well, I guess it's time to start a new thread for the next build. This is the keeper and will be given plenty of time for a lot of lovin...😂
Just arrived tonite and is resting up .
I'm giddy!!!! 🤓
grinderman ·
YES, another dual cab build ! More the better..........so whats planned for this beast?

I know, crazy isn't it!! 😂 .. just went outside with a coffee and looked at it to take it all in, I think I need another coffee.
🤪
>EDIT<
I know they are not VW's but here are some of my Uncles projects, he was a former BMW technician and now retired and doing what he really loves..... the van will be mine one day, (I wish) 😂
enjoy

grinderman wrote:YES, another dual cab build ! More the better..........so whats planned for this beast?
I think it will be very similar to my SC build, but Matt has opened up my color scheme eyes a bit and may go with a nice gloss dark grey with some nice matt black rims.
I like the luxury of power windows , central locking and the VS short shifter is soooooo smooth that those items are in the build. I think I'm going to glass up a rooftop console with drop down screen n such for my lil terrors to keep amused on long drives 🙂
The cabs are so big in these things I need to place some nice vanity lights in the rear somewhere...
I'm sure lots of things will change in the build and this is more of a year long project I think.....
tar76 ·
I'm excited 😀😀!!
Handy ·
I love the DC, you got a very nice project there, I will follow this tread.
One day I will have my own DC, its a dream. Power windows, new modern interior, subaru engine, air condition, etc..
max autos ·
allways good to see another DC on the road
TheMiniMan ·
hee hee,,, yep glad you got a DC Ian,,, we can do Dueling duel-cab shuttles :-)
binner ·
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ yo matt, have you got an original door panel I could get a template of on your DC, the main one is the crew door and maybe a pic of the interior and how it is arranged...as in door handle position and such............
or maybe i could swing by and check out the crew cab side of things and we could have a nice tall glass of lemonade or water........... 😂
chhers old man
BrisDubba ·
If you are chasing a rear door for the DC - am pretty sure that BJ still has one for sale:
I havent seen it but from memory he was saying that it was good.
Cheers
Peter
Hey Peter, thanks for the "heads up" I was more after what they look like finished inside, as in the door card and such.
I was looking for a front drivers door though so will pm BJ about the ones he has for sale....
cheers Ian
BrisDubba ·
No probs, I will take a photo of mine tomorrow if you like - mine is standard with the basketweave door card.
binner ·
^^^^^^^^ that would be tops Peter!
just trying to get my head around DC's
BrisDubba ·
Hadnt forgotten, just misplaced the camera cord to download the photo..
binner ·
^^^thanks chief, such a daunting project. single cabs are a lot easier I think.......these Dc's look really big and a lot of body work.
TheMiniMan ·
Hey ian, sorry i was a bit slow to respond to this, but you`re more than welcome to have a gork & copy templates & such man
anytime, just let me know when you`re ready
my DC is at Ferny hills atm getting a fresh-ish interior make-over so whenever you`re ready young fella :-)
binner ·
^^^^^^ no worries Matt, and yeah I'll give you a yell when i need to look at how things work in the DC.......
sooooo, finally today I started to do some work, decided it was easier to buy new than to try and knock out the dents and such in the original....
human skin over exoskeleton ..... 😂
StenGuns ·
Late Type 2 skin needs a bit of modifying to get the 68-72 Look.... Hope you kept your old front..
Good luck with the build.. I had a 71DC for yonks and it was a top truck
binner ·
^^^yup kept the old, and yes fitting is a bit of a pain, gotta cut out the indicator locators, gotta plate up the hi indicator holes, I'm not really keen on the VW emblem raised part but mehhh. I got plenty of time on this build so it's going to be a loooong thread 😂
TheMiniMan ·
yeah it just don`t look right with that raised bit in the center
tar76 ·
Long thread, excellent!! I can see a lot of Saturady nights with beer in hand following this build. I'll be your cyber cheer squad 😀
Given that I am at this stage and doing the same thing to my front - more piccies - I am only averaging about an hour a week on mine so you will be ahead of me.
That raised badge section is annoying, but will have to go.
Peter

