Princess. Let me tell you about Princess. She is our darling and she is a person that stands up for herself and always back up the underdog. She also have a very bubbly personality that is hard to hate. My thoughts of people that own beetles is they are all left of center and let me tell you Princess is one of them. Eg she is wanting to become a PLUMBER and she is doing a Vcat ant tafe in pluming and also her VCE. So she has her work cut out for her. She is also excelling in pluming by being well ahead of the rest of the class.......... Princess originally wanted a KOMBI but they are well out of the price range. My wife and I had made a $7000 limit for all the kids for their first car. As I done with BOOF. She holds a part time job and she is saving for extras so that she can put a personal touch to the bug. So let me tell you about BORIS yes he already has a name he got that before we got him home from hoppers crossing. 40 min drive. So far he has cost up $4000 to buy which leave me $3000 to spend.......hmmmmmmm....... anyway once we got him home I thought that I had bought a Lemon as I had to spend nearly another $1000 to get him to a reliable ride. Not bad for a roadworthy car Ha Ha . Needed new front shocks so i got some coil over shocks for him. Oil leeks like you wouldn't believe. motor had to come out and get fixed at the previous owners expense. While it was out I got them to put a new clutch in. While he was there the guys talked me into putting an electronic dizzy in. We got him home and had to take him back as it wouldn't run dizzy left loose and still had oil leaks. So as you could imagine I was So happy after that. Once we got him home again drove him for a couple of more days and a front wheel bearing let go. at this stage i was pissed. The last guy that had it only put multipurpose grease in the bearings when he put the 2inch drop axles in. So it took me about 3 days to change bearings as one was ceased on there real good. had to make up the mother of all pullers to get the drum off.so that was another job done. While it was in the drive way the master cylinder decided to shit its self. Well wasn't I impressed. So I got a new one of them.i thought that surly has to be it. But NO BORIS still had more to come. with the new master one of the front wheel cylinders shat it so off the the shop again and a few days later back on their road. At this stage i thought my god what have I bought. So I started to drive it every where to make sure it will be right. About a week into that accelerator cable snap. I was ready to push it off the cliff. Fixed that. Then it was a good stretch of nothing going wrong for about 4 weeks he started running rough............pulled the carby off and the needle and seat had fallen out [ ball bearing and spring ] fixed that and so far so good but I need to get another carby for him and I have settled on a Progressive carby for him and yet to buy. So that is the story on BORIS so far in saying all that at least it all happened when I was driving him and Princess should have a good car. Princess could see that the $$$$$$$$ was going down fast and she kept a tally of all the expenses. in her wisdom she payed us back the $$$$ so that we could spend more on painting interior on other things. SMART GIRL I HAVE THERE. Anyway enough chit chat here are some pics.
These are from the add when we bought him.
BorisBug ·
This is Princess and hopefully a life long love affair together.

This is a little private moment Princess giving BORIS his first bubble bath at his new home .......
BORIS getting ready

