Rope on the bumpers?
blompod - November 28th, 2014 at 08:13 PM

Whats the significance of rope wrapped tightly around the bumper bar of Vdubs? Ive only seen it on rat rods. I like it....

Towrope?

No its a fashion thing, I looked it up and came across it on the Samba forum, the thread was a few years old, but one yank said it was an outback Australian thing and then proceeded to put shit on the look, elaborating to stupid stickers and paint rust, obviously knocking rat rods, and "putting stupid shit on the roof rack just for looks" What a dick, the avatar of his car was a pristine lowered show beetle. Ummm I wonder if he did that for the look? If its not your taste doesnt mean its wrong. As a true enthusiast I like all types and styles of Vdubs.

Rope on bumpers...pft
Geez next they'll be putting whale tails and torana tail lights on them........
Nu just kidding...
One thing i like about the vw community is the different tastes that can be seen across a single model.

About 53 years ago I put some 'Lightning Flashes' on the bonnet of my Beetle, because I thought it looked a bit plain. Not everyone liked it....but I didn't give a *#!%. :smirk:

or like shade cloth over the grilles of some people's cars just to be fancy lol. gayest look ever imo

My personal preference is to have a car plain, no accessories, roof racks or anything thing like that, to me it spoils the essence of what a car is, a machine not a fashion parade.

kinda like girls wearing makeup and accessories. not a good look

Went to the car clubs Christmas Kids Bash last Sunday.

There was a 68 Beetle there which must have had every conceivable extra ever marketed for a Beetle fitted.

Immaculate little car IMO ruined.

Looked like a little old lady with far too much make up and trinkets adorning her. Mutton dressed up as lamb.

But, to each there own.

I'm always real careful not to do that.

IMO Nothing wrong with going all out on accessories, just like there is nothing with a pristine resto, a resto cal or a rat look... each to their own. Dare i say that there is nothing wrong with whale tails in very specific circumstances (ie. German Look).

Also good thing with bolt on accessories, you can always take them off.

I cannot talk for bumpers but I had a rope wrapped around my roof rack at the front.
It was for two reasons. One so i had a rope handy should the need ever arise (even if it would take a while to get off) and 2 it stopped the roof rack humming at speeds over 80km/hr.

nils - December 2nd, 2014 at 10:11 AM

Now you see the rope in the above picture has a purpose, it's holding the fuel tank down. No doubt because the tie rods are trying to push it out of the bonnet  I imagine that when the bonnet is closed the rope is also used to hold that closed.
