Standards

tar76 ·

I'm looking into doing a bit of research into the Standard range. I'm by no means a purist so i don't care if they have a bit of chrome here or there, or don't have the correct spec motor/interior etc...
Lets see your standards and their stories and see how many of these are still rolling out there.
Even if you don't have one and have a story or two or know any info, like did all the early ones come out with factory painted pin striping or was it just a dealer thing......please bare all.

tar76 ·

Did split kombis come out in a standard?

matberry ·

I cut the one I owned into a baja in the mid eighties.....😂😂

It was a '69 model. It had no exterior chrome or dash chrome, blade bumpers were fitted so the bumper mountings were model specific. Cal style no chrome window rubbers factory fitted. Hood lining was only in the roof section, no trim down the pillars or sides of the cabin. It was 6 volt but the generator was 12V diameter, starter was also odd, 12V design/appearance but actually 6V. It had a glovebox door unlike earlier standards, no fuel gauge so it had a reserve tap. Ball joint drum brake front end, swing axle rear, 1200cc engine.

A fantastic car, German built 🙂

Richie (Burelli on here) bought his '71 std a few months ago, very similar to mine but 12 volt, has the exterior chrome but none on the dash and has the body pressings for the C-pillar vents but no vents. Also 1200.

Stapled flat panel cardboard glove box were fitted to many early's and I think the front seats were made differently using offcut material.

The pinstripe on yours Tarin I believe to be factory German and certainly not common, especially to still be there.

There are no standard type 2's, most were in a way as they were basic as a commercial, it was the delux models that got the dress up gear. 1200 cc busses were produced for many years.I'm sure Phill and others can add plenty more.

tar76 ·

So you'd think there should be quite a number still floating around since they went up into the 70's?

Were Standards just in Oz?

Joel ·

Europe had the base line export models but the standard in aus was specific to here.

They made them between 62 and 67 although the 67 was renamed custom and even had the custom decklid script.
The first ones started out very basic and yes had the pin striping on the side and anything left off they could, even the steering damper.

As time went on they slowly started getting stuff back, the 64 on had the proper metal side strips and 66 on had a glovebox lid but they all had the center only section of headliner and the coles cafeteria upholstry.
There's still a few around but they can be harder to spot as nearly all of them have chrome work fitted these days.

One of my high school teachers and his wife had 64 and a 66 standard both owned from new that were both totally unmolested, cool in an ugly sort of way, they were in an article in the open road magazine back in the mid 90s.

They did start making standards again in 1970 as the cheaper base model bug when superbugs were released not long after the as the deluxe model up till 75 but the 68 on ones like Matt is talking about are the Euro 1200 pov spec bugs which were never actually sold here but there are a few imported ones.

sander288 ·

Standards were overseas but as with here I don't think the price difference was enough to entice people to have less car.

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151022877197063.424799.616892062&type=3

Theres a few photos of some standards that were at Action Day; also the bathurst bugs from 63 and 64 were standard models too mostly.

In '67 the standard model changed to the 'custom' and came out with chrome blade bumpers, chrome hubcaps & moulding, it also had a fuel gauge and a glove box lid.

if you follow the link above it has a brochure about the 'new' 1300's and shows the differences in the spec sheet

On that note club VW has some great information on their website about the standard model, not specifically but it is in the bodies of text.

The one question I have about standards is whether or not they came in the full colour range for each year or if they had their own specific austerity range of paint?

vw54 ·

Standards are very hard to find now days

Ive had 2 over the years a 63 n a 64

still have some bits from them unfortunatly they went to GOD

matberry ·

I forgot to mention the painted silver bumpers and hubcaps and the front indicator housings which on the Euro later standards were body colour.

68AutoBug ·

I can only remember white, a light green and a darkish grey which I heard called "elephant grey" lol

They did look horrible.. and a look inside was worse...
terrible material on the seats... and trim...

many had the stainless trim on the sides and running boards and chromed hubcaps fitted and bumpers once bought..

the customs didn't have chromed bumpers but stainless steel bumpers and no over riders
I can remember reading that somewhere... back then.. lol

stainless must have been cheaper than chrome??

I knew the CUSTOMs were late Joel but wasn't sure when, so that is why not many of them about and many people didn't know about them .. ..

the Custom badges aren't seen on many cars now..
probably changed to Deluxe... lol

I know the standards were slightly lighter in weight but seeing them race at bathurst... they did look terrible..
anyone who had a deluxe beetle must have cringed... lol

LEE IMHO

I've only seen one that was at the nationals years ago..
German made 67 or 68 model from memory

but the front blinkers and 1/4 windows were same color as the car and I asked the owner about them..
He said that is what colour they were originally..
it had been restored..

pics of Bathurst beetles brings back memories... lol

1303Steve ·

Hi

My 1st Beetle was a standard.

This is another standard that my wife bought me for my 30th birthday, I had to sell it when I started doing shift work, sold it with all the rally gear for $1000 including a Halda Twinmaster, I kept the lights. The car was originally built by Phil Lander aka AA003.

