Awesome Ben
modnrod ·
Seeing the angle grinder on the back of the trailer before you even have it the shed is a bit of a worry man.
Couldn't wait till you had the thing on the ground?
Didn't fit on the trailer?
"I don't need that bit"? 😀
vw54 ·
I saw Norm last feb he was just waiting

Nice that there is another drag bug on the go
matberry ·
I agree Stanley, just stirring the pot a little. I'm keen to see what Morgan cooks up.
Stanley ·
All good Mat
So give us a teaser Ben. What are the plans....mild or wild
whathaveidone ·
Still getting parts list together. Morgs has a budget to stick to and a bit of a plan. Something like mine with a raised rearend and a bigger motor. One thing he has decided on is the colour, but you'll have to wait for that!!!!!!!!!!
humpty ·
I know, I know what's going in the back...... But the secret is safe..... You guys are just gonna have to wait.
matberry ·
F'n secret squirrel business........🤖
whathaveidone ·
Not secret squirel, just not 100% sure whats going in it so no point telling the everyone then it not happening. If it was going to be a secret i wouldnt have started this post. Like i said i will keep you all posted when things happen. havent even got it off the trailer yet

Morgan started on the pan this week. Its all striped back ready to start cutting up.
humpty ·
Good to see he's got the HiVis gear on.....😘
morgan ·
Been busy removing rust
Dak-A-Tak ·
All ready over weight !
Should've bought a complete car . 🙅
whathaveidone ·
It was nearly complete when we got it!!!!😂😂😂😂
westi ·
rust means it's lightweight.love it
humpty ·
Nearly.....
morgan ·
All rust repairs done time to start the fun stuff, front beam is going up 100mm in 100mm forward 25mm back 6 degrees and will be held in place with the cage the pan bulkhead will be heading to the scrap bin, for more room and less weight.
The rear torsion housing is going up 100mm and in 150mm.
humpty ·
Flat pans in the rear?
whathaveidone ·
Nah, There Speed Holes!!!!😂
morgan ·
Alloy sheet
humpty ·
Your lovin' the 'cuttin' shit up' part of the project aren't ya Morgs? 😂

Stanley ·
Looks great....perfect place for that kind of work too
vassy66T1 ·
Yeh the facilities aren't half bad!!!
dangerous ·
Good work Morgie.
How much are you planning to lift the rear assembly?
humpty ·
dangerous wrote:How much are you planning to lift the rear assembly?
In the interest of conversation, and I don't mean to hijack your build thread Morgan.... But I have a question.
I know this is accepted practice and all, but can someone give me actual data to prove this is a good idea?
As in.... Back to back comparison as to whether 60 foot times, stability or better lights have resulted from this mod?
I have a new pan coming together for the POS in prep for the new bus trans.... I have to narrow the torsion housing, but I'm unsure if I should lift the torsion while I'm there.
whathaveidone ·
My thinking is, it gets the centre of gravity lower to the ground but with standard suspention. With swing axel there is no negitive camber so more tyre on the ground (thats why my rear is so high). Can anyone else add to that???
Today there was more choppy choppy
going
going
gone
all better now
Narrowed 6", should be ready to weld back on 4" higher by tonight
Stanley ·
Lower CG has to make it more stable and it looks good too
whathaveidone ·
That too!!!!! Top end stability
humpty ·
The reason I brought this up is that some time ago, I remember hearing that Nick Economo (sp) from Vollkomen Art said his "Junka" actually sixty foot better than his blue bug.... Both have narrowed rear suspension, but the Junka didn't have a torsion raise... He just used a trans raise.... Interesting ideas I reckon.
whathaveidone ·
other than that were they exactly identicle???? Not a good comparison if they wernt.
morgan ·
I've always wanted to do it Humpty, the PRA super street cars seem to do alright and it looks awsome
morgan ·
Thanks for your help today Ben
whathaveidone ·
damm, looks like i missed one!!!!!!
humpty ·
Yeah I know Ben.... Totally agree with you on that one.... Those cars were not exactly the same..... It's just that I'd like to not have to get into cutting up my pan, if there is other ways to do it.... I also totally agree with you Morgan... They look the shiz.... And they do run nice and straight..... Having seen many cars in the US (when I lived there many years ago) done this way, I can see they actually do work... Just wanting to see the options.... I'm wondering if dogleg spring plates and a conventional tranny lift would do the same thing?.... But then I guess the geometry will be different... The spingplate pivot point will be different, which might have an adverse effect....
Then again.... Maybe I'm over thinking all this. 🤪
As usual Morgs.... You are doing an amazing job.... And Ben is help with the heavy lifting.... 😀 Look forward to the next installment!
whathaveidone ·
He actully let me cut something today😂😂😂😂
Stop thinking and get the grinder out FFS😂😂😂
Dak-A-Tak ·
I hav'nt broken a gear box since I did mine , Dave was getting sick of changing crown wheel & pinions for me .
Last tranny broke first meeting out . I only wish I narrowed it a little now , but I pushed the wheels in as much I could , check out
in build section .
Good work guys !!
humpty ·
I just noticed the amount of the lift happening here..... For fecks sake Morgs!!!!!??? 😁
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Looking good morgie!! Looks like thirsty work watching you do the hard yards!! Lol
westi ·
good work boy's.maybe drink alittle less so it stay's straight.🤪🤪🤪🤪
whathaveidone ·
More progress pics!!!! No beer today so i took these photos and left😬😬😬
1916baja ·
This cars gonna look FAT!
whathaveidone ·
should be skinny with all the weight comming out of it!!!
Stanley ·
Is there more bracing going in?
1916baja ·
whathaveidone wrote:should be skinny with all the weight comming out of it!!!
You know what i meant.... 🤓
20bkombi ·
Looking good!!!
Is there going to be a roll cage to join to the torsion tubes or forks??
whathaveidone ·
yep. A bar under the horns going from the end to the plate where they originally were. Then tied into the cage just before the axles on top. Should have more pics in the next few days if that didnt make sense
morgan ·
The cage will tie it all together. Up 100mm and back 5mm all centered and level within 1mm and 1 degree and that was on Sunday no beers.
Pics of the 4mm plate I made and the mid mount I finished tonight and yes Westi it will be remade in alloy.
morgan ·
These are for you Westi. Speed holes.
Now stop concerning youself about my car being to heavy and start concentrating on getting yours to the start line... Zing
humpty ·
That's looking really good Morgan..... I'm so glad you doing all this prototyping for my pan.
westi ·
heavy.heavy, heavy.
getting through it though.keep it going.look great.
i take no 4 link.
matberry ·
Good work Morgs, altho way to much metal in that pedal reinforcing to be showing it off........
You and Ben keep up the good work....cut cut cut 👍👍👍

