I felt my world come crashing down around me this morning when I received the phone call letting me know that my dad (my hero) had suffered a heart attack at 5am this morning .
I went and seen him shortly after surgery , where they put 2 stints into a major artery that had closed . This same artery had been attended to in 1999 . He looked like crap and was totally exhausted . As sick as he felt , all he asked me was how the heads were for my oval .....
At 6-30pm I took my daughter (Brittany) to see him and after explaining to her that he did not look too good at all earlier , we entered his room to find him sitting up in bed watching TV and he had just finished dinner .
He is feeling much better now after the stints have been installed and is off to ST George hospital in the next few days for open-heart surgery . I cant get in contact with Rodney as he is in Fiji , so I hope he reads this .....

Sorry to hear about your dad Wayne, but good to hear he's feeling better.betch you had a little smile when he asked about your heads, betcha he said something like I don't know what all the fuss is about, sounds a lot like my dear old dad!

thanks Col , yes he did say that mate . He complained tonight that they wont let him out .
Dad and I were entered for the Australian Ariel Vintage Motorcycle Rally and was going to ride from Wollongong to Towoomba QLD in 4 weeks time on the old bikes . When the doctor told him today that he was not going to be riding , he replied with " I will get a 2nd opinion from the surgeon tomorrow about that" ..... just awesome !!

Sorry to hear Wayne, but sounds like he's a hard man to keep down. Go get that second opinion mate 🙂

Just on 5 weeks to the day that my dad had a Triple bypass I turned up at his place to see him sitting on a milk crate porting troys comp eliminators for his drag car. I said to him you shouldn't be doing this and his reply was well it less painfully than hearing your mother whining at me lol. Both Troy and I agreed and let him keep going for a bit longer before he started to rub his chest where they cut him open and at which point I stopped him and said time for a break.
Make him rest up Wayne!! My old man split his sternum open 2 or 3 times by trying to do too much too soon!! It does take a bit of time to recover from surgery but it doesn't take long to get back to some form of normality. 7 months on and my old man reckons its the best he has felt in a long time!!
All the best Wayne. Brennden

To Wayne and Rod
Your Dad Allan is a great guy
always good for a chat and many more to come love to hear his bike stories
dangerous ·
Good to now that Alan is OK.
That stint will give him new energy, and he will be back on his bike in time, no probs,
as long as he does his physio!
Carter ·
sorry to hear this guys - sounds like he is in great spirits now!
not to preach, but make sure he does his physio as dangerous said and then (you may have had experience with them before), exercise physiologist at cardiac rehab. Having done a bit of work in cardiac rehab it really does make a huge difference in a number of ways post surgery 🙂
all the best !

Louise and me went to visit Dad tonight and he is looking well and in good spirits . He will be transfered to St George Hospital on sunday and operation on monday .
While we were there Joe Tanti strolled in and my son Dean arrived at 7-30pm after driving from Melbourne at 10am , when completing a course examination at his flight academy this morning , in his 73 1300 beetle .
Thankyou to all for your well wishes and support ....I do keep dad informed of all your support

I wish you and your whole family the best of luck today with your dad. Modern medicine is amazing and getting better all the time. Just like the other people posted, heart rehab is one of the best things you can do along with spending time with a nutritionalyst . My wife Sue had a heart attack last year , know what you are going through, again best wishes for a fast recovery, Mike and Sue McCarthy
hypo-vw ·
many thanks Mike , Sue and all other members for their well wishes .
Allan is resting comfortably in St George Private Hospital and has been since sunday . The surgeon has advised him that he should be operated on soon . They have not been able to operate on him earlier as the medication he was on was to thin his blood to allow the heart to work easier and they wont operate while your blood is too thin due to the risk of bleeding excessively .
He is in good spirits and frustrated due to finding a really good deal in the just bikes magazine on another Ariel motorcycle ....

Sorry to hear Wayne and Rod,hope all goes well on Monday as I'm sure it will.Best wishes Russell (CBB Racing)
dragvw2180 ·
Your dad sounds like my wife Sue, I bought her a Goldwing 1500 and put a trike kit on it, she rode it once and then had the heart attack. All through heart rehab her motivation was being able to ride her bike again. She would go out into the shop and sit on it . She is riding now , and grins from ear to ear when she does . Again best wishes on the surgery and recovery. Mike and Sue McCarthy

Well dad was taken to theatre this afternoon at approx. midday , for surgery prep .
At approx. 1pm he underwent open heart surgery where the surgeon performed a quadripple bypass .... veins were taken from his left leg only which will allow him a stronger right leg to kick the old bikes after he recovers from the operation .
After 3 1/2 hours he came out of surgery and all appears to have gone well .... he has been transfered to ICU and has not yet woken and a machine assists him to breathe and function temporarily . He will remain there for a few days before being transferred to a private room for rest and recovery .

All the best for him in his recovery.
My thoughts are with the family.

If good wishes do the job, he'll be back on the bike in no time.👍👍

Thanks for the update Wayne, glad the surgery went well. Best wishes to Alan for a speedy recovery.

recovery for Allan had been a bit slow for the first few days with him feeling very ill , unable to eat and unable to get out of bed . Fortunately he was not in any pain which confirms the large quantity of drugs that have been pumped into him to make him feel comfortable , but at the same time make him feel ill .
Yesterday (friday) mum got dad out of bed , showered him and got him to take a small walk to the ward loungeroom where he sat in the sun for about 15mins , before returning to bed . He also had 2 small pieces of meat for dinner .
Today (saturday) Allan had a small amount of porridge for breakfast , got up out of bed and had a walk around his room a couple of times , had a shower and had 2 small sandwiches for lunch . He is feeling much better today and is on the road to a full recovery ...👍

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Good to hear Wayne. Now to get him up and walking around and excercising to get the blood flowing. My old
Man was out of bed 4 times a day for the first few days and they walked him around the ward at a slow pace.
hypo-vw ·
went to visit Allan yesterday afternoon at St George Private , to find him sitting up in bed chatting to a couple of his vintage motorcycle club mates . He looked really well and smiled and joked for the first time since surgery .
After his mates left I went for a walk with him around the ward and he felt really good in himself . His left leg had been cut from ankle to above the knee to remove veins for his heart surgery , and is much more painful than his chest .
Today Louise and I went and picked Allan up from hospital and took him home , where he is resting comfortably . He is feeling better each day but will need plenty of rest before heading off to physio next week for the first time . Mum felt glad to be home after staying in Sydney for 2 weeks at a motel and travelling to and from the hospital each day to be at Allans side .

Thanks for the updates Wayne, glad Alan's doing well

Best wishes from me to all the Penrose clan.
My old man fractured his back in 11 places around the same time Allan had his heart attack. He insisted on going fishing the following weekend, can't keep these old buggers down.

All the best mate. My old man went through the same late last year. Not the best when ya get a phone call from the other side of the world at stupid o'clock in the morn. You know something is wrong but you have to go by what you get told down the phone.
