AVD is too quiet, so just having a rant at myself here... I sold my kombi about 8 years ago, since then I have moved into my own place with a nice carport beside the house. I decided I missed my kombi so I went out and got myself a new project. This is all well and good, but now i've gotten it home the angle of my driveway is too steep to fit it under the carport. 馃お
Looks like i'll have some carport modifications before kombi modifications 馃槀
That'll teach me.

Show us a photo of the carport so we can brainstorm possible solutions.
donn 路
Good idea jeff, builders to the rescue, maybe a couple of jacks welded to the posts so the roof can be lifted then lowered back down to stop theft of the aforesaid bus. 馃槀馃お
waltermitty 路
your bus is too high!
you can lower it with justification.

a cheaper option is to flatten the tyres, drive it under the carport then pump em up again
reverse procedure when u want to go for a cruise 馃お
donn 路
Come on h, that would only put it closer to the ground, it's the roof that won't go under the carport.!馃檮

Got a few ideas... will probably just move the whole carport back plus make it a bit bigger in the process, the more free space the better... also thought of chopping the roof and making it a convertable 馃槀

Have you measured the height of the Kombi?..We have just extended our carport and are looking to buy a lowlight kombi but from what I read around the place the average standard height kombi is 2040mm and our carport has 2030mm clearance..lol. So we may need to lower ours..
Serious85 路
No I havent measured the kombi... cant let a little thing like that stand in the way of a good project lol... At least with yours its only 10mm difference... Lowered buses can look pretty sick, so its good motivation haha.

I vote for the lower the bus option 馃憤

You mean like this?
Serious85 路
I can't decide whether I like that or not...It would definatley get some looks... maybe if it was lowered too 馃憤
Does it have a full canopy I wonder?
Yogie 路
It looks good in the flesh. From memory it was used to take tourists around the factory site.

DOWN DOWN kombi's are DOWN馃檯
Serious85 路
at least the roof can't rust i guess... I wonder if a fibreglass roof would work... hmmm

You just need some smaller wheels fitted to fit under the carport... lol
You can buy them for caravans.. they just have about 25mm of solid rubber .. not normal wheels and very expensive... lol
If You deflated the tyres, drove it in then pumped up the tyres... if it was stolen.. just look for a kombi with a carport attached.... lol just joking...
the angle of the driveway into the carport makes a BIG difference too... [at the top]
extend the carport UPWARDS.. not a big job..
LEE
instead of tyres
Serious85 路
lol just had an image of my kombi driving around with the carport attached...

That would have to be the original Barn Find look then.... 馃榾

What is the carport construction ???
Brick,wood or steel coloumns /posts ???
Throw a pic or two up
Theres a few options depending on construcction and materials used
Ive just done a huge 19 M x 12 M toy room,minimun height at lowest point is 2.4 m
greedy53 路
bob the builder can we do it yes we can loved that show and my grand child put me onto it lol lol
Serious85 路
19mx12m wont fit! lol wish it could though... I've decided to pull the old one down, extend the slab and put up a new carport...
Still not sure if i'll do the concrete myself, has anybody used a concrete taxi before?
Then it'll just be a wooden frame with a tin roof. Gotta find a second hand roller door... or 2... then i can have a door to the back yard as well as the front...
This will be an 'after xmas' job now though haha... too much going on this time of year.

