Didn't notice a project forum so posting here. Feel free to move, mods.
Model: 1971 Volkswagen Beetle Brief History:
1999 - Purchased 3rd hand
Nov 2001 to February 2002 - Stripped to bare metal and sprayed in Honda Super Sonic Blue Pearl
February 2002 - Wheels and tyres replaced
April 2002 - Not-at-fault accident. Front and rear damage, engine damaged beyond repair
June 2002 - Everything resprayed except for the doors. New 1835cc engine with Weber carb (later replaced with dual Kadron carburettors)
Since that time, the interior has been reupholstered and the stereo has been through many iterations.
Time and the elements have since taken their toll on the paint and so the time has come. I have been deciding for a few years what to do - new car vs another restoration. I want to keep the bug so a full restore it is!
After months of searching for panel beaters and getting quotes, I have finally chosen X Customs to do the restore.
They are the same workshop that restored the volks.com.au Beetle:
From Saturday 9 June 2012 they are going to:
strip the car
remove the body from the floor plan
body will be bead-blasted, all rust removed
replace floor plan, all rust removed remove rain gutters - have only seen this done on very few cars before in the States and even fewer in Aus. Should clean the lines up and look superb
a few body minor adjustments - remove spray nozel on bonnet (never used in the 13 years I have owned the car) and not hooked up anyway, remove and seal up all air vents on the dash (the ventilation system was removed in 2002 anyway), seal other random dashboard holes, seal all screw holes not used for rear license plate
respray (paint will NOT be revealed to anyone until it is sprayed)
replace all glass except for windscreen
replace all door, window and between-panel rubbers
replace other various parts with new
rebuild
Estimated practical time is 3 1/2 months.
At the same time as the restoration, I will be ordering from Scat VW a turn-key 0 Mile 1915 engine with twin 35mm Solex carburettors, C35 Scat cam and Scat 200mm clutch.
I will be ordering the engine ASAP and have shipped by sea hopefully arriving around the restoration completion. I will install it as well as some blank brake discs and rear drums for new wheels & tyres.
Much more to come.

Work hasn't event started yet 😉
Yeah the damage was terrible seeing as it happened 2 months after the last restore. But that was 10 years ago.
And this coming Saturday marks the beginning of the next phase. 3 months time and it's going to be a show-stopper 😀

Oppressa wrote:3 months time and it's going to be a show-stopper 😀
Not meaning to be negative, but just thinking about what you are about to embark on. That's a very quick way to blow $30,000+
Unless you are very well off financially, why don't you do some work yourself and save a bit. At least then you can say you built the car or had some input!
I'm sure it will be a show-stopper and we will all look forward to seeing the end result as we all love VW's.

I understand what you're saying but tbh I don't have the tools, space, knowledge nor the want to do it myself. I will do the interior and engine but I have been saving for a while for this specific purpose.

Oppressa wrote:I don't have the tools, space, knowledge nor the want to do it myself. I will do the interior and engine but I have been saving for a while for this specific purpose.
Not enough space, I know that feeling. Great to see you have been saving to get what you want and know what is best left to the experts.
I think you would be surprised how easy the body comes off and the time frame it takes if you know what you are doing. (I only learnt when striping my car) You don't need a lot of tools to dismantle the car, but to carry out the repairs and modifications you want requires the correct equipment and knowledge.
If I can give you a hand with anything, give ma a yell. Glad to help if I can, just need the wife to give me a leave pass 😂😂😂
As I said, looking forward to seeing your finished car 👍

They saw it as a right-off and no the payout didn't cover the costs. My 'friend' wouldn't pay the rest so I had to fork out a few thousand...

Update 1
-Order placed for engine from Scat VW on 8 June
-Car was delivered to X Customs in Campbelltown
-While there I discussed with the owner some specifics of the job
-As well as the body mods mentioned in the OP, they will be installing new flush-mounted door handles. I haven't decided at this point whether I want the handle itself chromed or body-colour. The closest I could find to the design is these Aston Martin ones. Press a button towards the rear and the handle pops out. So entry will be keyless!
Oppressa ·
Update 2
Car is now pretty much stripped, body will be taken off the floorplan tomorrow and sent to be bead-blasted. Next week will be interesting as I'll be going down to X Customs to inspect the body after the blasting.
So lots of pics to come!
In the meantime:
-Scat VW finished the build of the engine and it has been shipped to Washington where the shipping forwarders (www.usatoaus.com) are. For those interested the receipt is below
-I have been ordering various parts which are below, specifically
Headlight chrome rings
Tail light chrome surrounds
New wiper arms
New Bosch wiper blades
Drift Iridium blue gauges to replace entire instrumentation. Exactly the ones in the below video (speedometer (KPH/MPH, odometer, trip meter, adjustable tyre circumference etc), tachometer, fuel, oil temp)
Drift is an Australian brand but interestingly it was cheaper for me to import the 'made in Australia' products from the UK (http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk)!!!
Camo ·
I like the gauges 👍👍

Update 3
Now it gets real! Went down to X Customs to see the body off the floor and check on the next steps. It was scary seeing my pride and joy in this state! Not only because it's bare but also because there is a fair bit to clean up.
-Body is ready for bead blasting, it's going on Monday
-The floor is going to be stripped and painted as well so a local mechanic will be removing the engine for me. When the floor is back from painting I will trailer it up to Sydney to install new engine and replace shocks then take it back down to X Customs the next day (but this can only be done once engine arrives anyway)
-Engine has arrived at the forwarder so I anticipate about 8 weeks for it to arrive in Australia
-I noticed a lot of rust along the base of the passenger side of the body (you can see some in the first photo). All of this is going to be cleaned up post bead blasting
That's it for now until I go back to see what the bare body looks like.
Serious question: anyone have an idea what a 10 year old 1835cc with twin Kadrons would be worth?
Camo ·
Please, go and remove the engine yourself unless he is doing it free. 4 bolts, accelerator cable and a few wires (easy) 👍👍👍👍👍
If not maximum price $20-$30.

mickya wrote:Okay great! Did these fit right on do you know, or is some mods necessary?
If your 68 still has the original wiper motor setup you'll need different ones.
71 and later used splined shafts, 70 and earlier had locking grub screws.
mickya ·
Thanks Joel! I've lost mine since stripping. Don't need them for a little while, so I'll post an ad later

