Does anyone remember the bubbly greenie Bernie Hobbs, formerly one of the panelists on the ABC TV show The New Inventors?
In 2010 she decided she was going to set an example, so she got rid of her petrol car and spent $48,000 on a Blade Electron, basically a Hyundai Getz
converted to electric propulsion.
The leftie Fairfax press at the time hailed her as a 'pioneer of Australian motoring.'
Now, three years later, how is that working out?

just shows how dumb and out of touch with reality that greenies are, what would the carbon foot print be on the all the extra gizmos in that car,
probably equal to a 4WD, what was done with the old motor from the car?

thats right, the best is old car fixed up and made efficient with either properly developed engine or a conversion of a more modern engine.
couple of point on the.
1. keeping an old car on the road as long as possible reduces the foot print almost exponentially compared to buying a new one every few year. 3 R's
reduce, reuse, recycle. Bold is the 2 in this example
2. the old car cost far less energy to make than any "green" or new car ever will for the matter of fact.
3. many old cars are actually more effect than a lot of new ones. The ford model T had an average economy of 25mpg and was designed to primary run on
ethanol and petrol as alternative. Today over 100 years later cars have reached a average of 26mpg. Sure some of the 4 cylinders are better than ever
but people seem to forget some of the economical cars in the past as well as some that are impossible to get economy from in the modern
counterpart.
biggest factor for that is weight, heavier cars are less efficient especially in city/town driving where 95% of people live. Cars are double the
weight today from the 60-70s
Electric cars are a great concept as the electric motor is almost 100% efficient. The problem is the source of electricity and very bad efficiency.
Coal power station have a peak efficiency of about 27% then put all the other looses in between to finally get to the electric motor in your car. Just
Horrible !
We now have ICE that are reaching efficiency of 50% and slowly getting better, that is amazing considering how old the ICE design is.
If we use waste produced by society to produce bio fuels using fermentation or use the waste to feed algae that produced oil via photosynthesis its 2
birds with one stone! The technology been around for ages but no one has implemented it. I am sure the oil companies have a lot to do with that
lol.
A lot of greenies don't seem to see the logic in that and go about it ass about. Fix the problem from the beginning not patch up the end result.

Well, it was surely pretty obvious that a $48,000 Hyundai Getz with a backyard electric conversion would depreciate like a bucket of prawns in the
sun. More to the point, I'm impressed that she got $8000 for it!