Well I have been privileged to see this thread on the samba, an excellent restoration going on here.
BorisBug ·
HA HA THANKS and I will be looking fawared to picking all your heads for info
h ·
👍
cool! nice story, lucky girl
so will it be shown off at Valla ?
would be nice to see the bug in the street parade
cheers
BorisBug ·
Sorry but you have lost me with the Valla I assume that it is a car show of some sort ,,,,,, I am sorry for my ignorance as i am a holden man and this is the first bug I have anything to do with so it is a huge learning curve for me. I am very interested for any shows information and were i can get good quality parts from
BorisBug ·
These are a few happy snaps of AUSTRALIA DAY........... funny a German celebrating AUSSIE day it was a good day
BorisBug ·
So know that you all know of BORIS he was sitting outside in the harsh Aussie weather and he didn't like it. He got skin cancer. Once we got him into the garage. I had a better look and this is what I have seen. Looks like a back to metal job.
some of the blisters on the roof
Going to RIP the roof with this
BorisBug ·
Princess wanted me to add this pic it is BORIS hanging with the boys at the Australia Day Cruise. Nothing like doing your own thing or stand out in a crowd.
Funny thing on that day was BORIS some how ended up the leader of the pack that day didnt matter how slow I went no one would over take. So I thought that I would stop at Portarlinton and what do you think the others did. It was a very bizzar thing. Even when I left some how I ended out in front again.I slowed right down so the boys could open thier cars up on a remote road but they were all happy to have him lead.
BorisBug ·
The tear down begins............................... Princess and myself had a bit of a dig today before she had to go to work. We got a couple of hours in and i think that she done a good job she was more that eager to get in and have a go. Not bad for the first REAL time of swinging the spanners.
This is princesses boyfriend we shall call him PRINCE .........HAHA
tar76 ·
Cool story, good to see the young ones are loving the dubs
BorisBug ·
BorisBug ·
Isn't it cute here comes the Princes in shinning armor to help out. He's a good one.
SEE I TOLD YOU ALL SHE WILL BE GETTING HER HANDS DIRTY
I thought that I would go out and have a look at what I am up against. There was a little bit of ewwwwww and a little bit of yum as I really enjoy the fabricating side of the re-beatification of cars.
I attacked a couple of spots that didn't look to bad until I got into it with the wire wheel on the grinder. There was about 3mm of bog to reveal this. I thought ok not to bad of a repair could be better.
After having a look at that side I went to have a look and attack the other side as that was sporting some bubbles and found this happy with this a original rust. Ha Ha
BorisBug ·
After seeing it it was time to get the grinder out and open him up. Just to see HOW big. The anticipation !!!!!!! this is what I found GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
BLOODY EXPANDER FOAM.
After seeing that I thought better Look futher and I am happy that. So I did get rid of that horrable repair, OMG praise the lord I did. That repair that didnt look all that bad had evil thoughts ...Ha Ha
Have to do some internal rebuild work
rickp ·
Wow you guys don't muck around.
Does princess have a color in mind?
BorisBug ·
These are some pics of the bad repair work that someone else done a few years earlier. One thing that I don't understand why not cut it out. So that it will not come back like it has. My thoughts are cut out until there is no corrosion left behind.
BorisBug ·
rickp wrote:Wow you guys don't muck around.
Does princess have a color in mind?
Yes she dose but we are going to keep this to our selves for the moment as it has changed twice. So i am going to keep it a secret as of yet. This build has been going for about 3 weeks so far
BorisBug ·
Time to attack the other side.
yuk yuk yuk Not happt took it a little more
Dam that foam
dugg it out and not to bad happy with that.
just a compair to the other side
BorisBug ·
The day Boris is starting to get naked.
Choise of tools
BIG ONE
LITTLE ONE
Started to attack the roof wow man look at all the pritty colours
Also found a few layers of bog. Why do they do that ?
I thought that I better clean up some as I go this was mainly from just the roof.
BorisBug ·
I had the door handle bit to do but all the stuff I had was to big or to abrasive to tackle it and I remembed is had these wheels from Boofs nosecone. Like the old WOG thing never through anything out or it could come in handy some day. payed off.
THET WORKED A TREAT AND WERE PERFECT SIZE
BorisBug ·
This is my yongest daughter she looked on with intrest as I done sons car and now she is doing the same with Boris. I thought well here is a good chance for her to learn and do something. She was so HAPPY. Looks like there will be another build a few years down the track.
OH and I know I should Of put glasses on her. Sorry I got caught up in the monent.
BorisBug ·
A small proud moment for DAD
BorisBug ·
We got stuck into it and I think we had good progress for 3 hours.
LOOKING A LITTLE LIKE THE PHANTOM OF THE OPRAH IN THIS PIC .... HA HA
