I am rebirthing my 63 beetle which has been under wraps for over ten years. She needs a good polish as the paint has dulled over the passage of time
under the covers. Product recommendations please!
Cheers Andrew
I will dig out a pic of the car and post later.
Crikey, Where to start?
I guess rule number one - If you plan to paint, make sure you use products with NO SILICONE WHATSOEVER!
If you are preserving patina, there are great products such as Ankorwax etc.
But if you are cleaning up an old campaigner, well, here's a real opportunity to clean out the
cupboard of all those fag ends of tins of polish you can't bring yourself to throw out.
Any polish is going to improve things
The key ingredient is elbow wax!
Having difficulty posting a pic using the iPad. A pic would put it into perspective. The paint is a little dull and I just want to get it looking as good as poss.
Here is a pic shortly after restoration in the late '90's.
On my old acrylic paint dubs I just use the Red tin Kitten (paint cleaner/mild cut) then finish with the green tin Kitten polish/wax.
Yes Kitten or the old Turtle will work wonders, anything with a mild cut will get rid of the oxidisation.
There are a few mild cut/ oxidisation removal/ colour enhancing polishes. They all seem to have orange/red colour. They are usually a liquid mild
cutter, or called a rejuvenator.
T- Cut
Turtle mild cutter
Kitten rejuvenator
Another option is to get a polish/ detail done at a place that specialises in doing details, or a mobile guy.
Thanks for your input fellas. Your comments have jogged my memory, when the body was painted the guys that did it used acrylic colour coat and then finished it off with 2 pack clear. I was very annoyed at the time, long story..... One of many lessons learned in the process of this project. Anyway, my 2 year old boy has reinvigorated my enthusiasm for the old girl. He is obsessed with Beetles ever since he laid eyes on the car last year!
Little blokes who watch Herbie movies all day are good like that!
