Australia day overblown?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/95015/australia-day-overblown

annosL ·

Sometimes the hype of Australia day seems overblown to me as it really relates to NSW colonisation rather than Australia becoming a nation of federated states "Australia" in 1901. Dutch sailors visited the west coast over a hundred years before Capt.Cook so Jan.26th is not a big deal. It seems to me the convict fleets setting up a British penal colony in NSW isn't when the Nation Australia came into being, that happened in 1901, maybe I am showing my one-eyed W.A. colours but from thousands of kilometres away westward from Sydney it all seems Sydney-centric! (I appologise if I upset some!)
One things for sure, Vee-dubs hold no boundaries, every country on earth seems to have had their air-cooled lot, even Antarctica

We were discussing this in the car today with the 12 year old.

In short I think the intention is that it celebrates the beginning of 'modern Australia'. It wasn't the discovery of the country, it wasn't the first inhabitants, it wasn't federation but it certainly was the start of everything that is around us today. Given that federation occurred on the new year, perhaps it was just that we wanted an extra holiday! The fact that it happened in Sydney doesn't change the fact that it began the whole country as we know it. The media and the harbour obviously help focus coverage on Sydney, but that's just life.

The country we live in is fabulous and we should celebrate the wonderful things about it, but as in almost all stories there are winners and losers, and in this case the losers were the Aboriginals, who were conquered, not in your normal theatre of war, but by gradual removal of their land and way of life and also through disease. Obviously historically there were a lot of wrongs done to them, and we as a society continue to live with the consequences today.

As Joel notes, the concern is what is being celebrated and whether it is being hijacked. After all, unless you're an Aborigine you're essentially an immigrant, so the things that we should celebrate should be things like our (generally favourable) climate, our natural resources, our wealth, our system of goverment (no matter how flawed still much better than most), the freedoms we take for granted that most don't have and the relative lack of class structure which is still a major inhibitor of people's ability to lift themselves out of the mire in other countries.

So we have lots to be grateful for, and the 26th is as good a day as any, but Australia should be a place of inclusiveness, and if people want to use it to push an "us and them" agenda, then they are idiots and are probably blind to their own background, and the backgrounds of people they know.

I mostly agree Craig but I think that, although federation occurred on Jan 1 1901 (an awkward date for an Australia day public holiday), the first meeting of an Australian parliament didn't occur until the 9th of May 1901. It was really only then that the colonies became a nation and as such should be our national day. Think about it, with the amount of bitching going on between them at the time, despite the declaration of federation, if some of them decided to not turn up to that first meeting, things could be radically different today.

I reckon that's a perfect time of year to slot one in and it takes the emphasis away from the whole "discovery/invasion" aspect.

Regards,

Matt.

annosL ·

Good point Matt, you put it better than me, all states have their "colonisation" day, in W.A. it is Foundation day, 4th June, when W.A. was proclaimed as the Swan river colony in 1829 and we have a holiday now for it but W.A. was settled before that in Albany in 1826 as an outpost of N.S.W. and a penal colony to boot but there is no holiday celebrated for that day. I wholeheartedly agree with Craig and others and the day is needed to give thanks for how lucky we are etc but think maybe it is the wrong day to have it on one states colony day, 9th May sounds good to me! I feel we need to do a lot more to alleviate the damage caused to Aboriginal Australian culture since europeans came and get their life expectancy a lot higher.
Hope you all had a great day anyhow, I did with my family and am grateful to be living in Aussie! (driving a bug)

I agree completely, it's shit like that that keeps me inside on Australia day and off the roads.

Too many dickheads drinking and driving, hooning along in their commodores with Australian flags hanging off the windows.

Even when I was working on Zelda out on the street, some idiot in a Holden Ute with this massive f*$k off flag hanging off the back was drifting around corners.

Some people just see it as a massive piss up, and I guess that is what Australian's from the Y-generation do these days. Everyday for them is a piss up and it annoys me greatly...

I'm one of the very few 17 year olds that can actually say they don't touch alcohol. But I know for a fact that some of my mates who are quite bogan live on the stuff. I worry every weekend that I won't hear from one of them on Monday due to something fatal happening on our roads.

Getting off topic, but yeah. I agree with AA003, yesterday is just a day where everyone can be as bogan as they want and not get into trouble. Fun for everyone, right? 👎

donn ·

Yesterday was a great day for me, friends and fanily around a few red drinks, a few amber sangers and lots of laughs and good food on the barbie, oh, and telling lots of lies that we all accepted as gospell truth. The one thing I noticed was the almost total acceptance of the last bit of the Australia Day adds, "the best bit is we can get up and do it all tomorrow". Just because there are a few (yes, by far the minority) "bogans" out there carrying on like idiots dosn't mean we cant be proud of this great land and celebrate our good fortune to be living here.
While on a recent drive in the wench a fella comented on my Australian flag I was flying off the back, telling me that he used to have two hanging off his caravan but his son told him to take them off as it wasn't Australia Day, so off they came, I told him to give his son the nessage that it's Australia Day every day. Fly the flag.
Here endeth the lesson.
👍👍👍

SebastienPeek ·

Donn,
I agree that everyone can have a good time and do whatever they want, but just be careful. Obviously everyone would have had a good day yesterday, I know I did, I got Zelda one step closer to being back on the road and that to me is as exciting as it gets. You're right, bogans are the minority and most people just stay at home with friends and family and have a barbecue, I have nothing against that whatsoever (I did this myself), it's just those that act like idiots out on the streets.

