I've just been speaking with Donna Pell re putting show results up on the vwparts.com.au website
She has mentioned that next year (2004) will be the 20th anniversary of the first Spectacular, and rather than waiting two years she is asking the VW Community if we should hold a show next August to celebrate the 20 years rather than wait until 2005.
There is a good possibility of a major sponsor for 2004 too!
Here is what will be put up!
2004 IS 20 YEARS SINCE WE STARTED THIS EVENT EVEN THOUGH IT WILL BE ONLY THE 15TH SHOW. WHEN WE STARTED IT WAS EVERY YEAR BUT GOT TOO BIG TOO ORGANISE FOR US SO WE WENT EVERY 2ND YEAR.
WE MUST DECIDE IF WE ARE GOING TO HOLD IN 2004 OR 2005. WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SOME RESPONSE FROM YOU ALL.
EMAIL US ON donna501@bigpond.com or pell1@bigpond.com
So if your interested then send a quick email off to the above addresses.

should start a poll post on the issue, that'll show what the fans want, and how many want it.
Personally I don't think it would be as big if it was yearly. The prices this year were quite high, I don't think alot of dubbers could afford it yearly. Especially Amazer 😀
Dasdubber ·
My email is already sent - that would be awesome to have valla on next year since I couldn't have my car finished in time for the one just passed!

Camping fees were $17 a site per night
$15 gate fee
this is the one I thought was exy $40 show and shine. Cost me about $80-$100 on fuel from Gold Coast in the Manx. We did the budget cook for yourself thing. 20 years is a big milestone I don't think thay can let it pass without getting together however I think thAT the show and shine should have two levels serious show sections and then light hearted, novelty style for the remainder of us. Lets face it not all dubs are show quality and many have been great reliable daily used vehicles forever. What does everyone else think???????

I'll be there for sure. I don't know how much I spent on the accom. Idon't even know if I entered the show and shine. When we fronted at the park gate we had to pay some $$ for a wrist tag.I don't know what that was for either. Maybe it was to prevent bad times and hangovers. If so it worked. I kept a record of the fuel used on the trip and one of these days I will add it up. I do know we did just under 3000kms. Bring it on again for sure next year for the 20th Anniversary. Every second year is good though to preserve its Spectacularness.
KruizinKombi ·

I ended the trip with 3500 kms on my new motor, which from memory, cost about $510 in petrol. :o

Baja Wes ·
$22 gate fee, $40 show entry, $50 sat night dinner (2 people). The show fee was the biggest shock.
I was mainly having a stab at amazer with the cost side of it. He had to pay for 2 reco'd kombi heads, which he put on a motor which later died anyway 😀
I think the 2003 Valla was slightly smaller than the 2001 valla, so I am just hoping that having it 2 yrs in a row doesn't wreck the turn-out that's all.
kombi_kid ·
hey
i think it wouldnt loose enthusiasm for it every year!!! but i reacon scrap the show and shine fee dont even have any judging just a prize for the best public voted VW of all

This has just made my day!!!.... week even...even if it doesnt happen ... i wanted to go to the one this year so badly but it wasnt an option🙁..... perhaps they should stick to every two years to bring bigger numbers.... cept next year as it the 20th aniversary.... just a thought
Grey 57 ·
Best news I've had all week. emails gone and I'm there for 2004 / 20yr cellabration. :thumb:bounce
Sure the Valla trip cost a bit with costs to get the car up to srcatch blowing out a bit, but what the f**k its only money and the great time I had more than offset it.
Gotta say tho the $40 cost for Show and Shine was a bit of a shocker.
Peter Leonard ·
yep, it was kinda expensive.... seems like a heck of a lot of money got poured into the whole thing by us dubbers... 44 bucks wrist tags (what the?), 50 bucks dinner, 150 accomm, 40 bucks show, 40 bucks racing, 200 bucks fuel, for the outlay it could have been better organised. I also overheard talk of charging for the showbags (with maps, and event listings and LOTSA ads) on top of it all, and making them out of cotton.
it also would have been nice to receive a map via e'mail upon booking. so we didn't have to form a slow moving tweedledum convoy in the backstreets of nambucca searching for the venue... 😀 @ wes
and yet my e-mail's sent. 😀
KruizinKombi ·
I think it would be ok if they have it next year to mark the 20th anniversary, then revert to every two years.
I've asked Donna to book me a couple of campsites, should they decide to go ahead next year. :thumb

I agree with Wes, I dont think this year was as good as 2001, but I think that Valla should be next year to celebrate the 20th Anniversary, then perhaps it could go back to every two years and be held again in 2006.

