Nice

dubster ·

Wow that's nice

grumble ·

Wow! that is spooky when I first looked it is almost a spitting image of mine but then the larger front & rear lights,4 stud wheels,no white top & bumper overriders came into sight. Beautiful car & a credit to you. Is it electric blue?

type3disease ·

I like that a lot... Late model and a non vw paint not my normal cup of tea but looks awesome...

Nice... Very nice

AUSSIE_MICK ·

Another nice vw from Liverpool!

Camo ·

Hi Rick,

just finished reading through your Samba link and man you have done a great job. The car is truly a credit to you. Also I am only in Casula, so if you want a hand at all (bit late now) just send me a PM.

Let me know if you have any trouble with those brakes as I think I have similar ones that I needed to modify to get them fitted correctly.

Why haven't you posted all your progress on here as well as the Samba?

Anyway, keep up the great work and keep us updated.

Congratulations on your family addition (baby) and your car 😂

Kev

rickp ·

Thanks for the replies guys, the car isn't perfect by any means, and i think your car Kev and the amount of work that has gone into it would put mine to shame (although i realize it isnt a pissing contest lol)
but I think I am just over critical of my own work, I don't know why I haven't posted The car up here before, But thinking that it would be finished soon I should get to know some people in the local vw circle.

Thanks for the congrats on the little one, I still have to find a way to get a baby seat in the back so he can come out for rides as well.😏

Kevin I am in horningsea park not far from casula, just past prestons, and I will definitely chat to you about the brakes if any issues arrise, I'll be on the look out for your bug at the nationals. Who knows maybe ill be in next years one.

Calling around for tyres today, wish me luck.

Rick.
Bugger next year make it this year that is a nice Ghia,us Ghia freaks just appreciate a nice one and you obviously have put a lot of work into it.We had a baby seat in ours (almost 32 years ago and then had the 2 child restraints for a little while until we upgraded to a Datsun 260C)

vw54 ·

nice dont get to a lower profile tyers for the wheels

as it will ride like a TRUCK 😠😠

rickp ·

i wish i could but its a bit unrealistic..well no its a lot unrealistic.. you see

interior has to be finished, (still waiting on padding for the front seats, and have to modify head rests to slide up and down)

brakes need to be finished (fit rotors and master cylinder...easy, but im still waiting on the drums in the 5x130 pattern to be delivered)

wiring system needs to be double and triple checked to see if everything works (and that bloody horn wont stop honking ...GRRRR)

pedal cluster is in peices

need tires

need seatbelts

Blue slip inspection

registration

ect..ect...

i think this is a impossible task to try and make it within 1.5 weeks ..

i was trying to have it ready for this years show, but then again i only started working on it over the christmas break and the days are so short now that i dont have much time to work on the car when i get home🥲

nice dont get to a lower profile tyers for the wheels rnrnas it will ride like a TRUCK
i was thinking of going 165x60x15 on the front and 195x70x15 0n the back, 60 profile isnt too low is it?

karmann54 ·

Really nice car, I've been watching the samba post over the last few months as you've built it up. I have a '63 but it is very much at the start of the whole process.

When our kids were small (now 15 and 17!) my wife had a '60 ghia as her daily and we put the baby seats in. They do (just) fit, this was the early days of baby capsules I don't know if they've got bigger or smaller since then. The capsules are the tightest fit, the booster seats once they're sitting up fit in better.

On your tyre profile, maybe I'm just a sook but I think the 60 profile would be giving you too harsh a ride on a car where the whole family are going to be coming along. That '60 had Fuchs on it with 70 profile tyres from memory and I wouldn't want to go lower than that.

I'll be putting BRMs on mine but will probably just stick with the standard 165/80 front and rear, but then I'm also staying with the 40HP motor so you can tell I'm not looking for any performance.....

hus22l ·

Will look even better with the Fuchs rims! Good job! Thumbs up south west!

ashbaxter ·

Great job, looks great. Having done the same over the last year I can appreciate the work you have done and the colour is sure to turn heads

ashbaxter ·

I had the same problem with the horn, it's all about insulating the steering shaft from the column which i couldnt get right. I ended up buying a remote unit on eBay and wiring up the remote and putting it in the steering wheel boss to get thought the blueslip, does the trick Not something you can do with a stock wheel though.

rickp ·

thanks ashbaxter, now on the horn.... you never got down to the issue with the steering shaft?

todays update:

fitted moisture barriers and door cards today... hoping to get some time to work on the car this sunday.

i am still undecided on tyres :/

rickp ·

ok finally decided on tyres,

got 175x65r15 for the front and 195x65r15 for the rear... i hope i dont have any issues but if you dont bite the bullet and buy something you will never know what fits...

got started on tearing down the seats, and got a rear disk brake conversion kit.. looks like im gonna be busy (once that pesky thing called work is out of the way)

rickp ·

well i got the front rotors on without any issues, the rear disk brake kit fit in perfectly although i did need some axle spacers to allow the castle nut to tighten the rotor in place... and the 195/65r15 are a tight fit in the rear wheel arch but dont rub.

