I'm in a predicament and I wanted to get some views with people who've shared the same experience. I love my 71 superbug to death, I moved to
Australia 6 years ago from England. She's been there through all the ups and downs. I used to use her as a daily driver but now I cycle to work as
it's 5 mins away and parking is non existant. I also don't drive her at weekends at the moment as I'm renovating my house. She's sat on the road
rusting away and it's killing me.
I've just had her in for a service, I've just had a quote for $2.5 to fix up all the rust/body, and an extra $500 for some carpet.
I'm in two minds here, do I spend the money on fixing her up and trying to enjoy her, or do I sell her on for someone else to enjoy.
Just wanted to see what others have done and their past experiences, I'm thinking of spending the money on her, enjoying her over summer and getting
married in her (driving to the venue). Then selling on, current prices around 4-5k in good condition, or just getting rid of for 2.5k'ish now. I just
can't make up my mind, I don't want to be annoyed down the track that I sold her.
Maybe I'm just too attatched haha.
Sorry for the long post
Are you desperate for the money?
Could you just bomb it with fish oil / lanolin oil / ankor wax, sit it up on bricks, fill the engine completely with oil, undo all the valves so they
are all closed and store the car somewhere until a later date when you are ready?
Certainly sounds like you don't want to get rid of it. The fact that you have reached out for opinions.
Regrets are a bummer Danny.
If you can get a spot to store her safely and dry, put her away till you can make a decision.
I pulled my HQ coupe apart 19 years ago, people keep saying I should get some cash but I know that eventually she'll be back on the road.
Jeez I WISH I'd kept my '76 Bay Panel auto.
It gave me the shits coz 3 winters in a row the damn thing wouldn't start until lunchtime (I can sympathise! ), and I didn't have the time to spare working 13 day fortnights to make it winter-ready. It forced me to ride
my Kwak to work in the middle of winter every year, and finally I just gave in and sold it.
I'm a dumb-arse!
My only consolation is the girl that bought it went around Oz 3 times and still has it now 15 years later. I used to get postcards from my old Kombi
as it travelled for years later.
Yeah maybe I should just bite the bullet and keep her for another summer, get her fixed up and enjoy!!! Then hopefully I'll sell my house and get one with a garage
Do what a friend of mine did.
He moved a few times and needed to store his XM Falcon Delivery/Panel van. He would go up and down the street a few times on evenings and weekends,
and when he saw a senior citizen tending to their garden, he would ask them if they had spare garage space, or had any friends that did. He would
offer them $50 a month, and they often would say "oh no, I would just like to help", but my mate knew it was not the owner of the garage that would
be a problem if he did not pay, it would be their children. Anyway it worked out well for him for over twelve years in numerous locations, and his XM.