I am contemplating cutting it out and welding in the original piece from old skin.
Or maybe cut it out and smash in a huge roo shootin spotlight for those pig/roo huntin expeditions
this is my daughter at it......what a girl!!!
Hey MATT (mad matt) .....any chance you can swoon a deal with the girl and grab 2 of those SAAS seats for me at yr special price?.... Decided to go with 2 single seats and a step thru to the rear.
zap zap👍
max autos ·
good luck with that im sure alll that work will be worth it in the end. great to see another d/cab making it back
was that one Al had for sale ???
Klaus ·
seen the walk thru on dc's , look like arse and massive devalue of a lowlight and will need engineers cert , your bus , just keep the bit u cut out 🙂
binner ·
max autos wrote:good luck with that im sure alll that work will be worth it in the end. great to see another d/cab making it back

yup , it was Al's.
BrisDubba ·
I disagree with the devaluing - I have had DC's with both seating arrangements and I far more prefer the walk through set up - particularly with family and pets. My current DC is original with perfect seats etc so I wont be modifying it but if I had a blank canvas then I would certainly entertain the idea.
Get into it son..
I dont know if you have seating in mind but I was looking at full leather interior out of 850 Volvo - you can pick them up cheap and modify accordingly and they are a very comfortable seats whilst maintaining an original look.
Klaus ·
late bay ..choppy choppy ..lowlight not too keen on the idea
TheMiniMan ·
Ian,,, mine were the last 2 she had,,, i can ask if she`ll order in another 2 for us tho , no harm in trying hey?
i`ve cut the wall out from in-between the front & rear cab-sections & just made it way lower,.,,, that way i can recline my nice new seats & relax when i`m at main beach in Byron after a surf & breaky :-)
the I`ve also got myself (comming this arvo hopfully) a rear side door that i`ll fit into the drivers side rear of the car so i can get at the spares & tools & water & crap stored on that side under my dog-box,,,
i`m also going to fit 2x swing-out side-panels for access to the battery boxes...
Ian,,, never forget that it`s your car,,, no one elses... you can do what you want with it :-)
if you want to de-value it, then you go ahead & de-value it all you want :-)
If you want to make it more "user-friendly & comfortable" then you just go ahead & do exactly that :-)
binner ·
^^^^^^^^where r your batt boxes?... are you running a dual battery set up? . I'm trying to make this a semi camper/family friendly ute with all the mod cons, eg rear reading lights,dvd/ps3/flat screen, courtesy lights for crew cab. Like I said, this is my keeper so the budget has been raised (with approval from the boss 😂 )
Seriously going down the road of Air Con too........
That's cool about the seats..... I'll find something along the way that will suit. Have decided on 2 front seats with a nice custom centre console to hide various components/stuff.
binner ·
started to cut today. ohh my oh my................
binner ·
geebus crickey
grinderman ·
Like a kinder surprise the body will just keep on 'giving' !!👍 I'm all for building the car that suits your needs regardless of the value adding/devalueing equation. I will be trimming my divider so I can recline my seat a bit ( its a pain being tall sometimes). At least you are progressing unlike my build , work has me going 7 days at the moment.....👎
binner ·
