new sides goin to go in, thanks to Al an Steve at Das Resto Parts for stocking the bits i needed.
some accessories goin on it.
from a wrecked 56 bug, need new rivets for it, an yes i will drill the original rings.
flying bonnet emblem, cast from an og one, (thanks Bob) i made a few of those.
bonnet straps
3 spoke
ratty mangels, but thinkin ill run stockers. still undecided.
with rusty flying swastika logo hubcaps
57 36er with the judson, some NOS bits goin on this thing as well.
theres another build thread about this engine only a couple of weeks build difference btween the car an engine.
started chassis
trial fit the wolfsburg west halves, thick metal an good fit
drilled holes all way round.
then welded the shit out of it
needed a little tweaking after initial welding for the rear half, but overall a good fit an impressed with the quality. grind back the tops an get it ready for por15 all over it.
cleaned out all the cable tubes except for the choke, so off to find some tube and install it instead. bit of work involved but worth it in the end
both sides now welded in.
cuttin tunnel to fix cable tube
reattached rear plate thingy
rubber mat buttons
both sides done finally
put on the pedal cluster to weld in the bottom lockin plate
trialed the rubber mats to make sure i got the buttons in the right spot
loaded up for sandblasting
chassis is 100mm too long to fit in the tray. oh well
beer an tools for headlights
early bosch glass in early bosch frames, had to drill holes for the hinges, prob should of saved the frames, but if i put them in the cupboard for a rainy day they will never be used.. purists will hate me now
finally got out to stans an had a chat about the 36er, i already knew it had been rebuilt, but he was quite impressed with it an how good of condition it was in, even said the bearings will be fine to run, but if ive gone this far, might as well change them all out.
used his gear puller to pull off cam/dizzy gear.
new bearing on
heat up gears to slip back on
all done, crank is good to go back in now..
was goin to do the rod bearings as well, but chose against it as they are still really good as well..
hot washed the case an heads now to clean them up a bit before reassembly.
back from blasters
por 15
engine work.
got a high flow oil pump goin on it, so had to change the studs on the case.. u can see the difference.
good to go higher flow pump now!!
checked the cam in the case, it wasnt ovalled an sloppy so good to go again..
will turn straight..
nos pushrods, checked the clearance in the case an adjusted tabs as required..
dropped in the dowel pins for the bearings
lined up bearings with pins an dropped crank in
got cam right
an presto!!
high flow pump bolted in
new rear main seal, shims an gasket installed
polished flywheel for a good fit
all on an checked the end play, good clearance an crank/cam turn like factory
dizzy drive gear.
accidentally dropped the spacer shim in the case, nothin a good magnet an patience wouldnt get... wont do that again tho..
waitin on pushrod tubes to turn up then the heads/barrels will be on... wont be long at all!!!
cleaned up the heads, pretty good nick too.
rebuild a fuel pump with bigger spring for judson.
used wolfsburg west rebuild kit for internals..
nos base for pump
inserted return line screw for fram system an bolted up distributor
crank pulley an tinware, enough room for the bigger oil pump as well which was a concern i had.
and judson bottom pulley on as well..
tried to take out the studs for exhaust from the heads but kept snapping them, so off to machine shop to get them out, i hate gettin other people to do work for me...
Back from work 2day, so will get into it again this week

LUFTMEISTER wrote:Hey just checking.😵 Normally there is lube everywhere on gears and rods and cam. Looks good. Where did you get the pans from? Sick of brazilian rubbish.😬
Got them from das resto parts, they are the Wolfsburg west ones, good thickness on them as well, I've had brazillian ones b4 as well an these are far superior to them.
D-train ·
some more on the engine. ill get onto the body soon...
finally found where i put the oil cooler, so on it went.
head tinware, heater boxes on
mmmm, arbarth
j pipes were fucked so new ones on ww ones.
lined them up an tacked them
ready for welding
welded up an installed back on engine.
heater boxes cleaned an installed in workin condition again
more tinware installed

generator and fan housing installed.
compressor put on the manifold, carby just sitting there, still some work to do to it. Magneto connected, belts, just starting the fram set up....