Update 4
Finally an update! It's taken a while because we have been waiting for the bead-blaster to have room to actually take it all away! It came back from blasting yesterday.
I thought the floorplan was going to need replacing however it's actually in very good condition! That's the good news... the body doesn't look too hot at all though. There is a lot of work that needs to be done. Previous (shoddy) repair work is now visible and it all needs to be fixed. The roof looks good at least LOL
I'm hoping to have the floorplan prepped this week so I can bring it up to Sydney the following week to fit engine, suspension, new brakelines, bushings and any other work that's easy to do with an exposed chassis. If I'm going to all this trouble it may as well all be done right!
The engine is due around 5 September so it should be great timing.
When I asked Aymen at X Customs how long left he said he hoped to be done in 5 weeks. I said "what do you mean by done?" "Completely finished" he said.
I'm unbelievably excited! I have been wanting to do this for a LONG time and now I have a rebuild of my favourite model of car and I can literally customise it exactly how I want! It'll be better than the day it rolled out of the factory and should be a shining example on the Australian VW scene.
I have a few decisions on parts/alterations to make over the next few weeks but it's a fun journey!
On with the pics:
The dash is going to be completely reworked. It will be minimal, functional and look superb.
Oppressa ·
Update 5
Wheels selected and ordered from the US (6 week wait). For the look I'm going for they just had to be chrome. But I didn't want a ridiculous amount of it (ie too large or too many spokes).
I've also chosen what I think the tyres will be (right) compared to what was previously on (left). I wanted overall tyre/wheel diameter the same but slightly smaller profile so am going for 220/45 16:
Also in this update... new front discs have been ordered at 4x100 for the new wheels as well as a disc kit for the rear to replace the drums.
Birdman ·
They are obviously going to source a new body for you in order to deliver on that 5 week build date???
OZ Towdster ·
X2 or bucket load of new bog , one or the the 2
Oppressa ·
Not sourcing a new body but I should have updated pics this Saturday so we'll see how they're getting on!
Birdman ·
Mate, if my body shop:
A: Said they would use that body, or
B: have the whole car built in 5 weeks, based on that body.
I would run a mile.
69bug ·
A lot of rust that's for sure
Looks like you have a great plan though !
Oppressa ·
Update 6
I picked up a nice present today...
And inside... a turn-key 0 Mile 1915 engine with twin 35mm Solex carburettors, C35 Scat cam and Scat 200mm clutch!! 😀
Also the ceramic coated Empi headers, Empi J pipes and Phat Boy muffler 😀
Also a new fuel sender. At this rate it seems like EVERYTHING will be new!
Oppressa ·
Update 9
So major setback 🙁
The owner of X Customs has abandoned the business, sold it to someone and left his wife and kids. Who knows where the hell he has disappeared to.
I arrived this morning to check on my car only to find the new owner trying to help people who have their vehicles on the property. I spoke to one owner whose custom engine and wheels have disappeared. He is left with the shell of his car. Other people were there and out of pocket by tens of thousands of Dollars. I went and checked and luckily all my parts, stereo equipment etc is there.
I will go down next weekend to discuss with the owner whether I get him and the team (who have stayed, only the owner has left) to continue with work or if I take it elsewhere. The price has now gone up because of the amount of work required for the body.
I have filed an investigation with my bank to try and salvage at least some of the money. It will take about 4 weeks. I am expecting not to get anything back so anything they can claim for me would be a bonus at this stage.
So I picked up my licence plates (to return to RTA as I have ordered replacements due to the change in paint colour, yeah let's see how long this will take now) and left. Update next week.
Oppressa ·
Update 10
Unreal! Work has re-commenced. I went in and the body was raised up, it's got a job sheet and tools everywhere 🙂 Finally on the way. Rough welding/patching at the moment but I'll just let the pictures do the talking 😀
Craig Torrens ·
Wow, what a journey...........at least you can see its being welded and not bogged👍
Oppressa ·
Yeah sorry there is a bit more to the story but I forgot to update this forum. This was as of 2 weeks ago (sorry, long)
Okay so I went down this morning with the possible new panel beater. He said it would be very hard for them to pick up the job seeing as they didn't take the job apart. Also for their electrician to come in and pick it up without seeing it originally. He is also down a few helpers at the moment at his shop.
So I was left with X Customs (or whatever they are changing the name to now). I met the other two investors who bought the company from Aymen (so the owners now are Chris, Shannon and Matt. Shannon owns a car audio store just down the road in Campbelltown). And I had it wrong, Aymen is Lebanese, not Armenian. India is where he has buggered off to (on his website he even said he was starting a franchise there). Shannon said last week two Lebanese guys had come looking for Aymen, apparently he owes them $3 million. I don't think even escaping to India will save him...
Anyway, I have decided to let Chris continue the work because:
- I sort of have nothing to lose now. I'll claim insurance if my car disappears
- What are they going to do with a shell of a Beetle that needs repairs anyway, it's not like they're going to run off with it and the chassis and all the panel parts in pieces
- They can do all the custom work I require and in one place, all of the workers are there and they know what I want done (one of them especially was very helpful in helping me look for my new gauges which I had given to Aymen to install, and seems genuine)
- They don't expect any payment until completion
- My word of mouth for their new business can be nothing but positive for them if they do a good job
- Chris is happy for me to come down each week and get progress updates
So in a fortnight they'll start work mainly on my car. I told Chris that sort of means nothing to me now until I actually see work done as Aymen used to say the same thing "your car will have priority". So we'll just wait and see. I came out feeling much more confident though.
I will contact the Department of Fair Trading on Monday about the whole thing. And I have filed insurance claim through my credit card provider for the gauges that have disappeared and another for the funds I transferred for the work on my car.
Since the above, everything has been going smoothly with the new owner, Chris, and other new investors. As you can see from the above pics, I'm back on track 😀
Oppressa ·
Update 11
On a side note, one of the many people ripped off by Ayman has started to group together everyone who has been swindled by him. He's putting money into tracking him down (apparently he's in the US) and if we have enough people we can extradite back to Aus. We'll see.
Anyway, there is now weekly progress, hoping to keep this up! Rear beaver panel being fixed up as well as fitting, aligning and repairing rear guards and engine cover.
Oppressa ·
Update 12
Continual progress 😀 Some before and after shots of the bonnet edge and front repairs.
ian.mezz ·
good news.
Is that rear appron just bolted on so it can be remove
to make getting motor in and out a heap easier?
Oppressa ·
No it's not. That would have been nice now that you mention it but I've been buying so many parts and thinking of so many things that need doing, it didn't even cross my mind!
Oppressa ·
Update 13
Over the past week:
- Rain gutter on the passenger side... gooooone!
- New channel on the passenger side to replace the horrendously rusted one
- Bonnet edging finished and antenna hole sealed (I want this thing smooth so will run the antenna inside the bonnet, I don't pretty much never use the radio anyway)
- When I have time lately my mind inevitably wanders towards the restoration and what else I can do in preparation for the process and the next steps. I then go to cip1.com and start spending money! This week it was rubber! Window, bonnet, engine cover, chassis > body and body panel rubber! All original German and brand new.
By next weekend the driver's side replacement channel should be in and the rain gutter removed. After that the body metal work should actually be done! Onto the chassis which shouldn't need too much done. Anyway, on with the latest pics and comparison shots!

Thanks Paul. They're going quite quickly though. One guy solidly on my car which is going well.

Update 14
*SIGH* So I figured it's time for an update. It's not a good one...
So 2 weeks ago on Friday I messaged Chris who owns what is now called Xtream Customs to check if it was okay that I go down to Campbelltown on Saturday to take update pics. He tells me that since Tuesday he had been in discussion with his lawyer because the owner of the property that he is leasing from, has hired security guards and changed the locks on the property. He had no access.
I spoke to him the next day and he was hoping to get access on Monday. I couldn't really deal with it at the time because my dad passed away on the Saturday morning. So Chris said he would take care of it all and we would be in touch the following weekend (last weekend). I didn't hear from Chris so I drove down to Campbelltown. I knew that one of the investors in Xtream Customs also owned a car audio store. I Googled and found... Xtream Car Audio! He filled me in on the details but there wasn't much of an update: they were still in talks with the lawyers. Chris arrived and said I needed to get my rego papers so that he could send everything to his lawyers.
But then earlier this week Chris said the property owner was going to be opening up on Saturday and car owners could come down and collect their gear.
I've just got back now. Spent the whole day collecting it and because Chris doesn't have a new location yet, I had to tow it back from Campbelltown to Sydney 🙁 So now it's all sitting in my carport. My 2 x Pioneer subs and 7" Pioneer DVD head unit are the only things missing. I say "only" because there are a lot of other car owners missing much more (even whole cars).
So now I either wait for Chris to find a new location or I find someone else who can do the work. I live near the Artarmon auto district so I'm going to ask around. There is maybe only 2-3 weeks of metal work left then it can be prepped for paint. In the meantime though I will be treating the surface rust with deoxidine and then coating everything with a wax for protection (or something else, any recommendations to spray/coat on to protect for the next month or 2?).
The epic restoration saga continues. More news in January I suppose...
Paulc1964au ·

I have just read over all of the last threads since August, I am very sorry to have read about the loss of your father. That makes the car troubles seem small in the big scheme of things.
And shit you have had some bad luck. As you pointed out, you were lucky in the little amount you lost compared to others and then lucky with what the new owner did until he was closed down.
Sounds like you have had your fare share of a bad run and things are looking up. It great when getting boxes of parts, although the import mob didn't miss you at all.
As stated by others, good on you for not giving up and working around all the difficulties and seeing your plan all the way through (when finished) 👍
Hopefully one day we can all get together with our finished beetles and have a beer (or coke for me😂)
Merry Christmas and may the new year bring you much happiness and a completed car, Kev

Update 18
Today was only O & S Sportscar's first day back after the end of year break. I stopped by to drop off the new floor plans and front apron. They have already primered the entire body (except for the front apron which is being replaced anyway)! Fenders will be primered tomorrow.
I am ordering a new rear apron from the US as well to replace the less than satisfactory welding job that has already been done. More news in about a fortnight I guess when I take the rear apron and some other parts.
Also on their way to Australia right now are new Bugpack sway bar, rear IRS axle assembiles, tie rods, steering box, suspension urethane kit and a whoooole lot more. Yet another big order from CIP1 and I'm sure it won't be the last!
Bizarre ·
Looking good
Colour shouldn't be that far away
Make sure they check the spot welds of the seat runners.
I have seen them just peel right off
Oppressa ·
Thanks Bizarre. Still a fair bit to go...
I'm going to remove those runners as I have seats and runners that were in there before which I want to reinstall.
Oppressa ·
Update 19
God I love O & S Sports Car Restoration!!!
New front apron fitting
Fitting and measuring the doors. Little bit of rust to repair (along the bottom near the front). Those original handles are going, remember. Soon to be fitted with flush mounted hidden handles.
Compare the previous welding job near the top of this wheel arch, to this week's work attaching the new sill. You cannot feel the weld with your fingers!
They are going to be smoothing where the rain gutter was. So instead of being reminded where it used to be (as in this photo), you would never know it was there in the first place...
Yet another part ordered from cip1.com. The rear apron will replace more welding work that isn't up to scratch. But the bottom of it will be removed as has always been on my car to make space for the Phat Boy muffler.
Paulc1964au ·
looking good and by the state of the workshop looks like these guys are real pros
Oppressa ·
Update 20
Just a small update. Sealing up the dash (which I am impressed with so far, I can't feel where they have covered where the instrument cluster was). Goodbye vents, button holes and ashtray!
The front is now level and repairing parts of the fenders, doors and engine cover.
Sorry for bad shots this week, phone camera.
Doug Sweetman ·
wow..... cool stuff 🙂 I wish to be able to do a car to this degree of completeness one day, not just patching rust where I see it.
One day ! I will say, however, that I 100% agree with your assessment - your new shops work shits all over the last place.
Oppressa ·
Why yes, yes there are updates 😀
Update 21
New floor panels attached. Some modifications were required here and there as they are for left hand drive.
Reinforcing for the pedals. O & S went to the trouble of smoothing the ridges on the floorplan as well where the reinforcing will go
Yes I've been buying more. Fenders this time. We were weighing up work that had to go into one or two of the fenders to fix them vs paying $150 odd per fender to get replacements. It's recommended if you're replacing to replace the opposite side as well so I just got all four!
Not complete, still work to go here
Removal of the driver's side rain gutter has begun
Before and after of the driver's side well area
Dash almost complete. Still need to seal that vent on the right and smooth it all off
Bye bye ashtray
Driver's door fits properly and is operating too. This door has had the handle removed in preparation for...
Some flush goodness. Ooooh! 🙂
More next week!
Bizarre ·
I wanna know what colour!!! 😀
Oppressa ·
Update 22
First few pics are taken by O & S from the last week:
That piece of the door in the last photo is now completed. As with the rest of their welding work, you can't feel the weld when running your fingers over. Colour me impressed 😀 Here are my pics from today:
We decided to reweld the section that X Customs repaired because the weld was cracking and had holes when you looked from below
I would say we're now about a week or two away from the trial fitment of the body to chassis followed by the final attachment 😀 Still welding work to be done at the rear driver's side fender. Maybe a month and a half away from paint.
Also I have these for sale as well as some fenders if anyone knows anyone... Check the For Sale forum...
Oppressa ·
Update 23
So don't get too excited. Yes the body is on the chassis but this is just the trial fitment. The rest of the bodywork will now be fixed and we'll make sure everything is aligned correctly before removing again to paint the chassis and then do the final fitment.
Test fitment of original bonnet (handle removed as it'll be remote-unlocked(!), bonnet vents also removed), new front apron and one of the four new fenders
Both doors are now fitted to test hinges and alignment
Original bonnet hinges which are only being used for trial fitment. New chrome ones will be used for final fitment.
With the body on the chassis it starts to look just that bit more real 😀
Level front and back!