^^^^^^^progress is very very slow, but I have managed to negotiate the next 8 Thurs off work to try and get the body work done.
BrisDubba ·
Hmmm maybe you wont be so far ahead of me afterall ...😂
I am gong for some creature comforts as well in my DC - am also contemplating EJ22 setup as I wouldnt mind using it tow the offroader on the odd occasion..
binner ·
^^^^^^ it's a race then!... 😂 I am hoping to have it on the road for Xmas camping. Once the rust is cut and welding is done I'm hoping things will go smooth.... am certainly putting in a triton electric rear window in this one, got the cash put aside for that already 👍
max autos ·
i was thinking of doing that widow mod to mine aswell but it is a bit of a mission.
binner ·
^^^ ahh yes but now is the best time to do it when it's a shell and i got the time frame to do it in....😁
max autos ·
well if u do it make sure i doco it so i know what to do !
binner ·
thought I would start on another resto, a bit smaller though 😁
binner ·
got a door prepped so thought I would start looking at colors....... I do like green.
BrisDubba ·
Damn you are at the painting stage already.... pity I can see all those other panels still missing, otherwise I would think you were ahead of me.. mine is already green.
binner ·
^^^^^^^^missing panels are the new black didn't you know... 😂
you see, I had to paint something because I'm getting nowhere with the body work as you so kindly pointed out 😂
you didn't steal my green did you?
BrisDubba ·
Nah mine is a lighter green - avacado I think ??
binner ·
geebus bloke, you are wayyy ahead of me....
I was looking at factory colors on the samba the other week and the mango green is kinda growing on me...... I want to try and get a sample pot and spray it up ..........
BrisDubba ·
Maybe... but this photo was taken before I took the whole front off and rear floor etc - which are still off and when I fix that then I have the drivers sills to do.
binner ·
...what do they mean when they state "cab door with bulge" & "non swage line"
EDIT. ... Hey Peter, any chance I could swing by and have a look at yr DC... as mine is in bits I'd like to see how some parts of the interior of the cab fit together, one thing I'm looking at is trying to reduce the depth of the rear seat but really don't know if it's possible or not plus just to look at the engine mounts and things of that nature....
binner ·
finished the cooker today...... and looking at colors....
That top right green is so close to Bris Dubbers dually... :O
binner ·
^^ that is a chrysler color from early 70's called ...wait for it
BIG BAD GREEN, never came to australia and the one below is an extra 5g of green, thats the direction I am going and doing a black underbody with silver axles/sus/hubs etc.
TheMiniMan ·
What`s happening Ian, you gone all quiet ???
binner ·
TheMiniMan wrote:What`s happening Ian, you gone all quiet ???
going slow,my heart hasn't been in it for a month or so with just work and tracking down parts for it. It's pretty daunting as I have never done a full ground up resto plus I got sidetracked with restoring this for a friend.
binner ·
ok Matt, you made me feel like a slack bastard...did some work on the DC on Fri/Sat dee.....
My evap/ac unit arrived too so now I'm sorting out where to locate it. I think it's going to go under the rear seat and I'll duct to front and rear. The color is finalised and I need a name for it as I have altered the color, any suggestions?......
the pic of it in part shade is a good indicator as to how different it is from sun/shade.
long ways to go.........