The standards were ideal for racing as there was less stuff to remove

Steve

sander288 ·

thanks for the pics steve, can't believe it was sold for $1000; the Halda would be worth close to that now!!

no got a glove box window and door handles and a light cover plate

or thats all i could find

58camper ·

The Clayton factory produced 19180 Standards ( Type 112) from 1963 until May 1968. The last Type 112 came off the production line in May 1968 when 1 vehicle was completed.
There was 16174 Standards produced to January 1966, 968 in 1966,1910 in 1967 and 128 vehicles in 1968.

The Standard was released on the Australian market on the 30th August 1962 and was priced at Pounds 799, a whole Pounds 100 cheaper than the De Luxe Beetle at Pounds 899 and Pounds 147 cheaper than the De Luxe with factory sun roof

The pinstripe is still hanging in there in places but may have to find a hot rod free hand striper to give the places where it has dulled out a bit of life. If you look close enough you can see some of it in this pic

vw54 wrote:no got a glove box window and door handles and a light cover plate

the light cover plate
is that what they stuck in the interior light hole??

I know they had plastic covers for the interior lamp switches..

those items would never have been sold as spare parts??

when You see what interior lights and switches cost years ago
they were really penny pinching..

That is a LOT of standards SOLD...

I never realised they were so popular..

I know its still the same car basically without the nice deluxe trimmings.. lol

Since no-one else has picked up on it, I must say that there were never stainless bumpers used from the factory as far as I'm aware.

Matt, Having worked in a VW Dealership as an apprentice in 1966, I remember that the 1300 "Custom" (standard) beetle had stainless steel bumpers

LUFTMEISTER ·

Yep aussie beetles had stainless bumpers at one stage.

matberry ·

Crikey, never knew that, I apologise Lee.... 🙂

Here is a link to a PDF of a 64 Volkswagen Australia brochure. It has a pic of 63 standard in turquoise with the pin stripe at the end of the PDF. I think 62 and 63 Aussie standards had the pin stripe and 64 was the first year with side chrome.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/64beetle_australia.php

Carl and Emily ·

Great brochure, thanks for posting.

Love the photo's.

There was a line in it talking about standards.

It says something along the lines of,...

"If you're used to driving a car with no glove box lid or windscreen washer then you won't miss them."

Classic! I'd like to see advertisers try that one today.

5lam ·

Mine is a 64 Standard. Hard to tell from the outside now, but when you look inside you realise. It already had a lot of chrome stuff on it when I got it (as I imagine most would've over the years.
No glovebox lid, no fuel gauge (just the reserve tap), no interior light (block off panels in place, and plain red seats and door trims, with white piping just around the outside edge. Oh and the basic headlining that just covers the roof skin.

Joel ·

Carl and Emily wrote:"If you're used to driving a car with no glove box lid or windscreen washer then you won't miss them."
Yeah, clean windscreens are totally overated and completely unnecessary.

Anyway heres some pics of a barnfind standard someone had for sale on here a while back, although being a 67 it's actually a Custom, you can still see the outline of the Custom badge on the decklid that has fallen off.

I saved the pics because the car is just such a time warp, a perfect example of a late unmolested standard.
You can see how some of the trim like headlight rings, indicators, handles and hubcaps were back to chrome but the smokers windows are still painted grey.

All the token standard features like stainless blade bumpers, center headliner, Coles cafeteria upholstry, no bonnet strip, no fuel gauge, non locking decklid T handle latch, non chrome strip window rubbers etc all still there.

sander288 ·

Joel those pictures are gold!!👍👍👍

I don't think I've ever seen an unmolested custom!

tar76 ·

Same hoodlining as mine ..man i'd like those bumpers, do you know where that ended up Joel?

Thanks for the pics guys..
Joel,
I couldn't remember whether the 1/4 window was painted or not... I see they were..
In Your pic they have fitted I believe an early sun visors which are connected to the rear vsion mirror mount..
You can see the roundish pressings on the roof for the later model sun visors..
I don't think many people would have liked having one sun visor..lol

Did they have a horn ring or just the flat horn bar same as later models??
maybe a painted horn ring??

I also note the bright rim around the speedo in the standard
was that normal?? just the polished aluminium??
but notice no chrome strips on the dashboard...

putting the glovebox lid on was the hardest thing to do as they came out of the dash on long arms that went thru rectangular holes in the dash..
not many people liked to cut into the dash of their beetle..lol

was the steering wheel /column etc all black
in standards?? in Customs??

did the standards have painted headlight rims ??
and painted blinker tops??

and from memory.. they had a plug where the windscreen washer nozzle went... [one of the locals still has it]

cheers

LEE

PS: I love memories.. lol just can't remember all of them.. lol

the 66-67 Aussie Beetles had the pressing for the later visors but still kept the old mirror mounted ones, although from ad below seems like even customs only had a drivers visor.

Geez, another time warp custom, who would have thought it
Looks nice and original too

68AutoBug ·

OK Final question... maybe..??

did the standards have the outside door window scraper with the aluminium bright strip as per the deluxe models ??

if so, was that a special part?? or just painted black???

