Hi there. I'm wondering if any one knows about importing a kombi from the USA to Australia. I'm looking at buy a 1965 split screen kombi lhd from the USA and iv been reading up about it and none off it really makes any sense.

If anyone could explaine it to me in an easier way, then this would really help me out. As iv been told you have to transfer them to rhd And the vehicle has to be standard the way it came out the factory.

Plus can you register them in any state or Is it only one state in Australia u can register them.

I really appreciate your time and hopefully I can finally get to the bottom off this

Many thanks. Curtis.

What state are you in? That will change what is required for registration. In VIC you can keep it LHD for historic vehicles (age older than 30 years) and it can be fully registered with a roadworthy (needs engineer approval as well if manufactured after 1969 or if any modifications are made). You also have to make an appointment with Vicroads so they can check chassis number. Importation is done under historic vehicle category so car does need to look stock. You cannot put your car on a ship without a vehicle import approval which can take 3+ weeks to get.

Am just going through the process myself with a NZ vehicle but I have also purchased a US car that was already imported. I haven't gone through the process of registering yet. Importing and getting through customs seems far more tricky to me!!
