Bizarre - February 14th, 2016 at 10:58 AM

my son has lost the key to his Mk 3 Golf.
The one that has the chip in it

He has a "dumb" spare that opens doors but cant start the car

What are his options?

Barry,
You can get a new key from VW dealer. They can access the 'secret pin code' needed to reprogram the new key. OR
Get from a donor car the Key/s, ignition switch, door and boot locks, computer and immo box.

Can't you manually put a code in?

I have been told by a VW dealer that if you use a non genuine key on a modern VW then plug the car into a VW diagnostics computer the diagnostics will detect the non genuine key and shut the motor down. The only way to get it going again is with a new genuine key and computer to suit. No idea whether that applies to a Mk3 but something to consider

Barry, did you get this sorted?

Yes. He needed urgent action and ended up with a 24hr guy.
Think it was $250 which considering I thought was ok
