Hi There, after trying to build a dragster last year (that's another story) I have decided to do a tube car. I have been running a 63 beetle with a quickest of 13.69sec and this is just not enough so the plan is to build a new one using the engine, box and front end with some up grades in the future. Looking round the net there are some really cool budget builds and some of these home built machines are inspiring. Over the last 3 weeks I have got it off the ground and starting to look the part. "Dummkopf" it already has a name

Thanks guys ! Going to mount the gearbox today and finish welding some of the bars that are tacked it.
Westi have you got a fibreglass front clip for sale?

Hey Ian, Wouldn't i love to have one of those!!! but definitly staying aspriated. Saying that I do need a new set of Carbs 44's or 48's (second hand if someone has a good set?)
I will be needing a couple of things to get this going, so I will put a list up and if i can buy good second hand rather than new will save me some$$
thanks
Jason
1916baja ·
My zorst and 44s will be up for sale soon mate... Gimme a buzz when you need them and I'll see where I'm at.
From these guys (This is the link that DB gave me.)
dragvw2180 ·
Really nice job ! This is one of the things that makes our sport so cool, we have alot of talented people with many skills. What you have built is VERY simular to a chassis my friend and I finished earlier this year. On my turbo race car I bent all the 4 studs and cracked the gear carrier ears off on a launch so when we built the new chassis for John we made a mount that uses all nine studs and also makes that part of the chassis ridged.
The other plate not only is our mount but ties the upper and lower chassis together and unbolts for easy trans removal. Just an idea I wanted to pass on . Mike McCarthy
FROSTY ·
Hi Mike, Was going to run the rear engine to trans plate but not fully decided yet. front plate is a good idea that i might need to redo.My box is only clamped in so its not too late to adjust. i have been trying ( best i can) copy the Rudy car on this link http://rudy-olivenca-services.skynetblogs.be/
Thanks
Jason
polak ·
Looking pretty good Frosty, good work, like the link rear on it too :P should be a sweet car when its done
FROSTY ·
As the name suggests "Dummkopf" (a stupid person) I had made a couple of mistakes that had to be fixed....steering rack upside down and when i turn the wheel to the right the wheels went left "%&#*$&^" and i had made the ladder in the rear to wide and couldn't get the 8" tyres under a stock width guard so i have been fixing those in the last week, all sorted now. had a good go with the grinder too (rust repairs) can't wait till the weekend for some more time on it.
FROSTY ·
oh and the gear change is done too

WOW!!!!
FROSTY ·
Hey Stanley, no big plans just wanting to up grade heads and some bigger piston cylinders. Carbs and exhaust are sorted thanks to Mick's upgrade. (got rid of all my Dellorto's).
FROSTY ·
quick question. the swing arm in the rear is now 55mm inboard from the normal location, should i have a spacer made up or will the axle tube be strong enough to weld a plate to, for the swing arm to be bolted too. (hope that makes sense)
spacers that are in the photo are only temporary.
dangerous ·
You might be able to make up some space using type 3 tube-ends, fitted to your tubes.
The tubes are at least 2.5mm thick from memory, so anything is possible as long as it is not heavy!!
morgan ·
Use a length of pipe that has a inside diameter same or close to the outside dia of the axel tube weld it to your axel tube to add some strength then weld your trailing arm bracket to that.
Nice work to, your body looks as rusty as mine
FROSTY ·
Thanks Morgan, shit its rusty..... most of its gone now though. i'm checking every day to see how yours is progressing too.
DavoBuggy 1641 ·

FROSTY ·
Hi Matt, I need 10 for a start. they are to mount the rear guards. I'm not sure what size?. it will be for the thickness of the steel guard only plus the weld on plate.
Thanks
jason
Stanley ·
Ian Boettcher race parts in Ipswich has a big selection. Bought some a couple of weeks ago

Got some time on the car today and mounted the front clip I bought from Ben while i was in sydney for christmas. I cut the front mount off and had to grind the fibreglass back. New mount was fabed and i used carbon fibre to stick it on (no pic). I used dzus fasteners and fabed the front mount.
All ready to get more done tomorrow but i'm out of gas and have to wait till BOC opens to get it swapped over (DOH!!) hoping they are open monday.
whathaveidone ·
Sweet. Wheel gaps look heaps better than on mine. Hope your going to paint the rest of the car to match!!!!!!