BorisBug ·
So I had enough and the little helper came out from hidding again........ she is a good one bless her hart
This is the amount we got from just the side
BorisBug ·
In this area there was about 4mm of bog why do people DO THAT there was no real need for that much. All it needs is a little bit of hammer and dolly and a light smear of bog. Not that hard.
BorisBug ·
I did some looking around and talked to some guys. THEY ... said that this stuff DEOXIDINE 625 is the best stuff in the world and will keep rust at bay for more that a 1000 years.......HA HA......All you have to do is wipe it off with pre wipe and paint it soon after when you are ready to paint. Much easery that some other ways that I have been tolled to do. I have seen it in action and more than happy with the results it gives
LOVE THIS SHOT
BorisBug ·
I am very surprised on the condition that BORIS is in. I was expecting rust along the bottom of the boor and the panel behind the door and another spot they go is the bottom of the panel where the fuel cap is.
matberry ·
BorisBug wrote:I am very surprised on the condition that BORIS is in. I was expecting rust along the bottom of the boor and the panel behind the door and another spot they go is the bottom of the panel where the fuel cap is.
Yes I noticed that too. Good car 👍
Great write up and pics. The royals are lucky 😉
Expanda foam was a late model beetle/type 3 thing...really caused problems in those models, but you've been fairly lucky by the looks.
MISS VDUB ·
Great to see the youngest in there having a go too. Not just the safety glasses she should be wearing but you should also have a mask for her. Lead based paint is nasty stuff!
BorisBug ·
Hello again .... Myself and Princess had another small dig today and done some more paint removal. This to me is a crazy time in a build so depressing but every therapeutic at the same time if that makes any sense.
THIS AREA NEEDS SOME WORK THERE WAS ABOUT 6MM OF BOG HERE.......... AGAIN SOME EASY HAMMER AND DOLLY WORK WILL REDUCE THAT HEAPS. WHY DO THEY DO THAT
LOOKS LIKE ONE OF THE EARLIER OWNERS DROVE BY TOUCH ....HA HA
BorisBug ·
Princess and I went out and done some more today. We attacked the interior ........HA HA
Have got to love it when a girl has a go and loving it. Nothing better than learning how to swing tools either she might put some males to shame one day
We are going to rebuild this to not happy the way it has been done. Just the old stezza installer coming out in me
Once we pulled the dash pad off we decided that we will leave it off and go with the older style dash face. It looks alot cleaner
Not to bad for a couple of more hours work
MISS VDUB ·
Is Primcess her name or a nickname? What is your name?
BorisBug ·
princess is a nick name for here mine is Vido.... Im unsure if she would like here name put on here
empi ·
Nice car, looks fairly rust free (for a 30+ y.o car) Good to see that you are getting ALL of the kiddies involved, for the love of GOD remove the coil over shocks in the front, what was the OG colour of this car? it looks like bright blue at first then Martini Olive green under the dash.
BTW get some 😎 on those kiddies!!
MISS VDUB ·
Thanks Vido, but it would be kind of weird for us to be calling her Princess? A name would be great. 😏
Definitely can't stress enough the need for safety glasses and masks when rubbing back paint. Lead paint and the fumes/dust it gives off is deadly. The expanda foam in the C Panel is also toxic. Look after the girls.
pyr0 ·
Lead was never used in vws paint...I would still where a mask tho, just the paper style disposable one would do do stop the large particles.
MISS VDUB ·
Lead wiping Pyro. No paint should be stripped without wearing a mask.
Lucky Phil ·
pyr0 wrote:Lead was never used in vws paint...I would still where a mask tho, just the paper style disposable one would do do stop the large particles.
Not sure about that, Pyro.
I was told the reason they cannot match the Citrus Red on my '74 Lbug was the unavailiability of the lead based tints.
MISS VDUB ·
Yep, same deal with my 74 also. Old paint has some of the nastiest stuff in it and shouldn't be breathed in.
BorisBug ·
Thanks for all the concerns guys. I worked as a sandblaster for the past 20 year i am fully aware of the ramifications of lead paint as I did specialize in it for a few years. As for those paper masks you might as well tie a hankie around you face as they are crap. If you are going to spend money on those sort of things buy proper half face latex negative mask that had triple carbon filtration in it. The dust you see isn't the one that get you body is more than capable to remove it . Its the dust you can't see that gets you. I in no way condone the way I do things. lead although dangerous isn't as bad as they make it out to be .You have to be exposed to the stuff a great deal more and in alot more higher parts per million in an hour than I can every generate buy sanding this car back. Our bodies can expel lead unlike asbestos. As for lead wiping it isn't the lead that get you it is the fumes that the lead give off while it is heated that will get you over years of high use. MissVdub I understand were you are coming from as I use to be a OHS