Legal?
L7back - August 25th, 2013 at 05:38 PM

This is a bit of a concern.Bought 1x Sprintstar wheel last week as a spare and found this sticker on the side of the box. Makes me wonder whether these wheels are safe or even legal in Australia. Any thoughts?

I'd rekon we could add, 'and Australia' to that statement.

I'm no expert on the subject, but I'm thinking if they aren't off a factory vehicle they are probably meant to have some AS/xx standards approval.

yes - rather than AS it should have ADRxxxxxx on it

A lot of VW parts have "for off road use only"

Even quality parts from germany that are TUV approved are not legat here until you have been engineer approved

That all said - safe and legal are two entirely different conversations

I say delete all trace of this thread and run the wheel........

If you drive your car with a blown tail light your car is illegal and unroadworthy. The sticker is a lawyer clause same as medicines they list ALL possible side effects that way if you take them to court you cannot say you were not warned. My2c

I can't remember seeing that label on any parts etc I have bought
but its shown on US WEBSITES and US VW Magazines and US VW Parts Catalogs etc
and its on Most [virtually ALL] aftermarket stuff sold for air cooled VWs.. plus some standard parts that were used on North American Beetles EXCLUDING California..
California Had VERY STRICT Non pollution Laws.. well before everyone else.. So, modifying any vehicle made it illegal to be driven on California roads

it means that it ISN'T legal in the state of California and must not be used on public roads in the state of California..

So, its OK in the other Lower 47 states plus Alaska and Hawaii..
and Australia..
they are just covering themselves from any liability..

although to be really Legal in Australia , it should have an Australian approval etc number.. but do You think there is a listing somewhere for a tail light lens approved for Australian beetles??

I don't think so, plus most of those tail light lenses with an Aust approval number on it would be well and truly gone now... apart from the glass lenses.. lol ..
and I don't believe anyone checks anyway...

The tail stop lights need to be RED and the rear blinkers Amber..
to be legal in Australia.. that is all that is looked at... Plus a reflector

Nothing non original on Our beetles is really legal.. but they are not checked etc... a wheel that sits outside the mudguard is illegal regardless of where it was made...

cheers

LEE

It's on most of the empi stuff.... I think it was even on an oil filler neck I bought on the weekend. Just ignore it

As i have said before alot of aftermarket parts sold in Australia by resellers have not been approved for legal use on public roads, , this leaves the end user responsible for that including the engineering, ask before you by.

bugzla - August 27th, 2013 at 10:04 PM

just don't get the shits with the copper that pulls you over and fines you because they are not adr approved

Interesting stuff. I come from an Electronic wholesaling background where it has always been the importers responsibility to provide safe and legal product to consumer. Eg, we have to have easy access to all reports and test procedures ( regarding safety standards ) carried out on all products that the company makes available to the general public. If I was to buy this wheel over the internet, sure, buyer beware, but this wheel was purchased from a local importer that has the responsibility of providing a safe and legal product!

Either way I'm going with Fish26"s suggestion and running the wheel. please note this thread may self destruct at any moment.

Hmm ..
You see on the news at times that some government department has raided/seized dangerous toys be it for small parts/paint or some non compliance....
What would the difference be with car parts??

vwo60 - August 28th, 2013 at 08:51 PM

Unfortunatly reseller is under no obligation to comply the parts they sell to you, this is not like the electrical whole sale bussiness that is regulated to the max so nanna does not get electocuted, the responsability lies with you , he just forgot to mention to you that they do not comply when he sold it to you, have you asked the bussiness for the engineering paper work that he received when he submitted the wheel for destructive testing. buyer beware, if everbody asked that question when buying parts it would soon sort out the issue.

Yep, also on scat stuff like decorative chrome things for your engine, oil breathers and full flow parts, even the bolt for the generator pulley has it on the pack.

There is also a lot of LED lighting that states the same because its made overseas and doesn't comply here, even though if you look logically, it puts out a better light than a bulb, technically its not allowed.

Covering themselves, thats all, like putting "Caution, contents may be hot" on the side of a takeaway coffee cup or "Do not fold and stow in boot with infant in place" on a pram (yes I'm serious, sewn onto a label of a pram we owned).