Nah its going to be Black. (not!!) I have a paint scheme already chosen and there is a real small amount of orange in it.

looks good!

Fav thread mate. Keep up the good work Frosty Car is looking great.
So are ya going mat camo paint?
FROSTY ·
Yeh Matt, not going to paint it yet. If you don't mind might leave it undercoat and fog a German cross over the top ( like your off road monster) I thought getting it on and off the trailer in the first 12 months it will get trashed.

Good stuff Frosty !!!
Big ass wing on the back, paint scheme would have to be flat aluminum, dark grey roof, German crosses and a big sharks mouth on the front.... lets go Messerschmitt style !!!

Im a bit disapointed your not keeping the orange😢
FROSTY ·
Ha ha sorry no orange Ben.
humpty ·
Sorry to bring this back to a technical chat, but I have a question about the steering rack placement.
From the image shown above, the angle of the tierods looks to be very severe... Would those sort of angles present excess bumpsteer into the setup?
FROSTY ·
Hi Humpty, I have kept the rack as close to the top beam as I could, from this the in and out movement that gives bump steer is minimised because the tie rod moves in the same plane as the trailing arm. (Hope that makes sense) this is the same position I had it in the old black car and there wasn't one bit of bump steer. I'll take a couple of more pics from the side to help explain.
Thanks
Jason
typethreeking ·
Yeah mines the same, with a short rack and longer arms works well

That looks pretty flash! I was gonna use this one, I believe it's similar to the one humpty uses... He suggested the innovate gear as its good quality and cheap.
Innovate MTX-L - Wideband O2 AFR DIGITAL Air Fuel Gauge Kit 3844 MTXL
my .02c on af - techedge, they are aussie built to http://wbo2.com/
humpty ·
Yeah I did look into the Techedge gear.... All very specie and effective, but too much hassle for me.... I didn't need yet another thing to make for my car.... And something with the potential to fail on me... I went with the Innovate DB series gear for my car.... Liked it so much I put one into my Bus too.... Looks like ill be buying another one soon for the T34 next.... Easy to set up, and very stable and accurate.... As a side note... I have heard of some people experiencing failures with the Innovate gear... Upon investigation, I discovered that all the failed installations had the gear mounted the same way.... The reader was mounted in the engine bay and/or on the engine block.... In both of my installs the reader is mounted in the cabin and they are rubber mounted.... No issues for me.
FROSTY ·
Hi Humpty, what version of the DB do you have?
Stanley ·
I have a techedge as well. Has been good as a real time read out. Data logging would be good though.
55slug ·
Stanley wrote:I have a techedge as well. Has been good as a real time read out. Data logging would be good though.
I have had mine for 6 years, never had an issue. The huge plus in my book is they are configurable - you can log RPM, TPS, MAP thermocouples (EGT etc), pretty much anything that has a voltage output (gauges etc...) This one has 1 MB of data logging... http://wbo2.com/3a1/default.htm - 600 with the display. Im no tech head, but got it all working sweetly.
Apologies for the off topic.

FROSTY wrote:Hi Humpty, what version of the DB do you have?
I'm using 3 of the Dx-16 gauges which you can program to any of thd 32 channles, with the LM-1, LMA-2, LMA-3, TC-4 And a DL-32.
I haven't used a MTXL guage but think I would rather a DB series.
You would want some sort of logging in a drag car cause you must keep focused on the track.
These are the different innovate loggers
LM-1, logs 1 channel or 6 when used with a LMA-2 (old version of LM-2) and A/F read out
LM-2, logs up to 32 channels on to a SD card when used with other MTS items or 5 on its own. And A/F read out. Single kit $ 350
DL-32 has 5 built in sensors and logs upto 32 MTS channels on a SD card, no read out. About $475
Pocket logger logs 32 MTS channels, no read out, about $90
Or a laptop straped to the passinger seat, which I have used over the years running two program's, innovate's log works and my microtech. $0
If you want to log more then just A/F you should look at the LM-2
Exelent build thred Frosty!!
humpty ·
I don't really know too much about the that one Mick.... It does look like a very good option.... The lack or LC unit is a bonus in my mind, and the extra long sensor cable is a real plus!..... But I'm with Aaron on the logging issue.... Currently I can only log with a laptop in the car.... Not possible at the track obviously, but I have been looking into other options.... One is the bluetooth logging to my iPhone or a Moto Droid device...... This guy has developed an app for the iPhone and is working on the MJLJ version currently.... http://mobisquirt.org/about/
Another option is the Race Capture Pro.... A viable possiblity that is almost in my price range.
1916baja ·
I was under the impression you could log with the mtx one??? I'm a total noob to all this a/f and data logging dealio!
humpty ·
1916baja wrote:I was under the impression you could log with the mtx one??? I'm a total noob to all this a/f and data logging dealio!
You can't log directly into the o2 reader/gauge devise... A separate pc is required.

