have a few questions to ask.
I have been offered a very nice stock Oval from a member of my extended family that had been hit with a falling tree. It was paid out by the insurance company but still has its original registration. there is reasonable roof damage - unfortunately right on the part above the windscreen so I am probably looking for a replacement roof section, damage to the rear passenger quarter and the rear passenger guard. Aside from that it all looks fine.

What I am trying to work out is has anyone put a car back on the road after an insurance company has written it off ?(especially in QLD) If it still has its rego does that mean it hasn't been written of by Main Roads? or do the Insurance companies have a database that they share with the state Govts based from their assessments?
Also, has anyone done a roof repair across the centre top of a windscreen without having an Oval section to use or is the small size windscreen a limitation?
Car is in Brisbane so I will probably have to try and get it to a panel beater within Bris/GC or Sunnie Coast region.

No problems if it's a repairable write off. If it was a Stat write off then no go.
Just all repairs need to be checked off before re registration.

I had a written off vehicle re-registered in SA, word was that NSW wouldn't do it so I had it done there as that is where it was writen off, bought it back to NSW and re-registered the car here no problems. However, the info I got was that there are circumstanses that will allow re-registration, one of which was that if the car was significant as to it's age or manufacture (last of a model such as one of the last GMH Monaros' etc). probably best to check with your states ruling authority as to their rules.

Some insurers like Shannon's will allow you to keep the car as salvage if it is a total loss. It depends whether they list the car as a write off or not. There is a register of written off cars that it would be on and you should be able to check via the vin number. It can still have rego because if the insurer gives it back it's up to the owner to cancel it.

The issue is that an oval would probably be insured for a tidy sum, if it was deemed a write off there would be a reason, either cost or safety, that meant it couldn't be repaired, otherwise they would have fixed it I would think for less than the cost of paying it out.

As already said, statutory write off can't be registered anywhere ever. Parts only. Usually rollovers, flood or fire damaged. Repairable can be fixed but needs an inspection for safety. It's around $500 and you need to have a safety certificate first to take to the inspection. It also means repairs would have to be 100% and legit. Interestingly a hail damaged car can be on the wovr and still needs inspecting but not repairing. Money grabbers.

Just found out its an 'economic' write off, Shannon's were the insurers and they advised my Uncle that he could get it on the road again if he wanted but he hasn't got the time now work has picked up again. He got it restored just before he retired but has since gone back to work.

can you post any pictures of the damage. I would think you are going to need an old skool bodyshop or rod shop type place who are used to shrinking metal.
Is it worse than dented. oval roof panel is going to be a world wide search I would suspect. but then shipping. 3 fold rag might work out well

Cant you just use cut that '65 roof you have and graft the oval window in?

Oval has a different profile at the front winscreen. Smaller more curved. Pictures would help sourcing correct part.

The last suggestion was a bit tongue in cheek - Amazeer knows my wife and the way that she would kill me and just about anyone else who touched her 1965 beetle particularly if I were to 'cut' any pert of it!!

I can recommend someone, however I know he has a number of cars lined up. So you would have to wait till later in the year. But he is old school cool, and pays particular attention to detail and can't be rushed.

thanks, got it. Am aware of the second one you mentioned and their previous work on an Oval, but not their painting. Shall check with your first and with my cousins who have the car and see what can be worked out.

Yeap, I reckon the section where the mirror attaches would be a pain to get right after that fold over.
