Hi Guys,

If anybody around the Ryde area of Sydney and knows what they’re doing with a SOLEX 34PICT 3 carb and could spare 10 minutes to pop past and help me out I would really appreciate it.

New recode motor just had its first service (tappets & oil) drove away from the mechanic and all was fine after about 5 KM's the cars started to die at every set of lights or whenever I took my foot of the gas.

I am sure it’s just an adjustment issue and I am sure it’s an easy fix, if you know what your doing with these carbs, but I don’t.

So if anybody is feeling generous I’d really like to hear from you.

Cheers,
Finn

One thing I always try first is to take out the idle jet (1 minutes work), then blow it out backwards, put it back in, and that has done it.

Hi Pete,

Yeah already done that ... It would also seem the points might have closed up too.

Spaner on the pully with ignition on and i am getting a a click in the dizzy between the TDC mark and the 1st mark on the pully, sould be at about the 7th mark, as I understand it.

problem is, I dont have any of the tools I need as they are still back in SA.

So i might have to struggel back to the mechaninc on monday and see if he can fix it up.

I was hoping to get it running today so i could use the car tomorrow, but not looking good now.

Hi

Make sure the wire is on the cut off solenoid and that its clicking when you pull the wire on & off.

Give the carb and manifold a good push & pull to make sure they're not loose.

With points they will consonantly close up over their life as the rubbing block wears down and retard the timing, get electronic conversion.

If the solenoid is opening and closing you can turn the idle up on the large screw on the side of the carby, never increase idle speed with the screw on the lever.

Yes, sounds like the wire on the electromagnetic idle cut off jet may have come loose.. from the coil?? or the jet itself..

so no fuel at idle... but if it still runs at idle sometimes then
its probably the points...
First service.. I would have checked the points...!!
they are wearing down from the time the key is turned...

You can try a points file thru the points about 10 times ... or some wet and dry paper [emery paper] may also help...
but a points file should do the trick...
they used to be a about $2 at auto shops... not sure whether they are still sold..??

cheers

Best to get a points replacement kit...
PLAZMEX $45 from wolfsburg automotive in Victoria...

Make sure the 2 O rings one on the mixture screw small and one and the large Air Idle adjust have NEW GERMAN O rings fitted

Hey Dave, as this is the weekend & I cant ring & ask, I'll assume that vintage can supply the german O-rings, but do you know if they are available separate or do you need to buy an entire carby rebuild/gasket kit?

vw54 - December 1st, 2013 at 04:53 PM

The O rings can be purchased separate from the kit

these are the culprits most of the time

Can I say that Finn under sells his car building abilities

I dont wanna turn this into a pissing competition - but some one who knocked something up as a first go as painting and car building is like Vincent Van saying he did a bit of graffiti

Anyway, Finn says he is coming to Liverpool next Friday, so you can see for your selves

S'cool when you meet new dubbers :tu:

Thanks Barry, but the credit for the car really should go to Paul Roberts in Adelaide. he is the mate i was telling you about and without him this car would not look anything like it dose now.

Also a huge nod has to go to all the guys who have helped get the car ready for rego in the mega build weekend a couple of months ago.

this car really is a group effort, and is a testemant to the good nature of VW people and their willingness to help out a fellow dubber ... just like you yourself Barry .... so thanks again for comming to my rescue, and i at least owe you a softdrink on friday night.

Look forward to to meeting a few other people too. bring on friday

Hi Guys,

Funny thing, the car started cutting out at the lights again today on the drive home.

I am guessing its the timming again, could it be an issue with the dizzy that it keeps slipping and making the motor do this?

Under load the car runs fine, and cruises at any speed really well, its pinging a little if i put the boot into it, but i dont really do that.
But slowing down for a red light or in heavy traffic, the car just cuts out, it fires back up every time and if i feather the pedal its fine, but i dont want to have to do that, and i just wanna fix the issue.

any thoughts are welcome as always.

cheers.

Ok ... i have been to 2 repco's and a super cheap and none of them had a timming light. ANybody know anywhere else i can try around the Ryde area ?

1303Steve - December 22nd, 2013 at 09:05 AM

Hi

Just use a 12 volt test light to set the timing. You can buy timing lights on eBay