I've known of it for many years. Had the option of taking it home with an old country buggy from there when he was having a yard clean up after council had a spit.
Did you ever see the 55 ragtop oval he had there in the old run down shed many years ago. Japanese bloke picked that one up. its now in the USA.
I'm a newi boy. only been in brissy the last 6 years
D-train ·
i wish i saw that one, i remember all his cars as a young kid b4 they all got sold an scrapped, he had some treasure...
after the wknd of driving an beer, a couple of things done, notched spring plates an painted.
beam painted an half assembled
paintin up the front end bits, before the k&ls get rebuilt with dropped spindles in them.
hopefully some more 2moro

Only dust we will be eating is from the wind blowing off the pan and motor in your shed. The cobwebs and spiders are more likely to get us first 😉
D-train ·
Ooooohhhhhh....... Now that's more incentive to get this thing goin.. I'll lighten it where I can with fiberglass an a whale tail to keep the back down in the race. Haha

an got gas so did the bonnet...

haha... building this for it.
ok, so after play time at the beach, got some more work done...
missing whole bottom section.
replacement section from a wreck
cut cut
trial fit
clampy
the door was super wavy prior to my hands gettin to it..
clean an paint!!
one door down one to go..
then the body
hopefully i weld a shitload better by then.. haha

DieSchnelleKafer ·
ooohhh i got one of them 175i welders aswell, they are kickass! bestest thing for sheet metal welding
D-train ·
Finally got around to gettin the body from dads to start.. In between nappys an spews..
finally started the body, on the rotisserie
pin holes through the drivers side channel
fixed
had to make a new captive nut
good thing they invented grinders..
and done. its not a show car so the patches are good enough for me!!!
passenger side was paper thin an full of holes
a beautiful rust free fatty door
mmmm cut
mmmm patch
thanks fatty
more patches from fatty to come...
hole in roof? what hole?
bit of cuttin an welding, no bog or filler will be used either.. yay
had to patch the front from it rusting through
top of passenger heater channel
patched with the carpet holder ready
trial fit the panels just to make sure all works
bolted rear guards to check rear apron.
was rooted so off it comes
trial fit
need to trim an tack in place after check an recheck...
D-train ·
should have the body finally done by 2moro!!!
DubbyFan ·
Wow this is so cool, love the pic's of the body on the back of the SC ute and the resto under the tree!
Can't wait for more well done..........
D-train ·
finally got around to getting the valance done, taking back the bog revealed more surprises, so a bit more welding. i dont understand why someone would go to all the trouble to repair a panel then fill the rust holes with bog. not that hard to put a plate in..
oh well.
bare metal
red oxide
so finally all the major metal work is done. but its that time when i have to go back to work, so the toys go away again.
bit tight on space now, so only one thing to do...
couldnt help myself..
now to wait 5 weeks till i can work on it again. damn
annosL ·
Great stuff! thanks for sharing!
Turbo54 ·
Hey Dion, looking good. Your engine bay almost looks as full as mine. Haven't been on for a while. Been real busy. I will update mine with some pics of what I doing with mine soon.
Heath
5lam ·
Oh my! That looks so sweet!
What are you doing with the sections you've repaired? Leaving it red oxide, or are you going to try and blend it?
D-train ·
Prob leave red oxide for now. Was thinkin of blending, but would prob look a bit odd, it already looks odd with the one rear quarter with paint on it, the joys of a cover that worked. Once. Haha
NUG637 ·
How did you go getting that metallic orange paint you were asking me about? I also spoke with the guys in the states for you... They said your custom flame design rims can't be made in 24" only 22" do you still want them? This rusty wreck will be gleaming then!
D-train ·
Oh well 22" will have to do then. Should be off to the sandblasted this week ready for the flames..
