Good story, and the styling inspiration theories are interesting. But it perpetuates the myth that Karmann Ghias were hand-built. 'A coach-built phenomenon.' No they weren't. The bodies were stamped in presses and welded together, just like Beetles were. Only some body finishing - lead-wiping the seams and rubbing the paintwork - was done by hand.

Also wrong about the floorpan. It wasn't built on a Beetle floopan; the shapes are very different.

But yes he got the dates right. The Ghia was only sold in Australia from 1959 to 1968. And while they may have made over 387,000 mostly for the US market, in Australia they only sold 805 in total over those years.

Beetle and KG chassis are the same the floor pan halfs are different
