Beetle Steel Sunroofs
Birdman - March 18th, 2016 at 09:50 PM

Having just scored two Beetle sliding steel sunroofs, i'm keen to get any information about them as well as bits for them.

Does anyone know if there are numbers for how many we have here in Oz? I beleive they were an option from 65 on here but i've seen very few and just want to know how rare they are.

Anyone on here have one or bits for them? Both require refurbishment and yes, one will be for sale.

I have 2 - one in my Oval and one in my storage area waiting to be fitted to something and it probably wouldn't hurt to have another one- just in case.

They are pretty common when chopped off a car.still on the original car is much more uncommon. One for sale at Parkridge qld. A mate get a lot of nos bits from a vw dealer in germany just heaps of emails to track down the bits. The drain tube etc will be the hard it to get right so all your hard work doesn't rust out.

Everything you need to make it work is still available new in the U.S. There are a few Companies that deal with it. I made some improvements to the drain system when I fitted mine. I also welded the rear section to the roof with spot welds instead of glue like the OG method.

Hey Birdman,

I have a 66 factory Sliding roof, I have been told from various people that approximately 300 to 320 were made in total. No records are avaiilable to confirm this.

I know of 3 others in Melbourne, a couple in Sydney also.

I ordered my parts from mtmfg.com in the states, I have the left and right cables that I dont need and the plastic handle. I can have a look tonight and see what else I have if you are interested.

As far as I was aware, in Australia there were a little less less than 200 built in each year of 1966 and 1967. That's less than 400 in total. Dave