Resto64 ·
love this build cant wait to see more
just starting a 57
D-train ·
Won't be an update for 2weeks now. Have to go back to work, then I'll be stuck into it again.. Not much left on the old girl to do before final assembly.
baghall ·
enjoyed seeing your repair work. Encouragement for me, thanks.
D-train ·
No worries.. It's not goin to be painted/shiny/showcar so the repairs on it are perfect for what I want an how I want it to be!!
D-train ·
been over 5weeks since last play time, so here we go.
moved to the front to work on again.
after my recent postie drop (ankor wax) thankyou brad @ busnbug, got into it.
make it a little quieter...
musical cars.... body off pan again
quiet time in the cab
ankor wax again..
roof
mmm, dash
bit more 2moro i hope...
D-train ·
Got around to installing the new wiring loom 2day In between Nappies. Hopefully get stuck into the reassembly 2moro a bit more.
D-train ·
Little more again. It's strange how u can spend so long yet get so little done.. One door finished with all new ww seals. Thanks das resto parts!!
Installed more sound proofing, tar board in engine bay.
Alberts
Finally got around to getting a new fuel line for the chassis tunnel, so install that 2moro an hopefully have the body on the pan!!
hellbugged ·
Cool
D-train ·
little more 2day. heaps of niggly stuff that took ages and Mia even helped out.
had to disassemble the engine cause some dick (me) forgot the oil baffle plate in the generator stand..
got the body on the pan, lined up the holes, tightened up one of the passenger side heater channels only to have it pull the captive nut out of the channel. so back to cutting and welding again 2moro..
damn that sux..
h ·
greta work young fella
good to read the little one is on the job 😉
D-train ·
Finally, after cutting an re welding in a new captive nut, the body is married to the pan again..
Just need to install the front 4under the footwell, need to raise it to get under it 1st..
D-train ·
got a little done 2day.
guards on
windows in, dont want to do it again by myself.. frustrating
taillights on
an rear bar on..
front guards, lights an bar on
then passenger door, fitted, gaps are good an opens an closes like a devil!!!
an this turned up, RHD cruiser pedal. ive been helping Russ out to design it an this is the final product!! have it fitted 2moro.
D-train ·
not much to report 2day.
got the drivers door on an seals installed, lines up sweet.
then spent ages trying to install the front windscreen.
fuck doin it by urself its near impossible, the chrome started to come out then the seal came off the glass, on numerous occasions so fuck it ill get help with this one... unless someone has a trick up their sleeve..
D-train ·
Bit of a non event day, small things were time consuming. But happy with the results anyway..
Engine finally set up, choke cable extension, Fram, MMO an all wiring done an ready to fire up once again.
Got better brakes on it so had to make up a bracket for the dual resovior can be accessed through the round window (steering box access plate) made it so it bolted onto the dual brake cylinder, no holes drilled!!
2moro hopefully have all the little stuff done.. Hopefully.
Smiley ·
I absolutely love this car!!!
You have done such a fantastic job building it up. It oozes patina and style.
Keep up the great work, it's brilliant!
Smiley 🙂
RODZ ·
Thanks for letting us be part of your build. love all aspects of your vehicles and what you come up with.
love the patina.
D-train ·
Tank an tyre, check.
Now for round 2 of the windscreen..
Ratchet strap an some wood..
Final result,
Dion 1 windscreen 0. Technically it should be windscreen 1 as well, but I don't want to give it the joy of thinkin it defeated me..
Lets just say after the hours of getting frustrated the other day, I made it my bitch 2day.
whatnow ·
nice work on the pan, but when are you going to paint it?
D-train ·
whatnow wrote:nice work on the pan, but when are you going to paint it?
ill paint it with ur blood for that question henry.. haha
well blood is good and salty so might help blend in the newer panels.
5lam ·
Uber jealous!