rep. I don't know your back ground but as for me I have been in the toxic chemical industry for the most of my working life. I have work with it and the scar tactics in the industry are good. But they talk about long and high exposure to this types of chemicals. I have far more chance of lead poisoning renovating an old house that is next to a highway. So don't forget there is a difference between long term and sort term exposer limits. In saying that yes glass and a mask and ear protection should always be prevelent weather at home or work..................... I hope I havnt stepped on any toes as I am only the new kid on the block and I am liking the way you guys are already keeping me in check 🙂 I am open to any suggestions/tips on how to do thing. As one member has already PM me with some great tips on things to do and get rid of. cheers Vido
MISS VDUB ·
^ fantastic, wonderful you understand and look forward to the seeing photos demonstrating your knowledge with the girls. You are spot on!
As for my background, feel free to look at my profile to see what I do for a living...
BorisBug ·
hi all i am playing with an idea i am after two rear guards. The ones that I am after are the earlier type beetle. I think they are off around the 67 68 or later the ones with the oval type rear lights. I am trying to do a custom tail light Assembly. The guards I have with the big lights need alot of work done to them to achieve what I am after. 1 will these guards fit our car and 2 how much is a reasonable price to pay. I would love for these to be in driving distance to me ( somewhere in Vic would be nice ha ha )
Paulc1964au ·
Well 67 and 68 are two different models, if you take a look at mine its a 69 is that what you are after?
empi ·
Any guard 68 - 71 will suffice, (bumper slots are different pre 67 and won work).
Here is my 1970 with pre 60 taillights,
BorisBug ·
yep that is the type of guard that I am after. I'm not to concerned about the bumper slots as we aren't wanting to run bumpers. Has anyone got any laying around 😀 and what is the goibg price to pay for these ?
empi ·
Call Rick at Volksrecycle in Oakley 0488 111 211 , where abouts are you?
empi ·
Ah G-Town, try Gary at Wolfsburg Automotive, 1300 310 370 might be bit closer.
TorxKiwi ·
Try Hank, across the road fron North Geelong Vets, can't miss it. I drove past on Sunday, four kombi's 1 x kharmann Gaia ..... And that was the front yard. Wolfsberg can be hellishly expensive.
BorisBug ·
GARY !!!!!!! sorry guys thanks for you help on that one i will only use him if it is an emergency and that is after a nuclear bomb has hit. Lets just say I think an ant has more has better ability to communicate and do what you ask than wolfs. There is a reason his business starts with wolves. One think I will give him he has everything.
One of the problems I had with him i asked him to fix an oil leak first time he slowed it second time made it worse third time slowed it no stereo no speedo added another oil leak and car wouldn't idle. That was after spending $890 with him. Then he asked for $560 plus part to service the car.
So I think I will try the others first. Can anyone give me a ball park figure on what they are worth PLEASE
matberry ·
Worth depends on quality and who your buying from.....anything from $50-200.......
BorisBug ·
Sounds like a fear price as the amount of work i need to do to the gaurds that I have will save me heaps of time and head aches to. All I need now is to find some now
BorisBug ·
I had a bit of a dig today I took the roof lining out WOW that was a bit of a job.Sore finger tips today ha ha. After I took it all out had a bit of a think Seeing that we are not replacing the dash pad and going the old steel look. I had a talk to Princess and we are not going to replace the roof lining as such. We are going to bring it back in time as the old ones were and only put a lining on the outer roof panel. I will put some pics up a little later so as you can understand what I am trying to achieve.
BorisBug ·
Ok here are some pics to try and show you what I am going to try and achieve
This red panel will get reupholstered and all else around will get painted the same colour as the outside of the car
This is the roof. Where the red is it will be the only part that will upholstered all else painted
This is the back part. I hope that you guys can see what I am thinking.
Paulc1964au ·
look forward to seeing your progress
BorisBug ·
Hello again I spent a couple of hours out in the shed today. Trying to re-hone my welding and fabrication skills again. So I started on a couple of small Holes. The first one took a bit to get the welder right. Once I got that right second one was a dream.
This is what I cut out first.
Made up a piece to go in and my way of holding small bits in
First hole done after burning myself on my palm and on my legs from sitting while I was welding but all good. Nothing like saying welcome back ... Ha Ha
Time to start on the second hole that was a easy welder set, clean surface piece made lets go
All done not to bad Im happy with that
BorisBug ·
hello again guys I have been a bit slack latly. Today I had about 1.5 hours to fill in before I picked up princess from TAFE. So i thought I would Go and have a look at and try to make up a rust repair pannel.