Take what happened last year at Glenelg (I think it was last year), there was this massive piss up and a couple of my friend's actually had to have their stomaches pumped and all sorts.
All I'm saying is there is fun, and then there is taking it way too far.

But I agree with you, every day is Australia Day and if you're flying the flag every day, then by all means fly it. I have no problem with people hanging flags off their cars, it's just some of the idiots that do it that take it way too far. They are, however, the minority in Australia, but here in Adelaide, they're a bigger number...

Joel ·

Yep, it's just that younger generation of bogans trying be all patriotic with their "Australia, f**k off we're full" attitude that are ruining it.

Crap, we are the best nation by a long way!!!!

My family originated as economic refugees (boat people) running from the oppression of a ruthless immoral nation, as are some of the current boat people we all seem to love to bag, it just so happened that it was 1835 from Ireland and the oppressors were the English. We are a nation made up of all the people on earth, why is the union jack in the corner of our flag anyway? (rhetorical question) It seems to generate an exclusive attitude why not replace it with the aboriginal flag as an acknowledgement of our true heritage and may stimulate a bit of self esteem in that community which is desperately needed. If people think being here for a couple of generations gives them the right to tell others were to go I know were I want to send them.
Sorry, ignorant, selfish, racist, redneck fools piss me off
I have blond hair blue eyes and white skin and have been told to go back to were I came from by indigenous people who are racist just like the rest of us.

donn ·

Bloody hell Smiley, that flag's even bigger than mine, so size does count ! 😀

DylanTheDubber ·

I Agree with Matt Ryan,

Australia day should have a different date and a different meaning behind it. Many people "discovered" Australia before Captain Cook and his Mob did so it should'nt be based on the date of federation or settlement of the british. That brings up too much from the past and brings up alot of hurt and sad times for the Indigenous Australians that ancestors were treated very wrong but also for the decendants of the convicts braught on the first fleets that was treated very wrong.

I Think Australia day needs to be a celebration for the country we live in and all our country is today. and all the people that live in it, no matter what there heritage or backround of the Australian. Our Whole country has come such a long way from were it was, and we need to celebrate that we have came along way and not keep focusing on how or who did it cause many people... many many people and races of people made this country not just Cook and he's mob.

Especially this version

The Australia day date is the date that our community first settled on Australian soil and started moving towards the way of live we now know, which includes taking the existing aboriginal inhabitants with us (not that they had much say in it, unfortunately).

Not trying to be picky Dylan, but it is not the date that Captain Cook discovered Australia, but the date that Govenor Arther Phillip landed with the first fleet.

DylanTheDubber ·

Agreed Jon,

And the term "Racist" is blown way out of propotion these days everyone is so politically correct that they cant even say the blacks and the whites or the lebonese and the Aboriginies in a tottaly non racist way but people jump to the gun of "your a racist" I Welcome you into My Country and i wish you the best to your life here. crikey, when I started this thread I was questioning whether Australia day is on the appropriate date and from the diversity of posts it appears we all have varying views but their is a strong theme of support for Australia day and so maybe the date is not so important as the celebration itself for our nation, (boguns aside) What is a bit surprising, considering the diversity of views, ages and political persuasions is our common love of air-cooled volkswagens! Thats not bad I reckon

Hutcho,
Im not sure what your trying to say?
I was saying to the person who posted above saying they are immigrants and they have moved here and loving it here. About the "indigenous" thing you were saying im not sure what your trying to say. My Grandfather was Aboriginal of the Lower Clarence River and he was decent of an african prisioner that came on the first fleet. So even though i am "indigenous" i have no hate or anger towards the first fleet coming because i wouldnt be here if they never came. Australia day for me is being proud of who i am as an indigenous Australian and just to be proud of the country i live in.

Old Hutcho ·

OK Dylan, perhaps if I read the thread a little more closely I would have picked that up. I apologise to you and yes Donn he is a credit to himself and his people.

My thought, for what it was worth, is that I have in my occupation a number of aboriginal people (not many but a good number) in m y face from time to time insisting I am walking on their land. I have an issue with that and maybe its a little too close to the surface.

regards

DylanTheDubber ·

Hutcho,

Yes there are alot of Aboriginal people that have that bad attitude and say those kinds of things. It is only hate and anger passed down from generation to generation. although I and alot of other Indigenous Australians can move on and forget about the past and be greatfull that the Government cares about our Mob now and dose alot to help us. they Pay for alot of stuff for us to give us a decent life even if we dont have the money, the government gives us the opitunities we cant make happen. It is Shame to our people and our communitie when groups of Indigenous Australians do outrageous acts like burning the aussie flag and so called "attaching" the prime minister. I tell people that I'm English by birth but Australian by choice. That the flag is racist makes me laugh as the Union Jack (Flag - call it what you like) itself represents the union of three seperate nations, the English, Scottish and Irish - Wales is a principality so therefore was never a kingdom (not 100% sure the difference?). Nope I am now Australian and celebrate Australia Day the same as all my friends and the flag has been the same long before I ever came here and it should never change, you can't change history by changeing the flag although the flag was different 200 years ago (no flag of St Patrick on it then) and I think it would be terribly disrespectful by anyone to even want to change it when you think of all the people who have died for it and what it represents.

AA003 ·

It's already changed once.

donn ·

It's actualy changed more than once though only in very slight ways, can't recall the exact changes but I kinda remember from school days (yes I did go to school but it was in an old bark humpy out the back of Wheelabaraback) that one was the addition of an extra point to the large star under the union Jack (federation star ?) to represent onother state or something, I kinda remember that it was something to do with Papua New Guinea..