With regard to the smoothed of dash vents, how are you going to demist the windscreen? Just with corner vents?
May I also ask what you spent on welding, panels and body work?
Oppressa ·
The venting system pipes (and vents on bonnet) were removed about 10 years ago during the first resto. So no screen demisting (or water nozzle as that has been disconnected for the same amount of time).
Fenders and all other parts prices can be found on cip1.com. Fenders were about $150. Body work and welding depends on the work done per week. APPROX $1500 per week
Oppressa ·
Update 24
Driver's side rear wheel arch before and now with the newly fabricated panel test-fitted. Will be welded in this week
Test fitment of the driver's side front fender. Body rubbers will be test fitted soon as well
Making the way along the driver's side welding the section where the rain gutter was removed
And fixing where the substandard work was done on the passenger side
New lower hinger pillar cover

Update 25
Rear driver's side fender repair has now been completed
Found more rust that needs repairing (rear seat, passenger side). Damn it!
Testing the bonnet release. Original lock mechanism will be used with a popper for electronic release
The (rusted) sides of where the replacement front apron will mount to have been cut away and the apron will be welded in this week
Hopefully a week away from lead-wiping...
Oppressa ·
Update 26
So the lead-wiping was started this week and I took video of the process. Video here:
The progress has been great this week and I expect a similar amount of work to have been done by next Saturday.
The driver's side has been lead wiped and filed (will be sanded and smoothed just before painting)
Front apron welded in place and both front fenders fitting well. Yes, I am aware the bumper is upside-down. I told them 😉
Passenger side, rear wheel arch. Previous bad welding will be replaced similar to the opposite side. This shows one of the pieces for this side. The other one (shown by the texter drawn on the body) will be welded to this one, the cutout will be made and the single piece will be welded in place. Cutting this section out will also remove the rust that was seen in one of the images from the last update.
The completed section of lead wiping after the demo
This is on the passenger side near the front. The antenna hole was sealed (by the previous workshop) and it's hard to see in the shot but the result is quite concave. This will be lead wiped to blend in with the shape of the door.
This shows where the replacement section went in on the driver's side last week. The interior piece that was cut out will now be welded back in place.
Oppressa ·
Update 27
Lots of progress means lots of pics! 😀
Test fitting of the running boards!
This side still needs to have the lead wiping completed
But this side is done 🙂
Rear apron has been fitted in preparation for the mod to make it easily removable. Engine cover fitted but still needs to be properly aligned (and a bit of leadwiping where the lead-wiped area meets the engine cover).
The repair of the passenger side rear wheel arch...
aaaaand done!
The replacement piece for the interior has been made, just needs to be welded in this week
Rear apron
Where it meets the body. It will be modded this or next week so that it is removable.
Oppressa ·
Update 28
Test fitting of panels completed so off they come and the rest of the bodywork is being completed over the next week or so.
Repairing some small issues with this panel
After the leadwiping, the passenger door goes back on AGAIN for test alignment with the lead.
The lead wiping has now been completed on the passenger side including this area just infront of the door hinge and smoothing the groove that the bonnet closes down onto. It all came up looking fantastic.
The driver's side lead wiping is nearing completion too:
And the driver's side rear guard panel has now been completed and smoothed.
The removable rear apron mod has been worked out. I have marked the four locations below where the bolts will hold it in place. The guards will not have to be removed to remove the rear apron. The rubber will be cut where the body meets the rear apron.
Oppressa ·
Update 29
Some corking required on the passenger door to push it out a bit and line it up with the body.
Passenger side rear lead wiping is being finished today.
The rear apron showing the four bolts that will hold it in place.
Lead wiping complete on this side.
The rear quarter panel has now been fully repaired.
And the interior rear panels have been welded back in place.
Door fitted...
And aligned!
Some work needs to be done in the corner of the bonnet as the gap gets a bit too large there compared to the passenger side.
Did you cut your rain gutters off, good luck getting it registered or engineered
baghall ·
Looking forward to the end result!
The guys certainly do some nice work!
hrastovica ·
Wow nice work, great space to work also! Wish i had a garage that was that big.
When do you foresee the car being ready?
Oppressa ·
Update 30
At this point it's all about final touches to the body so that the painter has to use less materials and has less touching up to do. Getting so close now 🙂
Infront of the hinge on the passenger side, the indentation along the door has been recreated on the front panel so that it flows
Passenger side has now been corked and aligned
Fair bit of tidying to the rear end around the engine lid and where it meets the body
Some more lead wiping around the gaps to make them even and aligned
Repairing any imperfections to the engine lid...
And to the bonnet
Before and after repair work, driver's side front end
The configuration for the gauges, just need to be filed away for a perfect fit
A Riley in the workshop had just had some of its panels sprayed this morning. Unfortunately the image doesn't do it justice. The paint looked stunning

Ahh I CANNOT wait! I'm so pleased I found O&S.
hrastovica wrote:When do you foresee the car being ready?
Need to paint chassis then bolt permanently to body. After that point, about 1 month for prep and paint.
Then transported to another workshop where mechanic and I will fit:
-new Scat 1915cc engine
-new Scat pro street transmission
-new brake lines
-new suspension all round
-new brakes (with drums at the rear being replaced by discs)
-new wheels
-new handbrake
which will be about a month.
Then I hazard a guess at 2 more months back at O&S to finish the build. 5 months maybe?

I spoke to a body shop ages ago about shaving the gutters off and they suggested that you would need to weld brackets from the inside to keep it all rigid, before welding it up.
Does that kind of mod really need an engineers certificate?

Update 31
Well 31 updates later the... bodywork... is... complete!
The following are a lot of pics from all over the car at its current stage.
Now I owe a small amount to O&S for the most recent invoice and because I am carefully monitoring my funds, I want to pay it off over the next few weeks so that I at least have money coming in at the same time and can balance things out. But because the next stage is primer and highfill which should be done sooner rather than later to protect the metal, I will get O&S to complete that work and then there will be a short hiatus so that I can pay off the invoices.
At this stage I'd mainly like to say the most MASSIVE thanks to O&S Sportscar Restoration for the most spectacular work I have seen as well as the best customer experience I have ever had. They really do treat you like family.
Now on with the pics!
Oppressa ·
Update 32
And paint prep has started!!! Yes the basecoat is black (ooooh...). Work has only been done on the bonnet and fenders for now. The body is now on a mobile trolley as well so hopefully it will be in the booth next week for primer etc.
Not many weeks now before paint, guys! :o
hrastovica ·
Cant wait to see what colour you will be goin...
Oppressa ·
Update 33
Just continuing with the paint prep. Still rubbing back and blocking (the first of 2, maybe 3 times it's done) The body and chassis are ready to go into the booth to have the same done.
Apologies for average photos this week, my usual camera was unavailable!
I couldn't resist popping one of the gauges in! 😀
Bonnet goodness