Seriously though I just love the place. I think the numbers were a little down this year. Who cares. I knew more people this year. I really enjoyed the BBQ, and would certainly do that again. Its not the cheapest weekend of the year but thats what tax returns and mortgage redraws are for. And I could do it cheaper but choose not to. I just need to build an engine that can last 16 hours. Or maybe even just resign to the fact that 3 tonnes is a lot of weight and VW never wanted to pull that at 110kms/hr.
HotRodMatt ·
Was that $40 to view the show or to enter?
I know she was short on sponsors but if that's the price to view then it's better off not being held!

Well it only cost Me a Gold coin each time We drove into Valla in a Lancer, but others I know (in a VW) paid around $22 to get in ... it should be a GOLD Coin to enter Valla... thats all I have ever paid - in a Non VW.... I don't know what the $22 was for.... Friends who paid it, only went for a look too..... and the $40 to enter the show is a bit stiff.... a trophy isn't all that expensive to buy... and then there is the Major Sponsor... what is their money used for??

The wrist band was for entry to the show, swap meet, festivities.
The money you pay for accomodation is for your bed.
The money you pay for dinner is for your food.
The money you paid on sunday was to have your car judged.
The money you pay for a swapmeet site was for a patch of ground where you presumably make money. call it rent.
Its the same as when you go to the Nationals. Nothing is free! It shouldnt be.
It costs money to book the park. Insurance. trophies. Somebody has to pay. I dont think Donna is getting rich off your back. She is still driving the same car she has had for many years. Get over it.
amazer ·
That weekend will probably cost me about $4000 by the time I finally get my kombi back on the road. I aint whinging.
Has anyone seen my dummy? I'm sure I spat it around here somewhere.
[Edited on 19-8-2003 by amazer]
Baja Wes ·
I'm not that fussed about the money. The main reason it was a shock was because the show was no-where near that price last 2 valla's, so why the sudden hike. Same # trophies, same judges. Can't tell me it was due to insurance. If they had a lower price more people woulda entered.
The racer's all getting $10 fines at the auctions was also a bit steep. Most clubs do those sort of fines but charge like 50c. But hey, I didn't get one of those so why am I complaining?
Maybe us QLD'ers are just spoilt. Dubs by the Pubs has more vw's than Valla, enough trophies to actually seperate buggies, baja's and kit cars, peoples choice judging, a huge cruise, a swap meet, and only costs like $5 or $10 (feel proud blbvw members).

matara ·
I can settle this once and for all as I was involved with this from the start with Donna. The main reason for the price hike was down to extortionate public liability insurance costs and a main sponsor for the last few years pulling out.
Donna pulled out the stops to get the show organsed this year, and nearly had to scrap it due to the Public Liability costs. Luckily CAMS I think it was helped us get a reasonable quote, but if it wasn't for them, there would not have been a Valla 2003.
The good news is that Donna has a couple of major sponsors keen to help out after seeing how well things went this year. This may or may not affect the price on the gate next year, its all too early to tell.
Cheers
Steve

Amazer,
I sent My emil to Donna Pell and asked about the prices. I got a nice prompt reply and she is trying to get the costs of the show & shine down.
They have been using Street Machine Judges and have to pay their accomodation etc. I believe VWs should be judged by VW people... if thats possible, the costs should be able to be kept down to a "normal" level..
I will go whenever its on.... yearly etc..
Actually My Wife wants to go back for a Holiday... Its a nice place..
I love VWs - always have - always will..

