The fastest VW for the day was Wayne Penrose's with a lap time of 1:09.6580

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

So was there any carnage/ breakages? How many cars competed?

vassy66T1 ·

Looks like an awesome day!

Well done to all who made the effort

amazeer ·

Just over 50 entrants. Heaps of watercooled vws there which was great. The aircoolers have hung a lot of shit on the watercooled guys in the past, but they turned up in strong numbers and performed really well.

Results are available at http://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/results.cgi?26/05/2012.WAKE.S2.Y

Looks like everyone had a great day, some great times there too.

Greg your new wheels look great! How did the car run? I saw it dropped a bit off it's time.

Cheers

Hi

I just uploaded a video to youtube. I only bought the gopro on thursday so I made a few mistakes, turned it off when it on etc.

Hi

One of the cars that Guy Harding was involved with broke a lower control arm and munched the wheel and other bits up.

Ian when are going to put Roses videos up?

very proud of my son Dean . He flew up from Melbourne for this event , helped me at WPVW for the week , prepared his own beetle for racing , drove 180ks to the event , gave his beetle a good floggin and then drove home in the afternoon , was back on a plane to Melbourne early sunday morning .....well done mate !!

here is some incar vid of Dean having some fun at the 2012 VW Nationals supersprint

hypo-vw ·

the WPVW sports sedan sets fastest VW lap time at the 2012 VW Nationals supersprint . Here is some incar footage of the first run of the day in very cold and slippery conditions

1303Steve ·

Hi Wayne

Great videos, I'm new to GoPro cameras but I bought mine from a friend who runs Targa events at The Bike Shed Mortdale.

He gave me a tip, you need set the spot meter settings to "on" otherwise you get great detail inside but the outside appears over bright like in Deans video.

Steve

PS Where is everyone else's footage

Great vid Steve. Was that brake fade or brain fade on the last corner?

1303Steve ·

Hi Matt

It was one foot on two pedals, bloody hate wearing shoes when I drive but I have to comply with CAMS, I will have to buy some gay driving shoes I think.

vw54 ·

Great vid Steve. Was that brake fade or brain fade on the last corner?

NO its was because of the FRONT STRUTS
see they WONT take a corner 😂😂😂😂😂

bring back K & L forever

1303Steve ·

Hi

I had K&L when I was kid, now I'm all grown up I can appreciate the finer things, once you go struts you wont go back

sander288 ·

I'm with Birchall K&L for the win 😏

I like to think Porsche stuck with K&L on the 356 because it was better; not because the 911 was coming...

Great video though; Lee Harris certainly flew down the straight!

colin ·

Thanks to Steve and Wayne for posting the vids.👍

I need to have a talk to you, Steve.😏

here's my video, one of the slower cars.
still heaps of fun tho and it was great when leigh came up behind me to give me an extra boost and not wanting him to go past me. 😂😂

go pro's are great

fullnoise ·

Aren't GoPros excellent!

Here's a bit of in-car from my oval. The view gets interrupted briefly by a grey Superbug with some lunatic at the wheel about half way through 😉

well it would be better if you went forward instead of into the dirt

1303Steve ·

Hi

Great footage guys, its good to see how other people attack each corner and what gears they are using.

David's bug runs a stock 3.88 1303 transmission, I found that 2nd was too low for last corner onto the main straight and 3rd was too high, coming out of that turn I was only doing 3,000 rpm so it was under where the motor makes power.

Sorry if I upset other K&L lovers but boofhead and I have regular talks about such things, you guys got caught in the crossfire, he's going to leave you guys soon and have 1/2 a Superbug, he just need to go all they way and get struts make his car complete.

Steve

vw54 ·

Who u calling a Boof head

yep it will have lovely Ball joints very soon and i wont hear those squeaking front coil spring from the struts

Hey SC i notice a bit of over steering during your run whats that from or dont i need to ask 😂😂😂

I'm enjoying reading this thread and having a good laugh 😂😂😂

I think I even saw Rose check her makeup a few times in the rear vision mirror whilst driving flat out 😂😂😂

CT - your car's handling looks great from the inside video 👍👍👍

heres my footage. The oil all over my windscreen is from some vintage dude in an old Oval on Dunlops. He was going hard for a single port engine though

I think I need to drive my car a bit harder, maybe go back to 2nd gear for the fishhook & coming onto the straight. I also have no idea why I insist on changing into 4th gear for a split second on the back straight.
Fun day though
To conserve fuel.

Gee you have the stereo up loud when you're driving.

the transmission in my blue sports sedan also runs a 3.88 r&p - 1.125 top gear - 23.5" tyres . just checked on the gear ratio computer and I was going through the kink at the end of the main straight full noise @ 7000rpm doing 180kph . 👍

A very well sorted car, spot on race lines, and accurate almost easy driving style = fast times.

fullnoise ·

It was good to see everyone else' videos.

Wayne, your sports sedan looks like a lot of fun. You really have to grab it by the neck and tell it whose boss!

Gearbox wise I now have a 3.88 R&P. It was a big change after having a 4.375 for years. I made the change mainly to suit freeway driving. But I was hoping to be able to use second gear at some race tracks to make driving more fun. With the 4.375 it was faster not to change into second coming on to the straight at wakefield park. The 3.88 R&P hurt the quarter mile times. At the VWMA Sydney drags I was crossing the line in third and only just managed a 14.9 where the car's quickest quarter is a 14.6 with the 4.375 R&P.

Thanks to Club Veedub and the officials for putting on the event. They sacrifice time so we can have fun 👍

Judging by the puddle of oil under the flywheel that was leaking out of my car when I put it back in the garage after the long drive back; I think it's time for a rebuild.

Thanks JVL. I love the way the car handles. It's not sophisticated. It only has T3 rear springs, tiny swaybars, off-th-shelf bilstein shocks and a pretty straight wheel alignment with very little neg camber.

The most influential mods are:
1. Drop spindles (not the soft CB ones) which keep the front-end soft so it transfers weight to the front and makes the tyres work. It turns-in super aggressively. Look how early I can get on the gas.
2. The drop spindles widen the front track slightly.
3. The small 195/50R16 Yokohama ADVAN A050s lower the car and also grip really well. But because they're round shouldered they're really forgiving. I keep them narrow and use the softest compound possible (G/S) because the car is so light and under-powered it's hard to get the tyres up to the 60 degrees required to make them work. The tyres are now 3 years old and aren't even half worn and are still capable of PB times even in the cold like the VW Nationals.

I bought big springs, big swaybars, got the arms bent for more camber.... but that stuff sits in the cupboard.

My 2 cents on the handling.

who makes the spindles ct??

fullnoise ·

Custom Bugs and Buses made my drop spindles.

Mike used to have a process where he'd take 2 standard VW spindles and make 1 dropped spindle.

I tried the CB Performance ones briefly but the steering arms are too weak for this application (better not say anymore).

CT i think you have been looking at the wrong ones not CB Performance

CB are the best quality around

did you have welding done on your spindles ???