Glovebox lids must have been worth a lot of money in 1963 [model year] ..lol

chrome must have been getting more expensive too???

LEE

PS: I suppose the orders were :
"OK Guys, See if You can take 100 pounds [money pounds] of gear off a beetle and see what it looks like..."
lol ??

Some pics of inside a 66? Aussie Standard I took at Valla 2010.

It should have no fuel gauge and a black steering wheel.

Hard to find interior light block off plate. Tar76's car is an early Aussie Standard and does not have a hole for this.

5lam ·

^^It shouldn't have the horn ring either.
Early standards had really plain door cards too

Burrelli wrote:Some pics of inside a 66? Aussie Standard I took at Valla 2010.
65 if the door panels are original.
64 and earlier had the plain ribbed vinyl like 5lam posted above and 66 and later had glovebox lids.

Yes, Many Germans liked the lower price of the Standard model which had cable brakes YIKES and was still 6 volt and looked like an early beetle and kept the 1200 engine
for many years..
the Germans liked the bare car at a Bare price.. lol
very plain with most things painted..

German Postal service used to use them too.

They built them using all the old left over parts
even in the mid 60s they still had 50s 36hp engines, complete with 60s fresh air heater system...

tar76 wrote:Even if you don't have one and have a story or two or know any info, like did all the early ones come out with factory painted pin striping or was it just a dealer thing......please bare all.

Here is a quote from Rod and Lloyd Davies excellent book Volkswagen in Australia about early Standard Beetles.

"Offered in three paint finishes of blue, grey or white ironically, extra effort was needed at the factory to produce these seemingly cheaper cars. In their early days, painted lines were hand crafted, where the stainless steel mouldings were fitted. This idea was eventually abandoned, due to lack of coach painters willing to endure this endless task".

58camper said the first standards were releasted 30th Aug 62 that would make them 63 models in Blue,Grey or white? So maybe a Turquoise one with a side stripe painted on is an early 64? That would make the brochure from samba I posted earlier correct.

The 63 Bathurst cars seem to be from this first batch of Standards. Here is a link to my favorite piece of footage of a Aussie early Standard Beetle. The 62 around Australia record breaking car. You can see the painted side stripe. Some one buy the footage and give it to me😂

thanks tar, i've been eyeing your off too. looks damn good.

Burrelli ·

I have seen early standards with non chrome door handles inside and out. I have only seen a couple and they were white. I don't know about blinkers and head light rims. If the first Aussie standards came out 30th Aug 1962 these would have been 63 models.

I'm not sure when turquoise cars came out latter 63 or as 64 models.

Henry did you get Feb 63 from some sort of Wolfsburg records? Wolfsburg records can only be used as a guide for Aussie cars. If you did I think your car would have built in Australia and given its number some time after that. If your car has the original speedo the date it was made is on the back of it. Your car was build after the speedo by maybe a few months.

Phil74Camper ·

Don't use Wolfsburg production dates for Australian production. The August-July model year does not apply to Australian-built VWs.

30th August 1962 is a 1962 model. ALL of 1962 is a 1962 model. The Australian 1963 model (and every 'new year' model) didn't start until the following February, once the factory workers camne back from the Xmas/New Year holidays.

GASBNR ·

No white piping on the interior trim.....I have a second interior which does??? later car I think??

Joel ·

whatnow wrote:can anyone confirm or deny if 63 standards had chromes front blinker covers, door handles and headlight rims?
It's hard to know because so many were updated over the years but when you see some of the old press photos of 63 standards they have all those chromed and just the hubcaps and bumpers painted, go figure.
Although it wouldn't have been the only occasion VWaus dressed up cars for press photos.

My teachers completly untouched 64 only had the hubcaps and bumpers and quarterwindows painted and rest was chrome.

the colour of the hubcaps and bumpers was a terrible colour from memory.. silver with a lot of black in it..?

Was told that this is a 1964 Standard Aussie built. Has glove box lid, and obviously had some carpet added at some time - but it has only half roof lining and the 1200 cc donk.

AA003 ·

It looks like a deluxe to me.

Phil74Camper ·

Both the Deluxe and Standard had 1200cc engines in 1964, so that won't give any clue. The Deluxe went to 1300cc in 1966 but the Standard stayed 1200. In 1967 both were 1300; the Standard was renamed the Custom.

As Phill says, yes it does look like a Deluxe, with most of the Deluxe's goodies added over the years. Most of the buyers of Standards would have done that, to some extent, over the years. Look at the headlining around the rear window though - you can see the painted steel so you know it was once a Standard. The engine lid is off a later model; the 1964 didn't have any badges (Deluxe or Standard).

Thanks Phil74Camper, I'll let the owner know. 👍

try pulling an interior light apart, fill the switch hole up and paint it. it might not be perfect but it better than having a light to help you see. LOL

this is the correct cover but it shouldn't be too hard to make one out of a light.