Well that buggered me for 2005 as I was planning for it then as next year am off to Great Canadian Bug-In at Vancouver mid August. Have to wait till 2006, what is wrong with a coming of age 21st Valla in 2 years. Just another moaner, volma.
Mrs M ·
As you can see i am new at the VW scene but i can honestly say that if you want to go or want to do something you will find nothing is for free these days and like it was mentioned earlier you can not please everyone with costs
This year was our frist time to attend an event like that and we both had a blast.
We own 2 VW and we took down both our cars, and i think the whole weekend cost like $400.00 and neither of us went without anything

I spent somewhere between 1.5 and 2.0k$, So every second year after the big 20 next year would be good. I don't regret any of the expense. I just wish I had another $500 for the Polished Cookie Cutters with almost new tyres at the swap meet. I saw the guy who bought them and thought it was an opportunity missed. My wife however chooses to disagree!
Robo ·
I dont see that every year would kill it! if you want something bad enough you just put a bit of cash away each week to do it!
Other than my passion for VW's I also have a BMW Boxer bike I have had for 17 years, I travel almost every second week, either to VW meetings or bike runs, I just got back from a 6000 kay run (border run) just to have a beer on one night and ride straight back home again (a BMW thing) I can do this because I only drink on special occations, I gave up smoking, and I dont waste my money on take away food, or any other useless junk! I would rather save my cash so I can go on VW, or BMW odysey's, if you really want to do it dont make excuses, there are some things in life that are worth making sacrifices for, don't you think Valla is one meet that is worth it! :thumb:thumb😀

That would be pushing it!! I have been tied up with work (excuses excuses) - haven't got as much done as I'd hoped. I'll have to tee the carton up for you soon then - will you be around in the near future?
Baja Wes ·
Yeah I reckon VW people judges. Either people choice with a voting form given out at the front gate (when you get the arm band), or a couple or VW people from each club. Peoples choice always works well.
I must admit I didn't think the street machine judges knew what they were looking at most of the time. So they could only really judge if the car looked shiny and clean or not.
But that's enough whinging 🙂. I would be there whenever they hold one. Maybe I could race next year 🙂
So what about the people without internet access, how will they know there is a Valla in 2004? Some people just turn up every 2nd year, they'll be disappointed when they arrive in 2005 and no-one is there?
kOMBI KARMA ·
Advertising woud soon fix the problem.....unless your from a commune in Nimbin somewhere and are anti media.....however your bound to be speaking to someone about volkswagens that would pass on the word....Word of mouth or an advertising poster at every spare parts business would be a goer.
The rest are either in clubs or belong to this forum.
I spose theres always school newsletters and church notices lol

Good idea Wes 😀 here is an extract from the email I sent Donna a few hours ago..
" The general consensus seems to be that VW shows should be judged by VW people and not Custom Car Judges. Of course getting VW people to judge would have its own set of problems. Maybe, a suitable solution would be to get all the VW clubs around the place to nominate 1 or 2 people who are attending Valla to be judges and represent that club. This would give you a good spread of VW enthusiasts with a varied array of back grounds and taste. I also think asking the clubs to assist in the categories judged on would also improve peoples perceptions of the show and shine.
Maybe you could offer clubs the opportunity of sponsoring the event and if they did then they get to nominate 2 judges and some show categories ? "
Maybe more should suggest similiar lines if you all agree.

Baja Wes wrote:Peoples choice always works well.
Thats how VWIllawarra used to do it. You voted on your own class cos presumably that was the class where you were knowlegable. Unfortuantely it didnt work because if there were 5 cars from one club and 2 cars from the others the best car from the first club seemed to win.
I must admit I didn't think the street machine judges knew what they were looking at most of the time.
I dunno about that. they picked Jays car to bits. not a 1200. 009 distributor. Alternator. Not that it really concerns me as hard luck will be the only car show trophy I ever win. Guess I'm in with a chance if I get fiurthest travelled at a VW show in Brooome.