Wouldnt use wood, just wood wood wouldnt .........
Check out some auction houses around i scored 200 mm C purlins, factory 2nds for $4 a metre
Mite have a scratch or two,or holes punched in the wrong spot from one end, throw that in the ground anyway
Best bet before doin anything go see the overeducated desk jockies at the council, anything over 10 sq ft, has to be council approved
Yep,10 sq ft, a garden shed that what 10 sq ft is .....
Im doin a 12 M x 6 m for a mate,only a flat slightly tapered roof profile,not pitched,shoot me a PM if ya want the specs
2 people, coupla days should be done
donn 路
You go putting "C" purlins directly into the ground (assume) you mean onto a concrete footing) and you are looking at a failed column / post within a few years, very bad idea, corrosion will have them rooted real quick
Serious85 路
But I like wood lol... But I will have a look at some other options beforehand...
My mum spoke to our local member as well... He goes you can put it right up against the fence as long as the neighbour doesn't complain 馃お ... I think i'm pretty right to do whatever here really, the neighbours are drugs dealers I think, so they will never complain haha.
Serious85 路
But its ok... its doesnt snow here 馃お lol
donn 路
Wow, looks like you should include a pitched roof to the design criteria. 馃憤馃憤
General_Failure 路
Either take the roof up or the floor down.
One day I hope to perform a mod to our carport to accomodate my VW. It involves removing a lot of materials from the inside of the garage 馃槀
nedsbug 路
The local council will have structural guidelines if there are wind issues or weather issues
A flat roof say will need alot more structure to hold the weight of snow morso than a pitched roof
Some countries O/S have seriously pitched roofs to get the undue excess weather weight of quickly
Some council laws , can have sheds build upto and including boundry lines, some prefer a minimum of a set distance
Wood is easy to work with for some, but steel, grinders, nibblers , tex screws, purlin bolts are fun too and sometimes alot stronger than wood
200 MM C purlin can span 6 M unsupprted,wont twist, rot,be eaten by borers

General_Failure wrote:Either take the roof up or the floor down.
I thought of this... but just decided if I was going to spend time and money I may as well make it how I want it... which is bigger lol.
As for the council... Not overly worried, if they ever came I would take the walls down and say its a gazebo, should be alright haha.
nedsbug 路
Its not the walla that make it a shed or whatever
its the roof materials, anything hard roof, like tin, corro, trim deck whatever over 10 sq foot has to be council approved
Even a carport , they have no walls has to go thru the wombats at the local rip off centre (council)
Approval for my shed ,is $500 regardless of size, so i went huge, its dearer than approval for the house ....
The last council i was in wanted approval for a hard roofed walkway,2 M wide 4 M long, was even the plastic/fibreglass coro roof, but was a hard roof
Even approval for a bird aviary, 3 M x 8 M
Some pergolas go thatched roof get around council that way, and some are under the 10 sqft area
Just be careful with the council , you can be fined for unapproved stuff, they can make you pull it all down
Many councils dont do building certifications nowadays its all threw private certifiers as it voids councils of any future liabilities
You build it, it causes injury for whatever the reason, youll be liable
Not saying it happens, but theres too many people that want the fast road to money and they will sue anyone for any reason to get it
It crazy out there, do it once do it right ,poor man pays twice
Serious85 路
My Dad came over today... He appealed to my lazy side 馃槑 . So now we'll just raise it up... but i'm taking a section of wall out from under my house so that I can park my other car.
Our council said we can build carports with no approval... he said as soon as you put walls on though it became a dwelling... I dunno, thats just what he said lol... I believe many councils forget what their real role is and can go a little overboard with telling the ratepayers what they can and can't do.
Serious85 路
Well I finally pulled my carport down today... Still trying to decide how I want to rebuild it but websites never have prices so i'll have to ring around on Monday 馃ゲ . The wooden posts were all rotten below the concrete So steel posts may be the go... dunno... But here are some pics... the ones I was meant to post at the start of the thread 馃檯
Serious85 路
I didnt think to take a 'before shot'... So all I had was the old real estate photo...
Hopefully tomorrow I can get my good 'Ol Dad over and work out what we are going to do.

one place I live in for a while had a driveway too narrow to even fit the car to get to the crapy garage at the back.
the mirrors just crunched against the house and the fence on the other side
馃檮
only one of my friends with a 2000 hyundai could only just get through.
My mate and I who lived there had to park in the gate across the foot path. 馃槀
at least you could get in your driveway.
Serious85 路
That must have been a pain man haha... I bet you're glad you moved.
Well its nearly finished, all I need to do is put a proper gate up.