ohh and also this is another reason for not working on the DC...........
a hell of a ride.......😂

so now i`m applying for special hardship order for a work license ,
because i`m a mobile mini mechanic & it will stuff me if i don`t have a license
looks like Valla is out for me this year too :-(
binner ·
........what do you do when you offer up the front skin get it in position then you see that the skin is 10mm short either side where it is supposed to wrap around both door pillars. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. 🤪
Anyone got ideas? .. If I shave off the door pillar by 10mm so it can be wrapped around then the gap between the door and pillar grows, so I'll have like a 10/15mm gap once the doors go back on which isn't good.
>pours a sailor J and calms down

Take a pic so we can see, sounds like the panel is SUS

I did take some pics tonite but it didn't show in the bad light. I'll try again tomorrow in daylight. I'm so bummed. mehh
got a mate coming over to help me do a 2 piece hoodliner mould this weekend. I want the clean velour look.Hoping he can weave his awesome glassing/moulding skills for me....
Anyone know of a set of rear cab seats for sale. I got nothing, naddah, zilch, zero to work with.
cheers
binner ·
here are some pics fellas...........
The white chalk line is the door pillar seam to wrap around and then the black is the crease line in the skin. It's as if you need to push in the centre of the skin to ease out the curve so it clips around the pillars but I ain't about to attempt that. I dont' have magic hands 😂
arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
matberry ·
I think you answered it. Needs to manipulate the panel to get the edge to clip over. Actually looks doable but pics are like that ;P.
binner ·
matberry wrote:I think you answered it. Needs to manipulate the panel to get the edge to clip over. Actually looks doable but pics are like that ;P.
Do you want to come and manipulate? 😂😂
I will give it a red hot go this morning.....stay tuned.
EDIT< no success today, so I have had to manipulate it in other ways....there is no way of massaging a piece of metal that much I'm sorry.
wait and see if you can tell how I did it 😂
binner ·
ok so I managed to fake it. I welded 3 different gauges of wire vertically down the edge closest to the pillar. Fitted the door and got an average of the gap and also making sure it was a flush wrap around from the skin to the start of the door. Got the angle grinder and shaved the 3 pieces of wire down trying to make a freehand curve that would match up to the door and curve round to the inside of the pillar.
Once I did that I weld filled what needed then applied a few skim coats of filler to smooth it out.
4 hours later ....tahhh dahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
ohh and finally smoothed out the vertical seam join and also the panel wrap join... and yes I did reinforce the seams on the inside of the panels 😂 looks sooo clean and smooth, I love it.
binner ·
oooooh and some shots of the FAT MAT.........
matberry ·
👍👍👍
binner ·
^^^^^^^^^ getting there brother .........getting there...........
I need a floor, as in the front floor........anyone ...anyone 😁
max autos ·
hey watch out with that exposed bog as it will suck up moisture and cause rust under it or blistering after paintin
binner ·
^^^ If you mean under the wheel arch's I am already on it. I'm going to grind that off and fibreglass it instead, then hit it with underbody sealer. I welded in new sheet steel there and didn't like the finish, so in a fit of not thinking (most common reason is either working late or having a few too many sailor J's) just went along and used filler... Dohhh.
good to see you guys are keeping on top of me!!!! 🙂
still cant' find a damn complete cutout rear triton power window unit... can get all the glass, rubbers, power winder and channels for $660 but no go on a complete cut out from a wreck yet. grrrrrr
binner ·
be screwed if I ever do that front skin weld join B/S again. Maybe my fault, but the horizontal cut/join line sux ass to try and smooth out. 4th time lucky today to try and make it uniform.
matberry ·
You want us to keep an eye on you and in the same post you mention fibreglass.....dude, tell us your joking....yeah!
binner ·
^^I was going to smooth the filler back, almost to metal.. seal it, then glass it.... seal that, then coat it with underbody sealer. Whats wrong with that?
I want it to be super smooth so water can just flow and not get caught up in the recesses that were there .
matberry ·
Fibreglass is not metal, it delaminates from the metal and all will turn to SHIT
binner ·
matberry wrote:Fibreglass is not metal, it delaminates from the metal and all will turn to SHIT
Plexus bonding composite, we use it at work on projects that mix metals and glassing. It seems to work on sculptures/students works in the past.
I'll still give it a go.
FGI use to carry it but now in receivership, I'll look for the MSDS sheets at work.
binner ·
gang green
binner ·
done, well....... almost 😂
matberry ·
wow, you been busy 👍
binner ·
^^^ 8am till 5pm for the last few days ... neighbours are getting compensated due to massive compressor, dust and sanding noise for the last week.
I can safely say this is the final resto I will ever do. no more .........after this is done it's back to spending weekends riding DH.
got a mates buddy coming round to do all my A/C hose set up for a carton......whooo hoooo
now it's on to the easy stuff........ 🤪
Klaus ·
what no more welding ? or is aluminium checkerplate filling the big holes 🙂
binner ·
F*%K welding.........
I had to get paint on, I'm on a timeframe......wait and see........ 👍

ok , bog is heavy though in those amounts 😁

black builders plastic or cling wrap works well I hear. May just finish the rest off with that 😂😂 plus I like the flintstones look in the cab...... 😂
D-train ·
Forgive me if I'm an idiot, but wouldn't it be better to finish the welding an panels before paint?

I would love to come round and have a look at my old DC one day?

sure ..... you wouldn't like it though. 😂
binner ·
Horray!! ...found a rear seat in top shape for the build, I'm excited 🤓
Today was fitting all the body deadener (gotta get it in some tight areas on the doors, took ages) in all about 8 lineal mtrs was added. Finished the crew door lower sill and welded it in, I had to fabricate one at work but forgot to take photos of the bending and folding to form the profiles..🥲
Finished spraying the top half of the doors white and maybe Tues will be painting the lower halves. Al kicked me a early side window glass to use as a template to see if the crew windows are the same size, very , very close so I ordered the fixed window rubbers and will reweld the rubbers to suit. If it looks suss I'll try those popout kits Al has.I like the look of fixed windows in the cewcab so hope it works.
No photos cause it was all pretty boring work today......🙄