Update 34
Paint prep started on the body. Work slowed a bit because I have set a weekly $ cap for the moment but still nice to see progress 😀
Just some shots comparing the same area as repairs were done, rain gutter removed and lead-wiping then paint prep done
nils ·
Do like how far you are seeing this though, particularly after the mess around you got treated to with the body early on. good luck and i look forward to the finished product
69bug ·
Looks fantastic! Why did it rust so much looked like an ok first paint job
Oppressa ·
It was fine for 8 or so years but I didn't keep as close an eye on the panel beaters last time. I knew a lot less and I think they just used bog and a few very ordinary methods just to get to the painted result. This time I wanted to guarantee the work will last for 20-30 years.
Before you could see the paint starting to blister here and there where bad welds or rust was underneath
Oppressa ·
Update 35
More sexy paint prep 😀
vduboy ·
Hey mate, loving your work so far, really good to see it all being done properly. Anymore progress?

vduboy wrote:Hey mate, loving your work so far, really good to see it all being done properly. Anymore progress?
Hey thanks. Well yeah the post just above yours show the photos from yesterday. Passenger side was worked on this week. Going well!
Oppressa ·
Update 36
The roof has now been prepped. Pretty much the entire exterior now has the first stage of primer, highfill and blocking done. Next stage still to go when it gets sanded smooth and all done again.
Body and chassis separated again. Cleaning the chassis in preparation for the spray booth and fixing a few small things here and there
Here you can see the black base coat for my paint with white guide coat in comparison to the car on the right with standard white base coat and black guide coat 😉
Rear engine vents still to go
This is the money-shot for me from this morning. I wish I had moved the camera slightly to the left because with the rain gutter gone and the lead wiping done, this shape looks INCREDIBLE. I'm so happy with the decision to get rid of the gutters and perform the leadwiping.
Roof from the front looking back
Dash with all the masking tape gone. Looks so much cleaner and smoother with all the buttons relocated and vents/ashtray gone. Note the Riley to the left of the shot. Completed and ready to drive away! You may remember I photographed one of its panels in the paint booth a few weeks ago. The restoration can barely be faulted :o
Cleaning the interior too as that's next for the paint prep.

Update 37
Chassis time!
Primered...
Hung...
Spraying...
Stone-guarded...
And resting!
The top side... from underneath... you know what I mean
You couldn't see this from any of my previous photos so I'm showing where the cigarette lighter will go. It will be below the five buttons in the middle of the dash, nice and hidden.
Interior primered. Now any visible joints will be properly sealed. This is also the future location of some much needed Dynamat!
Paulc1964au ·
Wow it is really coming along nicely
Oppressa ·
Update 38
Bodywork - lots of time-consuming rubbing back of the body and roof. Also all joints have been sealed with Sikaflex and then brush on seam sealer.
Shots from earlier in the week showing the wheel wells now stone-guarded and the same being done to the underbody sections.
The black lines indicating seams sealed
Same area, just at a lower angle
Dust everywhere from the hi-fill rubbing
Again, seams n dust!
This will all be carpeted when complete so I have deemed the finish not very important.
Stone-guarded
Oppressa ·
Update 39
Progress continues well! Now that the body and all parts have been rubbed back once, it all happens again haha!
Fenders have been attached and body exterior has been rubbed back.
Second base coat for the doors!
Second base coat for the engine cover
And second base coat for the bonnet

Yep exactly. I intend to keep it for many decades. Someone brought their Jag back into the shop which they had restored for him 20 years ago and it looked like they had done it a few weeks ago!
And I won't have a better time in my life with very few expenses right now.

Update 40
Update 40... a memorable one... COLOUR!
The body has been bolted onto the floorpan permanently
Bonnet interior and engine bay has been painted
Doors are on for blocking/measurement
Inside of bonnet and engine lid are PAINTED! So today the colour is revealed!!!
These shots were taken earlier in the week and show the black basecoat parts such as roof, foot wells, bonnet and engine bay:
And now... the pics from today! Here we go folks!...
What's that in the background?... a tinge of colour?!
Why yes! Kameleon KF06 Gold to Silver
The rear beaver panel. After discussion with other paint shops we have decided that the panel has to be modded before all of the engine work is done and the muffler is installed. So it's going to have to be a best guess at to how much it should be raised. I'll measure and research this week
Just LOOK at those lines!
Body bolted to the floor now
Doors are coming back off, this is just measuring and checking. The inside of them will be painted first and then they will be refitted and painted while on the body. Best for kameleon
This thing is going to look mean!!!
I don't know which I like more... the lines or the bonnet in the background
A view through the door of the paint booth
Masking all the fenders to prepare them for stone guarding
And some gratuitous colour shots
And what the hell, a video too!
Aussie Dubbin ·
Great work fella. Must be loving that final stage of painting where it starts to actually be laid. The pics tell a thousand words. Thanks for sharing soo much detail. I sanded my blue bug many moons ago, and got a pretty reasonable paint job too, but seeing this reminds me of the countless hours in prep!!!!!!!!!
Should be a valuable car based on the body and prep work alone

Those shiny colours will look AWESOME on a bug. The rounded lines always look good in metalics, and with no gutters etc. yours will look even better I reckon.

Hey, see Update 2 which was about the 5th or 6th post, first page. I uploaded the full invoice. Note that is US $.
Also went back through old emails and found:
How many carburettors and which brand/model/size? We normally build them with a pair of 35mm solex
What alternator brand/model/size? We build them with an AC 60 amp alternator
What cam/size? Normally with our C35 Scat cam
simohagz ·
Thanks for that. Sorry for all the questions!
From the look of it I assume its running a stock style ignition system?
Also from your earlier posts I gather that you bought the headers/muffler seperately (which by the way looks awesome)
Is there anything else you needed to buy or is it ready to bolt up to your trans?
Looks like you got smashed on customs fees on the gearbox, was it a similar situation with the engine? So far its looking like you got a sweet deal!
Oppressa ·
Yeah the headers and muffler I'm excited about!
Your questions about bolting together will be answered in about a month after I'm well into the mechanical stage!
Yeah the transmission customs fees were shocking. DB Shencker was the shipper and it all cost a bomb (not the shipping but using them to get the shipment out of the airport and onto Australian soil)!
The engine via sea shipping was much cheaper (relatively speaking taking the size into account). Breakdown of the charge from usatoaus.com:
Shipping: 450
Duty: 224.40
GST: 474.56
Total: 1148.96
Oh and Scat's charge to ship the engine to usatoaus (in Washington) was $108.

Update 41
Some good, some bad...
Good:
-Everything is pretty much prepped for paint
-Headers and muffler positions were tested because we'll need to paint the rear beaver panel at the same time as the rest of the car. We had planned to fit all the machnics, then mod the panel after based on where the muffler protruded. I decided to mod it in a similar fashion to what I had originally done years ago, cutting some off the bottom and rounding off the corners
-Door handles pained and test fitted, they needed to be painted separately to ensure paint coverage
Bad:
-I decided that before paint, I wanted to test fit the old suspension (just because it's lieing around and I didn't want to fit the new parts yet) with one of the new wheels at the front. You guessed it, doesn't fit. So work is on hold for the moment while I source some of these and I can test fit to make sure we won't need to mod the fenders 😬 http://vwparts.aircooled.net/MAXX-STRUT-Adjustable-Lowering-Strut-Kit-71-73-SB-p/maxx-strut-kit-3-bolt.htm
I'm guessing 2 weeks before they arrive and are fitted and we can move on...
2 shots from earlier in the week
And today
The modified rear beaver panel. Not 100% complete, some areas to refine. Looking good though!
My first glimpse at how the colour change will look 😀 Flush door handles fitted
And a quick vid

if i am reading the chart right they are 16" x 7" ET 40
that is the same as a rear Porsche Boxster
The front Boxsters are 6" ET 50
Your wheel will be only 3mm less clearance inside but 23mm wider compared to the Boxster
So with the Maxx strut. Your sweet there.
But..................It will be tight on the guard.
It will depend on what tyre you are going to run.
I would be suggesting a 205 50 to try and keep it tight.
You may need to "roll" the guard.

I have a spare 17" x 7" ET 40 if you want to borrow it to do some test fits
If you look at my Members rides you will see a photo with that wheel - the black Evo Fuchs

Thanks for the input, much appreciated, Bizarre. That's what I'm thinking which is why I don't want any body/paint work continuing until we have it all tested and measured!

Thanks! I'll have another attempt once the struts arrive and let you know!
Bare in mind that Ryans Super is a 74 and has a different front end to yours, the 2 bolt like his adds 20mm track width per side and they have slightly wider guards to match.
With yours having new replacement guards you would be wise dry fitting the rims and guards before painting as they all seem to be different width aftermarket.
But if your rims are 7" et40 like Bizarre mentioned you'll have a pretty good fit depending on the tyre size you choose.
Mine is 3 bolt like yours and has German 71 Super front guards, I've got 7" et40 on it at the moment with 205 tyres and they are very close, any lower and I'd probably need to lip the guards
Oppressa ·
Hey Joel. What size rims are yours?
Joel ·
Depends on the day of the week but those ones are 17x7 et40
Oppressa ·
Update 42
So the wheels seem okay with the new front springs/struts.
I have decided that most/all of the mechanical work will be done at O & S Restorations as opposed moving back and forth. The suspension, tyres, wheels and brakes prove to be a bigger headache than I originally would have thought now that we're up to that stage.
Everything is currently on hold until a big order from CIP1 comes in which includes most backend suspension parts and as well as items needed for the drum to disc conversion.
Once those parts arrive, I'll be transporting the engine, transmissions and everything else mechanical/electrical that I have purchased to the workshop where we will lay everything out and check that we have all the parts.
I'll also have to purchase a tyre or two simply to test (then if it's okay order four more). If the tyre works with the suspension, brakes, calipers, torsion bar setting (I'm ordering one of these amongst other things https://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C26%2D501%2D200) and the torsion bar setting itself works well with the weight of the engine installed THEN we can proceed.
So a few more weeks of waiting, sorry people!
Old vs new to show the size difference. Note everything you see in the pic excluding the new parts on the floor will be replaced with brand new items. We just installed old gear to test the wheel size with the struts/springs.
Oppressa ·
Not an official update, just some news.
Still on hold while I wait for all suspension parts to arrive so that we can get it rolling (and therefore check wheels, suspension and tires) before paint.