Rear

front

have not bled the brakes yet as the master cylinder still needs to go in.

had to raise it one notch on the torsions as the exhaust was 4cms off the ground LOL

and a little artsy fartsy photo

AUSSIE_MICK ·

Put it on a trailer and show it at the Nats 2morrow

grogy ·

thats a beautiful ghia.............. i got a red 62 at a similar stage. if u have any chrome[aluminium] trim that fits on the inside door cards. 2 at the bottom and 1 in the middle, i buy em if u interested in selling.

dubster ·

That looks so good with the Porsche rims on it.
Once again very nice Ghia.

Dubster

beetle_nut ·

Looks great.u hav done a good job.

rickp ·

thanks guys,

Aussie mick- the thought did cross my mind but it would have been a mad rush to get a trailer organised.

UPDATE:

Clocks are ready to go in the ghia 😀 with a little something extra

AUSSIE_MICK ·

Very nice.

rickp ·

thank you mick

biggish update:

well with a little bit of time here and there, i have got a fair bit done.. just have to steal the heater and put it in the garage 🥷 its been fairly chilly

Where to start??

The clocks have made it into the dash and almost all the wiring is connected (grrrr pain in the backside of a job) i thought the germans had bigger hands than the japonese but the wiring in these cars says otherwise

still looks like a mess ( i tried my best and failed) but all the lights work

even the brake warning light

the interior is coming along nicely, the carpet has had its final fit and is all glued in place, new kick panels were made and speakers installed.
pedal cluster was rebuilt and painted, new clutch and accelerator cables were installed as well

i had to redo the moisture barriers inside the door panels so that they drained correctly into the door rather than the way i had done them previously and then it was time to fit the door cards in place

the seat covers are also finding their way onto the car

also painted the rotors to stop them from rusting

hope to get some more done over the long weekend

Hebfan ·

Hats off to you an awesome Ghia, I mine was that far along, do you, mind if I pick your brains. What size rims at the front 4.5 of 5 and did you get these locally or OS, the shipping costs I have been looking at are around $400 for a set. Also who are you taking the car to get registered? I am also in Sydney and fear if I add aftermarket discs it would be harder to get registered is this the case?

Thanks again for the inspiration.

rickp ·

The wheels I got locally from wassim at vollks.com.au, they are 15x5.5 all around with 175x65r15 in the front and 195x65r15 in the rear... As for the registration side of things, I am not quite at that stage yet so I will think about it when I get there.

Camo ·

Wow Rick, looking better every day. Top job 👍

Kev

AUSSIE_MICK ·

Nice interior, wheels look fantastic. Cant wait to see it.

rickp ·

thanks guys, i am finally starting to see the finish line., i cant wait to drive the car and start coming on some outings with you guys🙂

rickp ·

got a little more done today:

bought some autometer sport-comp gauges

and installed them in the console

very tight fit in there, but plenty of room for the wiring, i am also thinking of getting rid of that bottom door thinghy.. i think it would look better open

also made up some plates to close off these areas of the engine bay.

ready for paint 😀

rickp ·

with the crappy weather around at the moment, still managed to get myself motivated and got the console in the car, gauges wired up for lights, ran wiring to the engine bay for the senders and secured the radio

rickp ·

a major update!,, as of now the interior has been finished, the fuel tank has been installed, the brakes have been bled, the steering wheel has been installed,

there are still a few little things to be done.

work out the horn wiring issue
replace the handbrake and get a boot made for it in vinyl
wire in fuse for reverse lights
ect. im sure there are more little things to be done but i couldnt help myself and......

i have just taken my 1st drive of the little ghia, WOW, it was damn worth it, cannot wait to have it registered and insured.

videos are a bit crap but im having trouble uploading to you tube so these will have to do

rickp ·

actually i just found out that i have to click "change quality" and you can watch in HD

newghia ·

1 week to Valla Rick........will you ?????

looking good,
Nath

rickp ·

hahaho no... i have to sell the mrs old car before i can register this one. should be cruising around soon though wich will be great once the weather warms up

as most of you have guessed right about now, i am a bit of a photo whore ... so here are some before and after shots

Camo ·

rickp wrote:as most of you have guessed right about now, i am a bit of a photo whore ... so here are some before and after shots
Before and after photos ❓ I couldn't really see any difference 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Na, top job Rick 👍👍👍👍👍

You should come just for a met up this Friday and say hello, even if not in the Ghia.

