Family Fun Day at Forster
grumble - July 7th, 2013 at 06:06 PM

A great day at Forster Keys for the annual old boat regatta, old and classic cars, model boats, kids entertainment, dog show and lots of other stuff to fill a day. The boats put on a performance show which is fairly spectacular when you know how wide Pipers creek is,but this is where the boats used to race in days gone by. My wife and I even pulled the Ghia out of the shed for a run,i had almost forgotten how good it is to drive beautiful little car that it is.I will try to post a photobucket link for some pics as I haven't been successful so far.

Looks like a top day.

The power boats look similar to the ones I saw racing last time I was there - in the early 1960s.

We went down In the 57 beetle with a trailer to pick up our first (2nd hand) TV - one of my Uncles (Dad's brother in law) worked on them in Sydney, and arranged it. He was into power boat racing, and brought his boat up to Forster to race, so we met him there. As a 3 or 4 year old then, it seemed so far - the trip seemed to take forever.

I remember we had a big tall aerial to get the Newcastle TV stations - the only ones around then. It was all snowy, and the black & white picture & sound would fade in and out. lol

Yes the trip would have taken forever back then as the road through Purfleet and over the 4 mile was a billy goat track,my Dad was a mad fisherman and we used to camp at the old internment camp between Tuncurry and Blackhead there were no amenities and we used to camp in the caravan near the beach. That was an experience towing the van there and then through the bush. They improved the highway over the years and it was quite good prior to the bypass. Quite a few of the boats are restored or replicas,Bert Everingham is still making a boat every now and then and he had one there last year, I didn't see him around but he was probably there. It was hard to get a good shot of any with the little point and shoot as the boat was gone before it focussed resulting in a water spray. The dog show was a ripper.