There's more to order but I didn't want to go over the $1000 because of import charges and they have also run out of torsion adjusters.
This week the front suspension will be added (all new parts except for the lower control arms which will be restored). Hopefully soon after the rear parts will all be in stock at CIP and I can order them, fit up the rear then finally paint *sigh*
Oppressa ·
Update 43
Front suspension fitted, brakes are on. Two types of tyres have been fitted to two of the wheels so we can test size and fitment. Pics of the tyres and wheels will come next week. All parts that I have purchased have been taken to O & S Sportscar Restoration including new engine and transmission.
One issue we have discovered is that the wiring loom I purchased is for a left hand drive. Discussing if it's better to get one made from scratch in Australia or alter the one I have. O & S their altering costs will be more than buying new anyway.
More parts on the way. Candy for now:
Lower control arms are the only parts at the front that are not new, they have been sandblasted and painted
Oppressa ·
Update 44
Tyres and wheels have been fitted and tested. I'll be honest and say I was disappointed when the tyre guys rolled out my rims with the tyres on. The wheels looked small and the rubber too tall. But once fitted on the car I'm very pleased! I could have gone 17s but it just would have caused issues because they would have been 7.5" wide instead of 7.
It was between these two tyres:
Toyo 195/50/16
GT 205/45/16
In the pics below, the 195 is on the front. I would have preferred to use the 205 (for obvious visual reasons) but clearance from the springs would have been too fine so I'm buying 4 more Toyos this week (because I bought 5 of the Dub wheels). Turning circle is 100% too which is a relief. I was worried it would have to be restricted.
First lot of pics are from earlier this week when we were trialling both tyres. Obviously there is no weight in the car hence the stance, particularly at the rear! Second lot is from today with the 205 removed so I can return it for a refund. Plan from now is: finish building the rear suspension this week. Then into the paint booth the week after!
On another note, after reading my thread, 3 Aussieveedubbers.com forum members are taking their rides to O & S Sportscar Restoration (2 are already there). Drumming up business! It's so good to see a quality restorer on the Sydney scene. They should change their name to O & S VW Restoration!
Centre cap not fitted but they look sweet with them attached!
Today:
Looks HOT from this angle! So happy with the shaved handles, wheels and removed rain gutter.
SuperOwen ·
Nice wheels, a bit like 16" boxster 5 spokes but chromed. The boxsters always look good so they should be fine.
Bizarre ·
Tyres look great to me. Just the right amount of width to give some rim protection.
Are you painting inside the bonnet area?
The black looks good.
Oppressa ·
Bizarre wrote:Are you painting inside the bonnet area?

No. Getting expensive enough and yeah the black looks good (and will probably be carpeted anyway
benny_acko ·
I also had my Beetle dropped off there on Friday afternoon to have some rust attended to. On Saturday I swung past and spent almost an hour having a look and a chat.
I saw your late model and a 60s model there. O&S' work is impeccable - the amount of pride and attention to detail they put into their work is amazing!
Im looking forward to seeing this one finished...
hrastovica ·
That is gonna look just HOT. Love the colour.
Oppressa ·
Thanks! I've had a picture in my mind for so many years!
No update again this week. It's going into the paint booth today for masking and prep but I'll be away Fri and Sat so I'll update early/mid next week.
Oppressa ·
Update 45
You know it's an important update when I post in the middle of the week 🙂
Paint commenced on Monday. The interior and all 'edges' have been completed. Tomorrow is masking then painting the outside. Expected to complete on Friday!!!
Pictures speak one thousand words so...
Paulc1964au ·
the car is looking so impressive cant wait to see it finished
XXX-1.8T ·
Car is looking great.
The only downside are the wheels chrome blingy wheels are so 1997 🙁
A nice set of 70's BBS would make it look much better or check this out for some inspiration:
Pants = creamed
Words fail me so... pics. I'm ecstatic right now 😀
Freshly dripping clear coat!
vduboy ·
Wow! You are certainly not going to lose it in the car park! awesome stuff mate. I'd let someone else fit the windows though.. I'd be a nervous wreck trying to put it back together without scratching it... big milestone to see some colour on it.
Birdman ·
You may want to check that items, such as yor brake lines, are actually LEGAL in Australia!!!
Oh and NICE paint drips ???
Oppressa ·
Birdman wrote:Oh and NICE paint drips ???
LOL, it's clear coat, as per my post. All fixed now.
Oppressa ·
Update 47
No real changes but it's out of the paint booth. Paint looks even better if that's possible! One wheel fitted (without centre cap) which gives a good indication of a final look 😀
Progress will slow slightly for the next few weeks but electrical is next. Expect an update Sat 26th Oct.
beetleboyjeff ·
You've got to be happy with that. It looks soooo good - reminds me of a Christmas beetle. :-)
Oppressa ·
Haha yeah I'm sure it's no surprise that a lot of people are referring to it as that!
Bizarre ·
You can see the silver / gold transition now
They have done a great job.
You reckon you will be cruising before Christmas??

Cant wait to see it in the flesh......and in the sun 😵

Nope, I'm thinking February...
Oppressa ·
Update 48
Not a huge amount to report. Paint is complete including some extra parts, bonnet fitted with new chrome mounts. Engine is unpacked and steering box has been rebuilt.
New chrome hinges reflect the paint brilliantly
Tail lights, license plate cover and glovebox door have all been painted.
Sick68VW ·
Mate you reallly need to get rid of those wheels!! and put some black turbo twists would look 10 times better
Oppressa ·
Man, that's been done. I don't want anything that has been done before 😉
baghall ·
Love the colour on this, looks like a great paint job. Well done!👍👍👍
Sick68VW ·
I understand mate but that has been done back in the 90's to almost every jap car i saw and also you have to remember its a vw not a jap spec car each to the own..

Super1302 ·
Great Colour and great work. yeah, need to change the wheels, they do not do the car any Justice at all, the chrome does not suit. maybe paint. maybe.
Oppressa ·
I have had so little time lately so this is a tiny update, just 2 bad quality pics. Some body rubbers on and door handles fitted. There'll be more in about a fortnight.
XXX-1.8T ·
Sick68VW wrote:Mate you reallly need to get rid of those wheels!! and put some black turbo twists would look 10 times better
I agree Steve twists, BBS, Borbets, any wheel from Germany would look awesome on this to make it look like the ultimate German Looker.
But the owner has his heart set on these wheels🙅
Each to their own👍
Oppressa ·
They're just wheels so easy to change at a later date. I'm not going for a German look though, I want it to have a custom/modded look. Once it's on the road I'll make a decision and change to something else. At least it's now a popular stud pattern
vduboy ·
Hi mate, are there seals on the inside of the door handles? what is stopping water filling up the doors? Looking great by the way! 👍
Oppressa ·
vduboy wrote:Hi mate, are there seals on the inside of the door handles? what is stopping water filling up the doors? Looking great by the way! 👍
No there are not. I'll make this a sunny day car 😉
Oppressa ·
Update 49
Finally a proper update, I've just been too busy to get to my car!
While O & S has had to concentrate on a Mustang that the owner wants ready by Christmas, mine is really starting to piece together and it's looking great!
I need to get my original glass out, remove the tinting and have it polished. I haven't decided whether I'll have it tinted or not...
Bits and pieces of the wiring is going in as well.
The workbench with some of my parts! There are more on the shelf below as well as around my car 🙂
Lights are now fitted, HIDs will be used, ballasts will reside in the bonnet
Running boards are installed
Brand new shiny piping looks awesome
O & S will be repairing this issue with the paint (at their expense)
One of my favourite new features 😀
I'm not happy with the mounting of this handle as it's not flush enough. This will be re-welded
Two of the new gauges fitted!
Zooming in from a distance I get a really good idea of what it's going to look like on the street 😀
HerbieBoy82 ·
Looking bloody sweet!!!
Are you going cal look window rubbers or the Original ones with chrome trims in them?
Oppressa ·
No chrome other than wheels, bumpers and the badge on the bonnet. Oh, and the side mirror 🙂
Joel ·
Have you colour coded the headlight rings and indicator caps?
Oppressa ·
Don't make a liar out of me, Joel LOL. They'll be chrome too 🙂
Joel ·
They'd suit the car either way.
Oppressa ·
Haha, yeah I think the chrome on the headlights especially are a feature. But I was never a fan of the chrome strips along the side and bonnet.
Nothing against them, but I didn't want chrome overload. Don't want it to be too flashy you know 😂
Oppressa ·
Update 50
Update 50. A nice round number and it was pretty much this time 1 year ago that I put my car onto a flat bed truck to go to O & S Sportscar Restoration. With all of the bad experiences up to that point, I didn't have much confidence but couldn't be happier with the process so far! In the last week, electrical continues, headlight screws have been chromed (🤪), engine bay insulation is in place and will be used as a template for the polished steel sheet metal, steering box/seal work, alkaline dipping for fuel tank, original wiper mechanism has been repaired, sanded, epoxy primered and painted and lots of other bits and pieces (including reverse light terminal - my bug has never had reverse lights!)...
I have a dashboard!
Left to right: lights, emergency lights, show lights, 'valet' alarm button, wipers
Oppressa ·
Update 51
Apologies for the pics this (and next) week. I'm unable to make it to the workshop so am not responsible for them!
All four brakes are on
All four wheels are on
Engine bay firewall liner was measured up and the polished steel template has been cut and fitted
Oppressa ·
Update 52
-Quarter windows have been chromed, repaired, new rubber and trial fitted
-Window rails have been sandblasted, primered and painted
-Window regulators fitted
-Clutch and accelerator cables fitted
-Engine bay rubber fitted
-Transmission has been painted as it original looked a bit plain
It's great to see all wheels on!
I could finally get a decent shot of the engine bay
Before and after of the Scat Pro Street transmission