...I fitted the doors tonite. Yippie.
binner ·
started on the wiring loom today.......good grief man. Looks daunting when it comes out of the box but the E Z wiring kit seems pretty damn good. Once you get it all unrolled and work one section of the bus at a time its pretty cool cucumbers. I decided to wrap it in plastic flexi coil rather than heat shrink.
Such riveting pictures too, don't you think....🙂
binner ·
.........so who does machine work on cases in Brisbane? 🙂
binner ·
floor is in, rust proofed, welded, sikaflexed (2 tubes worth) undercab, finished the rear window. Gave up on power winder again (just too hard to source, find and wait.) Maybe I will regret it maybe not....
wiring is ........... guh...🤓
fu$%in spring plates are shitting me....
cat pissed on my drop cloth.....
opened up a new bottle of sailor jerry....
binner ·
smashed in the brake hard lines, gear linkage,clutch/brake assembly, clutch cable, accelerator linkage and cable. Then tonite hit up the cab with fatmat and checked out how the sub/air con and amp are going to fit. Petrol tank is cleaned cured and given a fresh coat of green 😂
giddyup........

offered up the front beam and put on the steering links.....

So, can someone elaborate........... I have green painted torsion bars for the rear and the spring plates (that came with the ute) are to large a diameter to fit the bars. I found another set of spring plates today thinking they would be correct but no, same as first.
Did torsion bars change size (spline #'s) in years or did spring plates change size (splines)?.... I'm about to lose my mind.
thanks in advance peeps....
Klaus ·
spring plates in 68-71 are shorter than 72-79 , and torsion bars are diff dia, splines and trailing arms are also diff in lowlights
binner ·
torsion splines = 48 count
spring plate length = 435mm
spring plates = 52 count
I reckon I have the wrong torsion bars, any one?
ohh and my backyard master cly bleed setup,, f@%kn eh!! 😂
thanks
matberry ·
I might have some, can you measure diameter at each end and in the middle with a vernier caliper?
binner ·
^^^^^^^
Inner = 36.2mm
Outer = 39.3mm
Mid = 28mm
length of rod is 610mm
thanks bloke
TheMiniMan ·
i might have a pair of rear stubs for you Ian,,, maybe.
i fitted the bigger diam Chrome-molly things into my DC for the Porsche CVs,
so i should have a pair of std kombi ones here somewhere
binner ·
^^^^^^awesome fella... let me know if its a goer!!
just played around with the DVD player location and wiring....sweeeeeet
binner ·
hoodliner is almost in, high as a kite and a huge headache with spray glue but it looks pretty damn good, tomoorow is just finish off trim n shite...
scored a 2ltr recon box never used since rebuild last year, guy was going to smash it in his Form V but never got around to it,

Wow - that is the greenest gearbox I have ever seen!!!
Excellent headliner job - that looks awesome!

^^^^^^ thanks fella... some better shots now its all finished, came up better than I expected but I'm not happy with the way I mounted the map lights..... ohhh well, its not concourse .
Windscreen in on Monday , dropped off the seats at trimmers, stoked with the colors and piping I decided on..can't wait to pick them up.

