Hi,
I am looking for a complete wiring loom for my 63 bug, if anyone knows a reasonably priced site they could refer me to it would be great fully appreciated.

Just be aware any looms you buy from overseas are going to be LHD.

yeah i noticed, thanks for the heads up. I think i might just make a replacement one myself.

I can't find anything online what price would you pay for one?

Interestingly I was flicking thru a car resto mag in a waiting room the other day and found these guys www.vinwire.com.au and www.uniquewiringlooms.com.au. Haven't checked them out yet, but hope they help.

VW heritage has RHD ones but as they are hand made and use the correct colored wire they are ULTRA expensive...
about $500++

someone was making them in QLD a few years ago but also very very expensive...

Best to just replace evey wire as You go then tape them all up after You have it all fitted..

Not having a regulator isn't a problem..
just an extra wire or two... in the loom.

alternators with built in regulator has two terminals..
the screw on one has a heavy wire going straight to the battery and the push on terminal goes to the lamp in the speedo.. [generator lamp] this must be connected and must work....
I have fitted a lamp to the engine compartment to keep the alternator charging on some cars.. lol [fast fix]

alternative is cleaning ALL terminals including the fusebox and fuses and earth strap to body and earth strap to gearbox..

You can try pulling the terminal off and pushing them on a few times to clean them...

the copper gets contaminated over the years..

I found the fuses kept getting a bad connection and the fuse connector getting hot...
I would take the fuse out and push the terminals together and refit the fuse.. but it kept happening...
so I fitted a new fusebox with push in fuses..

As a side note, my wife has some stuff called "Tarn-Off" for jewellry and it works great if you dip the spade connectors in, cleans 'em up good

I'm restoring a 63 bug and i've pulled the wiring out as it looks shabby. I guess i could use it as a guide to copy another one.... anyone tried it before?

I've done heaps of full resto's and I always try and reuse/repair the og wiring. Makes me shudder to think people replace the harness with the cheap copies that don't even have the correct colours.

I had most of the wiring fixed as the previous owners stuffed around with it. Might just use the wiring i have.

where do you get the original piping or conduit from?

if u have ur original loom, they can match every last detail and also do 6-12v conversion stuff like generator to alternator, flashers instead of semaphores...

loom for my 67panel

old vs new

500 for a whole new loom make much more sense than persisting with the original....

Its not that hard...
I usually use trailer cable the 7 core stuff...
and its already in a black sheaf

Not original VW colors but 7 different colors...
I also like to USE large 6mm wire from the alternator or generator
to the battery..
and to the dash... [fuse box]
so there is no current or voltage drop...

You can run it every where , as it doesn;t hurt to have any spare wires.. You can also get 5 core trailer wire for headlamps or tail lamps..
and use one wire for an earth.. saves lots of hassles...

Tarnoff - Yes seen it advertised many years ago...
if all the original wiring is still there You could try it as it takes all the contaminants from the copper/brass connectors..
and fuse box... should make the connections good again..