Yeah they pretty much are...!!!
Oppressa ·
Update 54
Various mechanics installed/prepped. Brake master cylinder is ready. Handbrake cable and bracket in place.
Headers and muffler fitted to see how close everything is. Adjustments still to occur
So glad I decided to lip the beaver panel! Would have pretty much been touching!
We decided to keep some original parts and reuse the old fuse box 🙂
Pedals, fuel nozel and other panels have been prepped, primered and painted
Fuel tank is ready to go in now that it has been alkaline dipped, relined, pressure tested and painted
Boozo ·
Love the colour, and the gutter removal......but those gauges, and wheels. your about 10 years to late for the chrome and digital cool era.
But each to thier own, beautiful build 👍
Oppressa ·
Hey Boozo. You're welcome to your opinion and I respect it.
I personally couldn't be happier with my choices though and can't wait to get this on the road! 😀 No update today unfortunately though!
beetleboyjeff ·
Interesting, I am not as keen on the gutter removal, but love the colour, the gauges, and the wheels. That said, even if things aren't done the way I would do it, I still really appreciate a job well done.
As you say, each to his own.
mgiles ·
The scene would be fairly boring if everyone did it the same way.
I look forward to seeing it all together and on the road 🙂
belza ·
That paint job is amazing! I know everyone has already said it. But I'm sure you're not sick of hearing it yet! 🙂
Oppressa ·
Update 55
Okay so I can now safely say that the hundreds of people over the years who have told me that you cannot respray only part of a damaged pearl/Kameleon panel is talking rubbish!
The bubble on the rear quarter panel on the driver's side has been fixed (involved rubbing back and spraying almost to where the plastic is in the shots below) - see the bubble in question HERE
Also, both doors have now been almost entirely resprayed after the alteration work was done to fix the flushness of the handles.
The results are absolutely flawless. These shots were just off the gun and it looked unreal in person.
Torsion bars have also been adjusted as the ride height was a taaaad ridiculous 🙂 They have since been raised ever so slightly so compensate for incoming glass, oil, interior, speakers, passengers, etc
Before
After
Oppressa ·
Update 56
Not a huge amount of work has been done so unfortunately not too much to show you right now guys!
Bumpers are off being chromed, glass is off being polished and tinted...
Headers have been slightly modified for a better fit. Engine tinware is also being modified to remove some of the gaps/uneveness.
The old and the new
Headers test fitted
Snug!

Update 57
Gradual progress.
Alternator fitted!
Carburetors fitted!
Exhaust modifications and fitting continue
Work on calipers, brakes and handbrake
Engine tinware fitted
Engine bay rubber seal fitted
Pedal assembly work
Test fitting J pipes, flange to come

I see this car when I go to O&S to check the progress of my Ghia and I can say that the quality of the work done is absolutley first class. The guys at O&S do not take shortcuts, yes it costs more for all the hand fabrication but when you are building your dream machine thats what you want and if it doesnt suite evreyone so what.. you are not building it to sell as you'd never recoupe your investment... keep chasing your dream, I am and hopefully I'l be able to go cruising with my ghia and this bug in the note too distant future.
simohagz ·
Agreed.
I am the owner of the Gunmetal Grey '68 under restoration at O&S and I can attest that the work is top notch.
I had been intending on doing a project log similar but time constraints have meant I now have a MASSIVE backlog of photos/work done to share at some point in the near future.
Alan, the ghia looks great. Love the headlights.

Haha, I wouldn't say that, my gearbox is still sitting in pieces and no work on the electricals yet!
I just came back from visiting the workshop, stoked with how my engine turned out, looks "stealth" in keeping with the overall build.
Cant wait until it is finished!
With the dynamite, turned out cheapest to get it from Ryda online. That is assuming you want the genuine Dynamat branded stuff. I got 2 of the bulk packs and as you probably saw, the boys have put it EVERYWHERE! Hopefully it quietens down my little engine in the back a little...
Oppressa ·
Update 58
So I've been sick with shingles hence the lack of any updates (pro tip: don't get shingles. ever). Anyway:
-Dynamat XTREME 10455 applied to firewall, sidewalls, doors and ceiling (floorpans will be done later)
-Front and rear bumpers have had some small imperfections repaired and then rechromed
-Headers, J pipes and muffler have been modified for best fit (including adding the missing flange to the headers)
-Bracket has been fabricated and installed to properly mount and secure the muffler. Once this was completed, the whole lot was sent to be ceramic coated (the factory job didn't look good enough 😀)
Mods done. Before ceramic coating
Ta daa!
Installed

Yes it was welded and then lead-wiped where the gutter was removed

I think that you will have to fit the tie rod ends from the bottom as those shocks sit really low and steering arms may rub on the under body
Also the bottom of the ball joints may need cutting off so it doesn't rub on the rim
Oppressa ·
Update 60
Huge amount completed, coming along at breakneck speed now:
-Manufactured front brake hoses and organise parts for fitting steering
-Assembled steering arms and damper to assess clearance for new front brake hoses. Manufactured and route new brake hoses from wheels to brake
-Steering column disassembled, blasted, primered, painted
paint
-Speedo cable fitted, speed sensor fitted
-Removed plate from oil sump, drilled 9.5mm tap thread and fit oil temperature sender for oil temp digital gauge. Tested
-Assessed type of fuel sender in tank in order to calibrate new digital fuel gauge, measured resistance from empty to full and found T1. Calibrated fuel gauge full to empty, set alarm, low fuel level at 20% and tested ok
-Assessed fitment of vehicle speed sensor. Cleaned fuse holder and relay assembly
-Test light circuit for use of new switches with old low/high beam relay, ordered 2 + 30A relays to modify electrical circuit
-Test hazard light, turn signal circuit. Not possible to work with old relay, f
Fit new relay and test operation ok
-Test wiper circuit and adopt to new switch
-Fitted exhaust and new custom bracket
-Fitted headlights
-Manufactured oil hoses outlet and inlet. Fitted oil hoses, adjusted and order parts for heat shield
-Fitted alternator belt

Update 61
There's been a big break in the build as O&S had to prepare other cars for conourse. Work picked up again this week:
-lots of wiring work
-coverplate made for fusebox and fusebox mounted
-central locking wiring and actuators being installed
-handbrake installed
-fuel tank fitted
-steering box finally installed
-heat shield around exhaust finished
It's really great to see shops still putting that level of work in, and to that end people willing to pay for that level. Hats off to you sir.
vduboy ·
Looking great dude, is that rear caliper leaking in the pic? What are you using on the floors for sound deadening? More of the same?
Finky ·
This will be an amazing car when finished
tayloredvw ·
hey mate one question i have about the central locking, when or if the battery goes dead and you have the doors locked how do you get in?
vduboy ·
You'd be able to stick a jump battery on the starter terminals to give it a bit of juice. (You can get to that from the outside of the car)
tayloredvw ·
where did you get the insulation over the j pipes and the blanket over the back of the engine?
Oppressa ·
tayloredvw wrote:hey mate one question i have about the central locking, when or if the battery goes dead and you have the doors locked how do you get in?
2nd little motorbike battery and a dual battery switch in engine compartmemnt to at least supply power if something was to go wrong. It will be charged by a VSR (Voltage Sensitivity Relay).
Oppressa ·
Update 62
-Fuel tank sensor has been put together and brackets, bolts etc have now returned from being zinc plated
-Fuel line has been run
-Voltage regulator fitted
-Reverse and other rear light cabling
-Planning has begun for the bonnet release (as this will be via remote)
-Charcoal cannister, wiper motor, fibreglass glovebox and other parts ordered
Fuel line
For the first time, I will have reverse lights *gasp*
The complete passenger side
Hot engine bay is hot (just waiting on braided hose for carburettor). Also, love the colour change of the paint on either side of this shot!
Oppressa ·
Update 63
Push to start button is in and functional.
But that's not all...
Every function can be controlled either by the remote control, SMS or bluetooth & app.
So there has been lots of concentrating on the alarm this week which has become central to most of the car. The modular relay and the rest of the wiring is now well under control.
As well as the alarm, we've been taking a closer look at the ring lights on each of the silver buttons on the dashboard which are being set up with dual duties so now I have at least some warning/notice systems:
Lights:
- Green light - will flash on turn signal and emergency lights
- Red light - will activate on engine overheat or loss of oil pressure
- Blue light - hi beam lights
- White light - Charging problem
Buttons:
- Green button - Emergency lights
- Red button - ignition on
- Blue button - show lights
- White button - bonnet release
Oppressa ·
Update 64
-Pioneer AVH-X7550BT head unit fitted and holding bracket manufactured
-Wiper assembly restored, fitted and tested, new spindles installed
-Other work involving running the cables through a custom tube through the door (more info next week)
-Fuel tank is not far away from being installed permanently
Oppressa ·
Update 65
Tiny update this week.. Work has been done but I can't show any of it because the car went back into the paint booth to fix some blemishes on the engine cover and around the passenger side windscreen/dashboard area. But because the colour looked to bloody spectacular, I had to share some shots haha

