hey guys, im looking at buyin a beetle that has a noise coming from gear box when in gear and disappears when clutch is pushed in, im thinking throw out bearing? much involved in replacing it? any help apprecieated cheers

Gearbox could need oil. They get noisy when they start drying up. If it is the throw-out bearing, it's a cheap DIY job. Drop the engine, replace the throw-out, replace the engine.

As above it is not a throw out, prepare yourself for a box repair

throw out bearing would be noisy when depressed
that is, when its working.. not when clutch is released..

remember how old these cars are..
and most people don't check the oil...

what model beetle?

its a 59, havent bought it yet, started to think i should steer clear of it tho

You don't say what sort of noise. If it's a 'bearing noise', and it goes away when the clutch is in, it could be main-shaft bearings.

i havent driven the car in question yet, just going on what current owner has told me, might let it go, im prepared to pay good money for a bug but not if it has gearbox probs