amazer wrote:I dunno about that. they picked Jays car to bits. not a 1200. 009 distributor. Alternator.
Well that's all nice if your trying to win best original or something. Others can verify when they looked at my car they spent more time looking at the carpet than they did looking at the engine. They had a quick look at the engine, didn't know what it was, so went elsewhere on the car. Kinda strange since I entered best engineered and they didn't look at the engineering. Rod Penrose was always gunna win that class anyway, but I expect to at least be judged.
The boys in the 4wd golf had exactly the same problem.
Dubs by the pub has everyone who goes on the cruise (like 200 people) voting for every car in every class. It seems to work quite well, although I must admit cars with shiny paint or looks cool also tend to win that style too, cos no-one looks much further than that. But hey, if that's what the people like.
Dasdubber ·
It is always nice to win an award for hard work but I guess it is just the bonus...having the comments peple make on the street each time you drive it are more worthwhile for me (but thats just me).
I think the club representatives judging may have some "conflict of interest" as you will always have that loyalty to vote for one of your own (as much as you'd like to say you are totally unbiased).
People's choice is good but as Wes and others say, shiny paint and big wheels can attract. This is a good discussion, keep the opinions coming. If only we could find some vw enthusiasts who don't belong to one particular club, who know a lot about vw's and can appreciate ingenuity, authenticism, and overall appeal.....hmmm

That would have to be the best coment you've ever made Dave, And I totaly agree with you.
I've won trophies at Valla over the last 2 events, I've evan happly handed back back trophies because people bitched unfair, Ive won trophies at the VW Nats and Iv'e also not won trophies, not once did I go to any of these events with the ambition to win anything, Its just a bonus on a good weekend.
Street Machine judges are totaly unbiast and they judge cars of all makes and models at all types of shows. Don't let politics spoil an amaizing event, enjoy it for what it is, and that is in my opinion a unique gathering.
Ask yourselves these questions, Do you go to win a trophie or to have a good time and share? If it wasn't a show as such but a gathering without prizes would you go?
I would go regardless
Cheers all

VW spectacular and the VW Nats have tried to get CLUB Judges but hey everyone wants to havea good time....
If yar dont like the judging dont enter the show...
sit back n have a :beer:beer:beer
Or three
It's a toughie. Peoples choice doesn't really work because people simply go for bright colours and trim. But there should be a people's choice award, separate to Best std/custom Paint, Best modded/restored Oval, Best modded/restored T3, Best Kombi etc
Ahem, I'll volunteer as a judge. I know a bit about VWs and I've been involved with street machiney style judging for a few years

I don't think they needed advise to realise that my car wasn't stock.
I'm not whinging here, I am just trying to have an open discussion to see what people think is the best method 🙂
I don't care if I don't win a trophy, because my car is not a show car. It gets used and used hard. I think if the car that won best offroad didn't have signs of being offroad then it shouldn't be in the class to start with.
I entered the show to put my car on display for interested people to look at, and they did, and I enjoyed talking to those people. But still, after paying $40 for show entry I expect the judges to put in some effort to look at the car.
PS - The car's that won my classes were better than my car, so I am not saying the judging didn't end up with the right result. I'm just saying if these judges cost so much money, and we could do it another way without the cost, then we should.

You are funny Wes, show me your war scares from this hard USE ???
Baja Wes ·
Bradly Bradly Bradly.
You can avoid panel damage by not driving like a retard and into a tree (can't you steer brad?) 😀
The normal wear zones will wear when used. I have heaps of stone chips, dents and scratches under the car. It used to all be painted pretty once. My front end has hit so many things it barely has any paint left. The paint is slowly getting more and more lantana scratches too. 🙁
Maybe "hard" wasn't the best word for it, but it goes more places than most buggies and baja's. You and Daz are the only people that have recently been up a hil that I haven't, but that was because I essentially had no first gear. But I have been up that hill before anyway.
And then there was the hill at Mt mee, but no-one else was silly enough to try it either. And your car broke afterwards which is probably some sort of sign 😀

Ok, here's my opinion, since my car's been mentioned...
I am very happy with coming second in my class, it WAS a stock category, and my engine isn't stock. It can't be, there's no way I can battle city traffic and freeways every day with a 1200. And I always said my car is a daily driver not a show car. So... if I can win trophies as well as have a daily driver, I'm rapt!
All Chris was saying (I think) was that the judges did seem to know what they were looking at (at least in the standard sections) cos they looked a bit horrified when they looked in my engine bay :P
Mind you - the guy who won best resto has a similar era car to mine and had a 1600 with an alternator... *shrugs* I don't know the answer. Just putting in my 2 cents.
Need to choose a different category next time maybe... best restored body maybe? was that one of them?
🙂 *waving and lookign forward to Valla 2004!!!*

