Mohair headliner question
penguin - February 23rd, 2016 at 01:23 PM

Hey all,
Have a question. We have a 56 oval in need of a new headliner and associated interior pieces. The car was hit by a tree and we now have the repairs done, but the old mohair headliner is trashed. Bought a TMI one over here in the US to ship home, but its not what we are after. The mohair is not mohair, its synthetic and very light.
Has anyone gotten a new set of mohair interior that actually feels and might even be mohair? Anyone know where to get a real mohair headliner? Prefer to get one in Australia but willing to get one from anywhere.

Try Chucks convertibles in Los Angeles

I bought the same TMI headliner for my Sunroof Oval thinking it would be mohair, not even close to the original, it was expensive too, not happy.

Am speaking to J Bugs and a couple of others to see what they have. At least one has advised that they don't have mohair, but a wool blend that is close (honest) and one in the UK who says they use real mohair.

Aside from Dave B and myself, anyone else fed up with crap advertising, especially this product? If so, feel free to complain to TMI so that they can't say they have never received a complaint. I can give you the email address, so long as you have bought one of their headliners and are dis-satisfied with it.

Hello,

I apologize that you are unsatisfied with the quality of our material. We do not offer original Mohair because we are not able to obtain the actual material. It is an extremely rare material to find so we have replicated the headliner to the best of our ability. We have never received complaints from customer being unhappy with the material so I apologize that you feel so strongly about it in a negative way. Have you tried contacting CIP to see if they can issue you a refund?

The guy in the UK doesn't do kits - he will only fit the car himself, so that's out for Australia. Lenny at West Coast Classic Restoration sent over some fabric samples. Now, he was honest and said they weren't mohair, but they do have a high wool blend in them. he said about 80% and it feels like it. Still hunting - found RHD floor mats though for 56-59 ;) beetles

Be interested to know who does these? I was under the impression the only molded rubber floor mats available were in LHD only.

West coast classic restoration - Lenny - they have the mats for 56-59 right hand drive Beetles. He said he has no idea where to get 60 mats, the ones with the tunnel mat joined to the root well mats.
Lenny said he had about 30 sets.

Another place to try could be - http://www.smsautofabrics.com

I have one of the oval RHD mat sets in my '60 (these were ones Wolfsburg West had) - a slight bit of creative trimming was required as there's a slight gap under the front seats and the other major difference is the holes for the studs to hold it into place. As there's not much other choice for rhd I was happy with the results :D

Yeah,
spoke to him and got a fabric sample - he admits he cant get Mohair but can get a reasonable wool cloth. Far better than the TMI think I bought.