Larry told me to contact you if I was thinking of selling it. And again nice work on the race car, i'm off to the shed.
20bkombi ·
Looks fantastic Frosty, it all came together perfect!!
Good work dude😉
FROSTY ·
King Springs called today and they were ready to pick up, week and a half early, wahoo!! wheel alignment tomorrow.
1916baja ·
👍 TNT time soon!
typethreeking ·
What pound springs did you go with frosty?
humpty ·
Nice....
FROSTY ·
500 lb
FROSTY ·
I took it out to work yesterday for a tune up and a blat round the street. At 7200rpm it sounded terrible and worked it hit the limiter, so i gave it a couple more go's then it got a rattle... bit weird... I had to change the oil, plugs and check gaps today and found the rocker shaft had broken. might have to up grade.. nah found some spares under the house..LOL
20bkombi ·
Haha cool, now put one in the race tool box too.
matberry ·
ouch, might need some better springs???
stoker ·
that to me looks like to much spring pressure on the unsupported end of the shaft
drill and tap the end of the shafts and make a bracket and bolt down to the floor of the rocker chamber
do all 4 ends because they will all break (usually in the semi-finals)
humpty ·
Solid bolt together shafts would be a good idea too...
matberry ·

I don't agree, stock shaft design can handle K800 Chev springs without issue if no valve bounce occurs. With stock adjusters I'd say Frosty is way off that high a spring pressure, hence my guess is valve bounce/float has done the damage.
modnrod ·
I rekn we should all ride over there and sit around discussing how to fix the thing over a BBQ and a beverage or 3.
My guess is either a brand new made-to-a-price part or a really good German one made in approx May 1961 (obviously on a Monday too........). 😵
FROSTY ·
Thanks Matt, three of the washers were broken, two of the wave and one of the flat ones. The two rockers on number 4 were flopping left to right really bad, I guess that didn't help either. They are HD single springs ( have no idea what lb?) but not going to spend too much more money on this motor I will be upgrading in the next 12 months anyways.
Thanks
Jason
matberry ·
Have some HD rockers made up from Blueys old engine. Berg HD shaft kit, Scat swivel feet, modified stock arms. Your welcome to borrow them mate.
FROSTY ·
9 months almost to the day and i'm finished. ( I know it will never be really finished..) I'm pretty happy with the way it has turned out, i have cut one big corner though ( no nice paint job) and now i want to get out for a TNT. I will take it back to the tech guy this week and wait till 20th July for the TNT.
matberry ·
👍
1916baja ·
Geez dude, that is so damn cool! Can't wait till the 20th!
Dasdubber ·
Stance is great mate, briefly saw it in the driveway when I was whizzing past with the fam this arvo.....had a poo-emergency with our two year old so unfortunately couldn't stop!
Looked great though, can't wait to see it on the track

Looks great mate!! What rims are you running on the rear? The ones in the pic or you have something else? Pat yourself on the back mate!! Job well done on a budget!!
grass-burnout-specialist ·
That looks tough frosty. Thats it im going to the shed!
Stanley ·
Awesome frosty....see you on the 20th
essex ·
Well done Frosty, looks great, hope to see it run.
humpty ·
Hard....
FROSTY ·
Thanks guys,
Yep Brendan the rims on the back are staying, I didn't think they would balance too well but they were good. They are crusty looking but the budget said they are staying (for now)
vassy66T1 ·
Awesome effort 👍👍

