Who sells triple chrome bumpers in Australia?
hrastovica - May 27th, 2013 at 12:29 AM

I've been searching everywhere for triple chromed bumpers (with towel rails and overiders) for my beetle and cant seem to find them anywhere other than Wolfsburg West (the postage is just through the roof).

Everyone seems to be selling the stainless steel variety, however, as i also want to install the chrome overider kit (the little "bumper bumpers"), i dont think it would be wise to mix s/steel and chrome.

Is anyone selling these bumpers new in Australia?

vw54 - May 27th, 2013 at 06:32 AM

VVDS 02-9789-1777 have them in stock

If your car lives outside, and you want shiny, then you are better off re-chroming.

Triple chrome is better than the others but I have had them spot and start to rust within 6 months

I thought I saw the towel rail bumpers complate in stainless steel.. on an Aussie website..
Maybe Alan at Das Resto Haus may have them..??

and You are correct, stainless stell is a different color to chrome.. actually can be different colors..

My rear bumper is brasillian made and its been on My car since Dec 2005.. I wax it every few weeks.. sometimes months..
and no rust.. it came in a sealed plastic bag..
I should have noted the brand.. lol

cheers

LEE

I would still wax whatever chrome ones You get..
actually one of the locals just took his towel rail bumper back after it rusted .. and had it replaced.. as it did cost Him around $1000... Lee

stainless steel is looking better... lol

You could buy the cheap chromed ones and have them rechromed.. but the thickness of steel is still thinner.. LEE
and rechroming isn't cheap..

I was surprised to learn they would charge me about the same to rechrome my old ones (that are probably not originals anyway).

The other problem is that my current front bumper has a dent, so it will actually be more expensive to repair.

If only someone made the overider kits in stainless steel all my problems would be solved. To be honest i would prefer to have S/Steel, its just that discrepancy in colour between the bumper and overider kit that concerns me.

Then again, its not a daily driver, will be used only on weekends, im guessing the wax will be enough to protect it and just do it every couple months with the rest of the car.

It seems that all the good parts suppliers are in Sydney. VVDS in Sydney has the Wolfsburg West triple chrome bumper bars with towel rails in stock for $1320 inc GST + Shipping.

Thanks for your help!

I have only been charged extra in re chroming when holes are welded up.
Dents are part of the service.

The benefit of re chroming is they put a copper base down and this prevents rusting

The triple chrome is effectively just gives it 3 coats of paint without treating the source.

I pay $300 - $400 a bumper picked up and dropped off.

AFAIK it is done in Albury. So no premium for Melbourne.

I have a Brazilian euro bar that has been rechromed and it has done 3 years 24/7 outside and is fine. Except it is slightly thinner than OG.

Thinner steel that is - not the chrome

I would try and get some old OG and get them chromed or buy the cheapest new ones and get them done.

You should still come out in front and have a better finish.

Im happy to send them over to Albury if they do a good job, hell i'll drive up there for a couple days if i have to, God knows i need a holiday.

Who do you recommend?

I got two early bus bumpers need chrome . Where is a good spot

vw54 - May 27th, 2013 at 06:08 PM

talk to Boris the place is at Albury

65standard - May 27th, 2013 at 06:39 PM

If you were is Sydney, there's a chroming place in Moorebank. He gave me a price of "around $300 per bumper" to chrome dip. He did my headlight reflectors for $40 each. Not painted, but chrome dipped. I won't need to worry about the reflectors fading.

I didn't get the bumpers done, as I daily drive the car and am not at all fussed about concourse looks.

barls - May 27th, 2013 at 06:45 PM

i got a triple show chrome one from coffs chrome a few years back that was exchange.

Not all the good vw parts suppliers are in Sydney ;)

Remember DAS Resto Parts on the Gold Coast - we stock a huge range of Wolfsburg West parts. Unfortunately we don't have the towel rails at the moment but can get them.....we have the triple chrome WW earlys in stock though with the small over riders plus all mounting hardware etc:

http://dasrestoparts.com.au/body-and-exterior-trim/beetle-body-and-exterior-t...

Can ship nationwide no problems. Just so you know we are off to the US on Friday for OCTO and the VW Classic etc, plus my annual visit to Wolfsburg West and other shops - away for 2 weeks ;)

Cheers
Al

I know your site well... will make sure to buy some stuff from you guys also... gotta share the love hey!

Have a blast on your trip!!

helbus - May 29th, 2013 at 12:02 AM

I get my stuff done by AA Vinnys. He offers two levels of finish. If you just want a fix and chrome, or if you want show quality triple plate. It is about 30% more for the good stuff.

It is like a spray paint. Do you just want a paint job, or do you want the ripples rubbed out and a topcoat rubbed with no orange peel? Do you want it to look shiny now, but fade in 3 years?

Dak-A-Tak - May 29th, 2013 at 08:06 AM

Not mentioned , Triple Chrome is the 3 steps made for the process .
Step 1 : Copper Plating - corrosion protection , build up surface smoothness and can fill miner inperfections , polished , can build up a few layers .
Step 2 : Nickel Plating - more protection for corrosion , adds deeper luster to the chrome , give a surface for chrome to bond to .
Step 3 : Chrome Plating - Goes in once for a very short time ( bumper , 1 to 2 minutes ) , can only be done once ( total strip if there is a problem , lite chrome burns can be polished ), some parts may get a very very fine machine polish .
Lots of people think the chrome is put on 3 times not true , chrome is like painting - its only as good as what is under it .

Bizarre - May 29th, 2013 at 08:39 AM

^^^^ that is different to my previous understanding.
But a Google search shows I have been ill informed

I have certainly paid for "triple plated" bumpers that have spotted and rusted within 6 months.
None of the bumpers I have had re-chromed have ever rusted.
It was my understanding the "imported" bumpers didn't get the base coats of copper or nickel

Whatever....... I still stand by that my choice of bumpers go
1 OG re chromed
2 imported re chromed
3 there is no third choice

Lucky i got OG bumpers, after reading this thread I will def be fixing them.

hrastovica - May 29th, 2013 at 10:27 AM

By the way, i got a quote for triple chrome from Vinnies, and i think it came out about $1200 for the front back and all overiders. He called it show quality triple chrome.

By the way this incuded all repairs/straightening, i think he mentioned polishing at the end also.

vw54 - May 29th, 2013 at 06:49 PM

yep that's about the right price

hrastovica - May 30th, 2013 at 09:13 AM

Well well well. Turns out i've got a great little scam that will save me $500.

I realised i could go the stainless steel bumpers and just fabricate the little "bumper bumpers" out of stainless for less than it would cost me to buy them.

Not a bad little scam at all.
