What is the Most important tool to have in Your VW?
68AutoBug - September 5th, 2003 at 02:05 PM

IMHO- One of the best tools to have in Your VW toolbox is- small pointed nose "Vise Grips" . these can be used to clamp off a brake hose when You have a leaking brake cylinder etc, or if You have an engine fire fed from fuel from the fuel tank, use these little beauties to clamp off the fuel line under the fuel tank..
stops the fire and hopefully will save Your VW. I have used them on brake hoses over the years and they work great, just put a cable tie around them so they don't fall off... naturally not on My cars...
Worth their weight in gold, or for Dave, in Crownies.... Lee :D

KruizinKombi - September 5th, 2003 at 03:22 PM

LMAO!! ;)

My favourite tool in my kombi is my big MoFo jumper leads, for jump starting all those silly pr1cks who drive Falcadores and don't like doing maintenance!! :D

type3kid - September 5th, 2003 at 03:27 PM

tools? who uses them when takin someone out? just keep a nice cute toy or two in there and chicks seem to dig it, works every time. first they love the car, then once they are inside they love the toys. i've got 2 matchbox toy cars, 1 a splitty. and a soft tugboat a freind bought me. she thought it was cool coz it vibrates when you pull a string. why do you think i drive a square???? komis are bonuses too:D

Baja Wes - September 5th, 2003 at 04:24 PM

can't go past the trusty wheel brace I reckon.

11CAB - September 5th, 2003 at 06:01 PM

One dehydrated VW mechanic.......just add water.......:D:D:D
Or is that just me???
:o

amazer - September 5th, 2003 at 07:47 PM

The one you dont have. Thats the one you'll need.

I recently worked out you should take everything that you could possibly need for a complete rebuild by camp light.

4lb hammer and chisel works well for getting clutches and flywheels off.

6 inches of speaker wire!, long story, you had to be there.:D

mattie - September 5th, 2003 at 08:29 PM

keys now you cant go anywhere without keys can you!!

amazer - September 5th, 2003 at 09:41 PM

yes you can. Had a wiring meltdown near goulburn on way to last years day of the vw. Broke the plug off the ignition with a screw driver and hotwired it for a week. As well as the lights.

Grey 57 - September 5th, 2003 at 09:57 PM

dont need a key to get a VW running. bit of wire and an aligator clip is the universal key to transport.

I reckon the MVP of tools would have to be the swiss army knife. Just ask McGyver.
Blown clutch ??? no wukkers got me swiss army knife mate!
dropped valve ??? too easy with the swiss army knife! ;)

68AutoBug - September 6th, 2003 at 12:11 AM

Sorry,
I forgot about the swiss army knife...
and the fire extinguisher... and the pliers,
& sockets, Multimeter, screwdrivers and VW 19/21mm special tool for taking the fan belt off and changing the wheel bolts.
I NEVER have carried a wheel brace.. I don't like them.. there are always 3 sizes that don't fit Your wheel nut or bolt....
:D

Dasdubber - September 6th, 2003 at 08:13 AM

I use the 10 and 13mm spanners quite a bit. Also a flat blade screwdriver can provide some good improvisations!;)

Baja Wes - September 6th, 2003 at 09:21 AM

A wheel brace can be used for wheels, to settle arguements when someone cuts you off, to break the window and crawl out when you roll the car...

When your wheel nuts start to rattle loose when offroading, it's good to have a wheel brace. I have had the wheel nuts start to loosen themselves a few times.

have to say the keys to my ever reliable hilux....

Andy42 - September 6th, 2003 at 11:52 AM

Someone big and strong so they can push

Starbug - September 6th, 2003 at 12:46 PM

a spare battery.

used to be a spare generator and battery, but now its just a spare battery.;)

and a flat-head screwdriver.

Boozer - September 6th, 2003 at 01:06 PM

Jay_1965vw - September 6th, 2003 at 07:30 PM

Redbus - you'll be right now you won a jerry can in the raffle last week right :D

My most useful tool? RACV membership :)

helbus - September 6th, 2003 at 07:39 PM

I would have to say the fuel can. Fleur never fills up until she has put the spare fuel in- After running out. :D

jenz58 - September 6th, 2003 at 07:46 PM

Hmm, fuel gauge:)

Is that a tool? Don't have one;)

Peer down into the tank and go, 'YES' another 5 klm left, that's home without stopping and maybe to the servo next morning if I get up early enough to spare the time to fill up:thumb

p.s. only run out of petrol once when I was told to have the tank pretty, if not completely, empty;)

JOE751 - September 6th, 2003 at 11:36 PM

Gerber muli tool is the best...I have also found artey claps good for hose. small little flat head driver (carbi, points...) and most recently a spare cluch cable....Oh and cable ties...oh and the rooted cluch cable tied in a loop to help you move the lever to get the new cable in...on sydney rd at 10:00pm...perhaps we should have a thread for the most jerry rigged VW

lugnuts - September 7th, 2003 at 12:46 AM

A torch,if you do night shift.:(