Dak-A-Tak ·
Did you narrow rear 3inch ? Have you got axles yet ?
Another mod I would look at when you redo shifter is move it backwards a little to .
Must have a plasma cutter for those brackets (cut out)
Good work guys .
whathaveidone ·
No plasma. oxy and a grinder. rear is 3" each side. and yes he has axles and a box!
humpty ·
whathaveidone wrote:No plasma. oxy and a grinder. rear is 3" each side. and yes he has axles and a box!
And skills.... 🥷
hypo-vw ·
whathaveidone wrote:My thinking is, it gets the centre of gravity lower to the ground but with standard suspension . Can anyone else add to that???
Yes Ben , we raised the rear torsion tube in Chris Boltons' turbo bug also . Chris has done 60 foot times of 1.36sec and his car is extremely stable at the top-end running 10.5's consistantly @ over 120mph . The low centre of gravity is a big advantage for stability and the rear suspension geometry a huge advantage for a swing-axle beetle at the line .
humpty ·
How far was it lifted Wayne?
SuperOwen ·
I'd actually like to see two similar cars with and with out the torsion raise measured and CoG compared. Oh wait, you do have a car to compare it to! Now you've got a nice little sunday project to find out the data for us 😀
whathaveidone ·
Chrises is 4".
morgan ·
Not going to mount the shifter till the seat and steering is in Pete I want to be as comfortable as posible.
I got these on last night, got the idea from big wiggood way to stffen up the frame forn without using an engine plate will get more gussets in smaller diameter tube.
Thanks to Rod for the molly Brad for the bending and Benny for the running around.
matberry ·
Good stuff Morgs. Makes me want to go cut up a car......n go race'n
humpty ·
I noticed that on the BigWig site too.... It looks very cool indeed.... Are you going to seam weld the frame horns too?... New fuel line up the tunnel?
Go on Mat.... You know you wanna!
morgan ·
Fuel line up the tunnel clutch and accel and maybe oil lines for dry sump.
Dak-A-Tak ·
check this build guys .Some good ideas.
What engine are you planning ?
Nice link Pete it alway looks easy when some one else is doing it.
Been a slow week for Norm got some spring plates and short axel tubes and bolted it all up and today I got started on the body, so much rust.