Hey there, I spoke with andra on Friday and my paperwork is in the mail. Just have to meet with the willowbank track official on Wednesday arvo and tick some box's, then it's out for a run ( all be it a couple of slow passes first) Checked out the weather forcast and it's going to be clear!
vassy66T1 ·
Congrats Jason! You are the man 👍
matberry ·
Good stuff Frosty, looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday night.
FROSTY ·
Hi matt I might need you magic fingers to check these carbs ( if that's ok?)
matberry ·
Yeah mate, of course. I hope to get there early

Hi There,
We went out to the tnt wed night and i didnt get real far... the ends fell of the axles? might need to up grade!!!!
Has anyone got some strong ones sitting round they want to get rid of? (second hand)
Thanks
Jason
humpty ·
Nice work.... You snapped both!
Doing a burnout or at launch?
FROSTY ·
It was on the launch. It must have broken at the same time too cause it didn't pull to one side either.

they look rusty
Stanley ·
Could've been worse Frosty.
FROSTY ·
Hey Ian, there are a couple of yellow marks on them..?
Hey Stanley, I thought it was going to be worse, I might try to get a new diff and some bigger axles.
I going to try for another TNT in about 3-4 weeks.
Stanley ·
I'm going to aim for the Saturday before Jambo.
humpty ·
Stanley wrote:Could've been worse Frosty.
Much worse.... Open centre diff in there too?.... Unbelievable!
FROSTY ·
Shhhh ! welded diff
dangerous ·
I have ERCO alum spools if you want to go that way dude.
Best get some good axles first though.
ian.mezz ·
you could give mick motors a call ,as he sell rancho, to see how much new axles are 😊
1916baja ·
They must have been ready to snap hey, I have a video of the launch and you would barely have been pulling 4500rpm... Granted, you might have a few more runs on those axles than me but my engine was more or less the same power, same slicks but with a heavier car and heavier wheels and I was launching at closer to 6500rpm and was lucky enough not to break any axles... I reckon they were rooted! You do have me a little worried now as to whether I'm going to break mine first run out now!
FROSTY ·
Hey Mick, can't believe you didn't break any... !
Spool going in this week, just got to get some axles, fire suit and I'm straight back out there!

Frosty,
I've got a suit you can have if you want it. Should fit you ok. Fairly old but in good nick.

Thanks Michael ( pm sent)

Quick update, WPVW supplied new HD axles that are 3 inches shorter and i have had to move the ladder bars in to suit. Wayne also sent up a pair of Chris Bolton's alloy wheels (great prices and super fast freight, thanks guys!). I was going to run them as 4 stud but swapping over to the 4 stud was going to be a hassle so i had Dave Butler machine them down and into 5 stud. Dave also installed an alloy spool for me. Massive thanks to Dave for fitting me in between other work!!!!
I had the tyres mounted today. These are perfect and took a tiny amount of counter weight.
I also had a very generous offer from Michael Nash and took him up on it, i now have a driving suit boots and gloves. Im now ready for a TNT hoping for Wed next week.
thanks
Frosty

Way to go Frosty!.... I just paid a small fortune for a pair of 8" ERCO's from the Laufers.... Tough to get rims like that here, and importing can be very exy.... You done good!
Dasdubber ·
Nice one Frosty....and Wayne and Michael for getting Jason and Dummkopf on the track sooner!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Nice one frosty!! Good to hear the volksy community helping each other out!! Well done to all involved!!
FROSTY ·
ok i'm all back together now and have to wait for a tnt, rear wheels just stick out a little to much. (off set is just a little out) i need to know who can make or anyone has some to sell some widened fibreglass guards. i need a guard that is stock looking but widened on the part the bolts to the body. I have welded 25mm to the inside and this will do for the moment.
Thanks
Jason
1916baja ·
Looks fat! You can have my glass guards but they're ugly.
essex ·
Looks like the car has come together really well, rear wheels look great, Good luck Frosty
dangerous ·
^^ Barry you have a nice quality rear guard on your car.
Did you say they came from Wayne?
1916baja ·
Ben was telling me in Sydney he has a mould to make guards like his... If you need his number shoot me a text.