oldnslo ·
love the windscreen installation technique. Hey where did you get the engine bay tarboards from?
D-train ·
So here I am happy as Larry,
-taken Mia for her morning walk, check
-muffin an triple shot, check
-checked the surf, check
-bowel movement from coffee, double check..
Then the phone.. U fly out this arvo at 5.
Mad rush to tidy up the yard, push cars here an there sort tools an make tidy..
So no work or updates for a couple of weeks..
But here's a little teaser
I've come to face the facts, money was runnin low and reality set in an made me realize I need to go back. U can't live on love an dreams...

D-train ·
finally got the ignition keyed and around to some wiring briefly, got it running but it was running like shit so adjusted the timing an still shit.. then thought about it an i didnt have the boost gauge hooked up. idiot..
so it runs, but now needs adjusting again to compensate for it been already adjusted..
heres a snippit
lurve the optional extra fitment of the satellite dish there in the pic young fella...
great for you tube on the go 😁
D-train ·
i was trying for the millennium falcon look..
D-train ·
engine was running like a bag of shit, checked an rechecked everything, then the prob was found. troubleshooting with people is good, u forget somethings sometimes. (thanks klaus)
the culprit
cleaned an ran beautiful again..
changed the distributor thinkin that it could of also been a problem. no vacuum advance now but an early centrifugal advance one.
All lights and wiring, done.
original door cards and rubber mats, done
finally got around to modifying the bracket for the cruiser pedal. bit of dilly dallying but all good an works a treat, no more sore foot from the roller.
greased the tracks, an in went the seats. not the right color, ill search for them still.
got the rust free decklid off bens oval for rego, then the yellow one will go back on.
would love a ratty horizon blue one tho to match the car if someone has one, give it up now!!!
ill see how i go with no carpet for rego, if he says i need it so be it. but for now ill run as is!! got to organize rego check soon..
J BOMB ·
might just take that instead of my bug next time im up :P
D-train ·
so been test driving it to fine tune it up an down the street, and have a small problem.
the hubcap keeps comin off. fuck losing them.. so fix the problem
feeling lazy, i took the rim an new clips to an engineer to see if they could put them in, they had no idea about it, there is a special rivet tool, but i didnt want to pay XX amount for it. so back to metalwork basics an made my own tool.
a simple bolt
drill a recess an grind a section
and voila!! a rivet/clip holder.
prop the tyre an rim over the clip an rivet, beat with a hammer an no more lost caps..
annosL ·
cool tool😉

got a call from work, leave where i am to go to katherine in NT (anyone up that way pm me!!) so a couple of days at home an bored, had this sittin around for ages an thought id test it to make sure it worked properly..
for those who dont know what it is, its an inline reverse switch that goes between the speedo and cable. havnt hooked up the whole thing yet, this is a trial.
original vw reverse light..
watch the vid to see the results an how it works, too much rain to hook it up 2day..
D-train ·
finally, 5 min install an away we go!!
all finished for rego.. what else can i add b4 it gets plates now?
kombibob ·
that reverse light is not going to make that death trap any safer!!
but sure looks good👍

death trap? i might have to install belts then..

don't go there 😂
for the rivet tool I use a bit of railway track off cut n a small block of steel, as the rim sits nice n flush holding the rivet in place and bash away above.. works well too

It took a while of hassling him but rescued it in the end, it was a complete car when he put it there an bits were stolen over the years but its all together again now an runnin so I'm happy.
D-train ·
so i had some vertigo issues with it..
an fixed
gauges were lookin lonely an shitty hanging on by cable ties.
thank you roof of scrapped splitty
and sick of looking at red seats, baz from ireland contacted me about having the proper blue ones....
an sorted
still have to do rear an replace the cards with the straighter ones from baz too..
D-train ·
some serious km's put on it lately, but got this old thing on it, gave it to my uncle years ago an he sold the car an kept it so back it came an on it goes..
still havnt done the rest of the seats, but got bored so stripped off the caps.
the rain we had had finally made them how i want them.
a little bit of rubbing..
ankor wax an back on again!!!
finally pulled my finger out, had a short day at work so onto the interior
get rid of this!!
halfway
an done
whlie the seats were out, do the cards too..
out with the old an in with the new!
an finally installed
also have had a little cold, a tiny sneeze somehow made the front end fall closer to the ground...
so finally got sick of the dripping box, gearbox that is. not the other one.
an dreaded doin this from the start, pulling off all the things and gettin the engine out.
but sucked it up an away i went.
an out it goes!!
got into it an pulled out the old/original shaft seal.
u can see the diff between old n new, an yes it was cracked b4 i pulled it. hard as a rock an doin nothing!
now to put it all back in.
an done... topped up an also added the stop leak oil stuff, now to see how much it still leaks if at all..
after a long run so it got some heat into it an didnt leak a drop.. cheering

Capillary stork gauge, all working an in one piece.
dipstick style.
all mounted an utilizing the existing holes so no driling needed.
an works.
god bless vintage speed goodies.. pity the old phone doesnt take good pics
also have a boot jack too from Craig so be interesting to see the difference in temp on the highway..

were they expensive to bring in and time frame?
Craig Torrens ·
So, spell the beans on your engine temp drops !

The plates were here in a week, not super cheap to ship but for what they are worth it! Not a light item...
Haha, sorry craig. On the road an it was runnin a tad hot an started to play up, installed the boot jack from craig an dropped 20degrees. Then didnt skip a beat the whole way. Could be other issues involved but the temp is somethin ill look into now make sure it's all how it should be. 20degrees is a significant drop! Thanks again mate for the jack.

finally got a minute 2 do some shit. changed my fucked starter on the panel to another fucked one. not happy...

