Ally = Bullet proof
STIDUB - July 29th, 2013 at 10:49 AM
8kg heavier though apparently, all where you don't want it :P
bajachris88 - July 29th, 2013 at 11:33 AM
I'm sure someone on the aftermarket front will adopt the production, seeing there will be a demand still. Unless there are patents i suppose...

LOL, the extra weight has bugger all affect on handling.
whats a large aftermarket sump, external oil filter and coolers filled with extra oil weigh.......no one has a problem adding that extra weight to the
rear of a beetle !!!
sander288 - July 29th, 2013 at 06:56 PM
if we were really looking to save weight out back we'd call them "Slim Boy" mufflers!!!

Doug Sweetman - July 29th, 2013 at 11:03 PM
Just have another muffin to even it out....

Wow, surprised to here you say that Craig. Adding all that weight does make your car handle worse. The engine is behind the axle and
so extra engine weight means more rear bias, so reduces front end grip and increases the pendulum out the back. Now day to day you may think it's
un-noticeable, but it WILL make an effect. The time you might notice it is that little loose that you may have caught without the extra pendumum but
with it you missed catching it and it sent you into the wall. Same on the street IMO, that near miss could get turned into that spin into on coming
traffic/tree/whatever....you get the idea.
Extra sumps and oil and big carbs all add weight, so it is very important to limit the addition of weight to the engine. you start with an 8kg block,
and then add 2 for carbs, another 2 or 3 for big heads, another 3 - 5 for oil, say 1 for oil system. Even the crankshaft gets heavier, about the only
thing that looses weight is the flywheel and that is at the front of the engine.... Add it up, lets go with the big numbers as there are definately
more heavier parts added that I haven't included (actual sump, c/m pushrods, bigger pistons/cylinders, valve springs, exhaust...it all adds up) So
we're pretty close to 20kg without trying to hard....and to think you can't feel that hanging out the back!

Yep that's right Matt, an extra 20kg has been added into a 'modified beetle' already in the rear, with probably 99% of beetle owners experiencing
no difference in how the car drives since adding the parts. Its the same with the case, BUGGER ALL will feel the handling change by fitting an engine
made with a Ally case.
My comments are not in relation to building the ultimate street or race car, but more to say that in most situations the Ally case will not change the
handling or should I say handling feel of the car the block is being used in.
I'd be more worried about being hit by a beetle using 135tyres that couldn't stop rather than an Ally case powered one with a so called pendulum
problem !!

66deluxe - August 3rd, 2013 at 11:51 AM
But 135's are the new racing slick. Your missing out Craig.
mactaylor - August 3rd, 2013 at 03:29 PM
yeah it all depends on your setup. but i agree with matt weight does matter! the biggest improvement we can make with our little cars is weight
reduction and a HP jump. Put the weight in the right spots and it improves the driving expeirience. Craig you must agree "To add speed add
lightness"!
Craig Torrens - August 3rd, 2013 at 06:28 PM
My discussion isn't about whether "lighter is faster", its about most VW drivers noticing bugger all difference in the handling of their car if
they fitted a motor built using a Ally case over a mag one.
Anyway back to the topic.......so what is everyone doing about stockpiling ?
Has there been an increase in retail price yet for the cases ?

yeah I agree, it would be a placebo effect if you claimed to notice 8 friggen kg.
I didn't even notice what probably was 100kg of crap in the back of my SB back in the day when I still had it, not even taking it sideways on a dirt
road. I noticed infinitely greater effect which tyre width and pressure than what weight did.
bajachris88 - August 3rd, 2013 at 09:45 PM
If really worried about weight bias, you could offset the additional kgs by moving the battery to the front nose in front of the leading wheels. The
distance won't be a problem, as it works for ricers with battery in the boot. thats about 18kgs
I can't say i have seen or heard this done much, apart from drag applications under teh fibreglass front ends (which have the battery still behind
the front wheels.)
66deluxe - August 4th, 2013 at 11:20 AM
Who cares about the extra weight just learn how to drive to correct the apparent extra weight.

exactly! The only time I had to drive different to correct for the weight was when there was 5 people altogether in the car. how many kg is that?
say 75kg on average each = 375kg. yes you do notice it then.

not much of an offset then.

For all the die hard VW case people, I'm happy to swap a AS21 bored for 90.5 case for an Ally one if anyone is interested

I got a 5000km used one I'd happily swap
Craig Torrens - August 12th, 2013 at 07:00 PM
Sounds good Matt...............unless its that shonk one that's been welded up?
colin - August 12th, 2013 at 08:09 PM
Having a car with a original VW mag case it is a little disappointing that they will be ceasing production.
Yes ally cases are far stronger, and an excellent choice for 99% of people.
However , anyone that comments that an extra 8kg won,t make any difference to a cars handling especially in a Beetle in the rear.
Well you simply have no clue about car set up, weight transfer and corner weighting.
Cheers Col
