Hi karstan,

I had one of these on my lowlight may years ago, definatly makes the ole 1600 a little more perky (think mine was1641) the tap is added because on a cold morning start the fuelwould just sit in the elbow there and on start it would then suck it all in at once. then bobs your uncle, you have a flooded motor.
otherwise I was very happy with it till some numpty cracked the block drilling for an external cooler.
expect your fuel economy to go WAY down

RISKY4LIFE - August 9th, 2013 at 09:04 AM

did it coast $495 ? :) very very cool !

karstan - August 9th, 2013 at 09:19 AM

Thanks nils yeah i figureds that was the reason ... the picture is off google ... so i didnt mean the circle to be there. :-)

Where/when did you get yours ... and where is it now ?

ian.mezz - August 9th, 2013 at 12:56 PM

I wonder how good the seals and gasket, bearing etc are after sitting on a shelf for 43 years.
it would be a shame to open it and put it on a car s:fakesniff:
we have a turbo bug heaps of fun,
even with double HP 80 hp would be good on the street.

karstan - August 9th, 2013 at 01:36 PM

Yeah ... it will be a shame too open it ... but i dont really see the point on keeping it in a box either . Ill get the turbo looked at before fitting it i guess. Iv been looking for a Rajay kit fo some time .. and i could only find the odd used kit missing peices and with Pressure releif valves modified into the kit. And all i found didnt have the solex manifold anymore .

Hopefully have it setup and running for Central Coast Showdown this month.

100% Agreed

Its the hanging your head out the window listening for the spool thats addictive. No muffler and such a short exhaust, it's really obvious :)

karstan - August 25th, 2013 at 11:00 AM

Bolted her in Friday ... And drove too Gosford yeterday.. Few tuning issues.. She seems too ping abit when underload up hills .

Nils what timing did you have on your 1600 ... Should i be looking at limiting the Advance on the dizzy ?

I had pinging issues aswell, and the exhaust got super duper hot. Hows your jetting on the carb? I used a stromburg off an old holden which helped alot, can't remember off top of my head what holden from but it was a direct bolt on. An adjustable main jet was avalible for this carb too. Lastly I had mike at dual fuel services in caboolture queensland modify my dizzy to retard on boost.

Hope this helps, It was a very long time ago

Bizarre - August 25th, 2013 at 03:51 PM

so how does it go - besides the pinging ??

karstan - August 25th, 2013 at 06:21 PM

You can feel the torque and power but i feel it isnt too its full potential ... So Nils Wat was done too the dizzy ?? and did it work ?

i was thinking of getting a billet pertronix allowing the dyno guys to play with different advance curves ... Also getting a rebuilt german solex and installing the rajay carbi Mods .

In the instructions it said dont bother with the carbie and dizzy mods is using for street .. But i think do the carby mods for sure.
?
So i guess you want the engine to advance as normal at low revs then retard under boost correct .?

nils - August 25th, 2013 at 07:16 PM

Not too sure on the details there karstan, dizzys might as well be black magic.

Just told Mike what my problem was and he fixed it, He has tuned a lot of my VWs over the years. He even banished the dreaded 009 flat spot from the 1835 that I just sold. Last I heard he is still in business, will look into it alittle and see if I can get some info. But that is my understanding

Thats right.
The ultimate is use one of these, fully programable so tuneable at the punch of a keyboard.

The old fashon way is to get a og dizzy with dual vac canister, the retard can be plumbed to work under boost but the adv works off boost, also has mechanical adv happening as well that can be fine tune. All is a bit hit and miss with out techo gear but results can be good once you get a feel what to do, but can take ages to get things right.

I'd go digital, they're great

Hi,
If you want to just stop the detonation and save lots of money, just lock your advance in the dizzy and set it at 24 degrees. You will love it.
The fast timing at low RPM will help to spool up the turbo and it will still start easy.
No need to ad electronics to your car and make it more complicated......keep it simple.
As for the carbie, when used as suck through, don't modify it, till you get your timing right.
It is, probably, just the fast timing that makes it detonate.
You can always add water injection to stop detonation. Modifying your solex will just make it use more fuel, all the time.
Cheers, Hermann.

Would a pertronix do the same as locking out a 009 ?
Using the springs and stops ?

ian.mezz - August 27th, 2013 at 08:41 AM

I bet you got heaps of looks and comments .
you need to lock the dissy and time to about 24deg, no mechanical or vacuum advance. and also try 95 or vpower 98 fuel, the pinging noise you speak of ,are the piston trying to get out the side of the barrel
also we use Castrol edge 25/50 motor oil.

AJ sims sell the 009 dissy and you could add a comufire DIS Ignition system or just a comufire crank pick up and pulley and still run points in the dissy .

you could also buy a chap boost gauge from autobarn and see what boost you getting .