stupid weather while doin it too... dedication in my hi viz rain suit
took it for a run to settle it in.
much better an straighter wheels
Craig Torrens ·
So they are the 4 inch drops ?
D-train ·
4" but size doesnt matter craig
or does it?
well, theres nothin wrong with been below average is there?
is there?????
MANTA ·
Would this work the other way around ...
Or should i say it ...
IF YOU WANTED TO RAISE the car ... like a beach buggy, to get more clearance
???????
D-train ·
I hear what ur sayin but don't quite understand. Raise? Like upwards? Towards the sky?
I'm afraid of heights so have my cars low. Haha..
I guess u could do it but the positive camber could prove to be a bit dangerous on swing axle
cnfabo ·
That's a cracking ride dion
Allbones ·
Could I ask how these work (sorry for the noob like question, just want to get my head around them)
I'm two splines on the outter lowered in the rear of my bug and the height looks the same.
Do you install these at the regular height spline and then the drop in the spring plate adds the drop? Are there any benefits to drop plates over extended plates that sre rotated on the splines?
Cheers, All bones.
D-train ·
Allboners, you can run them in stock position so u get the full travel ride like stock height but with ur car lowered.
It also eliminates some toe in with them been stock length with the 4" drop.
When u notch an lower standard plates that arnt lengthened or have elongated holes, if u watch the way they sit they arc upward pushing ur wheel towards the front of the guard more causing some toe in an camber which will chew out ur tyres quicker. With these at "stock" length they eliminate the toe in so it's like stock only with the camber an lowness..
Hope that makes sense
JER-FAB ·
Looks Sweet Dude!!
zoofish ·
One of my favourite Bugs! Thrilled to hear you bagged a Trophy at The Nationals.
D-train ·
Thanks fabo, was good to catch up at bens wedding too, won't be long till urs is fixed again.
Zoofish, was a surprise to win too. Wasnt expecting it that's for sure.
Jerry, thanks again for the plates. Awesome mate!
joesbuell ·
Looks good Dion. How's the ride now? How much $$$ are they?

Yeh that makes peferfect sense. Basically all of the cool factor and no loss of "comfort".
Would 4" be equivalant to 2 splines on the outter? OR would that be closer to 3".
I lowered without extending or elongating and It's something I have been meaning to address... Thinking this may be the way.
Cheers, Bones.
D-train ·
joesbuell, they were 285 landed in oz. all fresh steel no core exchange or anything. outright.
allbones, depending on how low u go too will depend on all the toe in an other suspension geometry too, the drop on the spline adjustment would also depend on how ur rubbers are, the worn the rubbers the more play so could be 3-4" but if u have new rubbers it wont be as low obviously.
Craig Torrens ·
I reckon we should do a group buy on the spring plates 👍😉
JER-FAB ·
Yeah let me know if you dudes wanna group deal!
beetle_nut ·
Iv had a set on my bug i did 3 inch and one outer spline was good.they are great quality.

RODZ wrote:Cant wait to see these fitted up, and let us know how they go/improve the toe in issue.
were they expensive to bring in and time frame?
I ordered a set today cost $306 AUD delivered spewing about the aussie dollar right now but that always happens when I need something from the states.