Heres one for ya......If I enter the "component car" section of the show next year, how many VW bits have to be on the car to qualify?
My Spyder has a front beam, various switches, a couple of inner door handles, maybe still the front discs, will I still qualify?
😀
vw54 ·
Just put a VW sticker on the front and rear... no problems

🙂OK I've sat watching this post since it atarted, even said something earlier...but you guys are worse than a bunch of CWA women at afternoon tea...
Its really very simple....You don't have to enter anything....or go to the dinner.....or the auction.....you dont even have to stay at Valla Beach Resort.....
If you do choose to stay at Valla Beach Resort...you have to pay the camping fees which apply all year round..they are not marked up for the VW Spectacular.
If you do not go to the dinner on Saturday night, then you buy your own food, prepare & cook it yourself.
If you choose not to go to the auction then you sit around the campfire drinking and chatting about VW's with you forum buddies.
If you don't enter the show'n'shine, then you park your car over on the other side of the fence and everyone can appreciate it from there.
🙂
For those of you who have never organised a big event....is bloody hard work. & thanks to Donna & her family who organise it every 2 years. It the only event that gets people from just about every state of Australia attending....
You don't have to have a show car to show up & if you do have a show car & you choose to put it in the show...if you don't like the way it is scrutinized then talk to Donna at the time....don't hold on till 3 weeks after the event....
Graham & I had a blast. We could take our family & we met lots of mates from the forum that otherwise we would never get to meet. We also got to see some old friends that we haven't seen forever.....
All in all a fantastic event.....held by a fantastic person who goes out of her way every 2 years to get as many VW's in the one place as she can...without gaining much for herself....
This post is not having a go at anybody & there is no malice intended....😀

I agree too. But a forum is a place where open discussion can take place. Some of us are merely discussing the ins and outs of various methods of judging etc. You can't have a very good discussion about something without describing what you think are good and bad points of each.
The problem with a forum is you can't tell if someone is really bitching, or merely trying to have an open discussion. No matter how many times I say that the judges picked the right cars as winners, and that the cars that won were deserving winnings, there will be people out there thinking I am whinging. So be it.
I've had two points in this dicussion.
1 - we coulda acheived good show judging results for less cost with peoples choice, so why not go that way in the future.
2 - I don't think Valla will be as big if they hold it next year. 20 or so forum people saying "yeah I will go" does not equal a bit valla turn out. Look at the AVD BBQ, we were a minority at Valla. The prob would be getting the people that don't access AVD or clubs to even know that it's on.
Despite these points, I love Valla and would be happy to go again. :thumb
PS - I didn't say anything to Donna about the judging, because I thought the right cars won and really didn't have a problem. I only mentioned my experience because we are having a discussion
PPS - I didn't say whether any comments were or were not directed at me, so no-one get offended by anything
PPPS - have I put enough disclaimers on this post to prevent people from starting rumours about me? Probably not. You shoulda heard the weird rumours I heard when I was at Valla. :puke
Sometimes I think I shouldn't post in the first place 😀
[Edited on 25-8-2003 by Baja Wes]
Thook ·
I know Wes, I wasn't having a go at you.....promise😀
I just think that if your going to Valla then your going to Valla.....with or without the show it's still a good event....& lets face it by the time the show'n'shine comes around everybody has walked around the grounds & seen all the cars anyway.....
I just think that everyone should enjoy the event for whatever reasons they want to....
Thats all...:bounce
Baja Wes ·
I agree. Valla is cool, we love Valla.
Maybe we should start a we love Valla post. Hang-on we already have a heap of them 😀

I dont see any reason why it wouldnt be as big or bigger next year. Its a special occasion, 20years, doesnt come around every day. And I think all the positives about Valla expressed on this forum will sway a lot of the uncommited ones. Valla's not like any other car show for mine. Way less about the cars and more about socialising and relaxing compared to other shows. Probably because you are staying away from home for a couple of days.
Thook is right about the activities, doesnt matter if you do them or not, just so long as you support the event.
Pete , right on the money as always mate. :thumb
So despite the fairly hellish drive there and back from Melbourne, I will be there in 04 with out fail. Hopefully with a larger Vic contingent.
Oh a regarding the AVDS barbie, I'm sure there were more than a few who didntl come because they didnt know any one other than on the forum. I think what the more active members of the forum (me included) need to do next time is seek these ones out and drag them along.
Bring it on :thumb🙂