great work guys should be good for FEb at sydney

whathaveidone ·
Nice work man👍 wonder how this will affect the front clip???
morgan ·
The front clip hasn't even been made yet let alone mounted, stupid
whathaveidone ·
But with a 4" raised beam and 1" chanelled body thats 5"s lower. your front may be too low with no way to raise it......stuped

whathaveidone wrote:But with a 4" raised beam and 1" chanelled body thats 5"s lower. your front may be too low with no way to raise it......stuped
Hey Ben, dropping the car that much creates extra work, as I found!! My beam is mounted at stock height, I also cut the heater channels off which dropped the body almost 2" and with drop spindles I had to raise the adjusters on the beam all the way up for the front tyres not to touch the guards and have the nose about 4" or so off the ground.
Back of the car was more headaches, with the trans raised 4" and the body drop, the IDA's hit the body in a big way so all the sheetmetal under the rear window had to go!!
I keep creating more work for myself like this, probably why my build is taking so long... 🥲 Stick with it guys, looking good!

enjoying the build, looking forward to stealing some of your ideas. I have a lot of respect for a man who can cut, weld and drink beer (who said we can't multi task).
What are you planning with the front end? an alloy unit or modify the original?
Michael
20bkombi ·
Moving along nicely, what's next...Cage or front end raise??
Pic's please. 😁
morgan ·
Dont you hate when the 2nd one turns out so much beter than the 1st one that you have to make the 1st one again.
Going alloy king and link beam Michael.
Get the sills and body in position this weekend pick up molly next week to start on the cage. Not moving the beam till I have the body and front end mounted so I can get it as far forward and low as posible. Cant find the plug for my camera so sorry no photos tonight.
humpty ·
morgan wrote:Cant find the plug for my camera so sorry no photos tonight.
Damn.... I need a fix!
whathaveidone ·
I got the fun job of cutting the inner skin out today!!!
This way made it alot easier!!
Morgs finished his new lightweight sills then we started getting the body square on them.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
So how many beers were drunk to the ratio of fights between you two? LOL
westi ·
That's better. Good work boys
humpty ·
That's looking very flimsy! 😁
Sides ·
Very nice.
👍
So do we have a figure on how much removing the inner skin saved on the weight ???
morgan ·
A question for you brad and any one else who has passed ANDRA tech
Roll cage base plates The book says 6mm thick 10cm square but I'm sure I've seen them done in 3mm. I'll be mounting the base of the main hoop and front bars on the new sills, what thickness plate do I need (I would prefer 3mm)
dangerous ·
Latest book says 3mm plate ok of 9 square inches in area, that is 3" x3",
or any shape that equates to 3 square inches as long as the shortest side is no less than 45mm.
HS618 ·
morgan wrote:A question for you brad and any one else who has passed ANDRA tech

6mm on mine, plate is contoured around heater channel.
By the way, Looking great Morgan and Ben - sure to be a weapon!!
mike64 ·
Lookin good feller's, nice n lite.
Sorry don't want to get this side traked, but........ H Great Avatar 👍👍👍👍
westi ·
3mm ok.
i always do a minimum of 100mm buy 100mm.
have never had a knock back.
and realyy 6mm.it will just punch a whole clear through the floor.
allthough i would like to see you stick with the general way the car is heading,HEAVY.lol
so go the 6mm
morgan ·
Thanks Dave and Brad 3mm it is. Couple of pics of a finished sill
vw54 ·
Looks like a Turtle once its on its back its f&*ked

typethreeking ·
Lookin good Morgan, what front mould is that one?
morgan ·
Its the one that was made for shapnel by henry or for henry not sure but for something so old it is still in great condition. Still needs alot of work to get it fitting right
HS618 ·
Hi guys, just to set the record straight, Mark Calus built both the front end and mould you see here as well as Schrapnel the car during the heyday of Victorian Drag Racing. My only involvement was friendship (which still continues to this day)
I believe the mould was taken from a South African model 1966 beetle which later became Schrapnel, the drag car.
As a side note, The front end is good for a few extra inches at the finish line!!

window net. copied it off Rod's design he told me to make the top and lower bars and he will make the net to suit I'm sure and decent upholsterer can do this. Lower rod has a pin welded at one end with a nut and bolt and a small tab at the other. Sorry for the bad photos

Top is very simple, the net has enough stretch to make this work and I didnt want a big seat belt hanging down to hit my head as I get in and out. ring at the back came from bunnings (modified) Its all 1/2" molly tube.