Great thread man!
D-train ·
Lots of things since last post.
One of my treasures turned up..
What is it?
Oh yeah..
An couldn't resist! Mounted!!
I've always wanted one an it was the right price so why not! An no point in puttin it "on display" somewhere for noone to see it.
had a shudder in the clutch an felt like the mounts had gone again, worst job but had to do it.
out with the engine, undid the box, swapped mounts an installed again, shimmed the bowden tube, easy but time consuming.
then...
battery has been goin flat, so thought id swap regulators over to see if that was the problem.
after installing everything i connected it all up bar the reg.
got sidetracked.
came back to the car an hooked up the battery,
tried to start it.
nothing.
popped the hood, checked fuses an stuff..
got back in an tried again.
still nothing but a burning smell.
shit.
ran to the back and seen the smoke.
unhooked battery.
too late, the damage has been done.
the wiring had earthed out on the generator an fried all the wiring.
time for a new loom..... again.
rookie mistake. so fuckn pissed.
Instead of fucking around with fixing loom, I've got one coming to replace it, not sure how far up its fried to so ill change the main section.
But also get into these
Holes punched
Captive nuts welded!
So when the engine/firewall comes out again ill install these so they are hidden behind it all.
4mm plate cut 6"x4" these won't be goin anywhere.. Seen a mates new 4x4 with 2"x2.5" 2mm plate sikaflexed on. Looked shit.
Running cost so far.
Plates: $10
Nut n bolts: $5
Total: $15
so my decklid has finally arrived. thanks braddick for lettin it go!
1st things 1st.
i have come to hate working on the engine with the decklid on, so out with these
an on with these
an done
im really unsure about it still after havin the other one on for so long. just looks wrong, might clean the car an let it get all dirty again so all panels match then.. its amazing how much airborne crap the ankor wax collects
Finally had some time to get onto it... once again out with the engine..
off with the bolt ons an firewall..
toast anyone?
out with old n in with new!!!
new loom went in sweet, more of the old interior fell out too, amazing how much is still up there. haha. plates will go in then firewall n engine.. then connect everything properly n fire it up again!
its amazing the difference it makes workin on the engine with the decklid been removable too
Little more tinkering..
Drilled a hole.
Yay.
Bored yet?
Installed a plate.
Double yay.
Even with the bolt at full reach through the plate it's still not that bad, an with the engine back in u won't even notice it..
Got the engine back in an all wired up. Not doin that trick again..
Test fit again with the decklid
Still needs a little tweak but good so far, thanks for it again Braddick.
I had the 6v battery on charge for 2days an noticed it never said full power, so it's been off for a day now an I tested it with a multimeter. 4.28v. Shit, battery is fucked an not that old either.. Should of tested it 1st but I assumed it would be good not been an old battery.
Live an learn.
So finally after days of troubleshooting an various msgs to people (thanks guys, nug, Leon, Jon, dad, bruce..) finally nailed it to the distributor earthing out so no spark to points from that.
Prior to that, pertronix wouldn't fire, changed to normal set up with points an condenser with no luck so rebuilt this one.
Back to vacuum advance n points...
It fired 1st go but stopped, thought it was fuel but was same problem again.
Bent some wires, an away it went! Finally cured!!
Was lucky I had a few to choose from too, if that
one didn't work was goin to be a long day swapping distributors..
It's amazing how a simple thing is such a headache, if it didn't start a match was goin to start some petrol in it!
Then I thought "I'll give it a clean" so the pics will tell a tale.
Before
U can see the difference here
After a wash with degreaser
The decklid has come up good too but more rusting to make it match properly.
finally got around to installing bits.
original mounting plates, so will copy position.
an drill
an lowers mounted..
finally found the right anchor point bolt size with mount
and got the seat in finally
anchor point works a treat
been wondering about the mmo intake for it for a while, then lately ive noticed after a little the judson gets a little noisier.
turned the mmo adjustment an not much difference. bit the bullet an then this happened.
whoops..
pulled it apart to check n clean it.
the intake shaft didnt seem to have good flow through the "whistle" end. if u have seen the end u will know what im talking about, looks like a steam train whistle..
pulled it apart an this is what i found
seems it thinks it was a cat.
big ball for a small tube.
so realistically, at idle when u set the flow of oil it would of been dripping at the correct amount, but then at speed with the higher vacuum an volume been sucked through, the hairball would of limited the volume been allowed through into the charger and leaned it out for lubricant.
this might be a small thing but could have a big result? or be one of a couple of smaller problems that are causing the heat.
Also had a phone call yesterday off the other half saying sorry..
Shit
Out comes the hammer an..... Presto!! Like new again.
Then off to get new shoes, bald tyres Arnt fun in the rain anymore..
Thought I'd upgrade the oval a little.
Had this shifter sittin from the old panel, so thought I'd put it in..
Size does matter! Haha.
Works a treat, just needs a little fine tune on it tho but I'm happy!
The steering was gettin a bit "how's ya father" so up it went an found this.
Not in good shape
Took it off an replaced with a new one.
Also fitted these since my tyres had no tread..
Still undecided. I do love steel rims. These will go on a mates bug.
it seemed misting rain after no rain for a long time make the roads slippery, and brakes lock causing skids..... into tow balls..
couldnt open the hood, so chop chop
damn, good thing "airbag" spare was there, saved a bit.
brought out my big hammer for the job.
acquired a new tool
good as new again
an presto!! like new again
finally the noise and the not staying in 1st and reverse got the better of me, time for an upgrade.
donor box
stripped of its dignity
new cone n stick
swapped the axles n tubes for 40hp ones to make it look the same.
sealed bearings to hopefully make them last longer
added some special sauce to help the fulcrums n gears last longer.
ready for install
machined flywheel while motor was out, also changed manifold, generator to a newly built one too..
out u go.
an out u go trash box
in you go
since wanting to keep it close to og, I wanted to use the split case bits, but came across a problem, split box bearing seal housings don't fit the 40hp tubes, an the 1500 ones don't fit either..so went an tried the 40hp ones with the split tranny back n brakes.. perfect.
u can see the difference in the 36hp splitbox, 40hp n 1500 ones here
like a glove now
and all back in.
list of things done
-1500 box
-40hp tubes, axles n bearing seal housing
-sealed bearings
-new gaskets throughout
-nose cone n stick
-rebuilt generator
-machined flywheel/ pressure plate
-clutch plate
-re torqued top head studs
-rocker gaskets
started 1st go which was great, went for a run and the difference is amazing. no tranny noise in the cab, smoother take offs, revs are better and seems to be a smoother ride. the only cab noise now is the throaty exhaust tone and the intake and whistle of the blower. even gear selection is better now too.
now the rear is sorted with the box, onto another "upgrade" for it ive had hidden away for a while..
average man size beam, 6"
came out of another bug because it was "a drag racing beam"
leaves were dry
cleaned up the surfaces.
red oxide
an nice n black for it all
greased up leaves an installed bushes
steel on steel rubbing isnt too good, an a little lube never hurt anyone...
arms on... just needs an install now!!
got this sorted too for it.. quick steer installed on a spare pitman arm.
fish26 ·
Nice work man, keep the pics comin also a vid would be nice
D-train ·
Try that for a little vid..