We are just discussing Valla & its good & Bad points Dave.... Its no good saying if You don't like it - don't come...
You are talking to - dyed in the wool -VOLKSWAGEN Lovers on this forum so don't try to stop discussions by saying
don't do this etc... if You don't like it...
We will ALL be at Valla the next time and the next etc...
if its on every year or every two years.
I believe that this year was better than the last, in the Nambucca street Parade,
many more VWs than last time, and probably more VWS parked around Valla Park itself than last time, but the Parts retailers were down and the Swap Meet varies each time... but regardless whether there is a Show & shine or not, I'll still go... Rain, Hail or shine... I'll go...
$2 or $22 to get in , I'll still go...
(and I have sorted that out with Donna.)
I like the discussions about the VW Judges, and I wouldn't mind being a judge, even though You miss out on a lot of things. I have been asked before to be a Judge at the Nationals, many years ago, but declined, as I was looking and buying, and You can't do both.
Another thing I have thought about, is the number of judges... naturally the more judges there are, the better the judging will be. IMHO...

Nambucca - Valla 2004
there should be about 9 air cooled VWs from the Upper Hunter area next year, at Nambucca Valla Park, with 16 VW enthusiasts in the Cars. I met one of the semi-locals 250kms from home at a Maccas... He had tricked Me and had driven a type 3 instead of the beetle He normally drives... there were also two other locals in beetles there.....
Now turning our attention to Jays Beetle,
if the other car ?? also had an alternator & 1600 engine.... why didn't She win....??
maybe because Her engine was dirty??
Anyway if the entry fee is only $10 next time, she can enter more than one class.. maybe "daily driver"....
Lee

Valla 2004 bring it on!!

I though I might drop this comment from a past thread in to keep the discuusion on Judging going. If we don't discuss and debat topics how are we going to improve the events/
I'm a real fan of the balls out car show and pleased to hear that many believe that have there place.
There will always be problems with judged shows like the Kombi problem at Valla (from memory the last Valla I attended in 1997(?) had a big increase in Kombis so its up to the organisers to respond to these trends).
While on Valla wasn't the entry fee $20.00 per category?
I also think that the peoples choice is a good addition or even format for a casual show however having expert judges is necessary for the bigger events. A point in case was the car of the day at Valla. Perhaps it was just me however I walked past this car several times as it did not appeal to my taste in VWs. When it was awarded car of the day I took a closer look and then saw what the judges saw.
Do you think there is a risk of good cars being over looked at 'peoples choice' events or does the law of averages kick in?
68AutoBug ·
You are probably correct with the peoples choice going to a different Car than what the judges would pick..... A Much modified car with a good paint job will probably win regardless of what the engine is like..
My Son thought it was $45 at 2001 Valla.
But it seems that $40 was correct for 2003. Many people complained about the HIGH cost of entering the show, and now Donna is hoping it can be bought down to an acceptable level so many more cars will enter next time... Lee
KruizinKombi ·
It's quite simple, just don't provide free accomodation for the judges.
Or alternatively, how do I go about becoming one of the judges? 😀
jenz58 ·
LOL Kol
We'd better be nice here or it might not be on:o
From my experience of my first ever Valla it must be a pretty big organisational task and can see why it went to every two years
Have no idea who is involved in helping with it all?
Also getting council permission for the street parade. Maybe waiting for answers from others
The power of positive thought, lets all send good vibs up ion that direction:sandrine
68AutoBug ·
KruzinKombi,
Send an email to Donna, nominating yourself to be a judge if required at the next VW Spectacular.
although I usually prefer to look at everything going on and whats for sale at the swap meet etc.... but if the need arises, I would be a judge.....
Now !! what makes a good VW??
Does it matter if the car has an Alternator or doghouse oil cooler on an early model Beetle?? 1600 in a 1200 or 1300 or 1500?
Let Me know what You guys think about these.....
I don't like normal things missing from a VW like the rubber seals around the interior door light switches... door straps etc...
How much wear & tear is allowable??
any COMMENTS APPRECIATED ... that isn't shouting, I pressed the Caps lock key accidently.... Lee