That strip looks pretty good to me.... Just tidy it up and roll it Frosty.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Congrats dude!! Obviously it goes nice and straight!! Not bad numbers at all for a soft launch!!
essex ·
Well done Frosty, this project has moved along fast,
FROSTY ·
Hey there, that was my quickest for the night.
It ended up having a miss and it felt like the limiter was coming on, so it is already time for an upgrade. Out go the stock pushrods, rocker shafts and springs. I was also thinking that the points in the distributor might be bouncing too so thats going too.
I was quicker on all runs that this motor has previously done also the car runs straight and feels great to drive
60' 1.720 I was only giving it about 80% off the line to.
330 5.30
1/8 8.40
1/4 13.68
Mph 100.90
The other good thing for the night was I can sit in lane one to wait with the andra cars , that's worth the membership soon as the were two cars you are called forward.
Thanks for the comments, man this fun!!!!!!!
1916baja ·
Crackin times mate! That little 1776 is a freak!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
You keep getting quicker and some of the turbo boys aren't going to like you no more hahaha

Well done Frosty....awesome stuff
13bwagon ·
freakin hell thats one cool AUSSIE build drag car the sky is the limit for you !!!
FROSTY ·
Heads are off and I think it might be spark plug not Firing lots of unburnt fuel and very wet, the others are dry and clean. I'm still going for a spring and pushrods upgrade.
Hey Damo, my kid is driving.... Ha ha. I only have to see the lights and the end of the track.
Dave checked out my heads today and the springs are shagged, he has something in mind that will do the job, pushrods and rocker shafts will be replaced too.
FROSTY ·
Hey mick, they will be coming up soon!!!!!
1916baja ·
👍
hypo-vw ·
Hey Frosty , well done on your times mate .....
I do have the widened stock looking guards in stock in both 2-layer for race and 3-layer for more stability . call me if you need a set and I will send them to you . Wayne
humpty ·
That looks so damn tough.... Well done Frosty.
FROSTY ·
I went around to see Dave B today and he has machined my heads to take some duel springs, he also shimmed them up and supplied some super strong pushrods. (guides needed some machining down too)
FROSTY ·
wing also comes in handy too!

That's awesome frosty, its all coming together now.👍👍
FROSTY ·
My innovate delivery turned up today.
RISKY4LIFE ·
nice LM-2 ? have fun at warwick m8 🙂
SuperOwen ·
You might know this but if you don't wire the lm2 up to a 12v source that doesn't switch off when you kill the engine you'll lose your log every time, it needs to be stopped logging before switching off which is easy to forget at the races. I had mine set up in a cigarette socket and it would jiggle around a bit, lose power for a split second and lose the log as well, so I hard wired it in.
20bkombi ·
Sweeeet!!! You'll love it.
FROSTY ·
Thanks for the tip Owen, that I wouldn't have known. I haven't finished wiring yet so that saved me some time. ( exactly what a forum is for )
FROSTY ·
Hi There, I had it weighed this arvo and 605kgs +me at 85Kg makes 690kgs. Time to get the hold saw out on the doors, I also have some light fiberglass rear guards too from WPVW.
Thanks

yep, she's looking good on the vid. I'm still watching it
FROSTY ·
Ok its 2014 and i'm starting with a fresh motor. Massive THANKS to Dave Butler for his time and Knowledge! I’m still running 1776 but have put some new parts in. AA Piston/ cylinders, Pauter Cam and followers ( Dave knows the specs) Autocraft 1.4:1 rockers on my stock heads (not really meant to fit but with machining they did), Dave installed new guides and gave the heads some more porting, new stock valves have been installed, pushrods needed to be shortened too.
Now there is a couple of things left, run the cam in, finish fixing the trailer this weekend, TNT on the 5th Feb and then the JP 1/8 mile series round one at Warwick on the 8th Feb.
coletrickle ·
Frosty, what can i say, you've done an unreal job! From my point of veiw the guys with all the cash will havd to run 8's@160 in a conventional bug to top the flying chicken/vulture!See u at the tnt!

Top work Frosty...hopefully we can both debut new bits on the 5th
FROSTY ·
I've had some time so i decided to paint this thing ( i was always going to) I swapped the steel rear guards for light fiberglass and rewired the whole car (the birds nest is gone)