But sadly, that is the last of the green to go on the build.... maybe
😂

lotsa wiring and fiddly interior work the last week or so, finally got my gauges in and the wiring for the air con. Made my own gauge holder because I'm anal and wanted a specific shape and size and location. So Cal ignition switch and push starter fitted....
Parts of the engine are finally arriving by boxes and heavy freight costs 😂
Do the heads look familiar Mr Berry?... case arrives next week hopefully and SCAT order arrives tomorrow I think.
really splashing the cash..........😂
I have to order an exhaust and booster off you Mr Berry , will call you next week for costs...... 😉
matberry ·
👍👍👍🙂
binner ·
^^^ so shocked you couldn't type anything?
😀😀😀
ohh yeah , I knew there was something else I was working on, the tray is at work being "glued " together, sanded and lacquered and shaped..... It's a surprise...... 😂
binner ·
so stoked on the spotted gum tray, a lot of work but well worth it.....the VW emblem has to go off and get chromed now and the timber tray will have a chrome trim wrapped around it to finish off the edges.
Scottkombi ·
Love your work.
Any gates going on this DOKA?
Maybe some stainless framed woody ones?
binner ·
cheers fella,
no >Bill< gates just yet, may put some some nice stylish timber slat gates on in the future but gotta pull back a bit on the splash cash.
yeah, I am still saying WOW.... think I went too hard.
binner ·
..........hard lesson learnt
bought a engine kit from Scat who use DB Shenker as freight, i have just paid more for freight ,taxes, duty than the actual goods. f@#$in unreal
binner ·
.....so it's time to start on the donk and I started on my Samba ad webers that arrived about a month ago...... wow did I find some cool stuff inside .........
My friend gave me some dental cleaning stix of various sizes and they are freakin awesome to use, I will post up a pic of them tomorrow, really good for cleaning very tiny orrifices.....😂
you can see a before and after shot in the last image. Fitted with upgrade kit, jet doctors and an all over good clean out.
binner ·
...pretty much all of the engine has made it to shore and in my shed, just waiting on a freakin case to arrive. It's lost at sea so I am going to give it till Fri and if it doesn't show up will have to buy another case..... 😬
anyone got a great to brand new opened (90.5) case they want to sell??
matberry ·
mmmm new stuff 👍😁
binner ·
^^^^^yeah it was all going smooth until this
matberry ·
Bugga....two different barrel sizes !!!
binner ·
BINGO............ you are a winner. So we wait for another 1 week or so for the replacement. Yippie!!!!
edit, just working on a shim from Kimco ....will see...
matberry ·
or get DB to machine both of them, that way you can get rid of the step in the head that should be gone anyway IMO.
binner ·
it started......... today
binner ·
I have a tech question..... after building up the long block (rotates nice and smooth, no bad noises) I went to assemble the rockers and push rods. I am using standard rockers (Scat swivel feet) a C35 cam and standard lifters (all Scat), when I install my rods (Scat CroMo 11.50) then try to nip them up to the heads there is about a 12mm gap between the rocker and the seat of the cylinder head. I have made sure all the lifters are pushed inwards and rotated the engine on all TDC cylinders and they still don't fit.
I will say that I bought the full Scat engine kit , so I figured everything in the kit would be compatible but it seems the rods are too long for the rocker and cam assembly. Shouldn't it be standard length push rods ?.
thanks in advance ......... Binner
Serious85 ·
Your thread is my new inspiration... I'll have plenty of questions for you later on lol 😂
Klaus ·
does the rocker assembly bolt on with pushrods not installed ?
binner ·
^^^yup,
matberry ·
Not fixed your rocker/pushrod issues yet??? Gotta setup geometry first then pushrod length like Shayne said
binner ·
yup, thats this weekends shed time. Where are peeps preferred place to locate the fuel regulator?

Very nice!
11CAB ·
Your twincab is looking great.
I picked up a 75 Twincab, and finally have a ute to put my 11CAB plates on that I've had for over 15 years 🙂
And here's what it looked like back in the 90's
shaven ·
Mate what an awesome build. Just looked through. Credit to yo.
binner ·
thanks for the props fellas, been a bit busy now at work so it kinda took a back shelf for a month or so......
and a bearing failure on my part... yippie!!! 🙁
its really taken some cash out of my account so this is def a keeper for a while to come 😵
binner ·
so close to rego I can smell it, got all my gauges sorted, had to smash in a diode to stop TACH BOUNCE, got my cyl head temp dialled, oil pressure is good and now all I need to do is get the carbs dialled in and its off to rego

Congrats on the rego - I bet you have a new daily drive now.