DONE SOME MORE CUTTING TO GET TO SOME GOOD METAL
MADE UP A REPLACEMENT OOPS SLIPPED A LITTLE WITH THE GRINDER
A LITTLE BIT OF PLAYING AROUND AND FITS IN NICE ALL IT NEEDS IS TO BE WELDED IN
Chipping away at it hour by hour ha ha
BorisBug ·
ok guy I HAVE BEEN REALY SLACK. Last week me and princess went and bought some bling for BORIS to try and get us motivaded to get out into the garage. We got most of the undercoat and we have settled on the colour to. We aslo bought some custom rear stop/tail lights and some custom mirrors. I hope they turn up some time this week. Anyway got home from work and got my arse into the garage to start things off again.
FIRST THING LOOK AT THE HOLE
MAKE UP A REPAIR SECTION
SWEET
CLEAN ALL AREAS TO BE WELDED
OK YOU OUT OF THE CORNER AND STOP HIDING ..... TIME TO GO TO WORK AND YOU BETTER BE NICE
BorisBug ·
TACK IT IN AND TRY TO GET THE SETTING RIGHT
FIRST LOT OF CHICKEN SHIT WELDS
GRIND THEN OFF
PUT SOME MORE SHITTIE WELDS ON
GRIND THEM OFF AND ITS DONE
A SLIGHT SMEAR OF BOG AND ALL DONE
NOT BAD FOR 2 HOURS OF WORK. TIME TO GET THIS BUILD GOING AGAIN
snitz ·
Nice work..was wondering what was happening with this build..I can highly recommend using a Zinc rich weld-through primer or copper spray on the areas where you are welding. The copper spray helps to seal off the welds on the inside in the cavity preventing further rusting..Heres a pic for your reference from my wifes beetle..looking forward to more progress..goodluck!.
BorisBug ·
Thanks for the heads up. But I am using a product that is a rust converter and protector. Also I the car will be drowned with fish oil once it is done. I have never had any problems doing it this way. But I love new Ideas what is the name of the primer that you use?
snitz ·
Its a weld through copper primer made by U-POL called WELD #2.
BorisBug ·
Things are start and stop with this build but at the moment there is a little more starting more often. Which is a good thing. Longer days and better weather make it a little easier. Anyway " BOOF" my son got a little bored one day while I was at work he had a little dig and started to rebuild the inner panels on the driver’s side rear. This was one job I wasn't looking forward to. Thanks son Ha Ha.
THERE WAR ALOT OF THIN METAL IN HERE BUT IT ALL BURNT OUT NOW
LUCKY I HAD A GOOD LOOK ON THE INSIDE. FOUND THIS BUGGER HIDDING. THIS ONLY LOOKED LIKE SURFACE RUST AT FIRST
Bizarre ·
great stuff - should be one fine bug when yer finished
BorisBug ·
Got out into the garage as Finlay got some bling that we had ordered. This next lot of photos might stir some controversy. But it is PRINCESSES car and she is putting her stamp on it. Which I like as is shows that she isn't scared to be different. I also got a little board with rust repair so I turned to try some custom stuff . Love a challenge. I got some earlier guards and started to cut them up but it didn't work so we are staying with the later guards.
MADE A BLANK UP TO COVER THAT HUGE HOLE
DID A BIT OF MEASURING AND MARKING THEN STARTED THE CUTTING
GRIND A LITTLE AND TRYGOT IT CLOSE NOW FOR THE FITTING GRIND A LITTLE AND TRY GRIND A LITTLE AND TRY GRIND A LITTLE AND TRY GRIND A LITTLE AND TRY GRIND A LITTLE AND TRY GET MY DRIFT HA HA
GOT IT IN THERE FINALY
THIS LIGHT IS A STOP TALE LIGHT
THIS RECTANGLE WAS EASY AS AND IT IS THE REVERS AND INDICATOR LIGHT. NOT BAD FOR ABOUT 1.5 HOURS OF WORK
HAD TO MAKE A FEW MODS TO THE GAURDS. MAKE A BIGGER HOLE BIGGER HA HA
ONE SIDE DONE ONE TO GO
BorisBug ·
Just have to weld this panel in and mount the lights properly and all done
annosL ·
Yup! that's different!
BorisBug ·
What can I say I had a slack attack. Time to pull the finger out if this thing is going to be on the road for March next year. Anyway spent 3 hours in the shed to fix the other side with the rust repair.Right hand side rear pillar.
This is were I left off treated the inside before I covered it in.
MAKE A PANEL UP I THOUGHT THAT I WOULD SECTION THIS OUT TO MAKE IT EASIER
SOME TRIMING AND SHAPING
TACK IN TIME
GOT THE RIGHT SHAPE
ATTACT SORRY FOR THE SHITTY WELDS BUT I LIKE PENITRATION
THINGS YOU HAVE TO DO TO GET THINGS TO SIT RIGHT HA HA
NOT TO BAD FOR THE FIRST RUN ME THINKS
BorisBug ·
Now to do the second section, fiddly thing that it was
MAKE THE LITTLE SHIT UP
THIS BUGGER TOOK A BIT TO TACK IN. HAD DIFFERENT ANGLES IN IT
INBETWEEN THE FIRST 2 TACKS HAD TO KNOCK IT DOWN
THEN THE REST
ALL DONE
RIGHT SHAPES
BorisBug ·
Back to the lights these are a bitch. I Had to stand them up some more so I had to make this bracket. The problem was to get the right angle so that the light is flush at the top and protrudes at the bottom. I think I have it right. All I need to do it box them in to try and keep the water out of the back of them. I think I have nutted that out but yet to finish it.
hope it works heaps of hours to get it to this stage ....................more thinking hours than doing hours. But I'm loving the challange
cam070 ·
Nice work there!
And nice creativity, great to see something original.
Camo ·
A lot of working going in here, well done. And I can assure you that it is all worth it, in the end.
Keep up the good work and don't stop now 😁

