Torsion Bar Dimensions
ReMiLi - November 15th, 2015 at 04:32 PM

Hey guys,

I hope this is posted in an acceptable location.
I am hoping someone will be able to take a measurement of their torsion bars for me.
I dont actually own a VW, I own a 1986 Honda civic with torsion bar front suspension. It is a track only car and I am endeavouring to find some thicker bars which has proven near impossible.
Through searching and looking for alternatives, I found that some of the VW's have a 24 11/16" long bars which are close to the 24" I require and are available in the thickness I want!
If the ends of the VW bars are larger than on my civic bars, I could have them machined down and re-splined.

I have attached a picture showing which dimensions I require. Note that the diameter of both splined ends are different.

If someone on here is able to get these dimensions for me I will be eternally greatful! Thanks in advance.

My torsion bars are longer than that, from a '73 IRS L Bug, but I thunk (not sure) that the splines at each end are the same for the shorter earlier bars.

Spline diameter 36mm and spline length 20mm at one end.
Spline diameter 33mm and spline length 26mm at the other end.

I've got '89 CRX rear springs to go on the front of mine, so what comes around goes around hey?

Type 1 and 3 torsion bars come in these lengths and diameter:

626 and 727mm for type 3 and pre '58 23 and 24mm diameters,

552mm in 21 and 22 diameter for bug after '58,

and 676mm long for IRS in 22 and 23.5 diameters.

Swayaway make up to 30 diameter for all types.

Bus have a larger spline,
but come in 553 and 590 lengths with diameters ranging from 26.2 to 30mm.