Update 66
Coming together now! Ignore the front indicators, they are for another year of Beetle, correct ones are on the way.
-Fuel tank completely installed (fitted fuel tank and all attachments, fitted rubber onto steering column, fitted all fuel tank hoses
-Bumpers attached (still needs the black strip to be applied though). I'm using the original bumper bar brackets which are nice and thick so they've been blasted, primered and painted
-Fuses assigned to various circuits
-Hazard, turn signals and horn configured. Ordering relays from Germany as the Tridon ones kept on failing
-Mirror attached
-Rear vents fitted
Not much progress due to waiting for parts to come in from the US and Germany and me trying to choose materials/colours for the interior!
-Black tape has been put onto bumper
-Fuel cap airbrushing courtesy of Wayne Harrison at Advanced Airbrush http://www.airbrush.com.au/
Look at that smile!
Anthiron ·
Beautiful. Such attention to detail!
A neoprene stubbie cooler over that oil filter will help protect it from stones underneath.
Oppressa ·
Update 69
Giggity
-Seats and interior delivered to trimmer, all of the interior has been chosen!
-The mess of cables has started to be tidied and some testing has been done on the speed sender for the digital speedometer (which is specially made in the UK by a small garage for these gauges)
-FINALLY the type of front indicators I was after have been installed. I went through 2 styles (the original 71 and then 58-62, both of which I didn't like or they didn't fit). I'm now happy with the 68-69 clear ones (with orange bulbs)
-I have purchased more dash buttons because I had issues with the current ones. Also purchased speaker cable (12ga for speakers, 10ga for sub) which will be run in over the next week or two
Oppressa ·
Update 70
-Probably a week away from installing a temporary seat and driving back and forth for testing, tuning and speedometer calibration
-Everything electrical (except audio) is now working and today the original silver buttons are being removed (as they started to have issues) and been replaced with these much more expensive but much better quality options: http://au.rs-online.com/web/p/push-button-switches/0224726/. This decision was made because the car is still in the workshop and the buttons I purchased have already been failing!
-Interior light installed, headlights, highbeams, emergency, indicators, etc. all working!
-Speaker cabling will be installed this week. There's now so much electrical cabling in my car that they cannot go in the heater tunnel with the rest of the cables so they'll be just outside of it!
-Still waiting for trimmer to do the headlining
Finky ·
Looking forward to seeing this finished!
Oppressa ·
Update 71
-New switches fitted, one of them that was sent is the wrong one, so waiting for the replacement. Can't finish wiring until that is received and the relay bracket has been completed
-Resistors installed, circuit for incandescent charging light installed
-Engine tested to stable temp
-Charcoal canister installed
-Engine cover fitted
-Fuel cap fitted
-Trimming started on the seats, waiting for the headlining still
Oppressa ·
Update 72
-Still waiting for headlining to be started. I'm told this coming week
-Assess position for impulse relays used in conjunction with momentary switches. Circuits finished
-Relays fitted to mounting rail and trial fitted
-Speakers wiring is being run
-Fibreglass (so much better than the factory cardboard) glove box permanently fitted
ian.mezz ·
that alternator looks like it has a built in regular so you just need to by pass the one under the back seat and take it out.
disregard my comment if its there for a reason 😊
as I just had a fast read of your build story and may of missed stuff 😊

Update 73
Roof lining is in and I'm very happy with it! Black roof, charcoal sides. The rest of the interior will also have this colour combination. I've taken pics with flash and without. Even though the flash makes it look brighter than it is, it's the easiest way to see details
With flash, the charcoal doesn't look this bright irl

Update 74
A few annoying items holding things up a bit:
-CIP1 shipped me the rear window rubber for a split window so I had to source a replacement
-Windscreen rubber wouldn't fit so had to re-source
-Been waiting for platers to return from holidays so they can plate the bolts to attach the bonnet
-Trimmer has been busy and hasn't been able to come in for the last 2 weeks
On the positive side though:
-My other trimmer doing the seats and door panels says that the seats will be done by the end of the month and door panels shortly after
-Rear window and windscreen are now in with perfectly fitting rubber
-Final dash button finally arrived and has been fitted
-Test fit of a random bonnet cabling shield which we will base a custom built one on. Just wanted it for size

Hi Oppressa, this is coming along really nicely.
Any chance you can help me out with some info?
Cheers

I'll get the info on the block for you. The cables run into the doors using a custom made metal pipe. I though I had a short of it but I'll find some and put them up this weekend.

Sorry I don't have the info on the fuse block but I have some shots for you on the custom tube for the cabling that was made, bent and fed through grommets:

Thanks Oppressa. Food for thought!

Update 75
-Bonnet hinges and gas struts fitted
-Door windows including quarter windows fitted. New groove felt was sourced as the ones from CIP1 weren't of very good quality
-Fuel priming pump fitted for better starting using phone/remote
-Seats and trim next to rear seats completed and returned to O&S
-Trim from the roof down to floor has had to be removed as it was too thick for the doors to close properly. Now that the seats are on site, the trimmer should be able to finish that off and get the carpet done!
Before
Retrimmed

Update 76
Some average pics this update, more and better ones coming on Saturday.
-Amp rack built and racks installed
-Carpet installed
-License plates fitted (with spacers to protect body) and rear light installed and tested
-Horn installed
-GPS receiver installed
-Radio antenna installed
-Bonnet hinges and bonnet installed
-iPod to USB cable installed through glovebox (connects iPod to head unit)
Sub amp on the left, speaker amp on the right. Enough space in the rack to change amps later if necessary. I already had these though
Now you see them...
Now you don't!
DON'T get me started on those 2 holes in the glovebox door. I overlooked them. I'm not getting them fixed at this stage. After I've enjoyed the car for a bit, I'll remove the door and get O&S to fix the holes and repaint. Not only do I want to take the car ASAP but I also need to put off some spending until after I have settled a few other expenses.
Oppressa ·
Update 77
We're so close that I could almost start listing what's LEFT to do instead of what has been done!
Not much since the last update as that was mid-week but I just wanted to get some better photos. The trimmer needs to finish off the ceiling to floor posts, finish off the bonnet interior, the rear windows need to go in, front seat needs to go in then it's test drive time. Speed sensor needs to be calibrated too.
Sadly it looks like I'll miss the VW Nationals by a week or two... [EDIT] Maybe not as it looks like it's at the end of May this year!!!
On with the pics.
Love the constant blue glow from the ignition button
So dusty!
SOME of the old/unused parts! I have a lot of brand new parts that I need to sell too...
ian.mezz ·
looking great
don't see any plastic on the inside of the doors , don't want water getting in .
Have you been for a spin yet ?????

Update 78
Back into the spray booth! There was a tiny indentation in the paint after sitting in the workshop for a few weeks so that has been fixed (which involved repainting the roof). I'm really happy that it has been done as it attracted my attention every time I looked at the car.
The bonnet also needed to be resprayed after reinforcing the locking mechanism.
Bonnet compartments and carpeting has been completed. Still waiting for interior pillars to be trimmed and rear windows to go in...
Test drive next week???...
Designing and starting the bonnet compartments
Wheel well door
Fold down doors to cover/access electrics
Carpeted
Finishing touch (bad pic but everything was covered when I saw it in the paint booth
Re-re-respray time!
All to fix this indentation!
Ahhh, perfection
Bonnet respray required after affixing more reinforcement for the locking mechanism
I am yet to see this paint in the sun when it's on my car!
nils ·
Did you fix those holes in the glove box while they were throwing paint around?
If not and you wanted to do something outside the box, I could model and 3D print a custom badge ro fit there.😀
adlbeetle66 ·
I have spent ages going through this thread, and WOW! 👍
Very well done.
I was going to ask, whats the go where the old bonnet handle used to be? http://i.imgur.com/SkJcULj.jpg
Anyhow, great work, and looking forward to more updates 👍
Oppressa ·
Cheers adl. It has been a hell of a journey.
Check the last update, that area has been reinforced (and therefore bonnet recently repainted). There's an Audi A6 boot popper on the inside for remote unlocking of the bonnet 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Great. Didn't think you'd miss it 😵
Cheers, Denver

Update 79
-Bonnet interior completed
-Bonnet fitted and adjusted. Rubber fitted and remote release tested. Emergency manual backup release installed
-Cutting and buffing
-Final engine check before test drives
-Speed and oil sensors adjusted and tested
-Still waiting for rubber parts for pillars so that trimmer can finish and then rear windows, seatbelts and seats can go in
Wheel centres on!
Cables will be routed to the engine compartment for easy jumpstarting in case of emergency

The combination of ride height, tyres profile/width, and the wheels offset/track width look really good too!
Well done, Rob.