Nice work Dion, car is looking great! Keep up the good work!

Great pics and heaps of work
Can you send me a box of your enthusiasm
D-train ·
Thanks guys, been a fair bit of tinkering with it, more to still happen tho..
vw54 ·
I HOPE YOU REPLACE THE STEERING JOING RUBBER ???
D-train ·
YES I HAVE!!!
why are we yelling?
D-train ·
It's time..
An out it came
Then in it goes
Mounted all up an visually aligned the wheels.
Test drive was ok, tyres are hard up on the buckets so will sort out the ride height, readjust the tierods, an fine tune the rest!!
Little difference
fish26 ·
Hows the ride with the new beam?
vw54 ·
Wasn't yelling 4got to change the case
So the Judson Oiler was blocked with a hair ball must keep an eye on mine
Have you changed the split case gearbox for the later tunnel type why did you fit a new nose cone ?? do you have the wrap around front mount on that chassis
D-train ·
it rides ok, need to still dial it in to what i like so hopefully have it done by the wknd.
i knew u wernt yelling.. little joke.
the box was swapped to a 1500 box, the nosecone originally isnt a dougnut style but the later style, but because of the difference in where the cone sits from split to non split, the nosecone gets replaced with a bus cone to keep the box level and help with gear selection. i did a lot of research before i pulled it so i knew exactly what i needed to do the swap without having to wait for parts,
Dibsy ·
As always an entertaining read of an awesome Oval, got to be my favourite post !
D-train ·
adjusted the arms for a better ride and fine tuned the height, miss the buckets now unless i go to a smart car tyre..
just need to adjust tie rods and a wheel alignment..
finally its nearly.... "finished"
jobie ·
Very nice car!
Excuse my ignorance but how do you 'adjust the arms for a better ride'?
Joel
D-train ·
thanks Joel,
since its a 6" beam it has no shocks so to make it ride a bit better ive set the arms at a greater distance away from eachother so there is more tension on the leaves.
the bottom one has been pulled down as far as i could then lowered the car down so i could get the tension on it and adjusted the top to get the desired ride height making it stiffer in the front.
make sense to you?
jobie ·
Perfect sense. I thought about doing the same on my 56 (4" with shocks) but thought maybe the net result would be the same. I guess my first thought was on the money. Make much of a difference?
D-train ·
i did it with the 4.5" i had in there too,
made a difference with the 6" rides better now.
the steering box will come out now, ill remake another quick steer for a different pitman arm to put the old steering box back in, it had no play an was perfect
1cut808 ·
Love the build up. Can't believe your misfortune when it comes to dinging panels on the old girl though...
Very sweet ride!
shaven ·
Dion... lovely old girl mate.
And I remember when you were a virgin at all this lol 😘
D-train ·
Bored with all the cars looking the same "slammed on earlies" or with those yuk widened rims. So change is as good as a holiday they say.