👍👍👍👍👍
I wish I could weld 🙁
spamwell ·
looking good guys !
BorisBug ·
Back again finding it hard to find motivation. there is something about this 41deg heat for some stupid reason I went out to the garage and did some. This was fun though mounting these cool mirrors. In the process gave an XMAS present a small work out to. THE RENIVATOR..... worked quite well to. Small progress better than none.
THE XMAS PRESENT........ THE RENIVATOOOOOOOOOR HA HA
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL MIRROR I HAD TO CUT THE THREAD OFF IT
DRILLED AND TAPPED A THREAD THOUGH IT
FOUND A BOLT TO FIT THE MIRRORS AND THE TAP
CUT IT WITH THE XMAS PRESENT
AND DONE HA HA
BorisBug ·
sorry on the double up on the pics

2 days in a row working on BORIS I must be feeling sick. Today I custom fitted some LED lights for indicators. It was some fun as there was a plan A , plan B plan C and I think it all settled on plan D. Plan D was my first plan but I thought that I would try to challenge myself in doing it the fancy way but my skills aren't up to that yet. Nor do I have the right tools for the job. I found out I love my angle grinder. She has been in my hands for about 25 years and she dose all i ask of her.
FIRST I HAD TO TRY AND MAKE A STABLE SURFACE TO WORK ON HAD SOME FOAM FOR THAT
THEN I PIANTED THE SEROUND SO I COULD DO SOME MARKING
MY STABLE TABLE REDY TO ATTACK
THIS WAS PLAN A TRY TO DRILL ALL THE HOLES. BUT I STUFFED UP AND DIDNT GET THE 21 SPACINGS RIGHT
PLAN B TRY TO MAKE HOLES BIGGER ..... THE BIT DIDNT LIKE IT HA HA
PLAN C GET THE CARBIDE TIP OUT....................WOW WASNT HE A HUNGRY LITTLE EFFFFFFFER
PLAN D GET OLD TRUSTY OUT SHE NEVER FAILS
AFTE TAKING MY TIME WITH HER AND A FLAP DISK JOB DONE AND IM HAPPY
BorisBug ·
So this is what I ended up with. Im happy and princess loves it thats the main thing.
This is a little video so that you can see the effect.
BorisBug ·
Exciting times the interior has been taken to the upholsters. This will surprise.
ian.mezz ·
your lights look pretty cool.
But depends on who checks it over for the road worthy, add on accessories should comply with your state rules.
and
when you put your door cards backon, dont forget to put the plastic on before, a lot of people forget as their cars been apart for a long time.
cam070 ·
Nifty stuff. Boris will defo be a custom bug.
Keep up the good work!
BorisBug ·
The car is still has rego and the rear lights are adr approved. Maybe not an a bug but never the less adr approved . That's why I had to stand then up as much as I can.
ian.mezz ·
cool, thats the best thing to do keep the car regoed.
The only thing left to put on the back of the car is the red reflectors.
BorisBug ·
Ahhhhhhhh great point didn't even think of that . Thank you that's why I love forums
Paulc1964au ·
looking great really enjoying this thread
tar76 ·
Loving the iron cross man...tell me when your taking orders!!!😵
h ·
good to see the work progressing along
I didn't see your girl doing the hard bits? maybe she was taking the pics 🙂
oh yeah purists are sharpening axes n knifes after seeing the tail light action 😂
wow so much work, looking forward to seeing paint soon no doubt when it's cooler yeah
cheers
keep going 👍
BorisBug ·
My daughter stripped the car helped take the paint off. She will do some of the welding and lots of the sanding for the paint. She will be doing the all important reassembled.
I love upsetting purists. But I like to keep in the era of the cars if that makes any sence . My idea for a first car is to put your stamp on it so that you enjoy it and care for it . I have never been one to be the same as the mainstream. It looks like it has rubbed of on my first two kids.
BorisBug ·
Had a bit of motivation when I got home from work today. Seeing that I have got the LED blinkers sorted. Time to delete the old horrible blinkers and have smoooooth guards.
THIS IS WHAT I STARTED WITH
MADE A PATCH UP FOR IT
LITTLE BUGGER HAD SOME SHAPE IN IT TO
TACK IT IN
LAY SOME BIRD POOP ON IT
GRIND SOME BIRD POOP OFF THIS IS WHAT WAS LEFT
It took about 2.5 hours to do both sides. Small progress but still progress
BorisBug ·
Still chipping away SLOWLY.......welded one of the rear lights in.
TACK IT IN
TRY TO FULL WELD IT HA HA ... DAM WELDER OUR MIGHT OF BEEN THE USER
COME UP NOT TO BAD
MOUNTED BOTH LIGHTS THAT WAS SOME FUN TO GET RIGHT TO BUT ALL IN ALL HAPPY WITH THE OUT COME
BorisBug ·
Hi guys /girls a bit has happened since the last time I have been on here. First I'm not going to make the dead line but it will get done. A few things have good things have happened. From me being slack I had to get surface rust off the car and get Boris into etch primer.after that the straitening begins. Oh and princes gets to use a spray gun for the first time. She done well I think.
Here she is having a dig.
BorisBug ·
This is some of the surface rust that we took off. It was a bit of a job but that is what happens when you get slack. It creates more work.
I would like to dedicate the next few pics to the ROLLING STONES.......bahahahahah
BorisBug ·
I was glad I I had to take it back again as I didn't spot these rust spots the first time only small bit they were nearly all the way through. Got them anyway.
This is what I have after I drilled them out
I'm very happy with the hood lips on this car
one of the rear guards ready to be etched
BorisBug ·
This is Boris enjoying the sun. This is where we are up to on him etch primer and some primer......
Princess having a go at it as well.
Boris acting tuff in Saturn black
That is pritty much were we are up to on him. and the straightening begins...................... don't know if I'm happy or sad. BIG job ahead of me on that.
BorisBug ·
just thought i would show you something and give some younger guys something to think about. This just goes to show you how far a a small pin whole of rust can go. So when you are repairing a pin whole think about what is going on,on the other side of the panel. Sorry about the quality of the pics.
That turns into this