Well don't expect an update for 1-2 months guys. I have to sort the invoices out then I'm out of the country until mid July. At that point it should be on like Donkey Kong! Just the seatbelts to sort at this point. Seeya in 2 short months!

Update 80
Oh so close.
-All glass installed
-Installed terminals in the engine compartment in case of battery failure in the future
-Failsafe installed for opening bonnet in case of system failure
-Trim work (except for door and rear side panels which will be completed by another trimmer once I drive the car to them) complete. Front and rear seats fitted
-Front and rear seatbelts installed
I need to pay one invoice then when mechanic is back from holidays there will be one or two more test drives with engine and mechanical checks inbetween. Then it's delivery day! Looks like it'll be August!
spearsy ·
I like the idea of easy access terminals. I could charge my rc car easier.
Just about there. All test drives are done and it's ready to roll! After battling with the existing alarm and not receiving any contact back from the company in the US that sold it to me, I have purchased a Viper 5906VR as well as the GPS tracking SmartStart addon.
2 way 1.5km range on the full colour remote, remote start, shock detection, GPS tracking and everything else you'd expect from a top of the range alarm.
The old one is being removed and the Viper installed. The SmartStart is unfortunately in one unit (which isn't small) meaning that I need to find somewhere to install that (imo) way too large device. Its permanent location hasn't been decided on as we'll test it in a few locations to ensure that it has satellite visibility but isn't too obvious in the cabin.
I also bought an Antigravity Batteries XP-3 jumpstart kit which is a fantastic little device with a good reputation. It's easy to keep in the glove box and it can charge laptops and phones too. Always useful in case of a flat car battery!
I also took a walkaround video. The paint always looks better when you're moving around it!
oldskoolguy ·
Looks good mate. The wiring looks...ummm, let's say, involving!
Oppressa ·
LOL yeah I know! Big tidy up needed 🙂

Update 82
Viper is installed and working and... it's also not draining the battery like the POS I had before:
The AUX function of the remote unlocks the bonnet but I didn't get a video of that.
Wheel balance on Monday, final test drive and detail on Tuesday 😀
oldskoolguy ·
👍👍
1303Steve ·
getting there well done, I believe that remote start is illegal in NSW for obvious reasons

Update 83
So before the fun first test drive videos, a few notes:
-From what we have seen, the 'Solex' carburetors attached to my engine are not Solex at all, but copies. I'm going to be taking that up with Scat. Not only that but gaskets have leaked and the bolts holding the carbies on were not even long enough so they kept coming loose and the washers were the wrong kind. Also the washer and bolt holding the degree wheel in were rubbish. The washer was actually starting to bend inwards so we made a replacement with high tensile steel. Needless to say, not happy with Scat so far
-Test drive was going swimmingly for about 30 mins until issues going up a long hill. Seemed like we were running out of fuel so pulled over, tried starting and it ran fine. Accelerated and the fuel gauge dropped! The inertia was causing the fuel in the tank not to make its way to the lines. Anyway, an emergency call and another mechanic came out with fuel. That's when the cutouts started and it took us about 20 mins to make it 3km back to the workshop. A lot of talking and a process of deduction has narrowed it down to a fuel starvation issue somewhere between the tank and the end of the fuel line. This will be worked on this week so hoping Monday is pickup day.
Anyway, I DROVE IT AND IT WAS AMAZING!
Ta daaaa! First test drive video 😀 The amount of head turning and point was unreal. It's the head-turner I was after!

Back on the road!
oldskoolguy ·
That looks great, wheels, stance, all of it - well done.
Oppressa ·
Thanks oldskoolguy
Finally received a reply back from Scat saying I can send the "Solex" carbs back for a credit and that they sold 250 engines in 2014 without issues. I emailed back asking if they meant refund or credit and whether they can address my point that they aren't actually genuine. Waiting for a reply.
Incredible feeling to be back on the road. Completely different car. Suspension is absolutely fantastic. I'm keeping revs between 2000 and 3000 for the run in and in 500km it's oil swap time. I calibrated the speedometer (initiate test run mode, drive 1km or 1 mile exactly and set the marker).
I'm going to swap the location of the tacho and speedo. The tacho is currently centered and very easy to read while the speedo is slightly behind the wheel. I'd rather have clear vision of the speedo!
Flush handle on driver's side needs to be adjusted as it's preventing the remote lock mechanism from locking. I learned very quickly how easy it is to press buttons on the Viper remote in my pocket or as I pick it up. This means it would be VERY easy to remote start the car and if it was in gear this would be a very bad thing! Luckily the remote has a button lock feature!
Everything else is functioning as well as can be expected and I'm loving the experience!

Update 84
-Door trims made up and fitted in charcoal with black speaker surrounds. The only thing missing are the inner door level surrounds. I'm still waiting for them to arrive from CIP1
-Pioneer TS-A1685S splits installed in front doors and Pioneer TS-A1605C drivers installed in the rear on either side of the bench seat.
-Pioneer TS-W311D4 sub installed in sealed enclosure in parcel area
-Ditched the two 'dinosaur' 4 channel and 2 channel amplifiers (pictured) and installed JL Audio XD700 5V2, 5 channel amplifier which is about a quarter of the size of both older amps combined (about 26cm x 18cm) and absolutely pounds. I'm extremely happy with the sound overall http://www.crutchfield.com/S-xEBYAwSC4yh/p_13698606/JL-Audio-XD700-5v2.html
I haven't snapped a pic of the new amp installed yet
-All connected with Rockford Fosgate RFI-16 RCAs, Rockford Fosgate RFFANL fuse holder and 4GA power cabling
The vinyl isn't as light as it looks in this photo!
OLD amplifiers which have since been ditched
Pioneer TS-A1605Cs
Pioneer WS-W311D4 Champion Series

Update soon. New EMPI Ultra HPMX 40mm dual carburetors are being installed this week as an upgrade to the piss-poor Solex (copies) that came with the engine.
Obligatory picture
Oppressa ·
Update 86
Installed EMPI ULTRA HPMX 40mm dual carburetors. The performance increase over the Solex is insane. I have no idea why Scat shipped the engine with them. Well I guess I do... to save money!
Some extra engineering has been done to extend the accelerator linkage, made in stainless (see pic) but everything just fits and looks great.
We're not there yet though... there's now so much fuel being dumped into the engine that there is too much backfiring. So to fix that curve, I'm ordering this distributor and ignition module (I'm still consulting with MSD).
For now though, I'm very happy with the improvement!
Oppressa ·
Just an update for everyone.
Long story short is due to some dodgy mechanical work done by a mechanic who worked on the car, I had an engine fire a few weeks back. Damage to the engine cover, body to the left of the rear window, engine bay and smoke in the interior.
It's seen as a write-off so I'm getting a payout from my insurer and because the car is over 35 years old, I get to keep it as well.
So I'm selling it. I'll update within a week or two with information in case anyone here wants to buy it as a project to get it running again or strip it for (essentially all new) parts.
adlbeetle66 ·
That's just terrible news mate 🙁What exactly caused the fire?
And what? After all this work and a beautiful car you're selling it 😢?
Oppressa ·
Forensic investigator wasn't able to pinpoint the exact cause (because he would have to strip absolutely everything to do this) but it's too coincidental that I had it running fine for a year and then 10km after getting it back from a repairer (who removed the 15 second relay on the electric pump) it catches fire on that side of the engine bay.
Camo ·
Oh shit, that would be gut wrenching for you. Sorry to hear 😢😬
I hope you had the insurance company value it and insured for that price after spending all that money.
Chin up mate, you could have been hurt which would be a lot worse.
Regards, Kev
Carl and Emily ·
Far out,..
Must be heartbreaking after all you've been through with this car.
Very sad to hear.
RIP beetle. 😢
oldskoolguy ·
That is sad mate.
As said before, at least nobody was hurt or worse.
Hopefully some good will come out of this eventually.
Oppressa ·
My car is now up for sale for someone to finish the work or strip it for pretty much all brand new parts. Despite the amount of effort and money put in, I do not want to continue with the repair process. I'll look at creating a thread just for the sale. This thread can serve as information on the car but any interested parties should feel free to get in touch with me for any more information.
The damage is confined to the engine cover, passenger side of the engine bay and body in the same area.
So far, the car has had over $100k of work done by O&S during the full restoration and over $6000 of new parts from CIP1.com as well as $275 for each of the 5 (one spare) Dub Drone 5 wheels.
