How do shockless beams work?

its just running them with out shocks. its not only illegal but down right stupid. would you drive any other kind of car with only part of the suspension it originally came with fitted.

I figured as much, an no, wouldnt run them. Was just curious, seeing as alot of the VW shops still sell them.

Cheers Barls.

Its all to do with a certain look, you narrow the beam so far so the shocks do not fit, just leave them off. any reduction of track is illeagal and dangerous.

No shocks is a sideshow ride ... bounce, bounce, bounce 😵‍💫

each to their own i say, if you dont like it dont do it, no need to have a bitch about it time after time, you know what they say about opinions

A lot of the "COOL" kids do crack as well!

vwo60 ·

Can any one of the clowns that think this is acceptable give me a sound engineering reason why they do it, other than the look, it's all well and good until you are charged with culpable driving after a serious accident.

whathaveidone ·

He asked a question and it got answered!!!!!
I cant remember seeing anything about the legal side of it in his question.

barls ·

he did mention it in his post which he seems to have deleted.

whathaveidone ·

I stand corrected!!!!

bajachris88 ·

From the sounds of it the 'shocks' are still there 😁🤪

Given the opinions haha.

I found a Samba thread which answered my question soon after I posted it initially, it answered my question (and revealed a shit fight with regards to safety etc) so i deleted my initial post to avoid the above, haha. Barls was too quick for me though and the thread lived on.

Sorry.

70AutoStik ·

So, it's illegal and stupid - apart from that?

whathaveidone ·

Its cool as shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

68AutoBug ·

Big in US and UK...

where they must drive on super flat roads... lol

Having worn out shock absorbers is dangerous when braking

so having none... ??

and as said its about the look... Nose down..

Have any of u pipe n slipper guys ever driven a car without shocks , probably not so no experience to comment on it haha

Pipe and slipper guys!!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂

Me! My 1923 Vauxhall 23/60 had NO shocks from new. It also only had brakes on the rear wheels.

After fitting shocks [from a Nissan Patrol] to the rear, I could stop the car in about half the distance, as the tyres were in contact with the road more. 🤪

Bill Stein 😂

Still waiting for the narrow beam/no shock supporters to give a sound engineering reason why you would reduce the safety of there vehicle doing this, there is down side to all the illegal modifications, if there is enough back yard mods the aurthorities will eventually stop all modifiation's, i make the effort to modify all my vehicles through a engineer so i can gain insurance and be able to drive the car legally.

I have 4.5 narrowed beam in my split and I challenge any stock legal split to safely go around a bend as fast as I can. But yes I do run shocks.

matberry ·

No shocks = no brain

vwo60 ·

4.5 inch reduction in track and it will go round the bend as fast as a standard width beam, that's pretty funny, if the standard front end has the same set up as yours it would win by default, with the added bonus of being legal.

kombibob ·

Wasnt saying that it was the best set up for handling, just that it handles better and would be safer than stock.
Doesnt your KG have a narrowed beam?

kombibob wrote:Wasnt saying that it was the best set up for handling just thats it handles better
Ah yes, that clarifies matters.... now I'll just put on my pipe and lights my slippers...

kombibob ·

yeah ok..

vwo60 ·

Yes it does and it is being replaced this trip home from work and a set of composite wheel fitted that will restore the correct track and scrub radius and fix the other issue that arise when you fit a wheel with the wrong offset to a car, i purchased the car with it fitted and has always been my intention to remove it as soon as possible, i will be looking foward to the improvment in the handling and the reduction in wear of all the front end components

psimitar ·

change in track IS legal in QLD within a certain amount. Can't remember off the top of me head the measurement.

Only reason to narrow a beam is on a LP Beetle that you want to run a front disc brake setup. Bout the only way you can use front discs and keep the tyres inside the arches.

UK and USA they aren't allowed to run without shox as yearly MOT guys will ream them one but it's easy to just use mini shox with rosejoint upper shox mount.

Obviously won't go round corners as quick as a std track Beetle but they still work pretty darn well 🙂

Klaus ·

narrowing the leaf springs will make the front end firmer , like the effects of having a swaybar ...more u narrow the firmer it gets , and generally you lower the bus aswell so lower centre of gravity and fit drop spindles =near stock suspention travel...hope you realize that all the bus guys only fit this to show or track busses , never on the rd ...never as were all purists and love reduction hubs and 4 wheel drums 😁

barls ·

guys we arent discussing narrowed beams but shockless beams. anyone with an engineering point of view? already put my point across which is shared by others.

vwo60 ·

you can get LP disc brake conversions that do not increase the track negating the need to narrow the beam, fit the correct off set wheels and maintain the correct geometry. i have just bought some tarox vented rotors in 5 x 130 to suit my new link pin beam, no increase in track.

bajachris88 ·

Someone should do a sheet panel kit (with fuel tank) to change the wheel wells about the lowered beam, as opposed to changing the beam about the body.

Drill out the spot welds and plug these panels into place.

70AutoStik ·

Actually, I have driven a mud basher with no shocks and the springs wound together giving a nearly rigid front end. Shocks are overrated on salt/mud flats 🙂

I left the pipe, slippers and martini at home, though.

OK - I still suspect it would have handled better with shocks. But it would have needed shock towers to do that...

D-train ·

ive driven stock with shocks, 4.5 with shocks an 6" beam shockless. the more out of the beam the stiffer the ride as klaus said. not legal. mag wheels arnt legal. differnt tyre profiles arnt legal, but does anyone care about them? no. a 6" beam with no shocks rode well for me an i enjoyed drivin it. it might be illegal an stupid but it looks good. narrowed beams are like patina. not everyones cup of tea. some people have to have to re paint their cars others like original. its only original once. repainting a car makes it never original again, but totally repainted/restored cars always seem to win "best original" at shows. so narrowed beams are a personal choice an if u dont like the look or think its stupid, dont do it. simple. keep it stock. dont hate people who have chosen to modify their rides. they prob dont judge u for painting over original paint.

kombibob ·

also most vw people drive to suit the style of the car.... eg narrowed, slammed cars are built to cruse not to race, just like a 600+hp hotrod is probably not the best race car but nice to cruse in and show off.
