up! The rods are EJ22 grrrr back on track now

lou0060 ·

Hi Bud, new target date: lakeside general practice May 12th and then the biggy Wakefield May 26th.....

DylanTheDubber ·

The Cars coming along well. Looking good in white with sponsor decals. Good to see the Aboriginal flags next to your name too. I am aboriginal dubber aswell, i have a flatt black Superbug that im building for street/track orientated and i was thinking of having flags next to my name for racing too. Do you live in NT or Brisbane?

From Dylan

NTsuperbug ·

Those targets seem achievable haha.....

Hi Dylan, I am originally from Katherine NT but now live near Dayboro (Brisbane) where abouts are you from? The flags definitely turn heads too soon to tell what reaction it creates.

DylanTheDubber ·

Okay Cool mate,

My Mob is from Northern Rivers "Randall Family" we are a big family most still live in Northern Rivers others have spread up to Gold Coast and Brisbane. When are you planing on the car having it's first run around a track?

From Dylan

NTsuperbug ·

I had it out about 5 weeks ago at Lakeside and did the big end bearing in so she is now rebuilt and should have it out again soon!

lou0060 ·

hey Bud, got it ready yet? how you looking for Wakefield?

NTsuperbug ·

Finally overcoming a huge list of problems! A lot of engine dramas then problems with sump then brakes, suspension steering the list goes on but I have fixed those dramas and now ready to get out on the track!

lou0060 ·

good to hear Bud. Put down August 18th as I think that is the next LS sprint day.

lou0060 ·

Bud, any progress? LS this weekend.....
