Hi everyone, I'm thinking of building a car trailer to tow
my LWB Beach Buggy & I'd like advice from people who have
built their own or if you've bought one.

Deck size to be 3100mm x 1850mm including guards, the Buggy will drive
up & over the guards. Electric brakes & full aluminum checker plate floor.
I've been told to build it without springs so it can be lower & the buggy
has its own suspension....????

If anybody who has pics of their trailers I'd appreciate you posting them up!!

I’ve used many single axle trailers with no suspension to transport racing buggies back in the good old days.
They tend to break up on rough roads and needed frequent welding up. Mud guards fall off etc.
They do handle very well and are nice and light. Pretty good on the bitumen. Definitely need good light truck tyres.
The trick with building a trailer is the axle placement. Build the frame first, balance it on a piece of pipe on the shed floor. Then put everything on it that it’s going to carry. The car, spare tyre, tool boxes etc. Then roll the whole thing forward and back to find where the axle needs to be. The draw bar needs to be almost too heavy to lift. Then it’ll handle properly.

Thanks heaps tony, yeah I've decided to ditch the no suspension idea but sto lick
with the single axel. As I want to tow the buggy facing forwards I'm not too sure how far
toward the rear of the trailer should be. Love ur idea re balancing it!!

I did a similar thing when I modified my box trailer to take my (completely unsuitable and way too bloody heavy!) drag bike.

I put the front wheel holder up front put the bike in place on it, then with a bit of wood centred on a set of bathroom scales under the hitch moved the bike-in-the-stand forwards and backwards until I ended up with about the right weight on the hitch (for me, 40kg out of a loaded 500kg trailer).

Tows really nicely.

Also I have this sketch in my VW file, but I don't know its provenance, but I think it relates to general purpose trailers, not car-carriers.