binner ·
well , now that the project is finished it's back to what I was doing years ago........ DH
got my sweet race bike back and its almost ready for its first race in Toowoomba.
Serious85 ·
I seen this down at Das Resto... very nice man 👍
shaven ·
credit on the build...
congrats on the rego...
hows that engine going???
now you just have to bring it down from the clouds a few inches... just a few😁
binner ·
^^^^ cheers fellas
engine is strong, with the 2 ltr box and the C35 cam it has some punch in 1st n 2nd.
still getting a tiny backfire on decelartion so I have 2 days off and pulled the engine last nite to just check it over.I do have a wee issue I found with #1 carb (air leak) so going to fix thaat and whack in some diff jets to try n fix the backfire.
The ride height, hrmmmm yeah not sure if I have the smarts to lower the front, never done it before so a lil put off by the process.Rear is fine , I'm happy to dump the rear but need some one to help me walk thru doing a front 😁
matberry ·
Back-fire will be exhaust leak, not jetting
binner ·
it feels as if its dumping too much fuel when you get off the gas pedal at let it roll down to idle/stop.
Ive tried to locate a an exhaust leak but havent been able to pick it up,In sayinbg that though the #1 carb when coved by my palm does not choke up and fail, it still runs as normal, It does have slight suction but not enough to foul the carb completly.....
I have always wanted to change the j pipe config and how it is connected/bolted with those crazy clamps so I may just play with that too. HELLOOOOOOOOO welder 😂
I liked the set up of the other muffler that didnt use J pipes and those worthless clamps.
POP QUIZ---------> just took the manifolds off the heads, I look down into the cylinder head ports and > BAM< like about a teaspoon of fuel just lazing about there, like a lil pond of fuel lost. Is this a nono?
binner ·
well, I gave the j pipe clamps one last chance. Had to drive down the coast this morn after re-clamping ,tightening the muffler system and still getting backfire. Thats it !!......bye bye clamps I'm pulling out the TIG welder and making my own changes.
Its def coming out of the muffler and not the carbs so its gotta be the clamps...... just gotta be.
Bizarre ·
sounds like there is an issue with your carb if there is raw fuel just pooling there
Get a flange kit. Best thing you will ever do.
I( had a flanged exhaust.
Went to a clamped system - never again
Flanged joints forever

yeah, see on my last ute I had the flange arrangement, like in the image which was sweet.... and this unit is the one with the dumb ass j pipe clamp system.
So I'm about to make mine into a flange clamp up, got the flanges already so its TIG time :-) I'm pretty much going to copy VS, weld up where the clamps go and cut/weld in flanges close to the J pipe bend.
the carbs, well yeah I'm sure it's just dumping way too much fuel in at idle time
binner ·
welding was done
binner ·
take that
OZ Towdster ·
No wonder it leaks it has more joints than a nimbin mothers meeting , get rid of the flanged joint for the rear cylinders just above the muffler too.
And check your fuel pressure as it sounds like your flooding the cylinders which will not be good on a fresh motor , ie washing all the oil of the bores .

I did actually contemplate that after the test fit, may just do that tomorrow.
How hard is it to wrap muffler tape?...is it worth it?..After driving from the goldie to brissie the rear apron is fugging HOT! ...like cook an egg on HOT, so I was thinking about wrapping the pipes and see if that helps. Is that overboard?.
The fuel dumping is driving me crazy, checked and rechecked float level, checked and dropped fuel PSI to see if that would help but nahhhhhhh...... I have used the weber upgrade kit and I know it works a treat but just seems this engine just doesn't like it.
binner ·
just what you want to do to yr missus somedays........ 😂
I just went nuts today and welded everything I could...
see attachments for verification and discussion...........

was there anyone you know there?