Kev

rickp ·

i wont make it out this friday unfortunately, i will definatelly try and be in the next one though thanks camo. 🙂

here is a pic of the little one enjoying the ghia 🙂

surreyp ·

sweet man nice job.

you have inspired me to get moving on my car - i am at the other end of my project, hope it turns outs 1/2 as good.

thats awesome,i i often read build ups to get myself motivated to work on my car and it was over 1 year after i bought it that i got a move on. i am sure your car wil turn out great!

more updates! (lol you guys are probably sick of my photos by now 😂😂haha)

tidied up under the trunk and placed the wire cover with a little modification.
i was thinking of painting the cover the same color as the body, but you have to flex the thing so much to get it in that even plastic primer, adhesion promoter and any additive i add to the paint doesnt stand a chance. the paint will crack 🙁 any way it still looks better than seeing cables everywhere

bought a gas strut for the decklid and made my own brackets.

which meant that i was able to remove the decklid springs and install my airfilters for the 1st time.

and to finish off, the engine bay covers were painted and lined with rubber seal to finish off the engine bay.

now i have to pull the carbs as shes running really rich (fouled the plugs) and clean them and order new idle jets

empi ·

Nice, where did u get the wire cover?

rickp ·

Thanks empi, the wire cover came from kgrp.

hanktheplank ·

Awesome job mate! That really is a beautiful Ghia.....

chris7 ·

wow that was fast!

isky ·

Congrats on the car Rick, it looks great! Just curious about your center console? Mind me asking where you bought it, or if you made it yourself? I've seen similar ones for sale but they're for bugs... thinking about going the same route for my ride 🙂

plastic primer?

you could try flame treatment.

tothemaxx ·

wow the car is comming along great. Would love to check it out one day since I'm local. BTW was it an easy swap for the front disk to porsche pattern or there was alterations done and also the rear did you use pressed studs or just use the lug nuts with the stem built in? Thanks

Pat

rickp ·

thanks for all the comments guys, i have been a bit slack with the car after the rta debarcle but i an hopefully back on track as i would love to enjoy the car as the weather is getting better.

thanks pat. where abouts are you from?

to answer your question with the front brakes it was as easy as replacing rotors with the porsche pattern, they fit straight onto the spindle and bearing. the rear brakes were more involved to replace the complete drum brake set up with the disk set up, in saying that .. it was a complete bolt on kit so no cutting or welding was necessary and completely reversible.

i used the orignal bolts, i have to find some with the right seat for my wheels as it looks like they are a slightly different contour to the seat in the wheel

tothemaxx ·

thanks for the response. I'm in St Johns Park which is 10 min away from Livo. Is your kit from Classic Veedub? I know that the fuch takes the ball seat lug not the acorn ones. Do you mind if you can pm me your contact number? Would like to ask a few questions if you dont mind. Cheers

flame treatment is commonly used through industries to promote paint or ink adhesion to plastics. Normally I beilve its and oxidizing flame is used and the free oxygen atoms in the flame oxidize the plastic making very receptive to paint, inks, dyes and even water stick to plastic after the treatment.

I see it on a regular basic with screen printing on plastic bottles, pretty certain thats the same technique used to adhere paint to plastic bumpers back in the early days when plastic bumpers came about and there wasn't good plastic primers.

coronal treatment is another one, uses high voltage to make ozone which is extremely corrosive, does the same thing to plastic.

rickp ·

cool, there are quite a few guys from the area , if you want to check the car out be my guest. catch up for a beer or two and talk VW(pm sent). do you own a ghia as well? and thank you for the information about the wheel nuts

sounds complicated, LOL,... i don't dislike the way it looks so i might leave it for the time being,

just finished putting together a little crappy video of my ghia, (waiting on some new lenses from the us for my camera)

check it out:----->>>>

Absolutely beautiful how did I ever miss this thread?

where did you source the gauges from ?

Did you have the engine built locally if so where did you get it from and what size did you go with?

Do you ind if I repost some of your pics on my facebook page?

Thank you., which gauges were you referring to? the autometers? they came from rocket industries

The engine is what was in the car when i got it , just checked over so its still a 1600tp, i may build a engine with more oomph later on.. my choice will probably be Rod Penrose

sure you can ad a few pics to your page 🙂

no need to convince the wife anymore, shes happy with my hobby😘 her first words after her first drive in the car were "This is soo cool" Got her hook line and sinker 😂

on the gas strut, i just got one from a local toolbox shop, it is branded Arrowhead Getdowns and it measures 510mm open and 250mm closed hope this helps.

Great job you've done there Rick... Threads like this helps keep me going with my T34 project.... But I have one concern with what have seen on your car.... The stock lug bolts are not usually long enough when used with alloy wheels... Have you checked to be certain you are getting sufficient thread into the hubs?

rickp ·

yeah i have been a little worried about them and i check them for tightness everytime i take the car out.. i am ordering some longer bolts in black to suit the wheels. thanks humpty.
