Does anyone remember this forgotten VW dealer of southern Sydney in the late 1950s, Benaroon Motors?
They were located at 444 Punchbowl Rd in Belfield, just to the western side of the railway bridge over the goods railway line to Enfield. It was
actually on the corner of Punchbowl Rd and Benaroon Rd - hence the name.
From what I can gather, they began as a VW dealer in 1958 and ended some time in the early 1960s, probably replaced by the larger Ronstan Motors at
Lakemba (and later Muller and Muller).
I remember a VW service workshop on the other side of the railway line, on the other side of Punchbowl Rd just before you got to Belfield shops (and
where Australia's first Pizza Hut would be later built). It was a service station that specialized in VWs, but today is just a normal BP station. Not
connected with Benaroon Motors as far as I can tell.
The site of the former Benaroon Motors is today a grimy looking service station. I have never stopped there so I dunno if there is any evidence of its former life as a VW dealer. Old VW parts in the attic perhaps?
The "bros" that are there now most probably wouldn't know what a Volkswagen is.
I found out what happened after Benaroon Motors stopped being a Volkswagen dealer. In December 1961 they became a Hillman dealer instead.