track is cool, a few changes but overall its sweet to ride. Nearly died several times, massive bar hump over the stoopid last jump and squealed like a girl in front of crowds.... thats was fun!!
Didn't see anyone I know from old days but did see KOVARIK there and maltman apparently making a comeback of sorts.
Raced the wrong class (vets) but got 6th out of 9 I think, truly 3 years since being on a DH bike.......wow, how much you forget and how cautious you become....
matberry ·
Dont wrap the s/s, it'll fatigue and break
binner ·
^^^^ ahhh ok, cheers Matt! 😉
so , here are some thoughts and notes I have made since driving on road up and down the coast a bit now and the daily work drive.
> I would not buy this type of muffler again.. too many joins, has already started to brown/tan off even though I have been cleaning it.
> engine build is ok but I feel the C35 cam is kinda lumpy for around town driving (I'm not knocking the CAM, so don't get your panties in a knot) You can feel the build wants to be driven hard and hates creeping along in peak hour traffic.
> Highway driving is f@%$ing awesome!! GPS had me at 140 klms going north last week for about a 2klm stretch and it still had more but I then was fearing for my own safety with the rest of the car maybe disintegrating around me so I pulled back. 😂
> I have already gone thru 2 drivers side mirrors, on one the thread snapped (soft dough metal) and the other unwound itself and fell out onto the road.
>Even with body deadener on the highway it is still a bit loud in the cab.
> I will never use DBshenker to freight goods EVER!
> I will never do a ground up resto again EVER.
> Central locking is so nice to have in a 42 year old car.
> Window tinting yourself sux ass! (I was good years back but seem to have lost the touch)
> Measure 2wice.... cut zero..... go back and measure the 3rd time then cut you fool!!!!!!
> 2ltr gearboxes kick ass
> Cylinder head temp gauge, oil pressure guage and oil temp guage have me hooked, maybe it would be better only having a pressure gauge and not have that feeling like all I do when I drive is watch gauges fluctuate
> I love watching DVD's in the back seat with wireless headphones or even better transmitting thru my head unit real loud 😂
> Wish I did spend the money and time on making the ute flooring able to be lifted up on gas struts.
> Love parking it down at Kirra beach and watch people get on their knees to look under the ute, sit on the back for pics to post on facecrack etc etc... all i do to give them a scare is flash my alarm hazards and they git the idea.
> It stands tall so I would love to bring it down an inch but I'm not sure I could do it.
> Love the timber tray and the inlay VW logo
> Love to drive it!!! 😀
more to come........................

Where are you at with the carbs?
binner ·
Bizarre wrote:Where are you at with the carbs?
playing with jets this weekend if it doesn't rain.
Still got small issues with one barrel after the trip on highway last weekend. But apart from that runni ng smooth.
binner ·
TheMiniMan wrote:so gettin all soft in your old age Ian :-)
very soft, but may just squeeze in DH this weekend if it doesnt rain
binner ·
...fitted electronic ig this arvo
smooth and responsive, felt the difference almost straight away fitting electronica. So much smoother on acceleration and at idle it feels like its smoother. Haven't played with jetting yet, going to drive a bit like it is with electronica and see how it is.
yum yum
Klaus ·
Plug one of your booster fittings as you only need one to run the brake booster , as it simulates a balance pipe which will stuff up mixtures on a worked engine
binner ·
.........so , I have joined the exclusive club. fire in the hole. 👎😢

what - what - what...............please explain

OHHH ..lets just say I had a wee fire in the engine bay ok. At least it's being looked after by insurance.
h ·
oh no poo bum wee yep that sux
I hope someone VW n not VW are fixing it..
hope it's back for action day mate..
Scottkombi ·
Check out this engine bay automatic fire extinguisher system:
Should solve this problem fairly easy for next time!
pogo ·
must be running a wee bit lean there mate
binner ·
ooooooooooo kay, got my ute back..........pulled the engine to give the engine bay a scrub down and remove all the extinguisher powder that was hiding in cracks, it was fuggin everywhere!!!!. etched and resprayed the whole bay. Got real anal retentive and have slipped all the wiring that comes into the bay in that black umbilical toobing. Going to color code some of the tinware just for shits n giggles.
Worked out that my CR is too low (1.85mm was my deck height), so while the engine is out I shaved down the barrels and set the deck height at approx 1mm. Going to cut the heads and reduce the cc's to around 55cc's (they are 59cc now) which will give me 9.3:1 CR.
Ahhhhhh money money money.........😂
Bizarre ·
Good to here she is back
binner ·
some works...... and i went into work (workshop ) and fabed this up in 2 hrs this morning....
binner ·
so... if anyone in bris needs a spring comp tool, you are welcome to use it...........
I figured it's easier to make one than buy or loan. 😂

So why did it catch fire? Just read through the thread and don't remember seeing if you mentioned why you had a BBQ.
It isn't mirrors that fall off my kombi at speed!! When I hit 160+ my wipers work their way up the screen to 12 o'clock!! Lol

Fuel dump in cyl1 and barrel ignited and thus in turn ignited filter , by the time I knew it lit all the wiring was cooked and the carb.