Hello again. There hasn't been to much progress on the car as Princess turned the big 18. So I'm glad to get that out of the way now to get Easter out of the way to. I'm going to let the Cat out of the bag on our interior choice and car colour choice.
This car has already got people taking by people liking and hating and some not sure .How we came to these decisions on these choices was alot of talking, looking at cars and mixing different elements from lots of influences. Not just on Princess but what is going on in the world with car restorations. I hope it works.
This car is a real testament to princess as she has never followed the crowed and goes out and dose her own thing. To me this is what I have tried to install onto all my kids. Princess has accepted it fantastically. Which it shows in the way that this car hopefully will turn out. So there will be haters and there will be lovers. One thing is for sure we would like to know your thoughts.
THIS IS ABOUT THE THIRD COLOUR WE CHOSE FOR THE CAR.
THIS INTERIOR CHOICE WELL DID OUR HEADS IN BUT ONE ALL DONE WE THINK IT WILL WORK. THIS IS THE BACK SEAT WITH HEATER DUCTS

👍 cool
keep going, not too long to go 🙂

Love the work, and love that Princess will have her very own take on how she wants her bug.

Looking real good, love the seats and the heater duct holes, not sure about the tail liights but then I am an old fogie 🤓, the front indicators are cool as. 👍 Just a question slightly off topic, did you post the last 9 post all on the 25th as my pooter showes them all as being posted on the 25th, including posts by h and Jeff ? or has my computer thrown a wobbly? 😬

Hello yet again some more work has been done. BOOF has had enough. Time to get this thing doing. He and his work mate along with princess have pushed the old man aside. Ha Ha. They are trying to get me motivated and doing a good job of it to. They are taking semmi control of it now. BOOFS work mate is a gun painter and is wanting to paint the car....... might have to be a mexican stand off with that one....Ha Ha but the kid is a gun at it and I might step aside. The other night straight after thier work the cam home and got stuck into BORIS. They had a look at the roof and the best way was to give the whole roof a smear of bog if We were going to get the rounded roof straight or a nice flowing curve. The roof had way to many small dents in it to try and fix it any other way.
It was good to see that these three working together especially BOOF and PRINCESS. After all they are brother and sister. I called my wife out to have a look and we both had a feel good moment seeing them going at it.
Earlier in the day princess and I had a dig at the car as well I reworked some of the parts on the back that I wasn't happy with and got one of the sides close to straight. the boys later in the evening ran a speed file over the work that I had done. I was happy some small fixes needed but happy over all. So it ended up being a big day.
HERE IS A SMALL VIDEO OF THEM GOING AT IT
Sorry on the quality but I was cooking on the BBQ getting the dinner ready. I was a fair distance way and wanted to capture a Kodak moment of what was going on. There is another video which is longer but this is good enough for the forum to see what was going on

What a great thread to follow! Well done to Princess, yourself, BOOF and co. The work involved is amazing and the LEDS and tail-lights... wow. Its such a good thing seeing family getting caught up in the effort of making a Dub your own. Cant wait to see the final results. A really individual car for a really individual lady!👍👍

I see that you are making some progress, good job 😊

Hi to all again. what can I say i have been slack lately.( dew to that thing called work ) But the boys and the GIRL have been busy. The car isnt that far from going into final primer. They have been doing the old having a few beers in the garage thing and working on cars. It has been good to see when I come home from work at about 7.30ish . I can see a strong friendship between Boof and his coworker and a brother and sister relationship get stronger. So as a father I am proud to see that the old garage build is still Living on and the old car is doing alot more that just getting restored. Its building friendship and bonding family members with last but not least memories. Anyway rant over I had the day off and had a little dig Myself. In an attempt to brag the interior back a few years I have taken some interior sections back to steel. These will be painted the same as the exterior colour.
ONE OF THE NIGHTS THE BOYS GOING FOR IT
STILL A LONG WAY TO GO BUT NOT TO FAR ........... sorry for the bad pics
Marilyn71 ·
Hey guys any updates?
BorisBug ·
Things are a little slow as it is cold out in the shed. But all that needs to be done is boot and bonett lids and two guards. Getting them back to straight / curved is proving hard from All the last repairs. But in saying that not tooooooo much to go we just need motivation
baghall ·
Just saw this thread. I like the lights you did but they look like LEDs and thought they were very directional and would be on too much of an angle to be seen clearly. Correct me if I'm wrong though. They still look good.
Marilyn71 ·
Keep hanging in there the car will look awesome I'm sure. I agree the cold does put a bite on things!

they are directional but. They nearly stand up straight and are 10000000000000000000 times brighter than the standard lights Ha Ha. if you manage to get straight in line with the light they will burn you retina. The rear lights are adr approved so they must have been tested for Australian standards. The front indicators are the same in brightness if you can not see them you would have to be legally blind or worse.....

Great work Boris - that is going to be AWESOME!❗
BorisBug ·
Hi guys who remembers this thread........ Well least to say things have been going slow but they have been going. not to far to go either. But still a slogg. Sorry about pic quality but this is where its up to.
vw40hp ·
Getting closer. Looking good 👍
BorisBug ·
Small up date we have nearly got the interior ready for colour. But still a way off. It is getting a little exiting when you seem to be able to see colour. Some how it seems to up the ante a bit. They are small steps but still none the less still some steps.

