its pretty quiet in here unlike the last couple of years.

ACE76 - June 19th, 2014 at 06:36 PM

No-one NEEDS to comment or ask questions any more, they all have know-how, now; how I don't know... Anyhow, most everyone now knows increasingly more about less and less. And almost no-one knows now increasingly less about more and more. And now-a-days, you know, almost no-one now writes silly replies to trivial prompts. Strange days... Tumbleweeds take over the highways. Beetles hide in the dark places.

bajachris88 - June 19th, 2014 at 06:39 PM

I'm lacking economic stimulus to drown avd in queries and blogs during development with projects / motors.

You'd think there would be a few more project blogs up with the race to finish for valla. :S

SebastienPeek - June 19th, 2014 at 06:42 PM

Yeah, I am also surprised there aren't more project threads going on for Valla.

When is Valla anyway?

One in a row.... Pffft

always something happening on melburgluft

vw54 - June 19th, 2014 at 07:03 PM

I am in MELBURG 4 3 days nearly snowing here no putor access at work ( buggar )

shokwave2 - June 19th, 2014 at 07:04 PM

I think people are also scared of posting project threads or asking questions in case they're attacked by keyboard warriors for not doing building it properly or asking "stupid" questions. "Use the seach button next time" is a popular response i see on different forums, which in turn scares people away from posting again.

nils - June 19th, 2014 at 07:08 PM

I'm with bajachris. less money, less time = less builds

I see the for sale section is pretty busy

fish26 - June 19th, 2014 at 07:25 PM

Too many people with actual know how have left the forum, I guess they are sick of all the BS.

Melburgluft IMO is a forum full of followers and ass kissers but at least they help each other out.

helbus - June 19th, 2014 at 07:28 PM

You can Youtube so much these days.

I used to be on the old dial-up BBS's (Bulletin Board Service). How things have changed since those Nemesis BBS days

Ampdub - June 19th, 2014 at 07:39 PM

Tend to agree with Shokwave2 a bit as some people tend to blast first, I know when I was a fairly new on a few forums I had been blasted a few times.

Deadpan - June 19th, 2014 at 08:09 PM

While I am only new to AVD one thing I have noticed that in help sections the OP gets problem solving suggestions but alot of the time if the problem is solved and abit of thanks for helpful members can be rare to be posted

interestingly, for me anyway the selling days are over.

I used to be able to make money hand over fist with any used car parts from any model I had laying around. even rebuilding starters, alternators and restoring some vw and Porsche gauges made some good extra cash just few years ago. This is when I was unemployed and dealing with ongoing health problems.

been employed full time for 4 years now, Kept all the good shit I didn't want to sell.

when I want to sell some of the stashed goodies, no one want to buy anything now, the offers are just ridiculous. The irony!

People clearly don't have the cash or confidence to spend atm.

Also I see people are getting desperate to make money, stuff that is worthless junk its like drug money these days.

They are a good laugh though, best i seen is a gear stick for a common domestic model for $284

x2 It is very rare for a thanks to be given or even the solution when someone finds the problem but doesn't post what fixed it..

helbus - June 19th, 2014 at 10:53 PM

I give my knowledge without expectations of thanks. I do it because I really do want to help.

PHAT BUG - June 20th, 2014 at 09:01 AM

It's interesting you say this, about it being quiet.

Back in Feb I crunched some numbers over a 24hr period, on 4 aussie VW forums, results as follows:

Aussieveedubbers
73 posts
15788 members

Kombi Club
68 posts
10070 members

Melburg Luft
88 posts
590 members

DSK
38 posts
900 members

Interesting that the forum with the least members is also the most active.

I think the reason AVD has got quiet in recent years is directly due to to the fact that different VW "groups" have found it much easier to start there own forum and get the information that they are really interested in.

Back in the early days of the Australian VW internet movement, thanks to Jim Gow, AVD was the sole source of your VW fix. I suppose, 15 odd years later, it has become a bit generic, with people now looking for specific VW scenes to be a part of.

My 2c.

Stanley - June 20th, 2014 at 09:47 AM

I think Phat Bug has nailed it.
There are also things like Ultimate Aircooled Forum which has recently gone through some turmoil and appears to have gone the way of Super League many years ago.
Then you have Cal-Look.com which has since closed it's doors but continues in some form on FB
And of course FB...I think a lot of people now use FB. You can create open groups and closed groups of like minded people and only invite those you want. Preventing in most parts those who just want to push there own agenda or stir trouble.
Me personally...I've taken a lot from this site so will always try and give something back where I can, however I don't post these days unless I have something constructive to add.

h - June 20th, 2014 at 10:21 AM

Yep ditto above,
as a quick snapshot Rhett (Phat Bug) is all over it

the 'generic' site has moved on as many forums have developed their own specific niche
looking at the data however can be interpreted to which ever way you wish
sure the more posts on a given day may give the indication of a strong presence etc
but the quality of material being offered may seem to give more credence than constant tea bagging and fart jokes
it looks as if people now contribute if something constructive can be value added to the topic in question
seeing other forums wither and die maybe similar to the many vw clubs for example that were around twenty odd years ago, people move on and do other things
plus there is just so much choice on offer now that the only thing that hasn't changed is the time given to enjoy what's on offer
here unlike other forums around, caters for all variants of dub, sure the specific info maybe elsewhere but everyone is welcome and information can be freely decimated, a great thing either through club chat or events if you want to promote an activity or alike to get people actually together in the real world
and IMO having to conform to someone's specific agenda to be 'accepted' into some special golden ring or other is best left to the other places that pursue such.. thankfully it doesn't seem to be here
Interesting times ahead..

or everyone is out in the shed working on their cars and are too busy to post.. nobody thought of that one yet..
maybe it's just going to be the way of the future

+1.

I also agree with the tea bagging and fart jokes.
Not that there's anything wrong with fart jokes.......

Joel - June 20th, 2014 at 12:53 PM

Facebook is a big killer of forums too as its just so much easier and convenient to post on there and get instant responses.
You can bet half the members of the Aussieveedubbers facebook group dont even come here, we're having the same problem on SuperBeetlesOnly.
But yes I've certainly noticed this place getting quiter and quieter over the last few years.

This x2.
I do most of my technical stuff on Youtube now as not only is it easier not having to take a bunch of pics then write stuff up, most people seem to prefer seeing it done rather than looking at pics and just reading a description.
it can also be an alright little money spinner if you give the viewers what they are looking for.

Maybe if you didn't close, delete, edit threads or threaten to kick long standing members off it wouldn't be so quiet.:tu:

snowman9 - June 20th, 2014 at 02:55 PM

I hadn't really noticed "the quiet" you blokes are referring to, although I haven't been on this forum for a couple of years.

In the last week I've read and looked with great interest at some of the projects that have been undertaken.

I've also read the usual bitchin' & trolling too.

When I changed my details, I was thrown out of the system, sent Andrew a txt and he called me straight away and sorted it.

It was tops!

People have also read & replied to my recent posts. Nice.
I also feel that there is no such thing as a stupid question.
