Learner driver soon to join family
amazeer - April 1st, 2014 at 09:46 PM

Insurance is due on the other car and my daughter will shortly turn 16. Yep L plates are coming. Has anyone recently done the shopping around for comprehensive insurance policy to cover under 25 learners?

Most policies cover L's under you being the responsible person in the front seat.

P's is the big dollars as the driver is on their own.

Just keep the car in your name and tell them that she may drive the car occasionally

It is the excess that you will pay for the under 25 driver that will really hurt in the case of an accident.
I have done it. With youi the excess will be $2000. Shannons wasn't great either.

Always insure under an older driver and you'll find Ls are generally covered (just with additional excess), until 25 its much cheaper to insure the car under an older driver with the P plater listed on the policy (and yeah the excess is high). I've found Shannons are best if its an older car but if its newer I always find AAMI the cheapest every time (RACV next). But I also know few people who have issues on repair jobs with AAMI but have never had to do a claim myself.

One of my friends is also with progressive direct online which is insanely cheap (ie. $400 to insure my old 2010 polo for comprehensive compared to $800-1000 everywhere else) but I don't know what they are like to claim with.

I have been in an accident with my learner driver daughter at the wheel. Insured with NRMA normal excess payment applied not the $2000 for under 25 driver.

Ok thanks all. I should be ok for another 12 months while on L plates and revisit at p plate time.
