Type 1 turbo rebuild

Hi folks,

It's been a while since I've been here -- had a radical life change of the type that could be seen as challenging at best, which has put my hobbie (read personal obsession that is my '66 Beetle) on hold until now.

After 12yrs and about a 100K on the same bottom end, using a late West German AS41 case - 0.5 on the mains, stock crank, pistons & rods, full flow oil filter with a Berg relief cover & regular oil changes - displacing 1.6 litres, which, in these past 3yrs has been running a GT17 Garrett blowing through 2 x 36mm Dellortos (a system I designed and built myself), needs refreshing - 60psi cranking press. is not good :p

My plan is to up the displacement to 1776 (90.5's) and run a 69mm counter weight crank. I don't want to spin it past 6200 rpm.

I need a crank good VW folk. A straight, welded crank - I'm dubious of the Chinese variety. Not too fussed if it's .020" under as long as it's crack free and straight.

Can anyone help?

Cheers.
Shaun :)

Thanks for reading folks.

I've placed an order for a crank & flywheel with DPR.

If you don't mind me asking Shaun, what boost and hp were you achieving? what red line did you have?

intercooled? 1600cc?

No worries Chris. I'm an open book mate :)

Yep, 1600cc. 8psi normally, using an external wastegate with the boost signal fitted inline with a charcoal canister solenoid off a 6cyl EF falcon which isolated the gate, giving 14psi at the press of a button.

No idea of HP as I'm not too keen on running my own stuff on a chassis dyno (I've had a bit to do with them in the past).

But suffice it to say, when I first fitted the system to the car, Richard Holzl took it for a drive, came back & said: "impressive". For a stock thing with a crappy old AP3 cam, it'd throw you back in the seat and break loose in third gear in the wet in a straight line. C.R. was 7.8 to 1 static.

I never spun it past 5500.

I've been running a water to air intercooler on it for the past twelve mths using a motor bike radiator in conjunction with a now heater core I had kickin' around. The coolant pump is a live bait item I bought from Frozen Boost in the states (Dieter Holzl put me on to them) - Quite cheap and damn good for the $. The thing lagged a bit though, but was much happier running along the road for extended periods at high speed.

Cheers.
Shaun