Me and Princess did a trip to the virtual lollie shop. WOW what a place and a real easy user friendly site that was. even I could find stuff on it. If you are interested its cpi1.com. man are those prices cheap as f@#k. We bought
2 X Chrome headlight rims
2X Chrome Side air vents
2X Door handles
2X Running board hardware kits
7 Piece polished stainless steel body molding kit
2X seals for mirrors
1X 50 plastic body molding clips
2X chrome plastic window moldings
2x Crystal headlight with amber led turning signal
2 polished aluminum running boards
25 feet of white fender beading
Just over $500 in parts $200 in shipping as the running boards are long. Hope they make it here straight. they are comming from USA.
just got a few a more things to buy once they come in stock eg, rubber kits but I might sores them else wear. Loving the availability of new parts at great prices.

Lovin this resto thread, and also wanted to share this gem of a place in Australia for VW parts, I've been using them for years and they are very helpful. http://www.justkampers.com.au/
look forward to the next entries, Boris is looking great!
BorisBug ·
The problem I have with aussie stores. They say they have the stock when they dont or on back order. Which means. We will get the parts when we have a bigg number to inport. I would rather cut the middle man out and get it myself and save money and the head ache of dealing with empty promises
Pumba ·
Sounds like you have been dealing with classic.
BorisBug ·
WE HAVE SOME COLOUR WOOOOO HOOOOOOO. What you see here is a far cry from the real colour. The camera can not capture the real colour. once you see it you will understand. It is a real in your face colour but not offensive. good luck in painting the out side Couper Stratford. You just had a taste how hard this colour is to paint.
Marilyn71 ·
So great to see more happening. Colour is a good match for the seats I reckon. Look forward to more updates.
BorisBug ·
Hi guys ans Girls . Well what can I say BOOF has been a busy Boy. The last month he has been out in the garage sanding blocking sanding. Things have come a long way as you will see. It started with the bonnet WOW wasn't that a Job for him to straighten aslo the guards they were a huge job as well to bring them back to usable. ERIC his boss told me not to buy new ones as it will be a great learning curve for him. Apprentice (panel beater).
BorisBug ·
sorry for the lack of picks on that stage but it was a very nerve racking period. Heaps of hours was put into it by both Dylan ans Couper. The more fun stage was puttin the Boris in full primer.
BorisBug ·
The block back beings My favorite part this is were Dylan took off with it as I think he could see the light at the end of it
Dylan was Proud of his edges that he was getting from the work he put in.
BorisBug ·
Before they got to far The inners of the boot and bonnet had to be painted. That didn't go to well . The paint fried on us. I suppose it dosnt pay to take short cuts. So Dylan took it to work to weave his magic again and use some of the shop tools to make life easier. He thought well how about we sound deaden the panels and leave the ribbing. Not a bad idea. They came up well.
BorisBug ·
The boot had to go through the same treatment.
BorisBug ·
Once these dryed they came home to get refitted
loving it at this stage. No this is were this built becomes interesting. Everyone starts to pitch in as one I am working and two I had lossed interest in it as I have bigger things on my mind like loosing my job late July. but that's another story. Anyway somewhere Couper the young fella that was going to paint the car lost interest in it. So I asked if Eric Dylan's boss would paint it. He was more than glad to help out. WOW I owe that guy a big one.
We were on a mission Eric wanted the car by the weekend 3 days away. So everyone got motivated and helped out
We got it done minus one small panel. It looked good at this stage. This Is John Sarah's boyfriend he supplied the trailer to get it to the work shop.
Off to the workshop it went
BorisBug ·
Boris at the workshop his home for the next week
BorisBug ·
Well off to the shop it goes. All I thought was the car was getting dropped of and a quick look at by Eric. Well wasn't I wrong. The car and Dylan and John left at 8.30in the morning. I was at work wondering what Eric was picking on before it got painted. there were a few small things like a couple of pin holes but we knew that. But Eric being Eric had to tweak as he loves his work. He was very surprised on the standard the Dylan and Couper mainly Dylan got the cat to. So he through the base coat on the body to see how it would look. He turned to Dylan and said we are clearing today. They finished around 7 that night. Body done and inner wheel arches done. why stop when you are on a roll.
BorisBug ·
Some of Eric's Tweaks
These are what Eric calls his 1% ers . Things that detract the eyes. He is right though

This is Eric the next day. Sunday. A man that said he never works on a Sunday ha ha .

This is Tuesday black outs and hang the guards on

We chose White beading as apposed to standard black. So that once the interior goes in the black would be out of place. Also to try and keep the outside fresh looking. This colour amazes me. It is a solid pastle but for some strange reason it changes in different light condition as you can probably see or have picked. The colour you see here is far from it real colour. I am very proud of Dylan and Couper for the work they have done. Dylan has done most of it and he said there is a little bit of him in this car as well. Eric has done an amazing job of these two boys in passing on his knowledge and skills. A true tradesman with a talent and a love to see his apprentices become great trades persons
